DrownedinSound.com or DiS is a UK based music webzine financed by artist management company Silentway (who manage Mick Hucknall and Brett Anderson). The site is an editorially independent music website.

DiS started as an email fanzine in 1998 called 'The Last Resort' but was relaunched by founder Sean Adams as Drowned in Sound in 2000. It is currently edited by Sean Adams.

The freelance writing team is currently spread across the globe, with contributors based in four continents - North America, Asia, Europe and Australasia. The site is mostly based on contributions from unpaid writers and has an integrated forum to allow for discussion and comments on interviews, news and reviews. It also includes a user-rated database of artists and bands as well as details for most live music venues (big and small) in the UK. Aside from space for comments, there are separate forums for general discussion, music related discussion and advertisements for people requiring bands or musicians. The site has over 60,000 registered members, and gets around 470,000 unique visitors per month.

In November 2007, DiS teamed up with ad-supported download site RCRDLBL.com to launch an audio and video blog, entitled "Drownload".^[1]

DiS have been involved with Summer Sundae festival since 2008, and in 2010 kick off their 10th Anniversary celebrations with a line-up headlined by The Futureheads and Frightened Rabbit. Previously, they hosted the Friday night billing of the Rising Stage as being presented in partnership with Drowned in Sound.^[2]

A percentage of DrownedinSound.com (the web site) and DrownedinSound's record label are owned by Silentway Ltd., the independent management company who look after Simply Red, Stina Nordenstam and Brett Anderson.^[3] Silentway continue to invest in both businesses. The remaining shares in the record label are owned by founder Sean Adams.

In October 2007, it was announced that DiS had formed a partnership with Rupert Murdoch's Sky media company.^[4] This joint venture with BSkyB was named Quietus Group.

On August 18, 2008, it was announced that DiS's partnership with BSkyB had ended by mutual consent,^[5] making the majority of its staff redundant in the process.^[6]

On March 19, 2006, The Observer Music Monthly ranked DrownedinSound.com 9th on its list of top 25 internet websites. In November 2006 it passed the 150,000 unique readers a week mark and was nominated in the Best Music Website category at the 2007 PLUG Awards and the Best Website category at the 2007 Shockwaves NME Awards.

The site and a handful of its writers received nominations at the 2006 Record of the Day awards, held in London on November 21, 2006. The site won in the category of Best Podcast and finished runner-up in the category of Best Website for the second year running.^[7]

In September 2007, DiS was nominated in two categories at the annual BT Digital Music Awards - best music magazine and best podcast (audio). In November 2007 DiS was named Best Online Music Publication at the annual Record of the Day awards.^[8] In 2010 Drowned in Sound won Best Publication at the Record of the Day awards.

Sharon Van Etten is an American singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, New York City.

Her songs were described by the music website Pitchfork Media as having "some echoes of folk tradition but generally in a more personal, introspective space."^[2] NPR Music asserts: "Her songs are heartfelt without being overly earnest; her poetry is plainspoken but not overt, and her elegant voice is wrapped in enough rasp and sorrow to keep from sounding too pure or confident."^[3]

Van Etten was born and raised in New Jersey where she attended North Hunterdon High School^[4]. She moved to Tennessee to attend Middle Tennessee State University, where she discovered a variety of influential music.^[5] After moving back home to New Jersey, Van Etten was encouraged by Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio to pursue a career in music.^[6]

Her official debut, Because I Was In Love was released in spring 2009. In April 2009, Van Etten performed vocals and guitar for the song "Coming Home" written by Jeremy Joyce for the feature film "Woman's Prison." ^[7] In August 2009, she appeared in Hospice, the critically acclaimed album by indie rock group The Antlers and performed vocals on the track "Thirteen". In January 2010, Van Etten was a featured artist on Weathervane Music's Shaking Through Web Series. On September 21, 2010 she released her second album Epic.^[8] She also contributed backing vocals to The National's song "Think You Can Wait" from the soundtrack to the film Win Win in 2011.^[9]

Her third studio album, Tramp, was released on February 7th, 2012 on Jagjaguwar.^[10] Tramp was produced by The National's Aaron Dessner, and recorded in his studio over the period of several months. After the release of the album, she will embark on a tour beginning in Philadelphia. The album features guest appearances from Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Matt Barrick, Zach Condon, and Jenn Wasner.^[11] In regard to the album's guest appearances, Van Etten told American Songwriter magazine, "People may think 'They got this star-studded cast,' but what it boils down to is that they’re friends that wanted to participate on this record."^[12] "Tramp" debuted at No. 75 on the Billboard 200 charts.

Perfume Genius is the stage name for Seattle-based solo artist Mike Hadreas. His second album, Put Your Back N 2 It, was released on February 20, 2012.^[2]

Hadreas began composing music after he moved from New York to live with his mother in Everett, Washington. In 2008, he set up a MySpace page under the name Perfume Genius.^[3] His debut album, Learning, was released on 21 June 2010, through Turnstile Records in Europe and Matador Records in the United States.^[4] In 2011, Mike supported the band Beirut on their North American tour.^[5] Hadreas' sophomore album, Put Your Back N 2 It, was released on February 20, 2012.^[2] The promotional video for the album, featuring Hadreas and pornographic actor Arpad Miklos embracing each other wearing only underwear, was deemed unsafe for family viewing by YouTube.^[6]

Fyfe Antony Dangerfield Hutchins (born 7 July 1980) is an English musician and songwriter, best known as the founding member of the indie rock band Guillemots.^[1]

Born in Moseley, Birmingham, in 1980, he moved to Bromsgrove at the age of eight. He studied at Bromsgrove School where he was also the singer in the band Senseless Prayer. He was also music teacher at Cranbrook College for a brief period.

Dangerfield composed a choral piece performed at The Lichfield Festival in 2000 - a setting of Christina Rosetti's "A Better Resurrection". This led to a commission from Ex Cathedra Chamber Choir to write a choral setting of one of the 'O Antiphons' for Ex Cathedra's Christmas Music by Candlelight concert in 2000. This has been performed many times since, was included on Ex Cathedra's Christmas Music by Candlelight CD which received some glowing reviews, and has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM.

In 2002, Dangerfield was commissioned to write "A Stray Dog for Congratulations" – for three children’s choirs, four percussionists, two pianists and keyboard – for The Lichfield Festival (the only commission that year). The performers included the Backbeat percussion ensemble, as well as the Sydney Children’s choir.

In 2007, Dangerfield was commissioned by the John Feeney Charitable Trust to write a piece for the CBSO for one of the concerts that took place in October 2007 to celebrate the re-opening of Birmingham Town Hall. This was In Wait, a 30-minute orchestral composition, performed by cellist Eduardo Vassallo and the CBSO conducted by Nick Ingman. The second half of the concert was given by Guillemots accompanied by the CBSO.

In 2009, cellist Natalie Clein performed the world première of a new work by Dangerfield called "Eggshell Walker" at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Dangerfield has since written two further works for Natalie Clein - "Pogo and the Cage" in 2010, and "Turquoise Black", which she premièred at the 2011 Bath Festival - a performance also broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in June 2011.

He composed music for the play, Howl's Moving Castle, based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones, which is to be performed in London at Southwark Playhouse in the winter 2011 - 2012.

Prior to Guillemots, Dangerfield played in Senseless Prayer (who played a radio session on the late John Peel's show), Fyfe Dangerfield and The Accident, and The Courtesy Group (the band of his brother, Al Hutchins) who have supported Guillemots several times on tour, usually in Birmingham, but, most recently, in London.^{[citation needed]} Dangerfield contributes to the band's upcoming debut album, Tradesman's Entrance. Dangerfield recently contributed a cover of Larrikin Love's "Well, Love Does Furnish a Life" to their EP A Day in the Life. In late 2006, Fyfe released a very limited split vinyl single with his friends The Kittens, on which he contributed a demo of a solo song, "Delusia". This took place shortly before he played two solo shows (albeit, mostly consisting of solo renditions of Guillemots songs) in Birmingham and London, with support from Richard Burke, Emmy the Great, and Fyfe's older brother, Al.

In 2007 he sang "Lovers' Dream" with Anna Ternheim on her EP, Lovers Dream and More Music For Psychotic Lovers.

Dangerfield also leads an improvising group Gannets (sometimes written as gaNNets). The members are Dangerfield on keyboards, Alex Ward and Christopher Cundy clarinets, Dominic Lash double bass, and Steve Noble drums. The band appeared on BBC Radio 3's "Jazz on 3" in March 2008, and at the London Jazz Festival in November 2011, the latter session also being subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Gannets played a ten-date tour of England in January–February 2012.

Dangerfield released the album Fly Yellow Moon under his own name on January 18, 2010. The album's first track "When You Walk in the Room" was the single of the week on iTunes in the week starting March 15, 2010.

A TV commercial for the British chain store John Lewis, first broadcast in April 2010, features Dangerfield singing the Billy Joel song She's Always a Woman.
