Walmart Bribery Scandal
Walmart is in the middle of a huge bribery scandal in Mexico. The company allegedly paid government officials as much as $24.5 million to provide faster access to store-building permits. But why does the US care about what Walmart is doing in Mexico? It's a question a lot of people have been asking these days, so we'll take a good look at the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. A lot of business groups complain that it puts them at a disadvantage in competing with other companies abroad. So does enforcing a code of ethics on business abroad, make sense? Labor journalist Mike Elk discusses.

Walmart Uses Bribes to Break Laws, Subvert Public
"Wal-Mart longed to build in Elda Pineda's alfalfa field. It was an ideal location, just off this town's bustling main entrance and barely a mile from its ancient pyramids, which draw tourists from around the world. With its usual precision, Wal-Mart calculated it would attract 250 customers an hour if only it could put a store in Mrs. Pineda's field. One major obstacle stood in Wal-Mart's way. After years of study, the town's elected leaders had just approved a new zoning map. The leaders wanted to limit growth near the pyramids, and they considered the town's main entrance too congested already. As a result, the 2003 zoning map prohibited commercial development on Mrs. Pineda's field, seemingly dooming Wal-Mart's hopes."* What does Walmart do when it wants to build on land where they've been prohibited? Make huge bribes. That's what a New York Times investigation found had happened when Walmart wanted to build in Mexico. Ana Kasparian and Ben Mankiewicz break it down. *Read more from David Barstow/ New York Times: www.nytimes.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Support The Young Turks by Shopping bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: bit.ly Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com

The Bribery Aisle: How Wal-Mart Used Payoffs to Bribe Its Way Through Expansion in Mexico
DemocracyNow.org - New details have emerged in the massive bribery scandal behind Wal-Mart's expansion into Mexico, where the corporate giant now operates one in five of its stores. After exposing the bribery earlier this year, The New York Times has now visited dozens of Mexican towns and cities to document the payoffs the company used to get its way. We're joined by the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter who broke the story, David Barstow. As a result of Barstow's reporting, the Justice Department is now considering whether Wal-Mart violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which makes it a crime for American corporations to bribe foreign officials. Corrupt policemen perfect the art of taking bribes
www.ntv.co.ke Two days ago, NTV highlighted the ill practices by Traffic police officers that collect bribes from matatu operators. The officers photographed engaged in the act so swiftly as if they had mastered or choreographed their ill habits. But today we have discovered that while the officers are to blame for taking bribes, matatu operators are also participating in the vice by appropriately placing bribes in door handles and driving licenses in order to prevent officers from being caught in the act.

Super PAC Donors Have Corporate Bribery Issues
"A federal law to prevent US companies from paying bribes to business overseas recently came to the forefront when The New York Times reported that Walmart officials had covered up alleged bribes made by company representatives in Mexico. The retail giant faces federal investigation for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). Wealthy individuals connected with Walmart have meanwhile taken advantage of new campaign finance rules that allow for unlimited contributions -- and raise fears of unlimited influence over a future administration. Jim and Alice Walton, children of the founder of Walmart, have contributed $200000 each to Restore Our Future, the super PAC supporting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign...The Waltons are not alone among super PAC donors with businesses facing FCPA investigation. At least three other major contributors currently have FCPA worries, and others may be looming. The US Chamber of Commerce, another big-money campaign spender, continues its lobbying to loosen enforcement of the anti-corruption law...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Paul Blumenthal in The Huffington Post: www.huffingtonpost.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: twitter.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com

Big Pharma's massive bribery network exposed: the Health Ranger on the Alex Jones Show, July 2012
Mind-blowing interview with Glaxo whistleblower Blair Hamrick. Two of the most influential alternative media organizations on the 'net -- InfoWars.com and NaturalNews.com -- have blown the lid wide open on Big Pharma's massive bribery network. Through exclusive interviews with pharma insiders, InfoWars and NaturalNews have done what the mainstream media refuses to do: grant a platform to credible whistleblowers who are exposing the systematic, criminal Big Pharma bribing of doctors who willingly accept kickbacks to write prescriptions for high-profit pharmaceuticals.

Sibel Edmonds Deposition, 8/8/09: PART 1 of 5
The long-gagged FBI translator turned whistleblower speaks publicly on the record, under oath, for the first time since being twice-gagged by the Bush Administration's use of the "state secrets privilege". Edmonds became a linguistics specialist in the FBI counterintelligence department following 9/11.
In the deposition, she discusses startling allegations of blackmail, bribery, espionage, and infilitration of the U.S. government by current and former U.S. Congressmembers, high-ranking State and Defense Dept. officials, and agents of the Turkish government.

Wal-Mart Accused of Covering up Mexican Bribery Scandal
Transcript by Newsy: www.youtube.com BY JOE DEUTSCHMANN You're watching multisource global video news analysis from Newsy. A New York Times report claiming a Wal-Mart cover-up of widespread bribery in Mexico spurs more media investigation. "Wal-Mart de Mexico was the company's brightest success story, pitched to investors as a model for future growth... Confronted with evidence of corruption in Mexico, top Wal-Mart executives focused more on damage control than on rooting out wrongdoing." Wal-Mart headquarters first learned about its Mexican stores' bribery practices in 2005. New York 1 says Wal-Mart conducted an investigation that uncovered more than $24 million in payoffs, but... "...the company never told law enforcement officials... Executives at the subsidiary tried to conceal the bribes, which allegedly were paid to quickly obtain permits allowing Wal-Marts to be built across Mexico." The bribes violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, a law established in 1977 to prohibit bribery of foreign officials, as well as require accounting transparency in foreign business. Fox News describes Wal-Mart's current approach to the case: "...its latest, ongoing investigation is being handled by outside lawyers and accountants who are experts with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The company also said it has tightened procedures and expanded training in Mexico to ensure compliance with the law." But a writer for Forbes says bribery is a common business practice in countries ...

The Ruth Rendell Mysteries: Bribery & Corruption (1992 TV Series) (1/8)
The Ruth Rendell Mysteries is a British television series made by TVS and Meridian Television (in association with Blue Heaven Productions) for ITV, which was aired between August 1987 and October 2000. The series comprises adaptations of the works of Ruth Rendell, many of which are based on her extensive range of short stories. In some cases, the stories were either expanded from Rendell's original material, or elements from a number of stories were woven together into one episode. A smaller number of episodes were based on Rendell's full-length novels, eg 'Going Wrong', starring James Callis and 'Front Seat', starring Janet Suzman. There were a total of 55 episodes (between August 1987 and October 2000) centering on the Detective Inspector Wexford stories (sub-titled 'An Inspector Wexford Special'), starring George Baker and Christopher Ravenscroft, and an additional 29 episodes (between December 1992 and August 1999) which did not feature Wexford. -britishmysteries.weebly.com For the latest mobile apps and other cool gadgets visit bitly.com/britishmysteriesshop now!!!
