Toxic waste at Bhopal union carbide plant for 30 years, groundwater contaminated
Solid toxic waste has been lying at the site of the gas tragedy in Bhopal, the union carbide factory, for over 30 years. A new study of groundwater in and around Bhopal reveals a high level of contamination. Activists are demanding that the state government takes action. A solar evaporation pond in the deserted union carbide factory is aptly called 'Zehreela talaab' (poisonous pond) by the locals. Toxic waste from the factory had been pumped into the pond with the management assuring that it wouldn't affect the groundwater. But now the Indian Institute of Toxical Research has turned that assurance on its head. It gathered 26 water samples and concluded that Bhopal's groundwater is indeed contaminated.

Inside the Union Carbide Disaster Site, Bhopal
This morning we sneaked into the Union carbide factory..a rusting hulk of metal and pipes. You will see the storage tank known as '610' which is where the deadly chemical reaction first started. We walk through the grounds that are overgrown with weeds and thorny bushes, past the derelict concrete buildings where many of the chemicals were stored. The perimeter wall is only 100 yards or so from the holding tanks and backing this broken boundary are the shacks of those who still live in the shadow of the factory. This was the worst hit community...with bodies all over the streets and the train line some 50 yards further ...my guide told me his father said that a train rolled by that night and cut thru these victims as they lay dead on the tracks. On the train itself very few survived...this has haunted his father for all these and he can longer talk about it.. almost as if the memory gets stronger. Next to the train tracks are 1000 gallon black water tanks that hold nothing ..the taps are dry and the residents here asked me to complain as no one listens to them!...HISTORY A gas leak from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India saw the beginning of the worst industrial disaster in history. It has come to be known as the Hiroshima of the chemical industry. 40 tonnes of deadly methyl isocyanate gas, used in the manufacture of the pesticide Sevin, spewed from the plant into the surrounding areas. 8-10000 people died within the first 72 hours and another 15000 people ...

Bhopal, India - 25 years after Union Carbide gas leak
A BBC news report from Bhopal, India, 25 years after the Union Carbide gas leak that killed over 8000 people. The people of Bhopal are still suffering from this event. Today is a morbid 25 year anniversay in Bhopal, India. On Dec 3, 1984, an American chemical plant (Union Carbide) leaked 40 Tons of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas. 8000 people died over 3 days. Tens of thousands died later, over half a million survived their exposure. The legacy is birth defects, cancer, stunted growth. Present day, ground water is still contaminated by the now abandoned chemical plant. (Independent testing found cancer-causing chemicals at a density 1000 times higher than WHO acceptable quantities in water people drink.)

Kids go after Bhopal fugitive Union Carbide CEO
Akash Mehta,12, and brother Gautama,15, founders of Kids For A Better Future try to hand deliver extradition warrants to Union Carbide lawyers of former CEO Warren Anderson and other former Union Carbide management for criminal responsibility releasing in Bhopal December 3, 1984 40 tons of very toxic cyanide compound methyl isocyanate that has so far killed over 15000, injured more than 500000, and poisoned water and land that continues to cause birth defects and serious disease. They were turned away by security guards. India's courts have tried those responsible while in absence and given them lenient sentences but which have not been served, the perps preferring to forfeit their minimal bail. The kids are joined by their grownup friend Brian Mooney a cultural anthropologist who has studied the disaster and compares it in scale to the current BP mess. Union Carbide's assets and liabilities were bought out by Dow Chemical in 2001 who then claimed they are not responsible for a factory they did not operate. Bhopal gas tragedy: Union Carbide not liable for claims, says US court - NewsX
A US federal court has ruled that neither Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) nor its former chairman Warren Anderson were liable for any environmental remediation or pollution-related claims made by the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. In one of the world's worst disasters at the Bhopal plant, formerly owned and operated by Union Carbide India Limited, an entity once owned by UCC, leaked poisonous gases killed an estimated 22000 people in the December 1984 accident. In his ruling Wednesday, US district Court Judge John F. Keenan concluded that -- even when viewing the evidence in the most favourable light for the plaintiffs -- UCC is not directly liable, nor liable as an agent of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), nor liable under a veil-piercing analysis. Indians of Bhopal Protest Over US Union Carbide Industrial Toxic Poisoning
25 years ago toxic poisoning killed thousands of people in Bhopal, India. The US industrial company Union Carbine was responsible at the time, and 25 years on the Indian community which still suffer from diseases caused by the poisoning say that President Obama and the US have double standards, where BP are forced to clean up the Gulf oil disaster, yet won't clean up the existing toxic pollution caused by Union Carbine in Bhopal.

Protest murals on wall of abandoned Union Carbide factory, Bhopal
Murals painted on the walls of the abandoned Union Carbide pesticide factory, site of the World's worst ever industrial disaster, Union Carbide Road, Bhopal. The wording on the murals speaks for itself- in Englich and Hindi!HISTORY A gas leak from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India saw the beginning of the worst industrial disaster in history. It has come to be known as the Hiroshima of the chemical industry. 40 tonnes of deadly methyl isocyanate gas, used in the manufacture of the pesticide Sevin, spewed from the plant into the surrounding areas. 8-10000 people died within the first 72 hours and another 15000 people have died as a result of their exposure to the gas. Another 120000 have chronic medical conditions that require constant healthcare. (For comparison, Chernobyl is estimated to have caused 57 direct deaths, with some 4000 additional deaths from cancer). Union Carbide, the perpetrator of the disaster, is now owned by Dow. Dow have consistently refused to accept any responsibility for the disaster or its aftermath. The disaster site was never cleared of its toxic waste. The environment, all around the factory, is heavily contaminated and the toxins have now leached in to the drinking water aquifer. An estimated 25000 people have no other regular source of drinking water and are forced to drink this water contaminated with toxic chemicals. The Bhopal Medical Appeal funds the Sambhavna Clinic.
