Greek Dances - Turkish names Greek Turkish Musics
The Ottoman rule of Greek and other lands for many centuries resulted in many cultural sharings and borrowings between Greeks Turks and many other ethnic groups. Here, I selected examples of musics for a variety of regional folk dances where the name of the dance or the title of the specific tune has a Turkish origin. The titles Karagioules from Crete, Selimbeis (Selim Bey) from southern Greece, Osman Pasa and Suleyman Aga from Macedonia refer to actual historical persons from the time of the Ottoman Empire.

Hellas Crete Rethymno old town
www.explorecrete.com The old town of Rethymnon is one of the best-preserved towns of the Renaissance. Lying in the heart of modern Rethymnon, it combines the oriental features of the Turkish period with Renaissance-style Venetian architecture. After the Venetian conquest of Crete (1204), the town of Rethymnon was built according to the rules of Venetian architecture. The original craftsmen were Venetians, but these later were replaced by Cretan murari, Venetian-trained master builders. The layout of Rethymnon is directly linked to the sea, with the main Venetian street, the Ruga Maistra (today's coastal Venizelou Avenue) running parallel to the sea. The opposite is true of Heraklion and Hania, where the town is closed to the sea for reasons of defence and the main street is at right angles to the coast. The private mansions of Rethymnon are not as impressive as those of Venice, mainly for financial reasons. Furthermore, the strong traditions of Cretan architecture could not be overcome, and Renaissance influences are most apparent on building facades. Finally, as opposed to Heraklion and Hania, Greek features are predominant in Rethymnon because most nobles were Greeks, known as "Archondoromeoi" (noble "Romans", that is, inhabitants of the Eastern Roman Empire). turkish house in the old town of RethymnonMany buildings with gothic features were lost in the destruction of the town by Ulu Ali in 1571, while Rethymnon was rebuilt almost in its entirety in the third quarter of ...

ARKADI Crete, Greece
On the Greek island of Crete, 23 kilometres southeast of Rethymnon, on a small plateau at the foot of the Psiloritis Mountains, is the Arkadi Monastery, a building that contains a moving history of the island's struggle for liberty against the Turks. The remote monastery was built in 1587 at the time of the 'Cretan Renaissance' and in 1866, 963 Cretans secured themselves within its walls in protest against the continued Turkish occupation of the island. Fifteen thousand Turkish solders assailed the monastery and an unequal fight began. One of the monastery's brave defender's set a fuse to the monastery's ammunition store, which resulted in a massive explosion killing both attackers and defenders alike. Although the Arkadi Monastery doesn't contain any spectacular works of art, it possesses its own unique atmosphere and one that recalls a courageous struggle for the liberty of Crete.

Zülfü Livaneli - Geceleyin; ve öncesinde Zülfü'den bir anı
Lyrics by Ulku Tamer, music by Zulfu. At the beginning of the video Zulfu recollects a program of the German ZDF in 1982, based on a concert he gave in Crete. The old cretan villager says in his raw and frank way: "The Turks? They are very good men. And they sing the Turku very beautifully. You wouldn't understand that." Video captured from the Turkish TV in the mid 80ies.

Michalis Tzouganakis ~ Cretan Music
Michalis Tzouganakis performing a series of "syrtos" tunes while singing "mantinades". Video from the show "Stin Ygeia Mas", which was aired on 19th of November 2005 on NET channel (Greece).. Official website: www.tzouganakis.eu Facebook: tzouganakis.hyves.nl Michalis Tzouganakis has been born on July 31, 1969, in Beringen, Belgium. His parents came from Crete, region Sfakia, and together with his brothers and sisters they returned to Crete when Michalis was about nine years old. He started to play the lute when he was about two and a half years old. When he is thirteen he meets the famous lute master Leonidas Klados, who is from that time on his Lute teacher. Copy from: www.youtube.com Cretan music: The earliest documented music on Crete comes from Ancient Greece. Cretan music like most traditional Greek began as product of ancient, Byzantine, western and eastern inspirations. The main instrument lyra, is closely related to the bowed Byzantine lyra. The Persian geographer Ibn Khordadbeh (d. 911) of the 9th Century, in his lexicographical discussion of instruments, cited the Byzantine lyra (Greek: λύρα - lūrā), as similar to the Arabic rebab and a typical Byzantine instrument along with the urghun (organ), shilyani (probably a type of harp or lyre) and the salandj. Bowed instruments descendants of the Byzantine bowed lyra (lūrā) have continued to be played in post-Byzantine regions until the present day with few changes, for example the Calabrian Lira in Italy, the Cretan ...

Ada Sahillerinde/ Matia Mou / Halepianos Manes Greek Turkish songs
A well known tune in Turkey and also known in Greece and in Syria - supposedly originally from Aleppo. This Turkish version is recorded by the Bursa born Greek, Achilleas Poulos in the US; while the Istanbul Greek Andonis Dalgas and the Izmir born Yiorghos Vidalis perform among the earliest Greek versions. The tune become very popular on Crete, originally associated with a type of urban song centered on the town of Rethymnon, whose most important practitioner was Stelios Foustaleris

Anopolis Sfakia Daskalogiannis
Daskalogiannis("Giannis The Teacher"), was one of the many leaders in the Cretan aspect of the rebellion. He was born in Anopoli, the village on the hill top above Chora Sfakion. At the end of the Turkish occupation (1669 - 1898) in 1770 the Turks had offered a settlement to the Cretans where there would be no more deaths. Daskalo Gianni, knowing full well he was walking into a trap, went to meet the Turkish leaders. He hoped that something could be resolved, or at the very least, his death could provide a pivotal point of inspiration for the liberation of Crete. Needless to say, the Turks brutally tortured him and beat him in an attempt to extract strategic information from him. Even after they skinned him alive, he would still not betray his people to the barbaric enemy. He died of his injuries quickly. These were followed by riots which led to the declaration of Crete as an independent Cretan State in 1898. creteisland.gr Georgios Bikakis The Greek Hero
During the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, in July 1974, Cretan Commando Georgios Bikakis with his fellow countryman & pair Bikhanakis (in the field, the special forces detachments or teams, break down into pairs of specialists in weapons), were ordered to defend the area nearest to a hill called Anonymous against an overwhelming Turkish force in the outskirts of Nicosia. Bikakis' only weapon was a M-67 90mm Recoiless Rifle with 8 rounds . The constant bombardment of mortar shelling (4.2" mortars) by the Turks was so defeaning, the bursts of shellfire all around them was so intense, that the two friends were lost. In fact, Bikhanakis believed his friend dead, he left his post & returned to his outfit, where he reported Bikakis as MIA. Bikakis on the other hand, although left alone, returned to his post & engaged the Turks. He spoted 6 Turkish Μ-48Α2 approaching slowly but steadily. He knocks out the first tank at a range of 300 metres/328 yards and the second at 270m/295 yards. He kept engaging the tanks & he destroyed the last one at the astonishing range of 750m/765 yards!!! The last 2 rounds he fired at a building where the infantry had taken cover and set it on fire. He also depleted about 1000 rounds from an abandoned .30 caliber MG. When all ammo was gone he pulled back and the other day managed to rejoin his outfit. He literally stoped a whole turkish battalion supported by a tank platoon alone . His CO nominated him for the gold medal for valor/chrysoun aristeion ...

Kanarini Mou Gliko / Bulbulum Greek Turkish shared Song
Among the most well known tunes among Greeks is "Kanarini Mou Ghliko". The first Greek version was sung by Roza Eskenazi who later recorded the original Turkish version. Both are included on my previous upload "Roza Eskenazi sings Turkish (& Greek)". Originally played as a tsifteteli it is nowadays more often played as a Syrto. Here we have versions by Thomas Korovinis, Dilek Koc, ,Mata Hari, Yorgo Vapuridis (an Istanbul Rum), as well as "folk" versions from Macedonia, Messolongi and Crete.
