Virgil: The Aeneid
Publius Vergilius Maro (October 15, 70 BC -- September 21, 19 BC), usually called Virgil or Vergil (/ˈvɜrdʒəl/) in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. He is known for three major works of Latin literature, the Eclogues (or Bucolics), the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. A number of minor poems, collected in the Appendix Vergiliana, are sometimes attributed to him. Virgil is traditionally ranked as one of Rome's greatest poets. His Aeneid has been considered the national epic of ancient Rome from the time of its composition to the present day. Modeled after Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, the Aeneid follows the Trojan refugee Aeneas as he struggles to fulfill his destiny and arrive on the shores of Italy—in Roman mythology the founding act of Rome. Virgil's work has had wide and deep influence on Western literature, most notably the Divine Comedy of Dante, in which Virgil appears as Dante's guide through hell and purgatory. The Aeneid (/əˈniːɪd/; Latin: Aeneis [ajˈneːis]—the title is Greek in form: genitive case Aeneidos) is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It is composed of roughly 10000 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under ...

The Divine Comedy - Purgatorio
Early in the spring of 1300, Dante is lost and alone in a dark, foreboding forest. To survive this ordeal, he must visit the three realms of the afterlife. After their travels in Hell along with his guide the Roman poet, Virgil, they ascend in the undergloom to the Mountain of Purgatory... Part two features Dante's second voyage along with the Roman poet Virgil in one of the three canticas - their ascension to Purgatorio (Purgatory). This is part two slideshow storytelling I made on a summarized work of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. No one asked me to do this, this is simply out of my own enjoyment and free time. Baby Names - Virgil: Names for Boys
Virgil is a name with strong historical significance. It hasn't been very popular since the early 1900s, but that doesn't mean it's not ready for a comeback. And honestly, what baby boy wouldn't want to share a name with a microbrewed root beer company AND an ancient Roman poet? Root beer is delicious! What does Virgil mean? Where did the name Virgil originate? Who are some famous people named Virgil? What are some nicknames for Virgil? Subscribe: www.youtube.com Baby Names is the first online video library Baby Book. Baby Names discusses the origins, meanings, and alternative spellings of common and unique baby names for girls and boys. TRANSCRIPT: [Intro] (Male Host) Almost all of the popularity surrounding the name Virgil seems to come from two historical figures. (Female Host) The first is Roman poet Vergilious Maro who gave us The Aeneid, the classic epic. (Male Host) The other is St. Virgilius of Salsburg, an 8th century monk who evangelized Carinthia and later became the Archbishop of Salsburg, of which he gets his name. (Female Host) Virgil has not been a popular boys name since the early 1900s, although it is said that classic names resurge into popular culture from time to time. (Male Host) I personally feel it's cool to have a less popular name. Makes one unique and interesting. (Female Host) Virgil Exner Jr. was responsibe for the design of those awesome cars you remember from the 1950s and 60s with the big fins. They were called forward look cars. (Male Host ...

In order to do so, Dante must travel through the three realms of the afterlife, Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Ovation TV | Dante's Inferno
Melding the seemingly disparate traditions of apocalyptic live-action graphic novel and charming Victoria-era toy theater, Dante's Inferno is a subversive, darkly satirical update of the original 14th century literary classic. Retold with the use of intricately hand-drawn paper puppets and miniature sets, and without the use of CGI effects, this unusual travelogue takes viewers on a tour of hell. And what we find there, looks a lot like the modern world. Sporting a hoodie and a hang-over from the previous night's debauchery, Dante (voiced by Dermot Mulroney) wakes to find he is lost - physically and metaphorically - in a strange part of town. He asks the first guy he sees for some help: The ancient Roman poet Virgil (voiced by James Cromwell), wearing a mullet and what looks like a brown bathrobe. Having no one else to turn to, Dante's quickly convinced that his only means for survival is to follow Virgil voyage down, down through the depths of Hell. The pair cross into the underworld and there Virgil shows Dante the underbelly of the Inferno, which closely resembles the decayed landscape of modern urban life. Dante and Virgil's chronicles are set against a familiar backdrop of used car lots, strip malls, gated communities, airport security checks, and the US Capitol. Here, hot tubs simmer with sinners, and the river Styx is engorged with sewage swimmers. Also familiar is the contemporary cast of presidents, politicians, popes and pop-culture icons sentenced to eternal ...

Vangelis 12 o clock (acherontas river)
In ancient Greek mythology, Acheron was known as the river of pain, and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. In the Homeric poems the Acheron was described as a river of Hades, into which Cocytus and Phlegethon both flowed. The Roman poet Virgil called it the principal river of Tartarus, from which the Styx and Cocytus both sprang. The newly-dead would be ferried across the Acheron by Charon in order to enter the Underworld. The Suda describes the river as "a place of healing, not a place of punishment, cleansing and purging the sins of humans. According to later traditions, Acheron had been a son of Helios and either Gaia or Demeter, who had been turned into the Underworld river bearing his name after he refreshed the Titans with drink during their contest with Zeus. By this myth, Acheron is also the father of Ascalaphus by either Orphne[6] or Gorgyra. The river called Acheron with the nearby ruins of the Necromanteion is found near Parga on the mainland opposite Corfu. Another branch of Acheron was believed to surface at the Acherusian cape (now Eregli in Turkey) and was seen by the Argonauts according to Apollonius of Rhodes. Greeks who settled in Italy identified the Acherusian lake into which Acheron flowed with Lake Avernus. Plato in his Phaedo identified Acheron as the second greatest river in the world, excelled only by Oceanus. He claimed that Acheron flowed in the opposite direction from Oceanus beneath the earth under desert places. The word is ...

Dante's Inferno - Anthony Esolen, Ph.D. (Introduction)
www.CatholicCourses.com Dante's Inferno - A Study on Part I of The Divine Comedy catholiccourses.benedictpress.com Dante's Divine Comedy can rightly be called the greatest poem ever written, praised through the ages by a pantheon of writers and scholars. Romantic poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850) referred to Dante's crowned "visionary brow." Irish novelist James Joyce (1882-1941) said "Dante is my spiritual food!" Pope Benedict XV (1854-1922) called Dante "the most eloquent singer of the Christian idea." Even the 20th century literary critic TS Eliot (1888-1965) famously wrote that "Shakespeare and Dante divide the world between them, there is no third." Yet today this great poem is often dismissed by modern scholars for its unabashed Catholic theology and deep spiritual vision. Shrug off these skeptical scholars disdain and discover for yourself the true grandeur, Christian nature, and sheer artistry of Dante's Divine Comedy. Just as Dante needed Virgil to lead him through the bowels of Hell, you also need a true and trustworthy guide. Dr. Anthony Esolen serves as your Virgil in this course on the Inferno, the first canticle of the Divine Comedy. An expert who has taught Dante to college students for more than twenty years, Professor Esolen is also the preeminent modern translator of the entire Divine Comedy from the original Italian. With Professor Esolen you will enter the terrible gates of Hell and progress level by infernal level to its diabolical depths. Professor ...
