Byzantium, The Lost Empire: 1. Building the Dream
See all 4 parts of this series here: www.youtube.com For more than 1000 years, the Byzantine Empire was the eye of the entire world -- the origin of great literature, fine art and modern government. Heir to Greece and Rome, the Byzantine Empire was also the first Christian empire. After a year of filming on three continents, TLC unlocks this ancient civilization, spanning 11 centuries and three continents. Pass through the gates of Constantinople, explore the magnificent mosque of Hagia Sophia and see the looted treasures of the empire now located in St. Marks, Venice. Byzantium, brings to life an empire that, while seemingly distant, is very closely linked to the evolution of Western Civilization. Traces the growth of the first Christian empire, one that lasted for over a thousand years and the maturity and decline of Byzantium through its conquest by the Ottoman Turks in 1453. John Romer, the author and on-screen guide for the series, breathes life into the city and the powerful ideas that made the Byzantium a thriving cultural and commercial center while western Europe was slogging through the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages. At its height, Byzantium housed the most precious Christian relics, including a piece of Christ's cross. Located on the border of Europe and Asia, it ruled an empire that extended across Asia Minor and the Balkans. Then, after the rise of Islam, the empire shrank until little was left outside the city walls. Byzantium turned to Europe for help in ...

Byzantium, the common root
History of the Eastern Roman Empire Byzantium: 330 -1453 At the beginning of 4th century, the Roman Empire entered an economic, social, military and religious crisis and its Capital got divided, Christianized and transferred to Constantinople so as to survive. While the West collapsed and entered a dark age, the East stayed on. The Hellenic part of the Empire, not only survived, but developed and prospered. Byzantium, the heir of the Hellenic legacy reunited and synthesized the old knowledge of Egypt and Persia that, together with the new Christian religion, conformed a world and a culture of which others would be born. One of them was the Islam, and when it expanded vertiginously, it looked everywhere for Science, Knowledge, and Culture and gathered and was also translated it from Byzantine Empire. Thus, together with the Persian and Indian influence, the Islamic world arose. Another one was the Russian-Slav world. The Byzantine people provided them not only with the alphabet (Cyrillic), but also with the religion, the culture, the administration, the art, the knowledge and the myths. And the European Western world When it awakened and was reborn, the Byzantine wise people appear feeding the search of the Classics and by transmitting all their knowledge and their manuscripts that had been conserved from the Ancient world. Byzantium was the common root of the Middle East and the Western world, and a river that flowed from the Antiquity to the 15th century, of which they ...

The Palaiologos Dynasty of Byzantium
The song is ΣAPANTA MHLA KOKKINA 'Forty Red Apples' (saranta mila kokkina) from The Guardians of Hellenism VOL.4, (Pontos and Cappadocia) The Palaiologoi were the last of the Byzantines (1259-1453), and this video is a tribute to the heroism of these Christians against the hordes of barbaric Turks. Translation: Forty Red Apples all tied in a kerchief Forty loves if you have, you won't find one like me. Forty Red Apples threaded in a line, My lamb, take the road tbat will bring you to me. Come my dear one, come to me, If you talk to me I'll lose my mind. I chose this song of Pontos because generally, Pontian music is full of devotion to Christ, and is marked with pain of loss, a reminder for braver and honour, and its dialect is the closest to Ancient Greek. The explanation found in the CD booklet explains the love, the struggle and the courage: 'A love song from Kars. In most of the 84 villages of Kars, the Greeks were in the majority. Though many had settled there of old, it is estimated that during the Russian-Turkish war of 1877, over 70000 Greeks sought refuge in Kars region. Generally, either due to immigration or changes in the borders, more than 700000 Greek-Pontians were to be found in Russian territories. If we add those already living there since antiquity, Byzantine and post-Byzantine times, the total Greek population in Russia was well over one million.' (The Guardians of Hellenism VOL.4, Pontos and Cappadocia, p31)
