Estonians Visit the Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs
Members of an Estonian Local Action Group, the West Estonian Islands Partnership, visited the UK to find out more about the work of Making it Local, the Local Action Group for the Blackdown Hills and East Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Local Action Groups (LAGs) are locally managed grant schemes, which are tailored to their geographical area. Incorporating funding from the EU, Defra, South West RDA and LEADER, they fund projects to strengthen the local economy, improve quality of life and enable rural communities to thrive. Making it Local aims to use the outstanding landscapes and local skills in its area as a springboard for healthy and lasting development. The Estonians visited Blackdown Hills businesses whose projects benefited from grants awarded by Making it Local, or its predecessor, LEADER+. They also had the opportunity to discuss the projects with members of the Making it Local team, including the Chairman, Devon County Councillor Paul Diviani, and Vice Chairman, Mike Ellingham of the National Farmers Union. Local film-maker, Justin Owen, was commissioned to make a documentary of the visit and followed the Estonians to capture footage of the various businesses and projects, as well as many of the key points raised along the way. The full length version of the film was premiered at the visitors' accommodation on their last night - this is a cut-down edition.

Reskilling the Valley - Apricot Centre Project funded by Dedham Vale AONB 2009/2010 (presentation)
The Apricot Centre with the support of the Dedham Vale AONB Sustainable Development Fund is researching the available skills and techniques to support a sustainable and local lifestyle in the Dedham Vale AONB (Area of Outstanding natural Beauty) and the Stour valley. The project is finding the the keepers of these skills, personally interviewing and recording them, then helping to transfer these skills to the younger generation in a style which is creative and fun for all involved. Over the next 20 30 years the way we live in the Dedham Vale and; Stour Valley will have to change dramatically to a post peak oil and climate change lifestyle, one that is re-localised and less dependent upon oil and carbon sources of energy. Some of the changes will use modern technologies and ideas but some will draw on skills from the past.
