Leslie Fenton (12 March 1902 – 25 March 1978) was an English-born American actor and film director. He appeared in 62 films between 1923 and 1945.

Fenton went to America with his mother, Elizabeth, and his brothers when he was six years old - they sailed as steerage passengers on board the R.M.S. Celtic, which departed from the Port of Liverpool, 11 September 1909, and arrived at the Port of New York, where they were ferried over to Ellis Island for "U.S. Immigrant Inspection" on 19 September; they were quickly admitted and continued their journey by rail to join his father, Reginald Fenton, in Mifflin, Ohio). As a young immigrant, Leslie worked in a shoe factory then ran away to New York and began a career on the stage. His film career began later with Fox Studios.

During the Second World War he was commissioned in the Royal Navy. In 1942 in command of a Motor Launch he took part in the St Nazaire Raid. He also directed 19 films between 1938 and 1951.

He married American actress Ann Dvorak in 1932; the union was childless and ended in divorce in 1945. His younger brother was Frank Fenton, the noted screenwriter and novelist. Fenton died in Montecito, California, aged 76.

Graham Anthony Fenton^[1] (born 22 May 1974 in Whitley Bay,^[2] Tyne and Wear) is an English former professional footballer and manager of North Shields.

As a player he played as a midfielder, notably played in the Premier League for Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City, as well as in the Football League for West Bromwich Albion, Walsall, Stoke City, Blackpool and Darlington. He also spent a year in Scotland with St. Mirren before later playing for Non-league Blyth Spartans. Hewas also capped once by England at under-21 level. He took over as manager of North Shields on 6 April 2012.

Fenton joined Aston Villa as a trainee in June 1990, turning professional in February 1992.^[1] He was loaned out to West Bromwich Albion in January 1994, making his league debut against Leicester City in the same month.^[1] His loan spell at Albion was very successful, producing three goals in seven games and contributing to Albion's eventual survival in Division One, leaving many Albion fans "bitterly disappointed" when he did not sign permanently.^[1] He instead returned to Villa, making his club debut in a 0–0 Premiership draw at home to Manchester City on 22 February 1994. In March 1994 he played in Villa's League Cup winning side, playing all of the 3–1 victory against Manchester United at Wembley.^[3] Fenton made his only appearance for the England Under-21s on 15 November 1994 in a 1–0 win against Ireland U-21s at St James' Park; the team included several future full internationals, including Sol Campbell and Nicky Butt.^[4]

In November 1995, having never claimed a regular place in the Villa first team, Fenton made a £1,500,000 move to reigning Premiership champions Blackburn, but with Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton in rich goalscoring form his first team opportunities were limited. He scored seven times for Blackburn, including two as a late substitute against Newcastle United, the team Fenton has supported since childhood, in April 1996 which effectively ended Newcastle's title challenge.

In August 1997 he moved to Martin O'Neill's Leicester City for a fee of £1,100,000. He scored on his Leicester debut, having replaced Ian Marshall as a late substitute in the 2–1 win away to Liverpool, but again struggled to establish himself, making only 34 league appearances (21 as substitute) over three seasons.

He joined Walsall on loan in March 2000, scoring once against Port Vale,^[5] and had an unsuccessful trial with Barnsley in July 2000.^[6] In August 2000 he joined Stoke City on a monthly contract,^[7] scoring once against Reading,^[8] and at the end of the following month signed for St Mirren on a two-year contract.^[9]

In August 2001 Fenton joined Blackpool on a free transfer, but once more struggled to establish himself in the first team. He had a spell on loan with Darlington between September and December 2002,^[10][11] scoring once against Bournemouth,^[12] and was one of nine players released by Blackpool manager Steve McMahon in May 2003.^[13]

In July 2003 Fenton returned to the North East of England, joining Blyth Spartans.^[14] Blyth manager Paul Baker appointed Fenton as player-assistant manager in July 2004.^[15] Fenton took over as caretaker-manager of Blyth when Baker left that September,^[16] returning to his player-assistant manager role in October 2004 after the appointment of Harry Dunn as manager.^[17] In the 2005-06 season he was part of the Spartans' side that gained promotion to the Conference North by winning the Northern Premier League. He was assistant manager and player at North Shields from 2009 April 2011.^[18]

Carl Fenton (1889-1980) born as Walter G. Haenschen, was an American bandleader, composer, and radio musician.

Name origin[link]

The Carl Fenton Orchestra (AKA "Carl Fenton’s Orchestra") was a title given to Brunswick Records studio bands through the 1920s. The name was invented by Brunswick music director Walter Gustave "Gus" Haenschen shortly after taking the position for their brand-new American division. Later, the name was taken by violinist Rudy Greenberg.

Haenschen, whose own name was considered ill-suited for commercial recordings, haphazardly chose the name "Fenton" after the town of Fenton, Missouri, near his hometown of St Louis, Missouri. He attended Washington University. (He told an interviewer "How do you find a name? Just pull it out of a hat." The first name "Carl" was likely selected by Brunswick’s office staff.

Early recordings[link]

The earliest songs recorded by Carl Fenton’s Orchestra were Karavan and Romance, from October 1919. Brunswick Records released many "Carl Fenton" records, with various line-ups of musicians. The band was typically led by Haenschen in the studio, but was led by studio musician/conductor Reuben "Rudy" Greenberg during their occasional concerts.

Orchestra change[link]

Around the time that Haenschen left Brunswick Records in mid-1927, Greenberg purchased the rights to the Carl Fenton name. From 1928-1930 Greenberg was musical director for Gennett Records, where he recorded as "Carl Fenton’s New Yorkers". Under the direction of Greenberg, the Carl Fenton Orchestra then moved to radio, where they co-starred with a young Bing Crosby from 1931-1932 on the CBS network (on tour the orchestra was named "Cremo Orchestra" after sponsor Cremo Cigars).

In 1932, Greenberg had his name legally changed to Carl Fenton. He continued to work as a music director for radio and theaters until his death in March 1980.

James Martin Fenton (born 25 April 1949, Lincoln) is an English poet, journalist and literary critic. He is a former Oxford Professor of Poetry.

Life and career[link]

Born in Lincoln, Fenton grew up in Lincolnshire and Staffordshire, the son of Canon John Fenton, a noted biblical scholar.^[1] He was educated at the Durham Choristers School, Repton and Magdalen College, Oxford. He graduated with a B.A. in 1970.^[2]

Fenton acquired at school an enthusiasm for the work of W.H. Auden. At Oxford John Fuller, who happened to be writing A Reader's Guide to W.H. Auden at the time, further encouraged that enthusiasm. Auden became possibly the greatest single influence on Fenton's own work.

In his first year at university Fenton won the Newdigate Prize for his sonnet sequence Our Western Furniture.^[2] Later published by Fuller's Sycamore Press, it largely concerns the cultural collision in the 19th century between the United States and Japan. It displays in embryo many of the characteristics that define Fenton's later work: technical mastery combined with a fascination with issues that arise from the Western interaction with other cultures. Our Western Furniture was followed by Exempla, notable for its frequent use of unfamiliar words, as well as commonplace words employed in an unfamiliar manner.

His first collection, Terminal Moraine (1972) won a Gregory Award.^[2] With the proceeds he traveled to East Asia, where he wrote of the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam, and the end of the Lon Nol regime in Cambodia which presaged the rise of Pol Pot. The Memory of War (1982) ensured his reputation as one of the greatest war poets of his time.^[2]

Fenton returned to London in 1976. He was political correspondent of the New Statesman, where he worked alongside Christopher Hitchens, Julian Barnes and Martin Amis.^[2] He became the Assistant Literary Editor in 1971, and Editorial Assistant in 1972.^[3] Earlier in his journalistic career, like Hitchens, he had written for Socialist Worker, the weekly paper of the British trotskyist group then known as the International Socialists.^[4] In 1983 Fenton accompanied his friend Redmond O'Hanlon to Borneo. A description of the voyage can be found in the book Into the Heart of Borneo.

Fenton won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize in 1984 for Children in Exile: Poems 1968-1984. He was appointed Oxford Professor of Poetry in 1994, a post he held till 1999.^[3] He was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 2007.

He has said, "The writing of a poem is like a child throwing stones into a mineshaft. You compose first, then you listen for the reverberation."

Fenton has been a frequent contributor to The Guardian,^[5] The Independent and The New York Review of Books.^[6] He also writes the head column in the editorials of each Friday's "Evening Standard."^[7] In 2007 he appeared in a list of the "100 most influential gay and lesbian people in Britain" published by The Independent on Sunday.^[8] His partner is Darryl Pinckney, the prize-winning novelist, playwright and essayist perhaps best known for the novel High Cotton (1992).
