Flipside Memphis - Beale Street Flippers
MORE VIDEOS: www.livefrommemphis.com When we went to film these guys, they were already flipping in the middle of the day. We met back up with them in the afternoon, and they were still flipping. Onto the Grizzlies game - flipping during halftime. After the game, more flipping that night. To these guys, flipping is a way of life. If you've been to Beale Street, chances are you've seen the Flippers. They attract huge crowds with their mad acrobatic skills, and once they start, it's hard to stop watching. The Flippers operate as a "family unit" which is evident from the younger generations they train on Beale (often showcased as the opening act and passing the tip bucket around the crowd). The Flippers' street smarts have paid off - growing from mere street performers to a group of young professionals that's been featured in major films (The Firm), television shows (America's Got Talent), and toured the country performing during NBA halftime shows. These guys impress me every time with their immaculate technique and near effortless execution. I mean really, have you seen the amount of air these guys get in a backflip?!?! BOPPIN' IN MEMPHIS - Downtown & Beale Street
This video shows a bit of the magic I found one evening during sunset in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. It all started with a glance at the sky... I could tell it was going to be a classically beautiful sunset down on the Mississippi River. So, I grabbed my camera and window bracket mount, pointed my car toward downtown and started the camera rolling. What you see here are the results of that magical 30 minutes spent riding around my hometown.

Joe Venuti's All Star Orchestra, Eddie Lang, Jack Teagarden - Beale Street Blues (1931)
Giuseppe (Joe) Venuti (Sept.16,1903 - Aug.14,1978) was a US jazz musician and pioneer jazz violinist. Venuti claimed to have been born aboard a ship as his parents emigrated from Italy, though many believe he was simply born in Philadelphia. Later in life he said that he was born in Italy in 1896 and that he came to the US in 1906. Considered the father of jazz violin, he pioneered the use of string instruments in jazz along with the guitarist Eddie Lang, a childhood friend of his. Through the 1920s and early 1930s, Venuti made many recordings, as leader and as featured soloist. He worked with Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers, Bing Crosby, Bix Beiderbecke, Jack Teagarden, the Boswell Sisters and most of the other important white jazz and semi-jazz figures of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Venuti and Lang recorded a series of milestone jazz records for the OKeh label during the 1920s. However, following Lang's early death in 1933, his career began to wane, though he continued performing through the 1930s. He was also a strong early influence on western swing players like Jesse Ashlock, not to mention the fact that Lang and Venuti were the primary influences of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. -------------- Eddie Lang (Oct.25,1902 - March 26,1933) was an American jazz guitarist, considered by many to be the Father of the Jazz Guitar, the finest jazz guitarist of his era, and to be the greatest rhythm player of all time -------------- Weldon Leo "Jack" Teagarden ...

Beale Street Blues Bilk Acker 1990
Beale Street Blues Bilk Acker 1990 Mr Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. Acker has changed the style of his band from trad jazz in the sixties to the more Condon styled Approach. He replaced banjo with piano and here in or around 1990 during a concert somewhere in Germany they play Beale Street Blues. and yes indeed, in the Condon arrangement, nice and loose with the specific riff chorus at the end of the tune.

Recorded live, December 30th. 2008 Slidin' Selena - trombone Lielian Tan - drums Koos Greven - banjo Michel Muller - trumpet Bert Brandsma - bass saxophone Also some talking while traveling on the ship from the mainland to schiermonnikoog. "Beale Street Blues" is a 1916 song by American composer and lyricist WC Handy. The title refers to Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, the main entertainment district for the city's African American population in the early part of the twentieth century, and a place closely associated with the development of the blues. The song was published by the Pace and Handy music company in 1917, but was first popularized for a mass audience when sung on Broadway by Gilda Gray in the 1919 musical revue Schubert's Gaieties. Like many of Handy's songs, Beale Street Blues is a hybrid of the blues style with the popular ballad style of the day, the opening lyrics following a line pattern typical of Tin Pan Alley songs and the later stanzas giving way to the traditional three-line pattern characteristic of the blues. "Beale Street Blues" has been recorded by dozens of noted artists, from early recordings by Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, and Alberta Hunter, to more modern versions by Nat King Cole, Lena Horne, Dixieland Crackerjacks and Tommy Dorsey. The song itself is now in the public domain in the ...
