Islamist group breaks truce in Mali conflict
www.euronews.com One of the Islamist groups occupying northern Mali has said it is withdrawing its offer made last month to stop fighting. Ansar Dine, which has been taking part in talks in Burkina Faso, blamed the Malian government for scorning the offer. The group, along with tuareg rebels, had said it was ready to cease hostilities and negotiate with the authorities after the UN Security Council gave the green light for an international armed force to be deployed in Mali to oust the Islamists. Ansar Dine is one of three Islamist movements dominating northern Mali since June. Meanwhile pictures of three Algerian diplomats held hostage by suspected Islamist militants since last April have been broadcast by a pan-Arabic TV channel. The men appealed to their country's president to find a solution over their plight. Algeria's government said it was mobilised to secure the hostages' release. Mali has become an international headache ever since a military coup removed the president in March. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

AUSTRALIAN ISLAMIST SPOKESMAN, UTHMAN BADAR, SPEAKS TO NINE'S TRACY GRIMSHAW
A spokesman for international Islamist group Hizb Ut-Tahrir, Uthman Badar, speaks live to Tracy Grimshaw about the group's views that democracy is an illusion. Uthman Badar, Australian spokesman for the international Islamist group Hizb Ut-Tahrir, speaks to Tracy Grimshaw about the group's anti democracy views. The group has called on all Muslims in Australia to join in the fight for a transnational Islamic state. British group leader Burhan Hanif said that democracy is forbidden for Muslims, who should live purely under Islamic law and a female delegate at the groups recent conference in Australia urged all Muslim women to maintain the Islamic struggle by insisting on their right to wear the burqa/niqab.

American Islamist Group Seeks to Silence Critics
01 March, 2012 - WASHINGTON -- The so-called Arab Spring has left the Muslim Brotherhood on the rise -- and not just in the Middle East. The Brotherhood's allies are also exercising their influence here in the United States. These American Muslim pressure groups are targeting anyone who criticizes Islamic extremism. So far, their tactics are working. CAIR Targets War Hero Retired Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin's courage leading missions in war zones like Iraq, Somalia, and Panama earned him a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Yet an invitation to speak at a West Point prayer breakfast resulted in anything but a hero's welcome. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, joined a coalition of far left groups protesting Boykin's appearance because of his alleged "Islamophobia." Boykin, a strong critic of radical Islamist groups like the Brotherhood, eventually withdrew from the event. "In consultation with the faculty and staff at West Point -- who clearly wanted me to withdraw to save them the embarrassment of cancelling my invitation -- I did so," Boykin said. Hamas Ties CAIR, which led the charge against Boykin, has come under major scrutiny from federal authorities in recent years. In 2007, it was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorism financing trial in American history. In 2009, a federal judge ruled that "ample evidence" exists linking CAIR to the terror group Hamas. And in a 2011 congressional testimony, FBI Director Robert Mueller said "no formal ...

Nigeria: Islamist Ansaru behind French kidnapping
www.euronews.com Islamist group Ansaru says it was behind the kidnapping of a French engineer in Nigeria. 63-year-old Francis Colump was taken on December 19 when around 30 gunmen attacked his residence in the remote northern town of Rimi, near the border with Niger. A security guard and a neighbour were killed in the assault. Ansaru said the attack was motivated by France's ban on the full face veil known as the niqab, as well as its support for military action in Mali. It said it would continue to target French citizens until France changes it's stance on these issues. Islamist groups have controlled the north of Mali since seizing control in April. Ansaru which is thought to have loose ties to the better known Boko Haram also claims responsibility for a dawn raid on a police station in the Nigerian capital last month in which it says hundreds of prisoners were released. Mali Islamist terror fears growing: French hostage appeals to Paris for help
A French man taken hostage by Islamist rebels last week in southwest Mali says, in a video filmed by his captors, that he blames France's foreign policy for his abduction and urged Paris to respond to his abductors demands. It is not clear what the militants demands were, but Islamist groups in the Sahara have routinely demanded ransoms of millions of dollars to release hostages. The news comes as dozens of Algerian jihadists were reported to have arrived in the northern capital of Timbuktu to support al-Qaeda linked groups who are imposing an increasingly brutal version of Sharia law in the vast northern areas under their control. European leaders are growing increasingly anxious that Mali could turn into a safe-haven for Islamic extremists and a platform for militant attacks, including in Europe. Almost two-thirds of the country fell into Islamist hands after a coup toppled the government earlier this year.

The Islamist Revolution
With a weak and divided leadership amongst the Palestinians, a new right wing government in Israel, and recurring political instability throughout the broader Middle East, the salience of different types of Islamist groups on regional and international politics is not likely to be on the wane anytime soon. Policy wonks and diplomats in Europe and the United States continue to debate how to respond to the continued successes of such groups. Introducing his new book Resistance: The Essence of the Islamist Revolution, Alastair Crooke will provide background on what he calls the "Islamist Revolution" in the Middle East, helping to offer strategic insights into the origins and logic of Islamist groups which have adopted military resistance as a tactic, including Hamas and Hizbollah. Tracing the essence of the Islamist Revolution from its origins in Egypt, through Najaf, Lebanon, Iran and the Iranian Revolution up to the present day, Crooke unlocks some of the thorniest issues surrounding stability in the current Middle East landscape. Crooke, who is Director and Founder of Conflicts Forum and based in Beirut, is a former Mideast adviser to EU High Representative Javier Solana, was a senior staff member of Senator Mitchell's Fact-Finding Committee into the causes of the Intifada in 2000-2001, and has mediated cease-fire negotiations with Israel, Islamic Jihad, and Hamas in the past. He has become one of the most hands-on, informed, and controversial interpreters of modern ...

Tuareg rebels battle Islamists for north Mali town
BAMAKO — Dozens of people have been killed in clashes between Islamic radicals and secular Tuareg fighters in northern Mali since Friday, witnesses and officials said. "It's a real massacre, there are dozens dead," said a Malian security source, referring to the fighting in the region of Gao. Witnesses on the ground confirmed the scale of the clashes. The fighting between Islamist group the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), which is backed by Al-Qaeda's north African branch, and the ethnic Tuareg separatists of the Azawad National Liberation Movement (MNLA) has been concentrated around the town of Menaka, near the border with Niger. "There needs to be a genuine international investigation to find out what happened at Menaka," said the Malian security source, adding that dead bodies "could still be seen in the town". A lawmaker for the Menaka district, Bajan Ag Hamato, said some of his fellow Tuareg had been killed "defending the town against MUJAO", including local political leader Alwabegat Ag Salakatou and six of his entourage. "They were labelled MNLA, but in reality they were local patriots who wanted to defend their town," he said. The MNLA has said its fighters killed 65 fighters from MUJAO and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) during the fighting, suffering just one death and 13 injuries on its side. MUJAO for its part has said it killed more than 100 MNLA fighters and took 20 prisoners. Mali, once considered one of west Africa's most ...

Mali Volunteer Militia Trains to Fight Islamist Rebel Group Ansar Dine, Al-Qaeda in W. Africa
With most of the north of the West Africa state of Mali now in the hands of an Islamist rebel group linked to al-Qaeda, a group of civilians in the country's capital Bamako say they are in training to take it back. They are part of a three hundred strong volunteer militia group who want to do what the government army seems unable to. Head of BBH volunteer brigade Mamadou Douawa: "We were all shocked and blindsided that our army failed in 72 hours and abandoned two thirds of the nation's territory. We consider that it's a problem of manpower so the youth have to come fill this gap in the army so that we can fight. But the volunteer groups appear to be no match for the Islamist militants who have taken control of most of the north and imposed Sharia law. Music has been banned, women risk being beaten if they are uncovered and people are being whipped in public for various misdemeanours. Timbuktu which was a centre of Islamic learning from the 13th to the 17th centuries has been overrun by Islamist militants Ansar Dine and al-Qaeda affiliated Islamic Maghreb, which have also destroyed half of the World Heritage tombs and mausoleums in the name of Islam. The loss of these shrines has sparked worldwide outrage but it has also caused great sadness and disapproval among Malians who have traditionally practiced a tolerant form of Islam; often described as an open and intellectual interpretation of the religion. Analysts believe it is not only Mali's unique culture, including its ...
