Joan Sutherland, Marilyn Horne and Luciano Pavarotti in Recital (23 March 1981)
Live from Lincoln Center - The Concert of the Century Great duets, trios and arias from Ernani, Norma, La Gioconda, I Masnadieri, Il Trovatore, Otello, La Boheme, La donna del Lago and Beatrice di Tenda. Includes interval documentary: "How to Sing Bel Canto" Review from the New York Times: These three voices must surely be numbered among the best to be heard in the operatic world today. The singers themselves are well aware of that fact, and such knowledge only served to inspire healthy vocal competition and to provide the impetus to give of their very best. Having sung together many times over the years, they also are sensitized to one another's strengths and weaknesses, which means that the ensembles in particular had a special buoyant lift and galvanizing electricity. In its essentials, the concert could be heard as an old-fashioned glorification of the human voice...these three singers did after all give us the concert of the century.

Dame Joan Sutherland - A Tribute Video: How Audiences Loved Her
Many of today's current YouTube viewers are learning about the singers of the past in a vicarious way through videos. These, of course, can help to convey what a singer sounded like and looked like, as well as how they interpreted the works they sang. However, to really understand the phenomenon that was Joan Sutherland "you had to be there" as the saying goes. The audience reaction says it all in this selection of excerpts. I had the privilege of hearing Joan on a number of occasions in Melbourne, Sydney and London. She had an amazing presence on stage which, unfortunately, often made her colleagues seem much less interesting than she herself. And then there was the voice that filled the theatre with an incredibly ambient sound, and then almost shattered it when she reached into the stratosphere. No wonder the ovations were so regularly like those in this video!

Joan Sutherland - Lucia Mad Scene (1962)
In the early 1960s, the Australian soprano Joan Sutherland emerged as an opera star of the first magnitude, setting new standards of vocal excellence in the bel canto repertoire that have yet to be matched. Fortunately, Miss Sutherland's American career included numerous television appearances. The earliest of these telecasts marked Miss Sutherland's American television debut, less than a month after her New York debut (in a concertperformance of Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda) and well before her Metropolitan Opera debut (as Lucia, on November 26, 1961). Here Dame Joan sings the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor.

Joan Sutherland & Huguette Tourangeau - Lakme - Flower Duet (1976)
The luscious Flower Duet (Viens, Mallika) from Léo Delibes' Lakme - sung ravishingly by Joan Sutherland and Huguette Tourangeau. The piece has been used in many movies and TV programs to great effect - lush, lyrical and exotic. Of Dame Joan's performance one reviewer wrote: "The superlatives are extended when describing Sutherland's performance; a great talent at its height, enthralling by the sheer beauty of that stupendous voice." - The Sydney Sun

Dame Joan Sutherland's Final Farewell 1990
Dame Joan's farewell at ROH Covent Garden with Pavarotti and Horne some 20 years ago. It's impossible to believe the world lost this exceptional artist and woman a year ago today. Rest in peace La Stupenda, aka the Voice of the Century (or in my opinion, the greatest voice of all time)!!!!

HandMade - Joan Baxter
HandMade is a wearable recording device that captures what one does with their hands from a first-person perspective. Recordings made with HandMade allow audience members to immerse themselves more deeply into the shoes of artists or craft-makers than is possible in typical TV documentaries or other archival formats. Recordings can also be keepsakes, allowing users to capture ordinary moments or special techniques together with stories that can be shared with family and friends in the far future.
This is a HandMade record of woven tapestry artist Joan Baxter working in her studio near Brora in the Scottish Highlands. Distance Lab made many recordings with artists from Visual Arts Sutherland: vasu.org.uk
WEAR HEADPHONES! The audio is recorded binaurally - in other words, special microphones were worn in the ears of the participant to capture exactly what they were hearing. If you wear headphones and turn up the volume, you will feel more immersed into the scene.
HandMade is a project from Distance Lab, a research lab for digital media and technology in Scotland. We are interested in working with cultural organisations and archives to create unique recordings of endangered skills and techniques.

Joan Sutherland - Maria Stuarda - Oh Nube! Nella Pace Del Mesto Riposo (London, 1975)
Christmas Eve 1974 was a nightmare for the inhabitants of Darwin (in Australia's Northern Territory) when it was destroyed by a violent cyclone. A Darwin Appeal Fund was launched and a month later, on 25 January 1975, Richard Bonynge conducted a fund-raising concert at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The idea was Dame Joan's who participated together with a cast of Australian, New Zealand and British operatic luminaries. In this aria from Maria Stuarda, Joan brings the house down!
