ABB Develops Hybrid HVDC Device; Wind Energy Assoc Asks for Phase Out of Tax Break- Energy Min
ABB, a Swiss-based power technology and automation company, has developed a new device that may prove critical to the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The hybrid HVDC—for high voltage direct current—breaker makes it possible to use updated direct current in large power grids without the breakdown problems that hampered the technology in the past. DC can transmit current over very long distances with less loss of power than alternating current, making it ideal for conveying the full electrical output of wind farms and solar generating stations to distant cities. The American Wind Energy Association, whose members include GE and the US unit of Siemens, has asked Congress to phase out the production tax break over the next six years, a time frame it said was long enough to cut costs but short enough to ease fears the credit will become a permanent part of the tax code. The break, scheduled to expire this month, cuts one-third of the costs to generate wind power. Industry advocates contend its loss could cost thousands of jobs. The Washington-based trade group said the credit's continued availability for a reasonable period of time will allow the investment in the cost-saving technologies required to establish the industry. ABB SafeWind
SafeWind, ABB's tailor-made switchgear for wind turbines, is the slimmest medium-voltage switchgear on the market and small enough to fit through the narrow doorway of the turbine tower. Designed specifically to meet the switchgear requirements of wind turbine manufacturers for compactness, safety and flexibility, SafeWind is a complete range of secondary distribution gas-insulated switchgear for onshore and offshore applications in the global wind power market.

ABB Robotics - Grinding Forged Steel Parts
Donhad Pty. Ltd of Perth manufacture fastenings, mainly for mining and oil & gas industries. They were experiencing major problem with incidents, near misses & hazards in their manual grinding operations. So they asked systems integrator Robotics Solutions WA to look at an automated alternative. The newly installed system, featuring an ABB IRB 6660 Industrial Robot with Force Control & Foundry Protection, has eliminated all problems and resulted in a safe, zero incident, environment.

ABB Robotics - Where it all began !!
In 1973 Leif Jonsson of Magnussons, from Genarp in Sweden, was visiting an industrial fair in Stockholm where ASEA (now ABB) were showing an early prototype of the world's first all electric robot. He immediately understood the potential and realised this was something he could use in his pipe bend manufacturing business. And so in early 1974 he took delivery of the very first production unit, and by 1976 he had a further four robots hard at work. And today those same four robots are still hard at work polishing pipe bends - after an unbelievable 36 years. Mats Jonsson from Magnussons comments on their longevity "During the last 4 to 5 years we have had only 3 stoppages. The robots just keep going -- they take care of themselves"

ABB Robotics - Machine Tending & Assembly
ABB are always happy to practice what they preach. In this movie a IRB 1600 industrial robot assembles light switches in the ABB Elektro-Praga facility in Jablonec in the Czech Republic. The robot extracts 4 molded light switch covers from an injection molding machine. The covers are then placed on a cooling station. During the molding cycle (29 secs) the robot undertakes a secondary task - to assemble the cool light switch covers to their base. Those bases are fed through a bowlfeeder on an indexing conveyor which stops in front of the robot to enable the assembly. Once assembled, the light switches move to a flow wrapper and end up packed in a container ready for shipment.

ABB Robotics - Packaging Assembly
Vivabox is one of packaging producer BDMO's largest product lines at its factory in Meulebeke, a town in the Flanders, Belgium. When they needed a solution to their automated packaging assembly needs BDMO requested offers from ABB System Integrator Viscon. Viscon's winning offer proposed a 'pick-and-place' system that could handle 1200 trays an hour. A tight fit problem was resolved by using the 6-axis functionality of ABB's IRB 120 robot; it inserts the tray at an angle before pushing it firmly down to the base and onto spots of glue. The resulting solution now runs 16 hours a day in two shifts. Needless to say, the cost savings have been significant. Looking ahead, BDMO will use robots to automate other production processes; for example, inserting one finished box inside another in order to reduce shipping costs.

ABB Robotics - Fanta Can Challenge- Level II - Superior Motion Control
Superior motion control is the hallmark of all ABB industrial robots. In the first FANTA Can Challenge we set a test that none of our competitors could come close to. Now with the Level II challenge we have "raised the bar another notch" by introducing a THIRD robot & tightening the tolerances. The gap between the cans & pin is now only 1mm. And as always with ABB robots "What you program is what you get - AT ANY SPEED".
