The television show is MICKEY SPILLANE'S MIKE HAMMER (1984-1987). This video rips the guts out of Season Two and gnaws on some girlie bones. Actor Stacy Keach smoothed with suavity the roughest edges of the "Mike Hammer" character depicted by writer Spillane in several novels. Still he remained true to the character's essential toughness, stature, and rugged appeal. Let me set the record straight: Hammer's so-called misogyny is more myth than fact. Hammer loved (honest) women. And he adored Velda, his smart, voluptuous secretary. A hallmark of the 80s television series was the sexy innuendo—reminiscent of the James Bond films—batted back and forth in dialogue between Hammer and a legion of luscious ladies. Season Two featured, among others: some major beauty pageant winners, Rhonda Shear, Janine Turner, and Playboy Playmates of the Year Marianne Gravatte (1983) and Barbara Edwards (1984). The roll call for Season One is equally distinguished: Tracy Scoggins, Sharon Stone, Ava Cadell, Stepfanie Kramer, and Playboy Playmates of the Year Shannon Tweed (1982) and Kathy Shower (1986). Finally, Season Three included Heather Thomas, Vanity, Genie Francis, Jenilee Harrison, Lynn Whitfield, and Joan Severance. Preparing to interview Max Allan Collins, I got to thinking of Michael Avallone. Collins became a next generation Mickey Spillane, creating memorable titles and characters of his own such as Road to Perdition and Mike Quarry. He's worked in all kind of media, from scripting Dick Tracy daily comic strips from 1977-93 to writing the novelizations of movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Air Force One and American Gangster and creating his own one-man show, "Eliot Ness: An Untouchable Life." The crowning achievement of his career, however, may have been when Mickey Spillane—the best selling mystery writer of the 20th century--chose Collins to be his literary executor. Spillane passed away in 2006 and Collins has since lit a fire in new stories of private dick Mike Hammer. His latest is Lady, Go Die!, the riveting sequel to Spillane's classic, I, The Jury. What's the connection in my mind between Max Allan Collins and my late friend Michael Avallone? Not much, really. Same business, different levels of success—and execution. As time went by my brother was very close to Ronnie and Reggie Kray.
Ronnie Knight:
Every night I used to go out with Ronnie and Reggie.
IN 1958, RONNIE KNIGHT DROVE THE GETAWAY CAR WHEN THE KRAY TWINS BEAT UP RIVALS.
Ronnie Knight:
So when Ronnie and them got out, they was koshed up with hammers choppers and everything you could think of and they smashed the door right in. Just walked in and says who wants trouble now, we're the Kray twins. Who wants it?
BUT PRIOR TO MEETING THE KRAYS, RONNIE HAD RECRUITED HIS YOUNGER BROTHER AS HIS PARTNER IN CRIME.
John Knight:
My first crime I ever did was when my brother Ron come to me and asked me to get in a small fan light over a top of a door and take the cash drawer till out and pass it out of the fanlight.
Ronnie Knight:
I was too big for that so I thought the only person who could do that was my Johnnie 'cos he was a lot younger'n me and lot smaller'n me. He come out with a prize.

I took to crime because I used to see the old villains very smart looking, dressed, and everyone was ducking and diving about, there was loads of rascals, so perhaps I'd join the band robbers.

ALTHOUGH TWO YEARS YOUNGER THAN RONNIE, JOHN KNIGHT SOON SURPASSED HIM IN ORGANISING CRIME.
John Knight:
By the time I was twenty, I was doing a lot of things. Looking for lorry loads, taking and driving away lorry loads. I could always ask Ronnie for a helping hand if he wanted to earn some extra money.
Ronnie Knight:
We trusted one another and I would never leave him and he would never leave me.

Kaituna Whitewater Sessions
In 2011 Mike Dawson(NZ) was selected to represent New Zealand in the London Olympics for Slalom kayaking. In this project he has teamed up with Czech national Vavrinec Hradilek in his pre olympic selection training in a quest to prepare for the games and progress the sport of slalom kayaking beyond the imaginations of the bravest slalom racers. Whitewater Sessions on the Kaituna was a project designed by the pair to showcase slalom kayaking to the world in a different light and also help them on thier quest for gold at the London Olympics. This section of whitewater is commercially rafted at restricted flows of between 200 and 500 on the gauge but they set out to race down it in composite (carbon, fiberglass) kayaks 3 times the maximum commercial rafting level known to the locals as "Open Gates". One obstacle at the end of the race course is called Trout Pool Falls, a rapid outside the scope for commercial rafting at any flow and seldom run at this flow even by the best whitewater kayakers in plastic kayaks designed for this sort of whitewater. These two stepped up and ran the falls at the end of the mentally and physically draining course. A big thanks go out to RedBull CZ for making this project happen as well as all the people involved in set up, camera operation and safety.

So when Ronnie and them got out, they was koshed up with hammers choppers and everything you could think of and they smashed the door right in. Just walked in and says who wants trouble now, we're the Kray twins. Who wants it?
BUT PRIOR TO MEETING THE KRAYS, RONNIE HAD RECRUITED HIS YOUNGER BROTHER AS HIS PARTNER IN CRIME.
John Knight:
My first crime I ever did was when my brother Ron come to me and asked me to get in a small fan light over a top of a door and take the cash drawer till out and pass it out of the fanlight.
Ronnie Knight:
I was too big for that so I thought the only person who could do that was my Johnnie 'cos he was a lot younger'n me and lot smaller'n me. He come out with a prize.

I took to crime because I used to see the old villains very smart looking, dressed, and everyone was ducking and diving about, there was loads of rascals, so perhaps I'd join the band robbers.

Kaituna Whitewater Sessions
In 2011 Mike Dawson(NZ) was selected to represent New Zealand in the London Olympics for Slalom kayaking. In this project he has teamed up with Czech national Vavrinec Hradilek in his pre olympic selection training in a quest to prepare for the games and progress the sport of slalom kayaking beyond the imaginations of the bravest slalom racers. Whitewater Sessions on the Kaituna was a project designed by the pair to showcase slalom kayaking to the world in a different light and also help them on thier quest for gold at the London Olympics. This section of whitewater is commercially rafted at restricted flows of between 200 and 500 on the gauge but they set out to race down it in composite (carbon, fiberglass) kayaks 3 times the maximum commercial rafting level known to the locals as "Open Gates". One obstacle at the end of the race course is called Trout Pool Falls, a rapid outside the scope for commercial rafting at any flow and seldom run at this flow even by the best whitewater kayakers in plastic kayaks designed for this sort of whitewater. These two stepped up and ran the falls at the end of the mentally and physically draining course. A big thanks go out to RedBull CZ for making this project happen as well as all the people involved in set up, camera operation and safety.

Michael "Mike" Hammer is a fictional character created by the American author Mickey Spillane in the 1947 book I, the Jury (made into a movie in 1953 and 1982).

Several movies and radio and television series have been based on the books in the Hammer series. The actor most closely identified with the character in recent years has been Stacy Keach, who portrayed Hammer in a CBS television series, Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, which ran from 1984–1987 and had a syndicated revival in 1997–1998. (An earlier syndicated version, originally aired in 1957–1958, starred Darren McGavin as Hammer.) Spillane himself played Hammer in a 1963 motion picture adaptation of The Girl Hunters. Spillane himself favoured ex-Marine and former Newburgh, New York police officer Jack Stang, on whom he based the character, to play him. Stang appeared with Spillane in the 1954 film Ring of Fear and in the film adaptation of I, the Jury.

Prior to World War II, Mickey Spillane was a writer of many well known comic books. After World War II he used what would be the plot of I, the Jury for a comic book character called Mike Danger. When converting the comic book to a novel originally in hardcover, Spillane wrote the work in nine days in some accounts, nineteen in other accounts.[1]

While pulp detectives such as Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe are hard-boiled and cynical, Hammer is in many ways the archetypal "hard man": brutally violent, and fuelled by a genuine rage against violent crime that never afflicts Raymond Chandler's or Dashiell Hammett's heroes. In The Big Kill Hammer describes himself to a bargirl as a misanthrope.
While other hardboiled heroes bend and manipulate the law, Hammer often views it as an impediment to justice, the one virtue he holds in absolute esteem. Hammer nevertheless has a strong respect for the majority of police, realizing they have a difficult job and their hands are frequently tied by the law when trying to stop criminals.
Mike Hammer is a no-holds barred private investigator who carries a .45 Colt M1911 in a shoulder harness under his left arm. His love for his secretary Velda is only outweighed by his willingness to kill a killer. Hammer's best friend is Pat Chambers, Captain of Homicide NYPD. Hammer was a veteran of the Battle of Guadalcanal, possibly a former US Marine.[2][3]
Hammer is also patriotic and anti-communist. The novels are peppered with remarks by Hammer supporting American troops in Korea, and in Survival...Zero Vietnam. In One Lonely Night, where Hammer attends a communist meeting in a park, his reaction to the speaker's propaganda is a sarcastic "Yeah."
So far as violence is concerned, the Hammer novels leave little to the imagination. Written in the first person, Hammer describes his violent encounters with relish. In all but a few novels, Hammer's victims are often left vomiting after a blow to the stomach or groin.
The Washington Times obituary of Spillane said of Hammer, "In a manner similar to Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry, Hammer was a cynical loner contemptuous of the 'tedious process' of the legal system, choosing instead to enforce the law on his own terms."[4]

Radio Series - A December 1952 to October 1954 Mutual Broadcasting System radio series titled That Hammer Guy starred Larry Haines then George Petrie and Ted DeCorsia as Mike Hammer and Jan Miner as Hammer's secretary Velda and the voice of other female characters on the show. It was written by Ed Adamson and was directed by Richard Lewis.[5]
Audiobooks - An array of Spillane's novels have been produced as audiobooks. Several of these are performed by Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer veteran Stacy Keach. Examples include Black Alley (Penguin Audio, 1996), The Big Kill (Simon & Schuster, 2010) and The Killing Man (Simon & Schuster, 2010).
Blackstone Audio Productions - In 2008, Stacy Keach reprised the role of Mike Hammer in the first of a series of radio-style dramas entitled The New Adventures of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. Keach refers to the production style, that is somewhere between an audiobook and radio drama, as a "radio novel."[6] The Audie-nominated inaugural production features the episodes, Dangerous Days and Oil and Water. Both were written exclusively for audio by M. J. Elliott and produced with a full cast, music and sound effects in radio drama style by Carl Amari of Falcon Picture Group, who personally selected Elliott to script the Audie Award-nominated dramas. Volume 2 of the series was released in 2009, featuring a 2.5 hour story entitled The Little Death. The story was written exclusively for audio by Max Allan Collins from a story by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins. Volume 3, Encore for Murder, was released in March 2011. All three volumes have been released by Blackstone Audio and star Keach in the title role. Keach also arranges and performs the music featured in the productions[7] and his wife, Malgosia Tomassi, portrays yoga instructor Maya Ricci.

Early life[link]
Bain was born in Chicago as Millicent Fogel, the daughter of immigrants from Russia.[1] She graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in sociology. She moved to New York City, where she was a dancer and high fashion model. Bain studied with Martha Graham, thus cementing her interest in dancing. After attending Lee Strasberg's Actors' Studio, she became an actress.
In 1958, Bain and Larry Hagman guest-starred in the last episode of Harbourmaster. She guest-starred as Nen Slausen in the 1959 episode "Fiddle Dee Dead" of Rod Cameron's syndicated series State Trooper.
February 20, 1960 featured in Perry Mason: Episode 85 (Season 3,Ep 16) "The Case of the Wary Wildcatter". Played "Madelyn Terry" the girlfriend of "Lucky Sterling"....
On December 23, 1960, she guest-starred in a Christmas episode of James Whitmore's legal drama The Law and Mr. Jones on ABC.
On December 30, 1963, Bain appeared with Jack Kelly, long after Maverick in "The Fenton Canaby Story" on ABC's Wagon Train, Season 7. Canaby is a former trailmaster with a dark secret he refuses to discuss. Bain plays Lucy Garrison, a young woman with her own questionable past, long before Mission: Impossible!, who is attracted to Canaby. Virginia Gregg plays Grace Lowe, who blames Canaby for her husband's death.[2]

On CBS's Mission: Impossible, Bain played Cinnamon Carter from 1966 until 1969 and again in one 1997 episode of Dick Van Dyke's Diagnosis: Murder. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Actress in a Television Series for her performance in Mission: Impossible in 1968. She won three consecutive Emmys for Best Dramatic Actress for that series in 1967, 1968, and 1969.[3]
Her then husband, Martin Landau, also starred in Mission: Impossible. The two both left the series in 1969. She starred opposite Landau again in the science fiction television series Space: 1999 (1975–1977), as Dr. Helena Russell. Bain and Landau also performed together on screen in the 1981 made-for-TV film The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island. Bain also appeared in Season 2 of the television series The Dick Van Dyke Show in the episode "Will You Two Be My Wife?". Bain appeared on an episode of My So-Called Life, playing main character Angela Chase's grandmother. She appeared in the episode "Matroyoshka" of Millennium, a late-'90s sci-fi series. In 1998, Bain was a special guest star in the Walker, Texas Ranger episode ("Saving Grace") as Mother Superior. In 2006, Bain had a minor role in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation ("Living Legends"), which featured a suspect, played by Roger Daltrey, who used stretch rubber face masks, similar to those used in the old Mission: Impossible series, to kill his enemies. In 2008, Bain appeared in the episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" of the TV show Ben 10: Alien Force, voicing Verdona Tennyson, the grandmother of Ben Tennyson and Gwen Tennyson, alongside her daughter, Juliet Landau.
Personal life[link]
In 1957, she married actor Martin Landau, with whom she later starred on television. Landau and Bain divorced in 1993. The couple had two daughters, actress Juliet Landau and film producer Susan Bain Landau Finch[4] (née Susan Meredith Landau). Bain is of the Jewish faith.[5]
Barbara Bain has worked to further the cause of many charities, including literacy. When asked about watching daughter Juliet's career evolve, Bain told Attention Deficit Delirium: "I think it's wonderful. She wants it, she's very good at it, so she should do it. She's very gifted. I've seen her in the theater, and we've been on stage together. We did a play in Los Angeles together. It was gorgeous because I was in the wings and could watch her, and she could be in the wings and watch me. I handed her a handkerchief at the end of her big crying scene. I've never been nervous about her because she knows what she's doing, so I'm very calm when I watch her and very excited to see what she's doing. I don’t take pride because it doesn’t seem like anything that I did. It seems more exquisite pleasure, but not pride. I didn't do anything, she did it. In kindergarten she said she wanted to be a singer/dancer/actress. She does sing and did dance. She didn't mess around. She went right after what she was going to do."[6]

Darren McGavin (May 7, 1922 – February 25, 2006) was an American actor best known for playing the title role in the television horror series Kolchak: The Night Stalker and his portrayal in the film A Christmas Story of the grumpy father given to bursts of profanity that he never realizes his son overhears. He appeared as the tough-talking, funny detective in the 1950s television series Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. From 1959-1961, McGavin starred in the NBC western series Riverboat, first with Burt Reynolds and then with Noah Beery, Jr., and in later years, he had a recurring role in the sitcom Murphy Brown, as the title character's father, for which he received an Emmy Award.

McGavin was born William Lyle Richardson in Spokane, Washington,[1] a son of Grace Watson (née Bogart) and Reed Daniel Richardson.[2] He graduated from Puyallup High School.[3]
In magazine interviews in the 1960s, he said his parents divorced when he was very young. His father, not knowing what else to do, put him in an orphanage at the age of 11. McGavin began to run away, sleeping on the docks and in warehouses. He lived in three orphanages. The last was the Dyslin Boys Ranch in Pierce County, Washington, a boys' home, which turned out to be a safe haven. Farm chores were assigned, and he lived with several other boys who had also been abandoned. McGavin commented that the owners of the home helped him develop a sense of pride and responsibility that turned his life around. McGavin did not serve in the military during World War II because he had bad knees, though he did make a training film for the military on venereal disease.

Still untrained as an actor, McGavin worked as a painter in the paint crew at the Columbia Pictures movie studios in 1945. When an opening became available for a bit part in A Song to Remember, on the movie set where he was working, McGavin applied for the role. He was hired for it, and that was his first foray into movie acting. (He had spent a year at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California). Shortly afterwards, he moved to New York City and spent a decade there learning the acting profession in television and plays. McGavin studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Actors Studio under teacher Sanford Meisner and began working in live TV drama and on Broadway. A few of the plays in which he starred included The Rainmaker (where he created the title role on Broadway), The King and I and Death of a Salesman.
McGavin returned to Hollywood and became a busy actor in a wide variety of TV and movie roles; in 1955 he broke through with roles in the films Summertime and The Man with the Golden Arm. During this period, McGavin also appeared on the anthology series Alfred Hitchcock Presents in an episode titled "The Cheney Vase", in which he demonstrated his talent for playing complex roles, as a scheming caretaker and aspiring art thief, opposite Carolyn Jones and Ruta Lee.
Over the course of his career, McGavin starred in seven different TV series and guest-starred in many more; these television roles increased in the late 1950s and early 1960s with leading parts in series such as Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer and Riverboat. McGavin held a black belt in traditional Japanese karate and the series are notable for him doing many of his own stunts and for the "enthusiasm" he put into some of the fight scenes, sometimes forgetting to pull his punches and "ad-libbing" moves, much as Robert Conrad did years later in The Wild, Wild West.
When the comedy team Martin and Lewis broke up as a result of Dean Martin's refusal to play a cop in a movie, McGavin played the role originally earmarked for Martin in The Delicate Delinquent, Jerry Lewis's first solo film.
In 1970, he was in negotiations to replace Larry Hagman as the male lead in the television series I Dream of Jeannie for the sixth season, but NBC stated they would rather cancel the series than have any other similarities to Bewitched, in which the male lead was replaced by another actor.
McGavin was also known for his role as Sam Parkhill in the miniseries adaptation of The Martian Chronicles. He appeared as a fill-in regular in The Name of the Game in an episode entitled "Goodbye Harry" and was featured as a reporter in one of the Gene Barry segments.
The first of his two best-known roles came in 1972, in the supernatural-themed TV movie The Night Stalker (1972). With McGavin playing a reporter who discovers the activities of a modern-day vampire on the loose in Las Vegas, the film became the highest-rated made-for-TV movie in history at that time; and when the sequel The Night Strangler (1973) also was a strong success, a subsequent television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974) was made. In the series, McGavin played Carl Kolchak, an investigative reporter for the INS, a Chicago-based news service, who regularly stumbles upon the supernatural or occult basis for a seemingly mundane crime; although his involvement routinely assisted in the dispelment of the otherworldly adversary, his evidence in the case was always destroyed or seized, usually by a public official or major social figure who sought to cover up the incident. He would write his ensuing stories in a sensational, tabloid style which advised readers that the true story was being withheld from them. McGavin and the cast were enthusiastic about the series. McGavin reportedly entered into a verbal agreement with Sid Sheinberg (President of MCA and Universal TV) to produce The Night Stalker as a TV series as a coproduction between Universal and McGavin's Taurean Productions. Early promises were never fulfilled, and McGavin expressed concern over script quality and lack of network commitment toward promoting the show. His concerns appeared justified, as the series drifted into camp humor and the production values declined in later episodes.[4]
Kolchak is acknowledged[who?] as being a main inspiration forThe X-Files,[citation needed]. McGavin was asked to play the role of Arthur Dales, founder of the X-Files, in three episodes: Season 5's "Travelers" and two episodes from Season 6, "Agua Mala" and "The Unnatural". Failing health forced him to withdraw from the latter, and the script (written and directed by series star David Duchovny) was rewritten to feature M. Emmet Walsh as Dales's brother, also called Arthur.
In 1983, he starred as "Old Man Parker", the narrator's father, in the movie A Christmas Story. He portrayed a middle-class father in 1940s Hammond, Indiana, who was endearing in spite of his being comically oblivious to his own use of profanity and completely unable to recognize his unfortunate taste for kitsch. Blissfully unaware of his family's embarrassment by his behavior, he took pride in his self-assessed ability to fix anything in record time, and carried on a tireless campaign against his neighbor's rampaging bloodhounds. McGavin allegedly received a fee of $2 million to play the role, making him one of the highest paid actors of the time.
McGavin made an uncredited appearance in 1984's The Natural as a shady gambler and appeared on a Christmas episode ("Midnight of the Century") of Millennium, playing the long-estranged father of Frank Black (Lance Henriksen); he also appeared as Adam Sandler's hotel-magnate father in the 1995 movie Billy Madison.
During the filming of The Natural, Robert Redford was so pleased with McGavin's portrayal of his character that they began to expand the role. However, after a certain point, union rules dictated that the actor's contract needed to be renegotiated for salary and billing. After haggling on salary, and holding up production of the movie because of it, the billing had to be decided. McGavin became somewhat fed up with the proceedings and instructed his agent to waive his billing in the credits entirely so they could get back to filming.
He won a CableACE Award (for the 1991 TV movie Clara) and received a 1990 Emmy Award[5] as an Outstanding Guest Star in a Comedy Series on Murphy Brown, in which he played Murphy's father.
There was a brief and unsuccessful remake of the Night Stalker TV series in 2005 starring Stuart Townsend. In the initial episode aired on September 29, 2005, McGavin appeared momentarily in the background, using digitally inserted footage from his role in the original series.
Darren McGavin narrated the majority of the audio book versions of the adventure novels by John D. MacDonald in which each title included a color. The central character and main voice of the novels was Travis McGee.
Personal life[link]
McGavin was married twice. The first was to Melanie York on March 20, 1944. It ended in divorce in 1969, but produced four children: Bogart, York, Megan, and Graemm Bridget McGavin. The second was to Kathie Browne on December 31, 1969, ending with her death in 2003.
McGavin died on February 25, 2006 at the age of 83 in a Los Angeles hospital.[6] He is buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Frank Morrison Spillane (March 9, 1918 – July 17, 2006), better known as Mickey Spillane, was an American author of crime novels, many featuring his signature detective character, Mike Hammer. More than 225 million copies of his books have sold internationally.[1] In 1980, Spillane was responsible for seven of the top 15 all-time best-selling fiction titles in the U.S.

Born in Brooklyn, New York City, and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Spillane was the only child of his Irish bartender father, John Joseph Spillane, and his Scottish mother, Catherine Anne. Spillane attended Erasmus Hall High School, graduating in 1935.[2] He started writing while in high school, briefly attended Fort Hays State College in Kansas and worked a variety of jobs, including summers as a life-guard at Breezy Point, Queens, and a period as a trampoline artist for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
During World War II Spillane enlisted in the Army Air Corps, becoming a fighter pilot and a flight instructor.[3] While flying over Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, he said, "That is where I want to live."[4] Later, he would use his celebrity status to publicize the Grand Strand on TV, but when it became a popular resort area and traffic became a problem, Spillane said, "I shouldn't have told people about it."[4]
He was an active Jehovah's Witness. Mickey and Mary Ann Spillane had four children (Caroline, Kathy, Michael, Ward), and their marriage ended in 1962. In November 1965, he married his second wife, nightclub singer Sherri Malinou. After that marriage ended in divorce (and a lawsuit) in 1983, Spillane shared his waterfront house in Murrells Inlet with his third wife, Jane Rogers Johnson, whom he married in October 1983, and her two daughters (Jennifer and Margaret Johnson).
In the 1960s, Spillane became a friend to the novelist Ayn Rand. Despite their apparent differences, Rand admired Spillane's literary style, and Spillane became, as he described it, a "fan" of Rand's work.[5]
In 1989, Hurricane Hugo ravaged his Murrells Inlet house to such a degree it had to be almost entirely reconstructed. A television interview showed Spillane standing in the ruins of his house. He received an Edgar Allan Poe Grand Master Award in 1995. Spillane's novels went out of print, but in 2001, the New American Library began reissuing them.
Spillane died July 17, 2006 at his home in Murrells Inlet, of pancreatic carcinoma.[6][7][8] After his death, his friend and literary executor, Max Allan Collins, began the task of editing and completing Spillane's unpublished typescripts, beginning with a Mike Hammer novel, The Goliath Bone (2008).
In July 2011, Murrells Inlet named U.S 17 Business the "Mickey Spillane Waterfront 17 Highway." The proposal first passed the Georgetown County Council in 2006 while Spillane was still alive, but the South Carolina General Assembly rejected the plan then.[4]
He is survived by his wife, Jane Spillane, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.

Spillane started as a writer for comic books. While working as a salesman in Gimbels department store basement in 1940, he met tie salesman Joe Gill, who later found a lifetime career in scripting for Charlton Comics. Gill told Spillane to meet his brother, Ray Gill, who wrote for Funnies Inc., an outfit that packaged comic books for different publishers. Spillane soon began writing an eight-page story every day. He concocted adventures for major 1940s comic book characters, including Captain Marvel, Superman, Batman and Captain America. Two-page text stories, which he wrote in the mid-1940s for Timely, appeared under his name and were collected in Primal Spillane (Gryphon Books, 2003).

Spillane joined the United States Army Air Forces on December 8, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the mid-1940s he was stationed as a flight instructor in Greenwood, Mississippi, where he met and married Mary Ann Pearce in 1945. The couple wanted to buy a country house in the Newburgh, New York, 60 miles north of New York City, so Spillane decided to boost his bank account by writing a novel. In 19 days he wrote I, the Jury. At the suggestion of Ray Gill, he sent it to E. P. Dutton.
With the combined total of the 1947 hardcover and the Signet paperback (December 1948), I, the Jury sold six and a half million copies in the United States alone. I, the Jury introduced Spillane's most famous character, hardboiled detective Mike Hammer. Although tame by current standards, his novels featured more sex than competing titles, and the violence was more overt than the usual detective story. An early version of Spillane's Mike Hammer character, called Mike Danger, was submitted in a script for a detective-themed comic book. " 'Mike Hammer originally started out to be a comic book. I was gonna have a Mike Danger comic book,' [Spillane] said in a 1984 interview."[9] Two Mike Danger comic-book stories were published in 1954 without Spillane's knowledge, as well as one featuring Mike Lancer (1942), were published with other material in "Byline: Mickey Spillane," edited by Max Allan Collins and Lynn F. Myers, Jr. (Crippen & Landru publishers, 2004).

Spillane portrayed himself as a detective in Ring of Fear (1954), and rewrote the film without credit for John Wayne's and Robert Fellows' Wayne-Fellows Productions. The film was directed by screenwriter James Edward Grant. Several Hammer novels were made into movies, including Kiss Me Deadly (1955). In The Girl Hunters (1963) filmed in England, Spillane appeared as Hammer, one of the few occasions in film history in which an author of a popular literary hero has portrayed his own character. Spillane was scheduled to film The Snake as a follow up, but the film was never made.[11]
On October 25, 1956, Spillane appeared on The Ford Show, Starring Tennessee Ernie Ford, with interest on his Mike Hammer novels.[12] In 1974, he appeared with Jack Cassidy in the television series Columbo in the episode "Publish or Perish". Spillane portrayed a writer who is murdered.[13]
In 1969, Spillane formed a production company with Robert Fellows who had produced The Girl Hunters to produce many of his books, but Fellows died soon after and only The Delta Factor was produced.[14]
During the 1980s, he appeared in Miller Lite beer commercials.[15] In the 1990s, Spillane licensed one of his characters to Tekno Comix for use in a science-fiction adventure series, Mike Danger. In his introduction to the series, Spillane said he had conceived of the character decades earlier but never used him.[9]
Critical reactions[link]
When literary critics had a negative reaction to Spillane's writing, citing the high content of sex and violence, Spillane answered with a few terse comments: "Those big-shot writers could never dig the fact that there are more salted peanuts consumed than caviar... If the public likes you, you're good." Russian-American author Ayn Rand publicly praised Spillane's work at a time when critics were almost uniformly hostile. She considered him an underrated if uneven stylist and found congenial the black-and-white morality of the Hammer stories. She later publicly repudiated what she regarded as the amorality of Spillane's Tiger Mann stories. German painter Markus Lüpertz claimed that Spillane's writing influenced his own work, saying that Spillane ranks as one of the major poets of the 20th century.

Max Allan Collins (born March 3, 1948) is an American mystery writer. He has written novels, screenplays, comic books, comic strips, trading cards, short stories, movie novelizations and historical fiction. He wrote the graphic novel Road to Perdition (which was developed into a film in 2002), created the comic book private eye Ms. Tree, and took over writing the Dick Tracy comic strip from creator Chester Gould and one of the Batman comic books for a time. He wrote books to expand on the Dark Angel TV series. He has also written books and comics based on the TV series franchise CSI. More recently, he has written a book, Buried Deep, based on the TV series Bones.
He has also written two sequel novels to Road to Perdition: Road to Purgatory and Road to Paradise. He also wrote three more graphic novels starring the characters from Road to Perdition. These graphic novels, called collectively On the Road to Perdition, form the basis of the film.
He also co-founded the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers with Lee Goldberg. The IAMTW is an organization for writers of tie-ins and novelizations.
Collins studied in the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa.
Collins was a fan of the mystery writer Mickey Spillane from childhood and later became friends with him. The two collaborated on a comic book series in the 1990s called Mike Danger. Upon Spillane's death in 2006, Collins was entrusted to finish several uncompleted works by Spillane including Dead Street, The Goliath Bone, and The Big Bang. Several other uncompleted works may be finished by Collins and published in the future.

Nathan Heller series[link]
Collins's longest running series and arguably his best known work is his Nathan Heller series. Heller is a Chicago private investigator who gets involved in famous crimes and meets famous people of the 1930s and 1940s, including Orson Welles, Frank Nitti, and Sally Rand. The first novel in this historical fiction series, True Detective, won the 1984 Shamus Award for Best P.I. Hardcover from the Private Eye Writers of America. Collins won his second Shamus in 1992 for the Heller novel Stolen Away, an account of the Lindbergh kidnapping. His 1999 novel Flying Blind sees Heller investigate the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, along the way becoming romantically involved with her. The most recent book in this series, Chicago Confidential, moved the action into the 1950s. Collins has recently announced that he has completed a new entry in the series, due out in June 2011, about Marilyn Monroe. He has begun research on a Nate Heller novel about the JFK assassination.[1]

Movies and music[link]
In addition to his work as a writer, Collins has also written and directed four movies: Mommy, Mommy 2: Mommy's Day, Real Time: Siege at Lucas Street Market, and Eliot Ness: An Untouchable Life (based on his Edgar Award–nominated play). All four were produced independently on location in Collins' hometown of Muscatine, Iowa. The first three are available on DVD — separately or in the Black Box set — from Troma Team Video, and the Ness film is distributed by VCI Entertainment.
Collins has also written and performed music with his rock band, Crusin'.
