Illiteracy Rate High in Patna, India
Tuesday is International Literacy Day, but illiteracy still remains an issue in eastern Indian city of Patna. Although the number of students has increased, there are not enough teachers despite the government's repeated efforts to hire more. [Nilam Kumari, Student]: "There are many students as compared to the teachers available here due to which they cannot keep a check on each and every student. The teachers are very good and they also take our classes but only for half an hour, which is not enough for us. There are a total of 75 students in our class. The level of teaching in our school is not good due to the dearth of teachers." Lack of infrastructure is also a problem. Playgrounds aren't big enough, either. [Kamlesh Kumar, Teacher]: "We want accommodate 2000 students in the school but we are not able to give admission to the students who come here as there are no teachers and no places to sit." The school has asked for help from government officials. [Mohammad Sarfuddin, Local]: "We don't send our kids to the school because there are no teachers and if there are no teachers what will our kids study in school? That is why the children go to school, play for some time and come back." Locals hope the money that is available can be used more wisely in the future.

Egypt: Poor Agricultural Production & 50% Literacy Rate Has Egypt on Brink of Economic Collapse
According to leading Economist and Author of bestseller "How Civilizations Die: And Why Islam Is Dying Too, David Goldman predicts "the economic fallout from the Arab Spring is like a modern-day plague for Egypt." Factors such as a 50% literacy rate, rising food prices, a drought, 50% of food imported even with 2/3 of their population in Agriculture, and lose of nearly all tourism revenue because of the Arab Spring. Egypt may be the single most dysfunctional nation aside from Somalia. Efforts in place to improve literacy rate of Afghan Army 09.08.11
Every 8 or 9 weeks in Afghanistan a new wave of Army recruits are being trained up for service. But when they first arrive only between 10 and 20% of them know how to read and write. Literacy levels are poor throughout the country, but efforts to improve standards are being taken very seriously. Members of the Brigade Advisory Group have been overseeing lessons in language and arithmetic.

South Sudan battles low literacy rate
www.youtube.com English News Today Plz Subscrib for Latest News South Sudan has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world, as only about a quarter of its people can read and write. Decades of civil war meant few people had the chance to go to school. The re-opening of South Sudan's main university means this young nation will benefit from a new generation of graduates. With one of the lowest adult literacy rates in the world, it will need them. Al Jazeera's Anna Cavell reports from the South Sudanese capital Juba.

World Literacy of Canada's Adult Literacy Program
In South Asia, and particularly in Uttar Pradesh, the Indian state in which WLC is focused, literacy rates are extremely low. In UP, according to census 2001 survey, the literacy rate for males was 68.8% and among adult women, the literacy rate was only 42.98%. In India the overall literacy rate is 64.8 % (Male: 75.3%; Female: 53.7%). Historically, a variety of factors have been found to be responsible for poor female literacy rates: gender based inequality, social discrimination and economic exploitation, occupation of girl children in domestic chores, low enrolment of girls in schools, low retention rates and high dropout rates. WLC provides functional literacy classes to women and older girls in communities where poverty is high and literacy rates are low. Women of all ages join our programs -- some are unmarried teenagers who never attended schools, many are the mothers of young children, and some are in their 70s and only now learning to read. Women receive instruction in Hindi reading and writing and basic mathematics as they work through a set of 4 government-provided readers which deal with material of interest to adult women, including everything from stories about famous, strong Indian women to information on family planning. Women attend relaxed classes with a supportive female teacher, and work through the readers at their own pace, some taking longer than others because of heavy work and family responsibilities. In the last project cycle (2004-07), WLC's ...

THE BEAUTY OF KERALA(slide show)
Kerala, the small, thin state on the Malabar Coast, in the southwestern region of India, had remained a void on the tourist map up to the last decade. Things changed fast in the mid-nineties with the government's policy of liberalization and suddenly Kerala has become the tourist hot spot in the 2000s. The state had not been a major destination for travelers, Indians or foreigners, because it had very few celebrated sights, unlike the adjacent state of Tamil Nadu, which has several temples, and Karnataka, which has both temples and palaces besides hill stations to boast of. As for beaches, Goa is the reigning queen. However, every visitor to Kerala has been enchanted by it. It certainly has at least one unique selling point - its backwaters. Nowhere else, not even Kashmir, has anything like this inhabited area of lagoons, lakes, canals and paddy fields; where visitors can gradually feel their worries fading away from them, like a snake sloughing its old skin. Industries are wary of starting a business in this state, as Keralites are known for an exuberant consciousness of their rights - a result of living in the most educated and developed state of the country with a literacy rate of a 100 per cent. The cities in Kerala are perpetually seething with strikes and agitations. These are a result of the communist power over Kerala, which is ironically religious communism. The leaders of the Communist Party openly involve themselves in religious functions and celebrations ...
