People sentenced to jail in Los Angeles County typically serve only a fraction of their sentence. In this video, a criminal defense lawyer explains the process.
Inmates at Los Angeles County jails are typically entitled to "good time / work time" credits of at least 50% of their sentence. That means a person sentenced to one year will rarely serve more than 6 months actual time.
But nonviolent offenders often serve much less than 50%. People serving time for shoplifting or DUI, for example, sometimes serve 10% or less of their sentence.
This applies to all Los Angeles County jails, including the Men's Central Jail, Twin Towers Jail, Pitchess Detention Center (Wayside), and the Lynwood Jail.

Two downtown Los Angeles jails were placed on lockdown Wednesday and several people were injured after a fight broke out between Latino and African-American inmates, authorities said.
Twin Towers Correctional Facility and the Men’s Central Jail were locked down, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Brandon Longoria said. Help had been requested for a possible riot, Longoria said about 1:15 p.m.
Another deputy later said the riot occurred at the Men’s Central Jail but both facilities — which are across the street from one another — were on lockdown.
Eighty inmates were involved in the fight, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said. The “disturbance” occurred inside a dormitory at about 12:30 p.m. and lasted about 10 minutes, she said.
Four patients were transported from the Men’s Central Jail with injuries that were not life threatening, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The Sheriff’s Department later stated in a news release that the inmates were all treated on scene.
One of the patients was stabbed and three others had superficial wounds, authorities on scene said.
A source inside the jail told KTLA the fight occurred between black and Latino inmates.
Medical captains went inside a ward to triage patients, according to Margaret Stewart of LAFD.
More than a LAFD ambulances could be seen staged outside the Men’s Central Jail, located at 441 Bauchet St. (map), aerial video from Sky5 showed.
About 59 firefighters responded, as well as 13 rescue ambulances and five fire units, Stewart said.
One shirtless man was brought outside and placed in a chair on a green triage mat that had been set up outside an area labeled “ambulance entrance” near inmate transport buses, aerial video showed.

Twin Towers Correctional Facility
The Twin Towers Correctional Facility, also referred to in the media as Twin Towers Jail, is a complex erected in Los Angeles, California. The facility is located at 450 Bauchet Street, in Los Angeles, California and is operated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The facility consists of two towers, a medical services building, and the Los Angeles County Medical Center Jail Ward.
The 1.5 million square foot (140,000 m²) complex was opened in 1997, though it remained empty for a period prior to opening because of lack of operating funds. During that time, the deputy sheriffs had to prevent people from breaking in. It was authorized and constructed after the Northridge earthquake damaged the historic Hall of Justice at 210 West Temple Street in Los Angeles. Security at the facility centers on a panoptic design that allows deputies and officers in a central control room to look through secure optical material to see into all areas of the facility.

In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.

Los Angeles County, California
Los Angeles County, officially the County of Los Angeles, with a population of more than nine million people, is the most populous county in the United States. It has 88 incorporated cities and many unincorporated areas and at 4,083 square miles (10,570 km2) it is larger than the combined areas of the states of Rhode Island and Delaware. The county contains more than one quarter of all California residents and is one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the country.
History
Los Angeles County is one of the original counties of California, created at the time of statehood in 1850. The county originally included parts of what are now Kern, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties. As the population increased, sections were split off to organize San Bernardino County in 1853, Kern County in 1866, and Orange County in 1889.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has an area of 4,751 square miles (12,310 km2), of which 4,058 square miles (10,510 km2) is land and 693 square miles (1,790 km2) (15%) is water. Los Angeles County borders 70 miles (110 km) of coast on the Pacific Ocean and encompasses mountain ranges, valleys, forests, islands, lakes, rivers, and desert. The Los Angeles River, Rio Hondo, the San Gabriel River and the Santa Clara River flow in Los Angeles County, while the primary mountain ranges are the Santa Monica Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. The western extent of the Mojave Desert begins in the Antelope Valley, in the northeastern part of the county. Most of the population of Los Angeles County is located in the south and southwest, with major population centers in the Los Angeles Basin, San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley. Other population centers are found in the Santa Clarita Valley, Pomona Valley, Crescenta Valley and Antelope Valley.

But nonviolent offenders often serve much less than 50%. People serving time for shoplifting or DUI, for example, sometimes serve 10% or less of their sentence.

Two downtown Los Angeles jails were placed on lockdown Wednesday and several people were injured after a fight broke out between Latino and African-American inmates, authorities said.
Twin Towers Correctional Facility and the Men’s Central Jail were locked down, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Brandon Longoria said. Help had been requested for a possible riot, Longoria said about 1:15 p.m.
Another deputy later said the riot occurred at the Men’s Central Jail but both facilities — which are across the street from one another — were on lockdown.
Eighty inmates were involved in the fight, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said. The “disturbance” occurred inside a dormitory at about 12:30 p.m. and lasted about 10 minutes, she said.
Four patients were transported from the Men’s Central Jail with injuries that were not life threatening, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The Sheriff’s Department later stated in a news release that the inmates were all treated on scene.
One of the patients was stabbed and three others had superficial wounds, authorities on scene said.
A source inside the jail told KTLA the fight occurred between black and Latino inmates.
Medical captains went inside a ward to triage patients, according to Margaret Stewart of LAFD.
More than a LAFD ambulances could be seen staged outside the Men’s Central Jail, located at 441 Bauchet St. (map), aerial video from Sky5 showed.
About 59 firefighters responded, as well as 13 rescue ambulances and five fire units, Stewart said.
One shirtless man was brought outside and placed in a chair on a green triage mat that had been set up outside an area labeled “ambulance entrance” near inmate transport buses, aerial video showed.

Two downtown Los Angeles jails were placed on lockdown Wednesday and several people were injured after a fight broke out between Latino and African-American inmates, authorities said.
Twin Towers Correctional Facility and the Men’s Central Jail were locked down, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Brandon Longoria said. Help had been requested for a possible riot, Longoria said about 1:15 p.m.
Another deputy later said the riot occurred at the Men’s Central Jail but both facilities — which are across the street from one another — were on lockdown.
Eighty inmates were involved in the fight, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said. The “disturbance” occurred inside a dormitory at about 12:30 p.m. and lasted about 10 minutes, she said.
Four patients were transported from the Men’s Central Jail with injuries that were not life threatening, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The Sheriff’s Department later stated in a news release that the inmates were all treated on scene.
One of the patients was stabbed and three others had superficial wounds, authorities on scene said.
A source inside the jail told KTLA the fight occurred between black and Latino inmates.
Medical captains went inside a ward to triage patients, according to Margaret Stewart of LAFD.
More than a LAFD ambulances could be seen staged outside the Men’s Central Jail, located at 441 Bauchet St. (map), aerial video from Sky5 showed.
About 59 firefighters responded, as well as 13 rescue ambulances and five fire units, Stewart said.
One shirtless man was brought outside and placed in a chair on a green triage mat that had been set up outside an area labeled “ambulance entrance” near inmate transport buses, aerial video showed.
