6a Epicurus on happiness and death
Part 1 of 4. This is part of a whole series of lectures (playlist: www.youtube.com for my online course Phil 115 Philosophical Inquiry, SUNY Fredonia. It is an introduction to Philosophy with no prerequisites, which satisfies the SUNY Humanities General Education requirement. See the fuller description below. Want to take this course for credit? Info for Summer 2013 is here: www.fredonia.edu School: www.fredonia.edu Department: www.fredonia.edu my department page: www.fredonia.edu my personal page: trinities.org The aim of this course is to introduce students to philosophy by considering four core areas of philosophy and some central problems in each. These branches are: Ethics (What is a good life? Why act morally? Is morality relative to cultures? What makes some actions right and others wrong? What is the relation between religion and morality? Is death bad for the one who dies?) Metaphysics (Do we have free will? Are free will and moral responsibility compatible with a scientific world view? Is there such a thing is an immaterial soul?) Epistemology (Can we know anything? What is it to know? To know something, must I be certain about it?) Philosophy of Religion (What sort of being is God supposed to be? Can one prove that God exists? Can one prove that God doesn't exist?). We will focus on classic more than on contemporary sources, although both will be used.

Two Kinds of Hedonism (Aristippus and Epicurus)
In this lecture from my Spring 2012 Ethics class at Marist College, we examine the moral theory of Hedonism, contrasting two of its classic representatives: Aristippus and Epicurus. We discuss the nature and value of pains and pleasures, bodily and mental, Aristippus's and Epicurus's theories, and how a Hedonist of either sort carries out practical reasoning

The Riddle of Epicurus
Is God Omnipotent and Omnibenevolent? Either God wants to abolish evil (natural disasters, diseases, suffering, famine etc), and cannot; or he can, but does not want to. ... If he wants to, but cannot, he is impotent. If he can, but does not want to, he is wicked. ... If, as they say, God can abolish evil, and God really wants to do it, why is there evil in the world?

Jefferson, Lucretius, Epicurus; Declaration of Independence; Pursuit of Happiness
"I take the liberty of observing that you are not a true disciple of our master Epicurus, in indulging the indolence to which you say you are yielding. One of his canons, you know, was that "that indulgence which presents a greater pleasure, or produces a greater pain, is to be avoided." Your love of repose will lead, in its progress, to a suspension of healthy exercise, a relaxation of mind, an indifference to everything around you, and finally to a debility of body, and hebetude of mind, the farthest of all things from the happiness which the well-regulated indulgences of Epicurus ensure; fortitude, you know, is one of his four cardinal virtues. That teaches us to meet and surmount difficulties; not to fly from them, like cowards; and to fly, too, in vain, for they will meet and arrest us at every turn of our road.... [A paragraph follows, inviting Short and his friend Correa to Monticello, with some news of the progress at the University] I will place under this a syllabus of the doctrines of Epicurus, somewhat in the lapidary style, which I wrote some twenty years ago; a like one of the philosophy of Jesus, of nearly the same age, is too long to be copied. - LETTER: Thomas Jefferson to William Short - October 31, 1819 www.csun.edu {I don't mean to bore my subscribers with wierd stuff like this, but it is all history, and in this case it is directly connected to the founding of the United States of America, and because ...

Epicurus and the Good Life
Though his name is often misleadingly associated with indulgence in sensual pleasures, the philosopher Epicurus developed a far-reaching system of thought that incorporated an empiricist theory of knowledge, a description of nature based on atomistic materialism, and views about the importance of friendship and both mental and physical pleasures for leading "the good life." These notions of what constitutes a good life have preserved the relevance of Epicurean philosophy for contemporary life. A diverse array of thinkers, including Thomas Jefferson, Diderot, and Jeremy Bentham, have considered themselves Epicureans. So what is the legacy of Epicurus, and how have his ideas become integrated into the fabric of modernity? With great pleasure, John and Ken welcome David Konstan from Brown University, author of "A Life Worthy of the Gods: The Materialist Psychology of Epicurus."
