Sinicization

The Hmong are a sub-set of one of the ethnic groups known collectively in China as the Miao national ethnic minority (苗族). The Hmong are closely related and largely intelligible with groups such as the Mong, Green (Blue) Hmong, Small Flowery Miao, and Gha-Mu. They are distantly related and variably intelligible to other groups such as A-Hmao, Big Flowery Miao, Ghao Xong, Red Miao, Hmu, Ka Nao, and Black Miao. Culturally, their practices have been closely guarded and are still very similar in many respects. All Hmong/Miao share common ancestry through Chiyou (Txiv Yawg) and have many shared practices, such as love of the qeej/lusheng instrument and wholesale celebration of the New Year event (see Wikipedia article). en.wikipedia.org In the West, Hmong people have become noticeably xenophobic and prefer to distance themselves from the other Miao of China. Many Western Hmong refuse to acknowledge kinship for various reasons, but the most obvious is blatant ignorance and a notion of self-righteousness and self-legitimacy (the root word for selfish is "self"). However, the reality is that most Hmong in the West don't even know they originated from China, or if they do, that's literally it.
