Hair Style for Safety WWII
In the early 1940s, American film actress Veronica Lake changed her trademark peekaboo hairstyle to encourage women working in war industry factories to adopt more practical, safer hairstyles. Veronica Lake was a popular American film actress who enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim, especially for her femme fatale roles in film noir with Alan Ladd during the 1940s. A stray lock of her shoulder-length blonde hair during a publicity photo shoot led to her iconic hairstyle which hid one eye, and was widely imitated ( en.wikipedia.org ). Clipped from the US News Review, Issue 5, available at the Internet Archives.

Veronica Lake - Love Is Blue
A tribute to the beautiful Veronica Lake - The peek a boo girl. She was the actress who truly personified the word femme fatale. During the 1940's Veronica was one of the most popular and sought-after actresses. The clips in this video are from the movies; The Blue Dahlia This Gun For Hire The Glass Key So Proudly We Hail! Sullivan's Travels Quotes: "I wasn't a sex symbol, I was a sex zombie." "I will have one of the cleanest obits of any actress. I never did cheesecake, I just used my hair." " You could put all the talent I had into your left eye and still not suffer from impaired vision." (On Marlon Brando:) "Our romance was short but sweet. He was on the dawn of a brilliant film career, and I was in the twilight of one. Of course, my career could never compare with his." (Veronica in 1970, reflecting on her career:) " I've reached a point in my life where it's the little things that matter. I'm no longer interested in doing what's expected of me. I was always a rebel and probably could have got much farther had I changed my attitude. But when you think about it, I got pretty far without changing attitudes. I'm happier with that."

HAIRCUTS OF 1940'S
The war caused wide spread shortages, but fashion remained important. By day hair was kept out of sight in a turban or knitted snood which stopped it getting caught in machinery but generally hair still had some length. The Veronica Lake Hollywood star, hairstyle was very popular as was peroxide bleached hair. Glamorous styles with curls were preferred to the short styles of the twenties. Some factories even installed hair salons to improve women's long term attendance. During this era Princess Elizabeth popularised the wearing of a headscarf tied under the chin.

VERONICA LAKE Video tribute
song: "Veronica Lake" by Hellacopters (At Ropes End album, released by Epitaph 1998) VERONICA LAKE was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 14, 1919 with the birth name of Constance Frances Marie Ockelman. Her father worked for an oil company as a ship employee. While still a child, Veronica's parents moved to Florida when she wasn't quite a year old. By the time she was five, the family had returned to Brooklyn. She was exposed to acting early when she starred in a primary school play. It was to be her only stage outing, at least for a while. When Veronica was 12, her father died in an explosion on an oil ship. One year later her mother wed Anthony Keane and Veronica took his last name as her own. From that point on the family moved around a lot, living in Canada, New York State and Miami, Florida. By the time Veronica had graduated from high school she was already known as one of the local Miami beauties. She felt that she was ready for films. Her mother and step-father moved to a small home in Beverly Hills, California in 1938 where Mrs. Keane enrolled her lovely daughter in the well known Bliss Hayden School of Acting in Hollywood. She didn't have to wait long for a part to come her way. Her first movie was as one of the many coeds in the RKO film, Sorority House (1939) in 1939. It was a minor part, to be sure, but it was a start. Veronica quickly followed up that project with two other films. All Women Have Secrets (1939) and Dancing Co-Ed (1939), both in 1939 ...

40's make-up look tutorial - Veronica Lake
40's make-up's probably one of my favorite make-up looks to do ever ! It's such a classic beauty make-up look which is probably why I love doing it so much. Facts : 40's foundation was pale and quite heavy. It was a total matt finish and quite powdery. Back then, they used stick foundation (Max Factor) to have a very high coverage and matt finish. You can use a pan stick foundation or if you have an oily skin, use a powder foundation. If you're a woman of color just use your regular foundation shade because you don't want to look grey. 2 main things define 40's make-up : the eye brows and the lips. The eye brows were not as full as in the 50's but not as thin as in the 30's. They were really long (going in direction of your temples) and quite straight. In french this type of eye brows are called "en ailes de pigeon". I myself have very 40's eye brows, so it's easy for me to create them on myself. If your eye brow shape is different, you'd have to cover them using the glue method, plasto wax method, soap method or eye lash glue method. The lips were what we call "bow lips" just because they were in a bow shape. This is probably the hardest part to do in that make-up. No heart shaped lips, the middle is quite flat and the sides are very full. The only tip I can give you to achieve them the right way, is to practice, practice and practice ! Once again, because of my labret piercing it is quite easy for me to do them. And lipstick was of course a matt true red color. Another ...
