Coldplay, Rihanna and Jay-Z at Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games
The London 2012 Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony saw Coldplay, one of Britain's best selling music acts, joined by global superstars Rihanna and Jay-Z in a spectacular celebration of achievements of the Paralympic athletes and an amazing summer of sport. Celebrating the seasonal cycle of ancient and modern festivals that take place throughout the year, world-class musical performances took the audience on a journey through Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. The ceremony also honoured servicemen and women, and particularly the work of charity Help for Heroes, with Captain Luke Sinnott, a double amputee, climbing to the top of the flag pole to hoist the Union Flag. A motorcade of weird and wonderful vehicles then stormed into the Olympic Stadium, as ex-serviceman Rory Mackenzie delivered a rousing speech. The evening also saw the Paralympic Flag was handed over to Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes, cueing a colourful musical performance by Rio 2016. At the end of the night, as the Paralympic Flame began to fade, ParalympicsGB gold medallists Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock transferred the Flame to a Paralympic Torch. They then proceeded to light hundreds of torches held by members of the cast throughout the field of play before it was extinguished. The ceremony ended with a spectacular fireworks display over the Olympic Stadium and Olympic Park, followed by fireworks along the River Thames. Led by Closing Ceremonies Artistic Director Kim Gavin, Music Director David ...

GOLD MATZINGER Gunther AUT Austria SILVER NASCIMENTO Yohansson BRA Brazil BRONZE UGGL DENA PATHIRANNEHELAG P SRI Sri Lanka LONDON, September 4 Gunther MATZINGER (AUT) won the men's T46 400m, for athletes with an upper body limb impairment, in 48.45 but, in many people's eyes, the real star of the race was the silver medallist Yohansson NASCIMENTO (BRA). NASCIMENTO, who famously asked his girlfriend Thalita to marry him after his win over 200m earlier in the Games, was the only T45 runner in the final and came through with a strong finish to move from fourth to second in the final 100m and finish in a world record for his more severely impaired class of 49.21. Jason Smyth - Paralympian
Visually impaired sprinter Jason Smyth achieved fame at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games when he won the 100m (10.62) and 200m (21.4 3) T13 races in world record times. He fully merits his nickname of “The Fastest Paralympian on Earth”.
The Derry man is based in Florida and trains with US sprint king Tyson Gay, a former world champion and owner of the second fastest 100m of all-time. Gay describes Jason as “one of the most technically gifted sprinters alive”.
Jason’s success in Beijing was no surprise as two years earlier he had won gold in the 100m (10.86) and 200m (21.83) at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships in the Netherlands. A back injury ruled him out of the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in New Zealand, but he, together with fellow Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, competed at 2011’s IAAF World Championships in Korea.
Jason achieved the Olympic “B” standard time for 100m (10.22 seconds) but fell just short of the “A” standard of 10.18 – this would have made him the first track athlete to compete at both Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Jason is now focused on retaining his Paralympic 100m and 200m titles. The International Paralympic Committee have marked him as one to watch at the Games – he’ll have high hopes of glory in London’s Olympic Stadium.

This video features some of the biggest upsets - Alan Fonteles beating Oscar Pistorius in the 200m T44 race, Will Bayley losing in the table tennis finals and Jody Cundy's cycling disqualification. It also features some of the biggest highs of the Games - former F1 driver Alex Zanardi winning his first gold in Brands Hatch and Ellie Simmonds winning her race and being presented a medal by British Prime Minister David Cameron. It also features Jonnie Peacock's epic win in the Olympic Stadium. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement.
