Sailing in Sweden with Najad 505 Okipik Part 5: Skagen
Crossing the Skagerrak with up to 9 knots of speed on a sunny day, from Swedens Westcoast to Skagen on the Jutland peninsula of Denmark. Together with the Kattegat and the Oresund Strait, the Skagerrak Strait connects the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. The meeting of the two Seas, often causes some scary Storms in the area. But we were lucky... "Mr. Big Skagerrak" was gentle that day and also on our following return to Swedens Marstrand one day after. So let me say..."Thank you Mr. Big Skagerrak!" ;-)

Johann Strauss II - Deutscher Krieger - Marsch, op. 284
The tuneful Deutscher Krieger-Marsch would certainly be cited by those who maintain that Austrian military marches are often more suited to the smooth parquet of the dance floor than the rough terrain of the battlefield. Nevertheless, in common with a great many Strauss family compositions, the provenance of Johann's march lies in the world of martial politics. January 1864 saw the issuing of an ultimatum to Denmark by Austria and Prussia, who had allied over the vexed question of Schleswig-Holstein. Denmark remained defiant, and after declaring war on her the Austrian and Prussian forces crossed the River Eider on 1 February and advanced towards the Jutland Peninsula. Johann Strauss celebrated this military alliance in his Deutscher Krieger-Marsch, which he presented for the first time at a concert in the Vienna Volksgarten on 28 February. Some thirty-five years later Adolf Müller junior, and librettists Victor Léon and Leo Stein, were to take this march and transform it into the Entrance of the Countesses in Ac t 2 of their pastiche-operetta, Wiener Blut (1899).

Jutland
Recorded July 31, 2011: Jutland, historically also called Cimbria, is the name of the peninsula that juts out in Northern Europe toward the rest of Scandinavia, forming the mainland part of Denmark. In the video I sail into Aarhus, Denmark on the Emerald Princess. After disembarking the ship I journey to Silkeborg and see the Tollund Man. That is followed by a visit to Sky Mountain. My excursion concludes with a railway trip between Bryrup and Vrads on a vintage steam train. The video concludes with the Emerald Princess sailing away from Aarhus. From: timvp.com

DSB Class MY at Randers, Denmark
Danish State Railways (DSB) once owned 59 of these classic machines. Built in Sweden by NOHAB, the MY class locomotives featured both the sturdy GM/EMD 567 diesel prime mover and a close approximation of the bulldog nose that were trademarks of EMD's famous F-units found on most N. American railroads in the early diesel era. Today, DSB has divested itself of these engines, most having been sold off to private operators. DSB now funtions primarily as a landlord for the Danish railway system, with multiple private operators (Railion, Arriva, DB Cargo, etc . . .) - something resembling the "open access" plan that is sometimes suggested to increase competitiveness on American railroads. The single MY that DSB still owns is the former 1135, now classified as a "Service Locomotive". I don't know the circumstances, but I caught a glimpse of this engine as it assembled a night train at Frederikshavn, near the northern tip of the Jutland peninsula. Unable to see any more or give chase that night, I was somewhat despondent the next day. However, luck was with me as I stumbled across the engine and train at Randers the next afternoon. The crew may have been to lunch, but when they returned, they moved the train about 30 meters forward, just enough for me to get some video of the move and to capture the classic sound of an MY in motion. Too bad I couldn't stick around for more than this, but it definitely made my day!

Skagen (The Skaw) is a projection of land and a town, with a population of 8636, a part of the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. Skagen is considered the boundary between the Skagerrak (named after Skagen) and the Kattegat. At its very tip is a sandy, shifting headland known as Grenen.
