Peter Murphy (musician)

Peter John Joseph Murphy (born 11 July 1957) is an English singer and musician. He was the vocalist of the rock group Bauhaus and later went on to release a number of solo albums, such as Deep and Love Hysteria. Thin with prominent cheekbones, a baritone voice, and a penchant for gloomy poetics, he is often called the "Godfather of Goth".

Early life

Murphy was born near Northampton, Northamptonshire. He was raised in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. He was a school friend of Daniel Ash.

Career

Bauhaus

Daniel Ash convinced Murphy to join Bauhaus, one of the establishing acts of the goth movement. Their use of spacey recording effects and theatrical aesthetics was evocative of glam rock; they became an influential group in the early days of gothic rock. In 1983, Bauhaus appeared during the opening sequences of the horror film The Hunger, performing one of their most popular songs, "Bela Lugosi's Dead". The camera focused almost exclusively on Murphy during most of the scene, panning only briefly to the stars David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve. Bauhaus reformed in 1998 for a tour.

Peter Murphy (footballer, born 1922)

Peter Murphy (7 March 1922 – 7 April 1975), often referred to as "Spud" Murphy, was an English footballer who played as an inside left. He played professionally for three clubs, Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City. He is possibly best remembered for the incident in the 1956 FA Cup Final when Manchester City's goalkeeper Bert Trautmann broke a bone in his neck when diving at Murphy's feet.

Biography

Murphy was born in West Hartlepool, County Durham, but when he was four years old moved to Coventry with his family. He was with both Coventry City and Birmingham as an amateur footballer before his career was interrupted by the Second World War. He turned professional with Coventry City in May 1946 at the age of 24, making over 100 appearances and scoring at a rate of a goal every three games.

Manager Arthur Rowe took him to Tottenham Hotspur in June 1950 for a fee of £18,500. He played as an inside-forward, deputising for the injured Les Bennett, in the "push and run" side that won the League championship in 1950–51. On Bennett's return to fitness, Murphy found himself being played out of position on the left wing, so when Birmingham City bid £20,000 for him in January 1952 he was willing enough to drop down a division to return to the Midlands.

Peter Murphy (footballer, born 1990)

Peter James Murphy (born 13 February 1990 in Liverpool) is an English professional footballer who plays for Morecambe primarily as a midfielder but is also a capable defender.

Murphy joined Stanley as a 16-year-old. Towards the end of the 2007–08 season, he spent a few weeks on loan at Northern Premier League club Prescot Cables to gain experience, and signed his first professional contract with Stanley on his return from loan, in April 2008. He made his debut for Stanley on 26 April, in the Football League Two clash with Wrexham which ended as a 3–1 win. He signed a new contract in May 2010 and again in 2012. He then signed for Wycombe Wanderers in 2014 on a free transfer. He opened the scoring for Wycombe on his debut, as they beat Newport County 2-0.
