The Matterhorn sept 2009 (Hornli Hut)
The Hornli Hut 3260m - Easily the best high altitude hiking trail in europe. The moment you get off the cable car the altitude hits you. I read somewhere that a bloke wanted to do this with his child on his back in a child carrier and the response was " yes should be fine". WHAT ..THE F**K. This route is extremely exposed, when the path spits you out onto the North Face of the Matterhorn you are walking on ledges which are 6" to 12" wide with the North Face plummiting away to your side. We experienced fantastic weather yet we encountered large amounts of snow and ice on the Nort Face.At one point my right foot slipped and dropped off the ledge. Thankfully the fixed ropes are bolted onto the mountain to help you on these tricky extremely exposed sections. However that slip set the tone for me and every step was tested before putting my full weight on it. The video is unable to show the really exposed sections with the ropes..why? because I aint holding a camera i,m holding a bloody rope. Objective dangers on this route are rockfall and avalanges. on our trip the Hornli Hut was closed due to the recent snowfall. When we descended we heard an avalange which sounded like a jumbo jet crashing. For this trip you need to be pretty fit,its steep and a high level of concentration is required as a slip or fall in places will prove to be fatal. I can't really compare this hike to anything in the uk. The altitude plays a big part, Some times we went really dizzy and had to stop to get our heads together then you try and move off only to find that your legs have been filled with liquid lead.we had Crampons/ice axe and walking poles plus helmets just in case. i only used my ice axe which provided me with some comfort when i could drive the shaft into the snow/ice when the fixed ropes were not available. This was meant to be our training climb ready for the Mettelhorn 3406m the following day. A cracking blister put a stop to that one. You are looking at around 2 to 3 hours to reach the hut from the Schwarzsee cable car which will cost you 47 Ch francs return. PLEASE NOTE. The last cable car back down is 16.30 hrs. If you miss this then its the long long trek back down to Zermatt for you. Don't even think of doing this in anything but good weather. This has the potential to go very wrong and very quickly if the weather rolls in. On the way back to the campsite we came across the climbers cemetery, its a very emotional place with stories of climbers who fell to their deaths.Glad we visited it after and not before our trip. Once at the Hornli Hut you can almost touch the summit yet its still over 3000ft away. We got there just as 2 Climbers from Bejing had summitted along with their 2 guides. I can see why many climbers have a crack at it,it sort of looks do-able a bit like a huge pile of rubble but i certainly think a guide is essential not just for the climbing but "HEH THEY BLOODY LIVE HERE" They know the weather patterns, the rock fall and all the early warning signs that we would not know. The guides in Zermatt are well respected individuals, you just try and get some information on the climb... you aint getting any, the guides don't disclose it because its their livelyhood. On summit day at the hornli hut the early morning bell is rung and the zermatt guides/clients get served their breakfast first before anybody else so they are away and climbing before anyone else... Why?..... Out of respect. Zermatt is car free. you have to park up at the matterhorn terminal in Tasche then get the shuttle to Zermatt which run every 20mins. Its about 7 ch fr return and the car park was about 13 ch fr. As soon as you arrive in zermatt go to the tourist information office immediately to your right. there you will be given a map with all the walking distances on. The campsite is about 500m to your left down the main street. Its extremely basic but does the job. It was a bit of an international scene when we were there with Climbers from all over the world (china, usa, russia and god knows who else). Its all very friendly though 2 American girls cooked spagetti for everyone on the site. Bloody yanks always like to run the show. On a final note... Zermatt is a must visit village, its car free for a reason, but it works and works well, it silent.......... it creates a vibe and an ambience that makes you want to go back for more. Just be aware of the electric taxi's you can't hear them we nearly got splattered several times. Those of you who have been there will know what we mean. Its nowhere near as expensive as we thought. we were paying about £3.40 per pint and about £8-10 for a pizza. Oh do check out Grampi's bar with their live Pianist. The trip to the world famous Hornli Hut is a must "do before you die" trip. Its an amazing place with stacks of history and the view is nothing like i,ve seen before.

Deadly accident on the Matterhorn
Footage from a documentary about Air Zermatt, shot by the Swiss Television "Schweizer Fernsehen". We join the mountain rescue services of Air Zermatt in the Swiss Alps during a rescue of three alpinists on the Matterhorn mountain. Unfortunately the crash turned out to be fatal: the Air Zermatt crew has to recover the death bodies from the glacier.

The Alpine Rescue Center offers courses on a high level that prepares rescuers for the challenging operations under extreme conditions.
Practising Emergency Medical Service in the mountains is extremely challenging. High altitude, extreme temperatures, strong winds, unpredictable weather, weight issues, limited resources and no place for mistakes.
After successfully completing the courses, a rescuer or paramedic might achieve the International Diploma of Mountain Emergency Medicine for Emergency Physicians or Paramedics, certified by ICAR, UIAA and ISMM.

Helvetia's Dream
Lesen Sie auf deutsch bitte weiter unten weiter...
‘Helvetia’s Dream’ takes you on a nighttime journey to some of the most beautiful spots in the Swiss Alps – from Arosa to Zermatt, including the world famous mountains Matterhorn and Eiger.
Please pay special attention to the following scenes:
@0:46 watch the persistent train of a bright meteor above Tijerflue Mountain in Arosa, December 2010, which was visible for about 20 minutes. A slow motion effect is applied for better visibility of the shooting star and its trail of ‘smoke’, which consists of ionized gas left behind as the meteor burns up in the atmosphere.
@1:14 clouds above Lake Geneva steam up the lens.
@1:36 on the very left: Climbers step into the unpredictable Eiger Nordwand.
@1:44 the Milky Way rises above the ‘Donkey’ rock on Pilatus.
@1:58 snowcats nearby cause the lighting of the summit cross on Fronalpstock Mountain. (Snowcat lights usually spoil time-lapse)
@2:21 the wind changes the reflection of Säntis Mountain in the Seealpsee.
@2:35 three settings showing orbits of stars. This is an alternative technique to display the movement of stars by sequentially adding the luminosity of each exposure. The result is basically a long exposure with a large aperture.
@2:49 the waxing new moon, not full moon, setting over Pilatus.
For the "making of" information and photo gallery check out the project website www.helvetiabynight.com.
‘Helvetia by Night’ is a time-lapse project about Switzerland by night. Short videos of long nights present you the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps and show you the magic of a spectacular nighttime sky. Imagine watching a slide-show at fast speed or looking at a flip book. It is photography turning into a movie. Everything in the videos is real and happening out there while most of us are sleeping.
Some words about me:
I grew up in Arosa, a small paradise in the mountains of eastern Switzerland located 1800m above sea level. Inspired by such great scenery, photography has become my passion early in life. Since 2005 I work as press photographer for the Swiss press photo agency KEYSTONE in Zurich. Time-lapse photography became a favorite hobby of mine in the year 2011. Besides that I am doing some other private work which can be found here: www.dellabella.ch
Have fun watching the time-lapse videos!
‘Helvetias Traum’ ist ein nächtlicher Streifzug durch die Schweizer Alpen – von Arosa bis Zermatt. Zu den Höhepunkten gehören die weltbekannten Berge Matterhorn und Eiger.
Schenken Sie folgenden Szenen besondere Aufmerksamkeit:

“Our steps follow our instinct and take us into the unknown.
We no longer see the obstacles behind us, but look forward to the ones ahead.”
Kilian is about to embark on some colossal personal challenges that will test his fitness, resolve and skills far beyond the reaches of his career so far. Combining his tremendous capacities for physical endurance with the mountain environment he is so passionate about, Kilian will undertake a number of feats throughout the coming years that stand to change our perception of human capabilities.
The multiple record holder and 3-time winner of the Mont Blanc ultra trail will bring together the sports of ski alpinsim and ultra running as he attempts a series of mountain routes in ground-breaking style - several of them never attempted previously. This spectacular journey will redefine the idea of ‘travelling light’ with technical equipment and back up kept to a bare minimum. The powerful force of nature will provide a rich backdrop for encounters with the natural world and humanity as Kilian attempts the ‘Summits of My Life’.
The project begins this summer in the Mont Blanc massif, where Kilian will set out on two incredible mountain trips, traversing the massif from east to west (Champex to les Contamines) on skis, and then from south to north (Courmayeur to Chamonix) climbing and running. Neither of these routes have been attempted in previously. The project will continue into the coming years, with record attempts planned on Mount Elbrus, the Matterhorn, a speed attempt of Mont Blanc, Mount Mckinley, Aconcagua, and all culminating in an exciting expedition to the roof of the world, Mount Everest.
Montaz-Rosset film are delighted to be part of this incredible project - follow the action on theproject website and join us on facebook.

It’s about being ourselves.”

the Peak
This is my newest project from my home country Switzerland about the most famous Swiss mountain the Matterhorn. I was 3 times in Zermatt between August and October 2012 to make this film. I stayed some nights outside under a starry sky and a lot of falling stars. During October on 2’700m/8'858f over sea it gets really cold. But it was worth to do it.
Please share it, if you like it!

winter wonderland
This time-lapse video was produced between November 2011 and March 2012 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Locations were Hopfensee, Rothsee, Staffelsee, Starnberger See, Zugspitze, Gornergrat, just to name a few...
I have spent all my spare time in the last five month to shoot this time-lapse video. I was on location before and after work as well as all the weekends to shoot these footages here... I slept at 2900 meters above see level to capture some of Europe’s most famous mountains at sunrise… And yes, it was pretty cold out there... The „2012 European cold wave“ started on 27 January 2012 and has brought snow and freezing temperatures to nearly everywhere in Europe. Low temperatures hit Germany and other European countries, reaching as low as −35 °C (−31 °F). Perfect weather for landscape photography…
Shooting this video was one of the best experiences in my life. Traveling around to capture nature's beauty in my homeland was amazing. I had the chance to film a really cold winter day, and it left me breathless. Please enjoy this video fullscreen. And thanks for wachting (and sharing).
