What Are Microclimates?
Learn About Microclimates - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. We talk about microclimates, and that means special areas in your neighborhood, or your town, that have a different sort of climate, just a little bit different, from what is nearby. Let's take freezing weather, which we do not get much of here in Southern California, but we do freeze. If you are down in a low point, and there is some places nearby here that have a little, what we call a river, you would probably call it a stream, running through it, and that is low. They all freeze every winter here. Go up 500 feet, up to the hill, and they will not be touched by frost. That is a microclimate. Low is freezing, higher is less, it does not get as cold. One easy way to sort of figure those out is to look at the weather reporter, call them, And you can buy, at not too much expense, or you can get up at 2:00 in the morning for a few nights when it is freezing, or you think it is freezing. Go out and take the temperature in your yard. If you have a high-low thermometer, it will take it for you automatically. Otherwise go out there with your thermometer and freeze in your pajamas. It should be two or three o'clock in the morning, that is the coldest time. Then check that temperature for several nights against the temperature that is on the news. They might say, in this case, they might say Oceanside went down to 34. If your temperature was 36, you know that you are consistently a little better, and if it is ...

Fruits for Microclimate
Picking Fruits for Your Microclimate - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Picking Fruits for Your Microclimate A micro-climate is basically the weather patterns that hit your specific geography. So, for example, in Palos Verdes where I live, uh, the micro-climate on the east side of the hill is vastly different than the micro-climate on the east side of the hill where they get a lot more fog coming off the ocean. If you can't find an expert that will tell you exactly what works best... , is try something. If it doesn't work this year, try something different the next year. In southern California, for example, the micro-climate here doesn't get very many chill hours and it's very important to find low chill variety of trees that have a very short requirement for dormancy phase. If you grow varieties that are not low chill, you will not sometimes get any fruit at all, or, if you do get fruit it will be substandard, won't taste very sweet... . So, you need to talk to someone who knows about low chill or just specifically search out low chill, especially for trees. In Massachusetts, the types of crops you can grow there are totally different. For example, blueberries do really well there, but, here you need to get low chill varieties of blueberries. So, in California, make sure you look for low chill varieties for your fruits. And, especially things like your fruit trees, blueberries... , strawberries... , things that do well in coastal climates. You have to ...

Microclimate Monitor / Freescale Kinetis MCUs
www.freescale.com - The Make It Challenge featuring Kinetis MCUs is Freescale's latest design contest. This video showcases a design using a variety of technologies, such as the Freescale Kinetis K50, K60, and the Freescale Tower System. The climate across a landscape may not be the same. There are warmer, wetter parts at some places and colder and drier parts elsewhere. These microclimates influence vegetation, yield and pathogen activity. Monitoring the microclimate may help the community to make informed decisions on the suitable plant or tree for a given micro area (parcel) within the landscape. Microclimate data can be used to assist in determining plant location, spread and longevity. It may be possible to leverage microclimate to grow plants that are not local to the population, even in a back yard. The microclimate monitor uses multiple nodes. Each node can have a sensor network to monitor ambient light, temperature, humidity, soil pH etc. A set of nodes communicate to a coordinator. The coordinator monitors sensors for health and climate data. In addition, the coordinator provides a graphical UI to read sensor data. The coordinator uses a Wi-Fi module to communicate with a computer for data storage or to a mobile device/smart phone. Key design goals were low power requirements, connectivity, scalability and the ability to harvest solar energy.

Coping with Micro Climate Change in Naivasha Basin
Film high-lighting climate change that is happening in and around Naivasha, Kenya and how it is affecting the lives of every day people. The film also points at possible man-made reasons why the climate is changing. Produced by CBCF and Arid Lands Information Network (ALIN). Filmed and editing during a training camp in May 2009.

Mugabe - microclimate
This is a piece done for an exhibition in July 2007. The film explores passive reactions to political plight and social unrest as illustrated by the tumultuous regime of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and specifically the way political domination can lead to the isolation of dictatorial figures, leading to the creation of a self-sustained microclimate of existence, wherein the surrounding climate of turmoil and unhappiness is wilfully dismissed. A complex compositing procedure was implemented to create the wall which grows around the central figure of Mugabe as the film progresses. Once the main timeline was completed, the film was reversed and slowed down to a fifth of its normal frame rate, then projected down onto an ice enclosure, which was then melted as the film played over it. This process in turn was filmed with a camera mounted above the projector. This sequence was then reversed and sped up again to the original frame rate, meaning that as the film plays, the wall of ice solidifies. A similar effect could have been achieved by overlaying the film of melting ice using software alone, but it wouldn't have been the same; not as organic or integral . . . and it was a challenge making a rig out of tables, chairs and ladders and balancing projectors and cameras precariously.
