Bangkok is the capital, largest urban area and primary city of Thailand. Known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (, pronounced ), or กรุงเทพฯ Krung Thep (, meaning "city of angels" for short, it was a small trading post at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It came to the forefront of Siam when it was given the status as the capital city in 1768 after the burning of Ayutthaya. However, the current Rattanakosin Kingdom did not begin until 1782 when the capital was moved across the river by Rama I after the death of King Taksin. The Rattanakosin capital is now more formally called "Phra Nakhon" (), pertaining to the ancient boundaries in the metropolis' core and the name Bangkok now incorporates the urban build-up since the 18th century which has its own public administration and governor.

The Kingdom of Laos was a sovereign state from 1953 until December 1975, when communists overthrew the government and created the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Given self-rule in 1949 as part of a federation with the rest of French Indochina, the 1953 Franco-Lao Treaty finally established a sovereign, independent Laos, but did not stipulate who would rule the country. In the years that followed, three groups contended for power: the neutralists under Prince Souvanna Phouma, the right-wing party under Prince Boun Oum of Champassak, and the left-wing, Vietnamese-backed Lao Patriotic Front (now called the Pathet Lao) under Prince Souphanouvong and future Prime Minister Kaysone Phomvihane.

This involved a boat ride, two hour drive, flight to Bangkok, overnight stay, and two more flights to Pakse...seems unnecessarily complicated given that it really wasn't that far away! Fortunately I survived traveling through my nemesis, the Bangkok airport, without incident this time. I absolutely loved Pakse. First of all, I stayed in an old palace built by some French prince when they occupied Laos. It was gorgeous and fancy and absurdly expensive by Laos standards, but fortunately this was still absurdly cheap by US standards. Second, not a single person bothered me, except for a couple of monks who wanted to practice their English. Third, this is only the second country I've been where beer (good ones) are consistently less than $1. Oh, and it's beautiful and everyone is super nice and I just love it. I stayed in Pakse for four days, although this is an action packed entry because I did day trips most days. The first day I toured around a region called the Bolevan Plateau. It's known for huge pretty waterfalls, coffee, and traditional Laos villages/farms. It was beautiful...I'm including way <b>...</b>

Pakxe or Pakse (French Paksé; Laotian ປາກເຊ "Mouth of the river Se") is a city of 70,000 in southern Laos, situated at the confluence of the Xedone and Mekong Rivers. It is the largest city in Champasak province and its capital. It is served by Pakse International Airport and is the gateway to the Bolaven Plateau. It was also the former capital of the Lao Kingdom of Champasak.
History
This city was founded by the French as an administrative outpost in 1905, and was formerly the capital of the Lao Kingdom of Champasak and residence of the King of Champasak at Champasak Palace, which was abolished in 1946 when the Kingdom of Laos was formed. Since the construction of a bridge over the Mekong (built with Japanese aid), allowing road traffic with Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand, Pakse has become the commercial centre of southern Laos. The Pakse airport finished construction on November 2, 2009, resuming flights to Vientiane, Siem Reap and Bangkok.The city has the Champasak Provincial Museum.
