World Bank cuts growth outlook for 2013
www.euronews.com A frustratingly slow recovery in developed nations is holding back the global economy, according to the World Bank. It has dramatically cut its outlook for 2013 and warned that developing countries could suffer fallout from problems in Europe and the United States. Jim Yong Kim, World Bank President said: "Despite, promising and sometimes even courageous measures taken in Europe, their issues remain in the Eurozone and of course we still have fiscal policy issues in the United States. The risks from this situation are substantial, especially for developing countries that have remained remarkably resilient thus far." The World Bank also cut its forecast for developing countries, which last year grew at their slowest pace in a decade, to 5.5 percent in 2013 from 5.9 percent in the June forecast. It has advised developing nations to focus on structural policies and investments to support sustained growth. Meanwhile, the World Bank said a decline in China's unusually high investment rate was not likely to affect global growth over the medium to long term, but warned that a sharp decline could have domestic and global consequences. World Bank President: Growth in High and Low Income Countries Remains Weak
www.worldbank.org - "We can't wait for a return to growth in high-income countries," says World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim. "So we have to continue to support developing countries in making investments in infrastructure, in health, in education." Four years after the onset of the global financial crisis, the world economy remains fragile and growth in high-income countries is weak, says the new Global Economic Prospects Report.

The Education Crisis in Developing Countries
Expert Rebecca Winthrop explains that the education crisis in developing countries has three tiers of trouble: many children, especially those in conflict areas, can't go to school; many children who do go to school are not learning fundamental skills like reading; and post-primary students don't acquire the skills they need to get jobs. That's disastrous for both the children and the nations where they live, Winthrop argues. Investing just four percent of national GDP in education, she says, can lift children out of poverty and improve overall economic success for the country in which they live. goo.gl

Handmade Solar - October 2012 - Affordable Solar for Developing Countries
Our handmade solar project is now in its 3rd year! The first year (2010) started with a trip to Cameroon in to test feasibility of us taking handmade solar to Africa. In 2011 we established our UK based training course to develop techniques, this has led us to our recent trip to Tanzania. We established a handmade PV workshop making small USB solar chargers. These are designed to be 6 watt and include a charge regulator to protect any device plugged into them. Please enjoy our brief video to give you a clearer idea. Please visit the links at the end of the video and support us! Thank you.

euronews I talk - Should the EU remain the world's leading aid donor?
www.euronews.com All European Union citizens pay for aid to non-EU countries. More and more EU citizens are asking how much, where does it go and does anyone really know what happens to it? Joining us on ITalk today, Andris Piebalgs, EU Development Commissioner. Our first question comes from Daniel. Daniel, Cuba: "Hello my name is Daniel, I am from Cuba and live in Brussels. My question for the Commission is whether Europe is going to remain the world's leading donor or will the crisis push the EU into second place behind the United States." Alex Taylor: "So are we going to be able to continue being the first donor?" Andris Piebalgs: "Well it seems so. I would definitely wish that others were more ambitious because the EU is by far the strongest development aid supporter in the world. We give at least 0.42 percent of GNI, and the US and Japan roughly 0.2, so I wish that they would follow the Europeans." Alex Taylor: "Why do we continue to do this in the current economic crisis?" Andris Piebalgs: "Well, when the crisis strikes, it strikes the poorest countries more than more developed countries. There's less trade, less demand and more poverty. So, I believe that in times of crisis it is even more important to look towards poor countries because poverty creates insecurity, war and conflict. It's very clear that we can't, in times of crisis, forget the world because it will hit us back." Alex Taylor: "Ok, to press you on this point, another question on the same theme ...
