The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a four-year state university, and is a component institution of the University of Texas System. Its campus is located on the bank of the Rio Grande in El Paso, Texas. The school was founded in 1914 as The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, and a mineshaft still exists on the mountainous, desert campus. It became Texas Western College in 1949, and The University of Texas El Paso in 1967. In Fall 2011, enrollment was 22,640.

UTEP is the largest university in the U.S. with a majority Mexican-American student population (about 75%). It is the only such university to be classified RU/H ("Research Universities (high research activity)") by the Carnegie Foundation.^[5]

Other notable features of UTEP are its campus architecture (modeled after the dzong style of Bhutan), and its athletic history (UTEP was the first college in the American South to integrate its intercollegiate sports programs).

The school officially opened on September 23, 1914, with 27 students in buildings at Fort Bliss. By 1916 enrollment had grown to 39 students, and women were allowed to enroll. The Fort Bliss buildings burned down, however, and in 1917 the school was rebuilt on its present site on land donated by wealthy El Paso residents. The distinctive dzong architecture style of the Kingdom of Bhutan was adopted.

In 1919 the school name was changed to the University of Texas Department of Mines and Metallurgy, and in 1920 to the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (TCM). TCM's students painted a large "M" for Miners on the Franklin Mountains in 1923, and the "M" is still there today.

The school's name changed again in 1949, this time to Texas Western College of the University of Texas (TWC). Notable events at TWC included the training in 1961 of the nation’s first Peace Corps class, the construction of Sun Bowl Stadium in 1966, and the winning of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship in 1966.

In 1967 the school's name changed to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Notable events at UTEP include:

• 1945 - The Sigma chapter of Phrateres, a non-exclusive, non-profit social-service club, was installed. Between 1924 and 1967, 23 chapters of Phrateres were installed in universities across North America.
• 1968 - UTEP alumnus Bob Beamon set a world long jump record at the Olympic Games.
• 1969 - UTEP won the first of seven NCAA Men's Cross Country Championships.
• 1974 - UTEP's first doctoral degree program in Geological Sciences was approved. UTEP won the first of seven NCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships.
• 1975 - UTEP won both the NCAA Men's Outdoor and Indoor National Championships.
• 1976 - The Engineering-Science Complex was completed and the College of Nursing was also created.
• 1977 - The Special Events Center (now the Don Haskins Center) with 12,000 seats was completed.
• 1980 - Haskell Monroe becomes UTEP's president.
• 1982 - Sun Bowl Stadium was Expanded, increasing seating capacity to 52,000.
• 1984 - The six-story University Library opened its doors to the public.
• 1988 - Diana Natalicio became UTEP's first woman president.

• 1989 - UTEP's second doctoral program was approved (in Electrical Engineering).
• 1991 - UTEP started its Computer Engineering doctorate program.
• 1993 - UTEP started a Psychology doctorate program.
• 1995 - UTEP started an Environmental science and engineering doctorate program.
• 1996 - UTEP started a Pharmacy cooperative doctorate program.
• 1997 - UTEP coach Don Haskins was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Special Events Center was renamed the Don Haskins Center. The Biological Sciences doctorate program was started.
• 1999 - Don Haskins retired from coaching. The History doctorate program was started, and the MBA online degree program was launched.
• 2000 - Nursing cooperative doctorate program was started. Miner Village was completed and UTEP was designated as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University by the Carnegie Foundation.
• 2002 - The $11 million Larry K. Durham Sports Center opened and the Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies was established.

• 2003 - Doctorate programs in International business, Civil engineering, Composition, and Rhetoric were started. $44 million in construction projects began for Academic Services and Biosciences buildings and an addition to the Engineering-Science Complex. Mike Price was hired as football coach. The $1.8 million Helen of Troy Softball Complex was approved.

• 2004 - UTEP's 90th anniversary. The Miners football team went to the Houston Bowl and the men's basketball team mad its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance.

• 2005 - UTEP moved to Conference USA from the Western Athletic Conference. UTEP is classified "RU/H" by the Carnegie Foundation.

Academics[link]

The University of Texas at El Paso is subdivided into several colleges, each of which offers a variety of degree programs including undergraduate, graduate and some post-graduate.

UTEP offers 81 undergraduate degrees, 65 master's-level degrees and 16 doctoral degrees. The university ranked, in 2006, second in federal research spending among UT System academic institutions, and in fiscal year 2006 reported $45.7 million in total research spending.

Hispanic Business magazine has twice ranked UTEP as the number one graduate engineering school for hispanics. The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering has called (UTEP) "a model for other engineering institutions who say that today's minority young people from low-income families can't succeed in a rigorous math- or science-based discipline."

The National Science Foundation has designated UTEP as a Model Institution for Excellence, one of only six in the country. UTEP is one of only 11 universities nationwide to receive a $5 million Teachers for a New Era (TNE) research grant from the Carnegie Corporation.

Campus architecture[link]

Larry K. Durham Sports Center

In 1916, only two years after the school opened, the original buildings were destroyed in a fire. The school was rebuilt on its present site in 1917. Kathleen Worrell, wife of the school’s first dean Stephen H. Worrell, had seen pictures of Bhutanese buildings in National Geographic. Noting the similarity of mountainous Bhutan (which is in the Himalayas) to the location of the campus, she suggested that the new buildings be in the style of Bhutanese dzongs (monastic fortresses), with massive sloping walls and overhanging roofs. This idea was enthusiastically accepted by all.

Prominent El Paso architect Henry Trost designed the first four buildings. All buildings since then have followed this style, including a fifth by Trost in 1920, and three more by his firm in 1933-1937. While the early structures only copied the general appearance of a dzong, recent buildings incorporate internal elements of the dzong form as well.

The Kingdom of Bhutan has honored UTEP's appropriation of their country's style. Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuk has visited the campus, and in 2009 the Kingdom presented UTEP with a hand-carved wooden temple to be erected on the campus. ^[9]

The "Himalayan" style of UTEP's campus made it an appropriate site for the Chenrezig Himalayan Cultural Center of El Paso, a Tibetan Buddhist facility.

School colors and logo[link]

The school's colors were originally made orange and white. However, in the early 1980s, Columbia blue was added so now the official colors are orange, white, and blue. When the new UTEP athletic department logo was introduced in the fall of 1999, a darker hue of blue was incorporated into the logo, as well as a silver accent to go with the customary orange.

"The Eyes of Texas" was adopted by the 1920 student body after the song had been "declared the school anthem for the University of Texas at Austin" [3] [4]."

UTEP's fight song, "Miners Fight" was also borrowed from the Austin campus. However, in the late 1980s and with the blessing of the estate of Marty Robbins, the UTEP Music Department wrote a new song to the melody "El Paso."

Nickname[link]

It is presumed that the nickname "Miners" came from the fact that the school was founded as the "State School of Mines and Metallurgy." In doing research on this project, early mention of "Ore Diggers" and "Muckers" for the nickname was found, but nothing to determine if the name "Miners" was voted upon by the student body, or if a faculty member, John W. (Cap) Kidd, chose the name. Kidd was a big booster of athletics, especially football, and in 1915, when funds were rather lean at the school, Kidd donated $800 to equip the football team. He also assisted with coaching, although he was not the head coach. The present track facility on campus bears Cap Kidd's name.

Athletics[link]

UTEP was the first college in the American South to integrate its intercollegiate sports programs. This breakthrough was made in the 1950s. When Don Haskins became basketball coach in 1961, he aggressively recruited black players. In 1966, Haskins' Miners won the NCAA Basketball championship, defeating an all-white Kentucky team in the final game.

This success story was retold in Haskins' autobiography Glory Road (2005), and in the 2006 movie Glory Road.

UTEP's sports programs have won a total of 21 NCAA Division I national championships.^[10] UTEP is currently tied for 10th overall among schools in Men's Sports Division I championships.

Tim Floyd (born February 25, 1954) is an American college basketball coach and the current head coach of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners men's basketball team. He is also a former head coach of several teams in both the NCAA and the NBA, most recently the University of Southern California men's college basketball team. Floyd is also known as the coach of the Chicago Bulls after Phil Jackson, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman left the team.

Personal life[link]

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Floyd is a 1977 graduate of Louisiana Tech University where he earned a bachelor's of science degree in health and physical education. He originally was a walk-on player at the University of Southern Mississippi, but he transferred to Louisiana Tech and was a scholarship player there. His father, who was also a coach, died when Floyd was 18.

Floyd and wife Beverly have one daughter, Shannon.

Coaching career[link]

University of Texas at El Paso[link]

Floyd's first coaching job was as an assistant at UTEP under Hall of Famer Don Haskins from 1977 to 1986. While Floyd was at UTEP, the Miners went to three straight NCAA Tournaments (from 1984 to 1986). They also went to the NIT three times (in 1980, 1981, and 1983), and UTEP won four Western Athletic Conference championships in those years.

University of Idaho[link]

Tim Floyd's first assignment as a head coach came at the University of Idaho, succeeding Bill Trumbo, who finished last in the Big Sky conference in each of his three seasons. Floyd coached the Vandals for two years. In his first season, the Vandals posted their first winning record since Don Monson left for Oregon after the 20-9 1983 season.

University of New Orleans[link]

At the University of New Orleans, Floyd tallied a 127–58 mark in six seasons as head coach. During his tenure, UNO advanced to postseason play five times, including two NCAA Tournament appearances in 1991 and 1993 and the NIT three times. At UNO, Floyd averaged 21 wins a season. Floyd is one of only four Division I coaches who have won four conference championships in the first five years at their school. In his final season at New Orleans in 1994, the team finished 20-10. Floyd reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth time in eight seasons, and UNO made its seventh postseason appearance in eight years.

Iowa State University[link]

Floyd was hired at Iowa State University in May 1994 as the 15th basketball coach in ISU history. In his four years at ISU, Floyd posted an 81-49 record. He is the only coach in Iowa State history to post three consecutive 20-win seasons, which in part, earned him a nickname among some NCAA coaches as "Timothy The Great".^{[citation needed]} He also led the team to three straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament and three straight first-round victories.

In his first season with the Cyclones, Floyd guided the team to a then-school-record 23 victories and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. During that season, the Cyclones were ranked in the AP Top 25 poll for 11 consecutive weeks, peaking at number eleven. Four of the eleven ISU losses were to 1995 NCAA Final Four teams. The Cyclones returned to the Big Eight Conference Tournament championship for the first time since 1986. In that year, Fred Hoiberg became the first Cyclone to earn All-American honors since Jeff Grayer in 1988.

Picked in preseason polls to finish last in the Big Eight, the 1995-96 Cyclones finished second in the league with a 9-5 mark and won Big Eight Conference Tournament with a win over the Kansas Jayhawks, then ranked the number five team in the nation. The Cyclones received the highest NCAA Tournament seed in school history. As the number five seed, the Cyclones defeated California Bears but lost to Utah Utes, then coached by Rick Majerus (who, in 2004, accepted and immediately resigned from the USC head coaching job that went to Floyd). Iowa State's 24 victories that season was a school record. For his coaching efforts, Floyd was named Big Eight Coach of the Year and runner-up to Gene Keady of Purdue University for AP National Coach of the Year.

In the 1996-1997 season,with high expectations and a ranking as high as #4 natioanl ranking, Floyd and the Cyclones posted a 22-9 mark and advanced to their first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 11 years. In the NCAA Tournament, the sixth-seeded Cyclones defeated the Illinois State Redbirds in the first round and the Cincinnati Bearcats before losing to UCLA Bruins in overtime in a game they led by double digits most of the game..

Floyd was also responsible for landing would-be recruits, and currents pros, Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich. Both Collison and Hinrich withdrew their verbal commitments upon Floyds departure from Iowa State.

While at Iowa State, Floyd coached future pros Dedric Willoughby, Fred Hoiberg (now the current Head Coach at Iowa State), Kelvin Cato, Marcus Fizer and Paul Shirley.

Chicago Bulls[link]

On July 23, 1998, Floyd was hired head coach of the Chicago Bulls of the NBA. That off-season, the core of the Bulls championship teams retired or left, leaving the equivalent of an expansion team. During the lockout season of 1998-1999, the team posted a record of 13–37. The next season, the Bulls had a 17-65 record. The team continued to regress, posting a 15–67 record in the 2000-2001 season. His fourth year as coach was marred by fights with players and management. Floyd resigned on December 24, 2001 after a 4–21 start.

In his four seasons with the Bulls, Floyd posted a record of 49–190. The team did not make the NBA Playoffs in any of those years. Known as a favorite of Jerry Krause by the Chicago media, an entertaining press conference had Floyd proclaim [I'm not] "Jerry's boy."^[1]

New Orleans Hornets[link]

As head coach of the New Orleans Hornets in 2003-2004, Floyd posted a 41-41 record, despite the mid-season loss of Hornets star Jamal Mashburn. The Hornets lost in the first round of the playoffs, taking the Miami Heat the full seven games. Ownership was dissatisfied and dismissed Floyd after just one season.

Floyd ended his NBA career with a 93-235 overall record, including the playoffs, admitting in interviews that, as an NBA coach, "I wasn't very good at it". It was announced on November 12, 2009 that Floyd would be rejoining the Hornets as a top assistant to head coach and General Manager Jeff Bower.^[2]

University of Southern California[link]

On January 14, 2005, Floyd was hired as head coach of the USC Trojans, replacing interim coach Jim Saia who filled in after the school fired coach Henry Bibby.^[3] USC had originally hired Rick Majerus on December 15, 2004, however he unexpectedly resigned five days later.^[4][5] Floyd was the Trojans' immediate next choice.^[3][4]

Floyd's initial season may be regarded as a success. The 2005–06 Trojans finished the regular season with a 17–12 (8–10) record and sixth place in the Pacific 10 Conference ("Pac-10"), including three conference losses by a combined nine points. Floyd was the subject of heightened media attention in October 2006, when 14-year-old high school freshman Dwayne Polee Jr., son of former NBA player Dwayne Polee, verbally accepted a scholarship offer from Floyd. Polee Jr. had yet to play in a high school basketball game.

For the 2006–2007 season, Floyd led the Trojans to a 25–12 (13–8) record (most wins in school history) and third place in the Pac-10. He also led this team to finals of the Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament, where they lost to Oregon. Floyd took the Trojans to the 2007 NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16, only the second USC team to do so since 1979. However, USC lost to number one seeded UNC on March 23, 2007.

In the 2008 NCAA Tournament, the #6 seeded Trojans fell 80-67 to the #11 seed Kansas State Wildcats in the first round.

Floyd's Trojans won the 2009 Pac-10 Tournament by defeating Arizona State, then made it to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, losing to eventual runner-up Michigan State. This marked the first time the Trojans had made a third consecutive NCAA tournament. After USC's exit from the tournament, Floyd was offered the vacant coaching position at Arizona but turned it down.^[6]

The off-season immediately following the 2009 tournament proved to be tumultuous for Floyd and the USC program: Key starters DeMar DeRozan, Taj Gibson and Daniel Hackett all declared for the NBA draft on the same day.^[7] Floyd was accused of providing improper benefits by handing cash to Los Angeles event promoter Rodney Guillory, one of the handlers for O. J. Mayo, to influence the then-high school star to choose USC, resulting in an NCAA investigation.^[6] Due to the NCAA investigation and academic issues, several key recruits decommitted or chose different universities. After Marcus Johnson, who played only 16 games for USC, averaging 3.6 points, opted to turn professional, Floyd lamented to a gathering of boosters: "Kansas has two players who would have been NBA lottery picks, Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins, and they are returning to school. Good for them. Our guys get an offer from Islamabad and they're gone."^[7]

Claiming to have lost enthusiasm for his job, Floyd resigned as the head coach of USC on June 9, 2009.^[6] Floyd first notified a paper in his home state of Mississippi; his resignation was accepted by USC, which was faced with looking for a replacement late in the off-season.^[6] Following an internal investigation, USC vacated its 21 wins from the 2007-08 season and withdrew from postseason consideration (including the Pac-10 tournament) for the 2009-10 season.^[8]

On March 30, 2010, UTEP announced the hiring of Tim Floyd. Floyd replaced Tony Barbee who left to take a head coach job at Auburn.^[9]

"Tim Floyd, who brought respectability on the court and controversy off it to the Southern California basketball program, resigned Tuesday. Floyd stepped down a month after a published report that he gave $1,000 in cash to the man who acted as a go-between when star player O.J. Mayo decided to attend USC and play his freshman season at the school."^[10]
