Dadaab 20 Years On: Shadows of Lives
Dadaab, Kenya, hosts the largest refugee camp in the world. Originally conceived as a temporary solution to shelter refugees of Somalia's civil war, the three neighboring sites that are referred to collectively as one refugee camp are now 20 years old, and have become a permanent home for the majority of people who have sought shelter there. With a new influx of refugees last year due to increased fighting and hunger in Somalia, conditions for people inside and stranded outside the camps deteriorated to a shocking level before obstacles to increasing aid were resolved. While the numbers of deaths and malnutrition levels have dropped since then, living conditions in the camp remain precarious. The safety of those living in the camps and those assisting them have deteriorated dramatically with regular outbreaks of violence and attacks on refugees and aid workers, including the kidnapping of two Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staff. MSF continues to do everything possible to achieve the safe release of Montserrat Serra and Blanca Thiebaut.

Displaced Somalis pour into Dadaab refugee camps
Thousands of Somali refugees fleeing drought in their home country are continuing to pour into the Dadaab refugee camp in neighbouring Kenya. People have lost their homes, their livestock and their livelihoods. Many are preparing to be at Dadaab for a long time to come. Although Somalia is the worst affected by the drought in the Horn of Africa, some 12 million people across the region are also at risk. Nazanine Moshiri reports from Dadaab in North East Kenya.

Has Al Shabaab Infiltrated Dadaab Refugee Camp?
As the Kenya Defence Forces under the AMISOM umbrella continue to make strides in the war against the Al Shabaab militia inside Somalia, some members of the terror gang are orchestrating attacks inside Kenyan territory. Present and former Al Shabaab militants are said to have infiltrated Dadaab refugee camp which is around 100 kilometres from Liboi, on the Kenya - Somalia border, and home to close to half a million people. All the explosions and kidnappings of aid workers as well as the killing of refugee leaders have been linked to the militia. Judy Kosgei brings into a perspective the magnitude of the security problem at the camp, in the first part of "Dadaab: the threat within".

"Dadaab, The Threat Within" Part 2
Now, some of the frequent explosions occurring in refugee camps in Northern Kenya can be traced to terror suspects housed within the camps who enjoy refugee status. This makes it difficult for the government and security agents to apprehend them, because, they are under the protection of the United Nations High Commission for refugees, UNHCR. In the second part of our series "Dadaab, The Threat Within" Judy Kosgei highlights the dilemma of a government caught between a rock and a hard place.

Dadaab
Though the international spotlight has moved on, hundreds of thousands of Somali refugees in the Dadaab camps in northwestern Kenya, the largest refugee camps in the world, continue to struggle amid harsh conditions and pervasive malnutrition, particularly among children. Aid has been too slow in coming, however, and longer-term solutions are nowhere to be found.

First Visit to Dadaab Refugee Camp, Aid to Somalia "The Kenya Crusade #9"
During 2011 the Somali's were fleeing their country, due to famine and war, in record numbers to create the world's largest refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya. World news reporters and celebrities were a common sight in Dadaab in late 2011, but now it seems the world's attention has faded and the cameras have left. However, the 500000 refugees that make this their temporary home still need help in creating a bearable environment and moving on to a sustainable life. One such family, the Salat family, is in desperate need of bettering their life. The refugee camp is not conducive to the handicap that 4 of their family members have. Dahir Salat, a father of 6, made a comfortable living as a small business owner in Kismayu, Somalia before being forced from his home by the terrorist organization al-shabaab 4 years ago. Now he desperately needs help to start a business so that his family can survive until he is able to get relocated to another country. Watch this episode of The Kenya Crusade and see how you can give Dahir and his family hope.
