KIRAT: A bridge between Nepal - Mongolia revealing the origin of Shivaism
This video gives an insight into roots of Shivaism(worshiping of mother earth, nature). Now Kirat are very ancient tribe in history. They are the foremost settlers in the Himalayas region which was called "Kiratdesh" or "land of Kiratas" in Veda and other ancient Hindu texts. Actually nobody knows when they came into Nepal because these people are mentioned in ancient religion book of Hindu like Veda, Puranas, and Ramayana and Mahabharata Epics. These people are also mentioned in ancient Greek history, Chinese history and Holy book of Sikh Guru Nanak. Kiratas are first mentioned in the Yajurveda (Shukla XXX.16; Krisha III.4,12,1), and in the Atharvaveda (X.4,14). These people are described in the ancient texts as indigenous people of Mongolian race, "gold-like", ie, yellow in skin color with stout and short stature, high cheekbones, flat noses, narrow black eyes and thin mustaches and beards. They were brave and doughty warriors and very deft archers as described in the following verse; "Kairatam vesam asthaya kancana-druma-sannibham" Taking up a Kirata resemblance, like unto a tree of gold (IV,35,2); The Vedas, Ramayana and Mahabharata viewed them as fearful and terrible highlanders. The Ramayana describes: "Kiratasca tiksna-cudasca hemabhah priya-darsanah, antar-jala-cara ghora nara-vyaghra iti srutah" upon translation is The Kiratas, with hair done in pointed top-knots, pleasant to look upon, shining like gold, able to move under water, terrible, veritable tiger-men ...

5000+ years old cultural dance by Kirat-Limbu
As of April 15, 2011, Nepal will turn 2068 years old in regards to Bikram Sambat calendar. Right now the New Nepali Constitution is planning a draft to use Kirat's calendar (Yele Sambat) to commemorate King Yalamber for opening up Kathmandu valley and starting the human civilization in the valley. During the conference last year in 2010, senior historians Prof. Jagadish Chandra Regmi and Prof. Dineshraj Pant presented a paper regarding the use of Kirat Yele Sambat. With Nepali government formally recognizing Yele Sambat, Nepal turned 5070 as of Friday 15th Jan 2010. Every year Kiranti(rai, limbu, sunuwar, yakkha) have been following their long traditional New Year which starts on the day of Nepali maghe sakranti which falls on 15th Jan. With the recognition of Yele Sambat this makes Nepal as one of the oldest civilization in the world in par with other civilization such as Ancient Mesopotamia, Indus Valley, Chinese, Greek, Egypt that are all more than 5000+ years old. This is the cultural dance by Kirat-Limbu that have been passed down generations by generation over the course of the millennium.

Kirat-Chhantyal celebrate "Deusi-Bhailo" to commemorate Kirat King Balihang
Cultural dance by Kirat-Chhantyal community from Nepal. Chhantyal is one of many Kiratas who are the foremost settlers in Nepal and the Himalayas region. In around 330AD, the Aryan Licchavis encroached into foothills of Himalayas and invaded Kirat Kingdom in the Kathmandu valley. As a result Kirat society were broken into many groups. Those that settled in east of Kathmandu are known as rai, limbu, dhimal, sunuwar, yakkha today. Those settled in northeast and northwest of Kathmandu are known as chepang, jirel, thami. And for those who went to southeast and southwest of Kathmandu are known as tharu today. As for those Kiratis who remained in the valley became a contemporary valley people known as "newar". As for those who migrated to west of Nepal, not much was studied about them and as time went by almost disappeared into oblivion. Hence after almost millennium of separation, today scholars and historian have managed to fix the broken Kirat families. After the Aryan Licchavis conquered Kathmandu valley, Kiratas split into many groups and headed in different directions of hilly parts of Nepal. For example most places in western Nepal was named after Kirat King but many years later the name of the places changed slowly due to people misinterpreting it or mispronunciation. For examples, Bajahang became Bajhang, Tanahang became Tanahun. Bajahang and Tanahang has been identified as some Kirat King who led some Kirat people into west of Kathmandu. With that i am focusing on ...

Kirat-Tamang dances to Selo Song
Nepal is a cultural mosaic state comprising different caste and ethnic groups belonging to mainly the Tibeto-Burman and Indo-Aryan linguistic families, which is indicative of the waves of migrations that have occurred for over 2000 years from the north and south, respectively (Pradhan & Shrestha, 2005: 1): the Tibeto-Burman or Mongoloid group that migrated especially from the north and east and by Aryan group that migrated from the south and west. It has been said that Nepal is a nation forged in migration (Gellner, 2007). The migration of various groups took place again and again over long periods. Tamang is one of many Kiratas who have been living in Nepal now. While no scholars or historian have the exact answer to tell when the first Kirat group arrived in the Himalayas region and from where, other Kirati group having arrived in the later time has no such trouble finding their ancestral homeland. Tamang, one of many Kiratas living in Nepal arrived in the Himalayas region and into Nepal in the beginning of the 12th century. It is no doubt that Tamang along with Gurung, Lepcha, Sherpas, Thakali and Yolmo all migrated down from the Tibetan plateau.

Kirat-Gurung song 'Buki Fula' from Gurung film 'Herbye Cha' (Son of Himalayas)
Gurung is one of many Kiratas who have been living in the Himalayas for unknown time. Gurung along with Magar, Limbu and Rai are known as the Gurkhas or the "bravest of the brave" outside Nepal. Nepal's recorded history only begins with the Kiratis. Many scholars and historian have concluded that the Kiratis arrived in the Kathmandu valley (now the capital of Nepal) in 800 - 700 BCE entering from east of Nepal. The Kiratis then established the human civilization in the Kathmandu valley. But in around 330 AD, the Indo-Aryan Licchavis from northern India invaded the Kathmandu valley. This brought to the end of the powerful Kirat dynasty that had lasted for about 1225 years. The defeated Kiratis then resettled in many parts of hilly regions of Nepal, breaking into many small groups never being able to recover again. Then in the late 1700 AD, Hindu King Prithvi Narayan Shah founded the modern Nepal. He ordered that the national language of Nepal will be "khas kura"(khas language). The national language of Nepal is called 'Nepali' today. Nepali is written in the Devanagari script and so is Hindi. Both Nepali and Hindi language falls under Indo-Aryan language branch of the Indo-European language family. The language in this video is Gurung language. Gurung language falls under Tibeto-Burmese category. Other ethnic groups whose languages falls under the same Tibeto-Burmese category includes the Chhantyal, Newar, Rai, Limbu, Magar, Tamang, Sherpa, Thakali who are all Mongoloid ...

Kirat-MaGuRaLi the Gurkhas: Warrior Gentlemen from the Hills and Mountains of Nepal
Gurkhas are predominately formed by Gurung, Limbu, Magar and Rai ethnic community from Nepal. These four groups have supplied their young man for the British Army since as early as 1815 AD. The term Gurkha came from the word Gorkha, a town west of Nepal where Hindu King Prithiv Narayan Shah started his expansion to unify the country into modern Nepal in the late 17th century. In around 18th century, a war broke out between Nepal and British Empire who was ruling India that time because of border tension. The Gorkha army led by PN Shah fought bravely against the British foes. Although the British won the war, they really couldn't colonized Nepal. Because of bravery and tenacity shown by the Gorkha army, the British started recruiting Gorkha soldiers into the British army. The British officers used their own term "Gurkha" instead of Gorkha to call the martial man of Magar, Gurung, Rai and Limbu recruited for the British army. But in Nepal and India, Gorkha are still being used. So with the turn of 2011 AD, Kiratis have been called by different names. Some scholars called them Mongol. Others call them the Himalayas race. Still others write them as 'indomitable peasants". The British officers call the Kiratis "Martial Race". Gorkha and Gurkha are other two names added in 18th century AD. Not forgetting "the Bravest of the Braves" was given by Sir Professor Sir Ralph Turner. By 1990's the term "MaGuRaLi" came to exist to abbreviate Magar-Gurung-Rai-Limbu. No matter what names ...
