Ek Veer Stree Ki Kahaani... Jhansi Ki Rani is a historical television series on Zee TV created by Contiloe Telefilms. The series premiered on August 18, 2009. Ulka Gupta played the lead. It took a leap on June 8, 2010 and Kratika Sengar portrayed the lead from there on. The show's last episode went air on 19 June 2011.
Jhansi Ki Rani was an experimental show for the channel as most channels were roping big Bollywood stars for target rating points (TRPs).
It is a historical show about Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi. Jhansi Ki Rani starts with Manikarnika a.k.a Manu (Ulka Gupta),at the age of 14. She lives with her father Moropant Tambe(Shailesh Dattar) who is a Pandit in the court of Peshwa Baji Rao II (Ravindra Mankani) and Nana Saheb(Satyajeet Dube) in Bithoor. She is trained by Tatya Tope (Amit Pachori). She is a threat to the British officials and hates to see them rule India. She takes the form of Kratni Guru to tackle them. She becomes a rival to the British official named Manson(Edward Sonnenblick), who creates various troubles for her. She gradually overcomes the troubles. When a marriage proposal from Jhansi Naresh Maharaj Gangadhar Rao Newalkar (Sameer Dharmadhikari) comes her way her life changes from a common lady to a Maharani(Queen). The British with Moti Bai foils various attempts to kill her but Manu makes friends with Samar Singh (Siddharth Vasudev) who was actually appointed to kill her. She continuously brings good luck to Jhansi after her marriage and so as per Maharashtrian tradition her name was changed to Lakshmi Bai. She enters the Jhansi's court only to find it filled with enemies in the name of relation, namely Lachhu Bai (Amita Nangia),Sakku Bai (Jaya Bhattacharya), Janaki Bai, Ali Bahadur (Tarun Khana). The court's Prime Minister Narasingh Rao (Dinesh Kaushik) and army head Raghunath Singh (Hemant Choudhary) are loyal to the king. One the day of the consummation of the royal couple, Lakshmi Bai gets news that Samar Singh is going to be killed. She leaves the palace to save Samar and succeeded in it only to be expelled from the country of Jhansi by Gangadhar Rao.
Rani leaves the palace and reaches Acharya and group who are peace loving persons. After a leap (June 8, 2010), the story focuses on the elder Lakshmibai (Kratika Sengar). Rani meets Karma (Puneet Vashist) who is initially an antagonist and turns an ally later on. Dalhousie becomes the Governor General (Gary Richardson). The royal couple even though separated miss each other. Rani yet again saves Raja's life a number of times. A new official is appointed to Jhansi named Nelson (Edward Sonnenblick), twin brother of Manson of Bithoor. Nelson one of the main antagonist under the orders of Dalhousie creates trouble in Jhansi by arresting Karma and Samar. Rani gave a leagal fight and tries to save both of them but fails to save Samar Singh, who is hanged by Britishers. Gangadhar Rao gets into a rage and flies at the Britishers. Dalhousie appointed another officer who is good at heart named Ellis (Alexx ONell) to play a double game. An Baba tells Rani that after five deaths in her family she will face heavy crisis. Surpassing various troubles and treachery Rani gives birth to a baby boy and names him Damodar Rao. Lachu Bai tries to kill the baby by adding poisoned milk to pure milk. Rani gets this news in the last minute and saves the kid. Raja makes Janaki (she was also involved) drink the poisoned milk and she dies. Lachu Bai tries to kill Damodar and by mistake takes raja's cousin's son Anand Rao by burying the baby alive. Rani Lakshmibai saves both the babies and buries sakku bai in pit dug by sakku. Nelson makes an evil plan and manages to kill the baby using a snake to bite it. He even destroyed the only medicine bottle. Rani managed to find another bottle but it was too late. After the death of Damodar Rao, Gangadhar Rao's health detoriates. The royal couple adopt Anand Rao and rename him as Damodar Rao. Lakshmi Bai chases Nelson out of Jhansi and makes him sign a letter which comprises all his misdeeds. Dalhousie manages to stab the king leading it to his death. Baba warns Rani again that the five deaths are over and asks her to be ready to face challenges .Taking this chance of confusion Ali Bahadur claims the throne with the support of Dalhousie. Rani kills him and dumps him in a pit. Dalhousie appoints Hamiltton as a new officer.
Nelson takes heed in Orchha. The Queen of Orchha, Ladai Sarkar (Achint Kaur) and her ancestors are a long time rival of Jhansi rulers. Hamilton tricks Gaus Khan (Manoj Kumar) a cannon operator and gets him arrested in Orchha. Rani who wants to wage a war on British wanted his help. When she came to know of his arrest, she wanted to make ties with Ladai Sarkar. Both the queens participate in a flag pointing competition in which Lakshmi Bai has won in nine consecutive years. Ladai Sarkar betrays Rani by making false promises of becoming a friend. Ladai Sarkar takes the help of Rao Dulaju to attack Rani. Nelson and Hamilton jointly fools Tatya, Raghunath and Jhansi soldiers and bring them to Orchha only to get caught by Orcha soldiers. Rani challenges Ladai Sarkar to war which she accepts. The conditions are that the help of Britishers should not be taken and on every day if Lakshmi Bai wins a person is to be released and if Ladai Sarkar wins a person will be killed. The first day Rani wins and Raghunath is released but from the next day onwards Ladai Sarkar started using Britishers help and betrays the war rules. AcharyaJi comes to Rani's help. Rani takes the form Kranti Guru and saves all the soldiers including Tatya. Nelson manages to capture Jhansi fort. In the final day battle Hamilton had arranged a huge battalion to help Ladai Sarkar but on hearing the news of Jhansi being captured he betrayed Ladai Sarkar. Rani won the battle but she forgave Ladai Sarkar.
Rani Lakshmi Bai is left shocked after knowing the state of Jhansi. She marches towards Jhansi fort. Nelson shocked on seeing the army keeps Damodar Rao on gunpoint and ask Rani to leave. Rani manages to save Damodar Rao and her family and captures Hamilton but fails to save Ellis. Nelson threatens to kill Ellis and Rani accepts to release Hamilton for Ellis with the permission of Jhansi people. Rani remembers a secret passage to enter the palace which at the same time is found by Nelson. Nelson with the help of Rao Dulaju manages to trap Rani by blocking both the ends of the passages but by fate Dulaju also gets stuck inside. Rani finds a weak spot in the wall and gets out. On her way back she meets Rose Nelson (Ramona Sav) wife of Nelson and takes her along with her and threatens Nelson with her life. Nelson surrenders but Hamilton refuses. But Nelson convinces Hamilton by revealing his evil mission and succeeds in it by bringing more inforcements and fooling Rani. However Rose becomes friends with Rani and help her to regain the fort. Nelson announces prize for any person whomever tips him about Kranti Guru. In this situation Rani takes the form of Rana Bankura who steals from the rich to give it to the poor. Captain Bhim Singh arrives in Jhansi to take the treasury to Gwalior. Bhim Singh is actually Karm in disguise. Due to various circumstances Karma arrests Rani (as Ranbakura - so Karma didn't know that it was Rani) and jail her. He leaves with the treasury. With the help of Rose, Rani escapes and stops Karma. Karma fights Ranbakura without knowing her true identity. When Rani's veil falls of Karma surrenders that he was working for Mangal Pandey (Arav Chowdharry) another freedom fighter. Rani and Karma meet him, Nelson follows them and fight with them only to lose an eye. Nelson manages to reach Jhansi and plans about defeating her. Nelson tactfully removes Tatya and Mangal Pandey from the reach of Rani. Karma and Rani in disguise reach Dalhousie's office and kidnap him. They use him as a bid in return for Jhansi. Ellis speaks in support of Rani and manages to make them accept to return Jhansi. Meanwhile Rao Dulaju under Nelson's instructions reveal the truth that Dalhousie killed Gangadhar Rao. Rani eventhough angry for the sake of her people decide to handover Dalhousie alive. Nelson leaves Jhansi. Rani Lakshmi Bai's return electrifies Jhansi.
Nelson starts a fight between Hindus and Muslims of Jhansi but the Rani makes them reunite and realise their mistake. Mangal Pandey is to be hanged. The Rani as Rana Bhakura is imprisoned meanwhile by the Prince of Mot who considers Rana Bhakura to be the murderer of King of Mot since she had a gun during his father's death. It was actually Nelson who shot him. The Rani tries to reveal the truth but Nelson threatens her that he would kill Karma if she does so. Rana Bhakura, the Rani is subjected to various humiliations. When she aks the prince to fight in a competition, Nelson poisons her sword which nearly kills the prince. She subjugates the elephant which was supposed to kill her. She meets Ladai Sarkar, who did not forget her past. She was still an alley to the British. She tries to kill Lakshmibai and crown herself the queen of jhansi. But, Nelson cheats her and imprisons her along with lakshmibai. Both talk and Rani Sarkar realises her folly and starts to respect Lakshmi and understands the true nature of the British. Nelson reveals the truth to Lakshmibai that he was responsible for the death of her true son Damodar Rao. Nana Saheb, who pretends to be an ally of British saves the Rani and the Rani kills Nelson.
Queen Victoria, who wanted to finish Lakshmibai and stop the revolt, sends Hugh Rose, her commander to Jhansi for inviting her to a Peace treaty where she would be killed. Rani also accepts the invitation and plans with her allies and plans to bomb the cake which would be cut by the officials of the Company. They notice the presence of a betrayer (Rao Dhulaju)which is revealed by Nana Saheb. He tells the British about their plans. In the party, the Rani shifts the bomb to a chariot, keeping Rao Dhulaju under supervision. FInally, they succeed in their plan and the Rani tackles the plans laid by Hugh Rose to kill her.The Rani also kills Rao Dhulaju. In the explosion, Hugh Rose survives. The Rani realises the presence of a betrayer when Rao Dhulaju who survives, returns and apologises. Meanwhile, Damodar is kidnapped and the Rani succeeds in saving him and kills Hamilton. Damodar who is frightened, loses his speech when Laddi is appointed to take care of him. The British tactfully kill the priests in the JokanBagh Church and put the blame on Lakshmibai who is subjected to disgrace.
The Rani somehow detects Laddi to be the betrayer after returning from a war which she won taking a risk. (The British kidnapped all the allies of Jhansi, they are only helped by Kali, the lead of a hunter group). Finally, in the last month of the serial, an engraged Queen Victoria sends a very huge uncountable battalion in the sole aim of capturing Jhansi with Hugh Rose as the lead. She fights to her best bravely but decides to give up her palace since many soldiers were dying. She does so with a sad heart. Ghaus Khan, Karma are dead. Capt Gal from Magadha destroys the army of Tatya Tope who were to enter Jhansi. Hugh Rose provokes the Rani by sending a dead person in a bag, which was replaced by food. Remembering all her pleasant days in the palace, with the aim of spreading the revolt throughout India, the Rani escapes Jhansi with Damodar, jumping bravely from the walls of the palace. Her father is meanwhile captured and hanged, leaving the Rani mentally depressed. Meanwhile, Ladai Sarkar and Tatya Tope comes to help. They, along with the Rani's female battalion, attack and succeed in the war. Meanwhile, treachery, disguised as help comes to Lakshmibai in the name of soldiers from Gwalior. Ladai Sarkar detects this but the British (disguised as soldiers of Gwalior) poison her. Ladai Sarkar arrives but is too late to inform Tatya about the treachery. She dies. The Rani buries her and cries for her. Jalkari Bai, disguised as the Rani dies in place of her, sacrificing herself. Meanwhile, Rao Saheb (a childhood friend of the Rani) arrives and informs Lakshmibai that the palace of Bithoor was salvaged by fire by the British, Vahini Sahiba is dead and Nana Saheb is supposed to have escaped to Nepal. He also is happy about the news that the East India Company would no longer rule India but Queen Victoria would directly do so. But,the Rani is not convinced and replies that Queen Victoria, who was behind the scene so far, would directly take over all injustice in her hands. They decide to take help from Gwalior. But, Dinkar Rao, an ally of British in the Court of Gwalior Maharaj JayajiRaosindhia, misleads both sides to war.
The Rani captures Gwalior from Jayajiraosindha. She crowns Rao Saheb as the new king of Gwalior but sadly, he turns out to be a selfish king, who takes drugs and enjoys along with his soldiers. A disgusted Rani Lakshmibai comes out of the place and regrets her action. She says that if Bharat were going to be ruled by people like him, it would still remain as a slave of the British for another 100 years. Dinkar Rao takes the misunderstanding as an advantage and sends a telex to Lord Canning who sends his army to Gwalior. Raghunath Singh discovers the British soldiers arriving in Gwalior and informs Lakshmibai. Rani lakshmibai tries to wake up the soldiers but in vain. Rao Saheb is still unconscious.Meanwhile, Gal arrives and warns Lakshmibai that this would be her last day. Lakshmibai boldly replies that even God would not want her until she achieves her dream. Gal then calls the Rani for war. The Rani changes the mind of the Indian sepoys by revealing their consciousness to themselves and also by telling the true nature of the British to them. Only a handful of soldiers are with her. She does not force anybody to take part in this war. She asks Ragunath Rao and her Guru Tatya Tope, a choice but they insist the rani to take them along with her. Ragunath says he is equivalent to 10000 soldiera. Sunder is prepared to give her life for the Rani. Tatya demands all these as his Guru Dakshina. They shout HAR HAR MAHADEV. Meanwhile, Gal who thinks that Rani Lakshmibai would be frightened and would surrender, is surprised to see the army of Gwalior marching towards them triumphantly. The Rani says that the fire of the revolt had spread all over India and that even small children of Bharat were prepared to give their lives for it. She warns the British to leave the country. She says that her other name is kranti (fire) and that she has no death. She says that this spirit would always be there with all the Indians. She informs Gal that his Queen Victoria's true face would be revealed to all the Indians. Meanwhile, Dinkar Rao arrives and hands over the telex proof of Queen Victoria's plans to him, leaving an angry Rani Lakshmibai. She lays siege and attacks the British gallantly and fought heroically. When Gal tries to escape with the documents, he is defeated by the Rani who checkmates him from all sides. But, Dinkar threatens him that he would burn all the documents if anything happened to Cap Gal. Rani Lakshmibai loses attention when Gal stabs her unexpectedly in her stomach. Even then, with the spirit of Goddess Kali, she takes out the sword from her stomach and stabs Gal in his eye, who is half blinded. She defeats Dinkar Rao and retrieves back the documents. Meanwhile, Ragunath and Tatya arrive and Lakshmibai escapes with Damodar. Sunder is shot by the British as she tries to unite the Rani with her son. Tatya says everyone would be proud of her noble sacrifice. Rani lakshmibai is seated in a chariot, where blood is dripping from her body. She is reminded of the Gayatri Mantra while Tatya Tope advises her not to lose hope. But, Manu says that her time had come and she hands over the documents to Tatya, asking him to take them to Kanpur, wherein it would be published by Australian writer, John Lang. Meanwhile, the Britishers attack the chariot and Ragunath is shot dead as he disguises and leaves as Lakshmbai. He praises Lakshimbai and falls dead. Rani Lakshmibai requests Tatya Tope to leave the place with Damodar where would handle the British alone. But, Tatya is not convinced, since he had none in this world except Manu. Manu offers her life as her Guru Dakshina and thanks Tatya Tope for having sculpted her into a freedom fighter. After they leave, the rani, gathering her life force enters a temple of Goddess Durga. She meets all her late relatives and companions.Vahini Saheba tells Manu, her daughter to get up while she says that she is tired. Peshwa Baji Rao reminds Manu that the sun had not yet set and that her duty was not yet over. Moropant is surprised to see his daughter tired and refusing to fight. Gulam Ghaus Khan salutes the Rani for her confidence and asks her to take care of the nation's enemies. Karma arrives and says that if she did not fight now, all of the time won't be able to. Finally, her husband JHANSI NARESH GANGADHAR RAO NEWALKAR arrives and reminds Lakshmibai that he is always with her. All instill the spirit in her and chant as she gets up. All become ornaments in her body. When the British soldiers sneak into the temple, the Rani shouts HAR HAR MAHADEV and fights valiantly like Goddess Durga. She kills all the soldiers when Gal shoots her thrice and stabs her forcibly for the second time like a coward. The Rani warns Gal that he would be awaitng only for death in his future. She backstabs Gal and leaves the place. She confronts a passing charioteer and asks him to perform her last rites and asks him not to reveal her death to anybody. She also warns him that the British should never see her corpse. She chants HAR HAR MAHADEV and breathes her last. Meanwhile, a revolt against Queen Victoria spreads in the whole of Bharat. Lord Canning is unable to control the situation and disposes Gal. He thereby declares Rani Lakshmibai dead while the citizens are not prepared to accept it due to the lack of her corpse. They keep the spirit of freedom alive. Rani Lakshmibai is fire. She lived, is living and will continue to live in the hearts of Indian people forever. She is immortal. She says that her dream was that the spirit of freedom should be within every Indian's heart wherein Mahraj Gangadhar Rao arrives riding a horse and picks her up to heaven.

The Tamil version version of the serial - Jhansi Rani came to an end on 27 January 2012 and the Telugu version Veera Naari Jhansi Lakshmi came to an end on 4 February 2012. Hindi version of the serial has English subtitles debuted on Zee TV USA and ATN Canada on October 10, 2011 and approximately ending on August 2013.
Earlier this story was rejected in Maharashtra state because of the show does not reflect the real life of the Lakshmi Bai. For example, it had many fictitious characters like Aaji Saheb and Vaishali from the beginning. Later on many characters like Ganga and Laddi were also added in fictitious line.
Originally named Manikarnika and nicknamed Manu, Lakshmibai was born at Kashi (Varanasi)[1] to Moropant Tambe and Bhagirathibai Tambe, a Maharashtrian Karhade Brahmin couple. She lost her mother at the age of four. Her father worked at the Peshwa court of Bithoor; the Peshwa brought her up like his own daughter and called her "Chhabili" for her light-heartedness. She was educated at home.
Because of her father's influence at court, Lakshmibai had more independence than most women, who were normally restricted to the zenana. She studied self-defence, horsemanship, archery, and even formed her own army out of her female friends at court. Tatya Tope, who would later come to her rescue during the 1857 Rebellion, was her mentor.
Lakshmibai was married to Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, the Maharaja of Jhansi, in 1842, and thus became the queen of Jhansi. After their marriage, she was given the name Lakshmibai. The Raja was very affectionate towards her. She[2] gave birth to a son, Damodar Rao, in 1851. However, the child died when he was about four months old. After the death, the Raja and Rani of Jhansi adopted Anand Rao. Anand Rao was the son of Gangadhar Rao's cousin and was later renamed as Damodar Rao. It is said that the Raja of Jhansi never recovered from his son's death, and he died on 21 November 1853.
Because Damodar Rao was adopted, the British East India Company, under Governor-General Lord Dalhousie, applied the Doctrine of Lapse, rejecting Rao's claim to the throne and annexing the state to its territories. In March 1854, Lakshmibai was given a pension of 60,000 rupees and ordered to leave the palace and the Jhansi fort.
On May 10, 1857 the Indian Rebellion started in Meerut. This began after rumours that the new bullet casings for the Lee Enfield rifles were coated with pork and beef fat; British commanders insisted on their use and started to discipline anyone who disobeyed. During this rebellion sepoys killed many British soldiers and officers of the East India Company.
Unrest began to spread throughout India. During this chaotic time, the British were forced to focus their attentions elsewhere, and Lakshmibai was essentially left to rule Jhansi alone. During this time, she was able to lead her troops swiftly and efficiently to quell skirmishes breaking out in Jhansi. She kept Jhansi relatively calm and peaceful in the midst of the unrest in northern India. For example, she conducted the haldi-kumkum ceremony with great pomp and ceremony before all the women to provide assurance to her subjects and to convince them that Jhansi was under no threat of an attack.[3]
Up to this point, Lakshmibai had been hesitant to rebel against the British, and there is still some controversy over her role in the massacre of Company officials, their wives and children on 8 June 1857 at Jokhan Bagh.[4] Her hesitation finally ended when British troops arrived under Sir Hugh Rose and laid siege to Jhansi on 23 March 1858.
She rallied her troops and fought fiercely. An army of 20,000, headed by Tatya Tope, was sent to relieve Jhansi and to take Lakshmibai to freedom. The British, though numbering only 1,540 in the field so as not to break the siege, were better trained and disciplined than the raw recruits, and these inexperienced soldiers turned and fled shortly after the British began to attack on 31 March. Lakshmibai’s forces could not hold out. Three days later the British were able to breach the city walls and capture the city. Lakshmibai escaped by jumping from the wall at night with her son. She fled from her city, surrounded by her guards, many of them women.[4]
Along with the young Anand Rao, the Rani decamped to Kalpi along with her troops, where she joined other rebel forces, including those of Tatya Tope. The Rani and Tatya Tope moved on to Gwalior, where the combined rebel forces defeated the army of the Maharaja of Gwalior after his armies deserted the rebel forces. They then occupied a strategic fort at Gwalior. However, on 17 June 1858,[5] while battling in full warrior regalia against the 8th (King's Royal Irish) Hussars in Kotah-ki Serai near the Phool Bagh area of Gwalior, she died. The British captured Gwalior three days later. In the British report of the battle, General Sir Hugh Rose commented that the Rani, "remarkable for her beauty, cleverness and perseverance", had been "the most dangerous of all the rebel leaders".[6]
The lack of a corpse to be convincingly identified as that of Lakshmibai convinced Captain Rheese that she had not actually perished in the battle for Gwalior, stating publicly that: "[the] Queen of Jhansi is alive!"[7] It is believed her funeral was arranged on the same day near the spot where she was wounded. Lakshmibai was memorialized in bronze statues at Jhansi and Gwalior, both of which portray her on horseback. Other equestrian statues can be seen in Agra and Pune.
Her father, Moropant Tambey, was captured and hung a few days after the fall of Jhansi. Her adopted son, Damodar Rao (formerly known as Anand Rao), fled with his mother's aides. Rao was later given a pension by the British Raj and cared for, although he never received his inheritance. He settled down in the city of Indore and spent most of his life trying to convince the British to restore some of his rights. He and his descendants took the last name Jhansiwale. He died on 28 May 1906, at the age of 58.
