M Karunanidhi says younger son MK Stalin will succeed him as next DMK chief
Hinting that younger son MK Stalin will be his heir, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Thursday perhaps laid to rest speculation on who will win the battle between the two brothers - Stalin and MK Alagiri - to lead the party after him. Speaking at a public function in Chennai, the 88-year-old Karunanidhi, however, said he will work for the party "till his last breath". "Till my last breath I will take care of the party work. For the question of who after me, Stalin is sitting here as an answer," Karunanidhi said.

Stalin will lead DMK after me: Karunanidhi
Ending years of speculation about who would succeed him as party chief, DMK's M Karunanidhi hinted yesterday that his son Stalin would become the next party chief. He also said he will work for the party till his last breath. That has left doubt about what role he foresaw for his other son MK Alagiri and daughter Kanimozhi. Karunanidhi has always refrained from naming either of his sons as the next party chief but most political observers believed that Stalin was in line to succeed his father as the party chief. Mamata Banerjee, M Karunanidhi to skip PM's dinner party - NewsX
Trinamool Congress supremo and Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is going to skip the dinner thrown by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to mark UPA-II's third anniversary. In a further snub to the PM, the DMK President M Karunanidhi, will not be attending too. The dinner is being hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the leaders of UPA constituents and MPs and instead DMK's Parliamentary Party Leader TR Baalu would represent the party. That will be the third time Mamata Banerjee be absent in the dinner, however, the Congress has refuted any rift among the UPA constituents. For more log on to alpha.newsx.com

NewsX@9: Stalin, not Alagiri to lead DMK
NewsX@9 is a NewsX special show which debates the main news event of the day. It's the clearest announcement of his intention so far. DMK president, M Karunanidhi, has said that his younger son, MK Stalin, will be his successor. But given that Stalin and his older brother, MK Aragiri, are bitter rivals - will the DMK see a smooth transition? Karunanidhi's eldest son and union Minister Alagiri had openly resented to hints of Stalin leading the party and that he would not accept anyone else other than his father as leader. A couple of months ago, the Madurai strong man, had made no secret about his unhappiness over selection of party functionaries in his home turf, particularly in the youth wing headed by Stalin. Also, in April last year, the fight for supremacy between the two brothers peaked and Alagir walked out of a general council meeting in Coimbatore. So we debate today - Can Stalin keep the family and DMK together? Has Karunanidhi pushed DMK towards a political crisis? Is Stalin the right challenger to Jayalalithaa? We debate this on the show and try to evolve consensus among our panelists over the issue. Watch this NewsX debate special show NewsX@9. For more log on to www.newsx.com

Karunanidhi Hopeful Of UN Intervening In Tamils Issue
DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Monday said he was hopeful that the United Nations could effectively intervene in the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, notwithstanding an internal report that spoke of the UN's failure to prevent mass civilian casualties during the civil war that ended in 2009. Talking to reporters on behalf of the Tamil Eelam Supporters' Organisation (TESO), a forum floated by him, Mr. Karunanidhi said, "I believe these efforts will definitely bear fruit. We have submitted TESO resolutions on the way forward to both the UN Human Rights Council and the UN headquarters. We are sure they will consider the issue at an appropriate time and take suitable action." He was answering a question from reporters on what he could expect from the UN after its own internal report had disclosed its failure in Sri Lanka. To another question on whether he expected a Congress-led government to support his demand for a referendum to determine the future of Tamils in Sri Lanka, Mr.Karunanidhi said, "We will continue to press the Centre to extend their cooperation to us." Elaborating, he said it was because of the DMK's insistence that India had voted against Sri Lanka on a resolution in the UN Human Rights Council earlier this year. The DMK has also given ntice for a motion in Parliament on Sri Lanka, he added. Earlier, at a meeting of TESO held at the DMK headquarters, the organisation thanked top UN officials for receiving the resolutions adopted by TESO at a conference held here in ...
