Winter Taedong River - DPRK Places
DPRK - Democratic People's Republic of Korea www.korea-dpr.com American Tours North Korea - US citizens are allowed to travel to the DPRK but under certain restrictions. American citizens can visit North Korea during the Mass Games only, can stay a maximum of 4 nights and 5 days and are not permitted to enter or exit the country via train. An increasing number of foreigners hope for tourism in the DPRK with the tourist season at hand. Visitors are always welcome and their personal safety is surely guaranteed in the DPRK which values international visits, exchange, mutual understanding, cooperation and respect. The government encourages tourism with a view to strengthening solidarity with peoples of all the countries in the idea of independence, peace and friendship and building a more prosperous and civilized country. The first travel company was established in the country in August Juche 42 (1953) and later the state general bureau of tourism for the development of tourism. The DPRK became an official member of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) in September 1987. In April 1997 it was officially admitted to the Pacific Area Travel Association (PATA). The state allotted a great amount of fund to building tourist grounds and service facilities at scenic spots. Hundreds of tourist grounds involve the capital city of Pyongyang, the west sea barrage, a leading lock gate of the world, and such famous mountains as Mt. Myohyang, Mt. Chilbo and Mt. Kuwol. The Okryu Bridge on the Taedong River in Pyongyang
The Okryu (bead-like flows) Bridge was completed for use in August 1960. The bridge is 700 meters (about 2300 feet) long and 28.5 meters (93.5 feet) wide. Both ends of the bridge are decorated with elaborate granite blocks of balustrade (ornamental design flourishes) and chandeliers that bear the bridge's name in Kim il Sung's handwriting. North Korean children crossing River Taedong in Pyongyang
Pyongyang, August 23 (KCNA) -- A competition among schoolchildren here in crossing the River Taedong was held Tuesday to mark the Youth Day. It brought together at least 900 secondary and primary schoolers in the city. When a pistol was fired to kick off the competition, the swimmers at the promenade of the river swam towards the other side of bank where the Tower of the Juche Idea is standing. They, keeping themselves in a good formation, swam displaying swimming technique they have cultivated in their day-to-day. Schoolchildren and citizens cheered them up, sending them applause. Prior to the competition, a model performance crossing the River Taedong was given by pupils of Pyongyang Namsin Primary School and Pyongyang Sanghung Primary School. -0- Nordkorea

West Sea Barrage (North Korean propaganda film) 1/3
The controversial Nampho Dam or West Sea Dam, also known as the West Sea Barrage, is a barrage located 15 km west of the special city of Nampho, North Korea. It is a huge, eight-kilometer-long system of dams, three lock chambers, and 36 sluices, allowing the passage of ships up to 50000 tons. The dam closes the Taedong River off from the Yellow Sea. It was built from 1981 to 1986, with the resources of the whole country directed to this main construction project. The stated goal of the West Sea Dam was: The raising of the water level in the Taedong River and increased ship traffic; The prevention of seawater intrusion into the fresh water, thus solving the water supply problem; The irrigation of additional land, enlarging the arable territory of the region. Foreign critics claim raising the Taedong river level has led to the loss of valuable farmland, contributing to North Korean famine. The dam is considered a major accomplishment of North Korea. It is a commonly seen backdrop for North Korean television news broadcasts on KCNA, and is a stop for international tourists. The locks are at geographical coordinates 38°41′N 125°10′E. The dam's estimated total cost was $4 billion (US).

CNN Jan 2000 USS Pueblo in Pyongyang
CNN story in 2000. They visited the USS PUEBLO docked on the Taedong river, Pyongyang, North Korea. The ship was towed over 1000 miles in "International" waters from Wonsan on the east coast to the Taedong river on the west coast. This was a secret part of an agreement by the Clinton Administration with North Korea to stop nuclear facilities from being built. USS PUEBLO AGER-2 is still a commissioned active duty ship of the United States Navy. WWW.USSPUEBLO.ORG

Pyongyang at Night on April 15, 2012
Driving through the streets of Pyongyang on April 15th, 2012, was very different from other nights. Most nights the city is nearly dark with no streetlights and just the faint glow of dim lighting coming from the square windows of highrise concrete apartment buildings. April 15th was different as the city streetlights and buildings were lit up with electricity (though still lacking by Western standards) in celebration of the 100th birthday of Kim Il Sung, North Korea's founder who is worshiped in the country. These videos were taken as we drove the streets to a bridge to watch the fireworks display next to the Taedong River with local North Koreans. The number of cars on the bridge was also very unusual, since normally there are relatively few cars in the city.
