Nine months after the Costa Concordia struck rocks, workers in Giglio, Italy continue in efforts to salvage the luxury cruise liner. The plan for the world's largest salvage operation is to turn the vessel upright then tow the Costa Concordia away. The salvage efforts will cost over $300mn, but with an upcoming trial of ship's captain, Costa cruises can't afford to spare any expense. Al Jazeera's Charlie Angela reports from Giglio Island. Police underwater video inside stricken Costa Concordia
Italian officials say divers have pulled out a woman's body from the capsized Costa Concordia, raising to 13 the number of dead in the Jan. 13 accident off the Tuscan island of Giglio. Italian police released underwater video footage of their efforts to find bodies on the stricken Costa Concordia vessel. Coast Guard divers have been concentrating on parts of the ship where survivors have said many passengers were awaiting evacuation the night of January 13 after the Concordia's hull was gashed by a reef as the cruise liner came too close to the island. A detailed 3D animation of the Costa Concordia cruise liner disaster. The comments about bow thrusters were based on current media reports at the time. As far as I was able to determine from my research they were electrically operated and may have been running from backup power. I will leave the comments in the animation file as they are for now until it can be definitely confirmed. The original animation file can be download from the following link and run in Google Earth: sketchup.google.com The 3D model of the ship can be downloaded from: sketchup.google.com The 3D model of the helicopter can be downloaded from: sketchup.google.com

Telephone call between Costa Concordia Captain and Italian Coast Guard (ENGLISH SUB)
Here is a translation of the transcript of the conversation between Capt. Francesco Schettino, commander of the grounded Costa Concordia, and Capt. Gregorio De Falco of the Italian coast guard in Livorno. In the conversation, De Falco repeatedly orders Schettino to return to the ship to oversee the evacuation, while Schettino resists, making excuses that it's dark and that the ship is listing.

Giant Mussels Rescued From Costa Concordia Wreck
Scientists intervene to protect rare giant mussels found under the wreck of the capsized cruise ship Costa Concordia. Full Story: On the surface, salvage workers are still extracting the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which ran aground off Italy in January. Below the surface, scientists working at the site say the ship recently revealed something unexpected. Rare giant mussels were discovered after plants shaded by the capsized ship died. Scientists are now working to remove more than 200 specimens to protect them from planned removal works. The giant mussels, of the Pinna Nobilis species, used to be common in the Mediterranean but their population has shrunk in the last decade due to over-hunting and environmental changes. A team monitoring the environmental impact of the wreck removal process found the mussels by chance. Marine Biologist, Andrea Belluscio, who is in charge of environmental monitoring of the removal works, says the mussels were at risk of being destroyed and were a lucky find. [Andrea Belluscio, Marine Biologist]: "We found the Pinna Nobilis around the ship totally by chance. We were mapping out a stretch of Neptune Grass, assessing the extent of the damage caused by the Concordia accident, and in an area where Neptune Grass has died due to the shade cast by the wreck a large number of these animals, about 200 of them, came to light." The removal of the ship will take over one year, and will require the construction of an underwater platform to lift the ...

Salvage Operation to Bring the Capsized Costa Concordia to the Surface Begins
Two massive cranes will pull the half-submerged wreck of the Costa Concordia upright and air tanks attached to the hull will refloat the vessel to allow it to be towed to a port and broken up. The news came after salvage plans were unveiled at a news conference in Rome on Friday (May 18). The 290-metre long cruise liner capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio after hitting rocks on January 13. At least 30 people died and two are still unaccounted for. Titan Salvage of the United States and Italian firm Micoperi, who have been chosen to handle the removal, said they were confident the operation would succeed even though it has never been carried out on a ship this size. "We feel confident that we can do it and we feel confident that with our partners we will do it safely and with the least disturbance to the environment and the least disturbance to the economy of Giglio," said Richard Habib, president of Titan Salvage, which is owned by US group Crowley Maritime Corp. The head of Italy's Civil Protection Agency Franco Gabrielli said the ship would be stabilized by the end of August to avoid any risk of it shifting down a rocky ledge. It is then set to be refloated by February at the latest, and towed away to an Italian port. The removal operation has been reported to cost at least $300 million. The salvage operation is expected to begin within a few days.

Salvage Work Continues on Costa Concordia 10 Months After Capsize
Ten months on from the capsizing of the Costa Concordia cruise liner, salvage work is progressing slowly with the onslaught of winter expected to hamper the operation. Meanwhile, lawyers are preparing to resume a pre-trial hearing. Full Story: Salvage work on the capsized Costa Concordia liner is progressing slowing off the Tuscan island of Giglio with the looming threat of wintry weather promising to slow the work even further. Work on the 951 foot-long cruise liner is still in its initial phases. Teams are seeking to stabilize the vessel to prevent it shifting down the rocky ledge it is resting on and plunging into the deep water of the surrounding marine reserve. US firm Titan Salvage and Italian firm Micoperi are handling the re-float and removal of the ship, which is likely to cost at least $300 million and last about a year. And while the logistic of the salvage operation are worked through on the coast, further inland lawyers prepare to discuss evidence in the trial against the Concordia's captain Francesco Schettino, set to resume on Monday. Prosecutors accuse Schettino of causing the disaster on January 13 by bringing the Concordia too close to shore and causing the capsizing of the cruiser. He is under formal investigation in the case, accused of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship before the evacuation of more than 4200 passengers and crew was complete. Local residents in Giglio are keen for the trial to start and hope to find out what really happened and ...

A cruise ship with over 4-thousand people on board has grounded off Italy's north-west coast. At least 3 bodies have been recovered, with more than a dozen others still missing. Most of those on board the Costa Concordia were evacuated from the vessel after it hit a reef near the Island of Giglio, late on Friday. Passengers reported a loud bang during dinner, and were told the ship had stopped because of electrical problems. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com
