The Trionychidae are a taxonomic family of a number of turtle genera commonly known as softshells. They are also sometimes called pancake turtles (although they are distinct from the pancake tortoise). Softshells include some of the world's largest freshwater turtles, though many can adapt to living in highly brackish areas. Members of this family occur in Africa, Asia, and North America. North American members of genus Trionyx were fairly recently (1987) assigned the resurrected genus name Apalone by Meylan, though they are still listed semicorrectly as Trionyx in some texts.
They are called "softshell" because their carapaces lack horny scutes (scales), though the spiny softshell, Apalone spinifera, does have some scale-like projections, hence its name. The carapace is leathery and pliable, particularly at the sides. The central part of the carapace has a layer of solid bone beneath it, as in other turtles, but this is absent at the outer edges. Some species also have dermal bones in the plastron, but these are not attached to the bones of the shell. The light and flexible shell of these turtles allows them to move more easily in open water, or in muddy lake bottoms. Having a soft shell also allows them to move much faster on land than most turtles. Their feet are webbed and are three-clawed, hence the family name "Trionychidae," which means "three-clawed." The carapace color of each type of softshell turtle tends to match the sand and/or mud color of its geographical region, assisting in their "lie and wait" feeding methodology.
The spiny softshell turtle (Apalone spinifera) is a species of softshell turtle, one of the largest freshwater turtle species in North America. They get their name from the spiny, cone-like projections on the leading edge of their carapaces, which are not scutes (scales).
The spiny softshell has a wide range, extending throughout much of the United States, as well as north into the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and south into the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Coahuila and Chihuahua.
The species was first described by Charles Alexandre Lesueur in 1827. It has been redescribed numerous times, leading to some confusion in its taxonomy. The recognized subspecies differ in the markings on the carapace, on the sides of the head, and on the feet. However, these markings, which are distinct as hatchlings, fade as the turtles grow larger. Adult females of the various subspecies, which grow larger than males, are not easily distinguishable from one another, and sometimes can only be assigned to a particular subspecies based on geography.

Twelve days ago we had 20 baby Wood Ducks jump from a nest box http://vimeo.com/69636321. It rained 5" that day, and another 5" since then. The babies don't make their own oil for the first couple of weeks, and have to get it from their mother. I was afraid that with all the rain and 20 babies that she wouldn't be able to keep all sufficiently "lubed" and warm. Jim put on waders and saw her with babies two days ago, but wasn't able to count them. I was out checking a nest box for any sign of fire ants today, and decided to scan the area where Jim saw them -- and there they were!!! I've got lots of video of them disappearing behind trees and brush, but I was able to get a little video out in the open where I was able to count them. I'm ecstatic to report that she has 19--a remarkabl...
The upper shell of the turtle is called the carapace. The lower shell that encases the belly is called the plastron. The carapace and plastron are joined together on the turtle's sides by bony structures called bridges. The inner layer of a turtle's shell is made up of about 60 bones that includes portions of the backbone and the ribs, meaning the turtle cannot crawl out of its shell. In most turtles, the outer layer of the shell is covered by horny scales called scutes that are part of its outer skin, or epidermis. Scutes are made up of a fibrous protein called keratin that also makes up the scales of other reptiles. These scutes overlap the seams between the shell bones and add strength to the shell. Some turtles do not have horny scutes. For example, the leatherback sea turtle and the s...
Fried soft-shell crab, seafood and artichoke lasagna, barbecue boudin, crawfish fettucini, corn and crab bisque, meat pies, catfish courtbouillion, wild game jambalaya, bread pudding and pralines... few places in the USA offer such distinctive food options. Nor do many places offer as much culinary passion as the french descendants in Louisiana. Enjoy my interview with the prop boat operator and his description of turtle as a food item. …along the banks of the Great Miami River herpetologist Paul Krusling found several baby Midland Smooth Softshell turtles. I videoed them burying themselves in the sand, capturing the little "shimmy" they perform when they are finished digging (for more visit http://redandthepeanut.blogspot.com/).
A quiet day on Lake Alice, University of Florida campus. Autumn colors, soft-shell turtles and - you got it - Gators.
This enormous softshell turtle has been trying to dig a nest and lay eggs in our yard for over a week. She is very skittish and my stepping out on the back porch was unfortunately enough to make her leave. Come back -- I'll stay in the house next time!
