1. BBC documentary on the Council of Europe
A 25-minute BBC-documentary about the Council of Europe, clearly and accurately explains the history of the organisation, the important role that it has played in shaping the Europe of today and some of the challenges that it is currently facing, including the pressing need to ratify Protocol 14 and reduce the backlog at the European Court of Human Rights. It also describes the way the organisation is structured and how it works, and fairly and objectively looks at a number of main achievements and some of the criticisms that are levelled at it.

European Union's ban on Iranian channels-Comment-10-19-2012
European satellite provider Eutelsat SA says it has stopped the broadcast of several Iranian satellite channels following an order by the European Commission. The company ordered media services company, Arqiva, to take the Iranian satellite channels off one of its Hot Bird frequencies on Monday. In a separate statement emailed to Press TV, Arqiva said that the decision was made by the EU Council. "We terminated the contracts because it was the order of the European Commission. We have to follow it," Karen Badalov, area management of Eutelsat SA told Press TV. Meanwhile, Head of Public Relations of Arqiva, Gary Follows, told Press TV that as a result of reinforced EU Council sanctions and repeated requests by France's broadcasting authority for the permanent switch-off of Sahar 1, which is broadcast in the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) multiplex, the IRIB broadcasts through Eutelsat Hot Bird have been terminated. The Iranian channels being taken off the air include Press TV, al-Alam, Jam-e-Jam 1 and 2, Sahar 1 and 2, Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, Quran TV, and the Arabic-language al-Kawthar. The decision follows months of jamming of Iranian channels by European satellite companies. Observers believe that the European Union does not respect freedom of speech, and spares no efforts to silence the voice of alternative media outlets. Iran's Arabic-language news channel, al-Alam, has been jammed on a daily basis while airing a program on Bahrain ...

I thought the award bizarre, particularly as this morning, what we are discussing are a new range of measures that will further pile on the agony for those southern Eurozone states. Europe is now split from North to South with increasing violence and enmity between the peoples of the North of Europe and the South of Europe. So I don't think the peace prize was really very appropriate. Not of course, that it will pose you a problem tomorrow because there are no leaders in those southern European countries who frankly have got the courage to stand up to the might of Brussels and to challenge the Eurozone project. But what you will have at tomorrow's summit yet again, is the curious case of Mr Cameron. Because on the one hand, he is a big ally. He resists having a referendum. The concept of freedom of speech and tolerance enters a dark age as the Europe Union's executive body orders a ban on several Iranian channels, an author tells Press TV. And sure enough, in your dull and technocratic way, you've gone about your course. But I have to say, you're even worse than I thought you were going to be. I thought it was just going to be a federal Europe - a federal union. But actually it appears with every statement you make that what you now want is the total subjugation of the states to completely undemocratic structures based in Brussels. I misread the bailouts. I thought that when the bailouts happened - and I could see the panic around this chamber, people fearing the economic meltdown. But you of course were calm through it all, because you saw the bailouts as your opportunity to take control. Just think how Ireland today is managed. Greece, for that matter. euronews U talk - European Union: think positive
www.euronews.com In this edition of U-talk, Jacqueline from the Netherlands asks: "Because of all the issues that are out there now: the euro is one of them, immigration is another, it seems that all the blame and negative criticisms basically falls on Europe and the European process. I think it's a real shame and I would like to know why it seems that nobody is able to do a better job at marketing what Europe has achieved in a better way?" Grégory Vanel, Professor at the European Advanced Institute of Management, Lyon responds: "Hello Jacqueline, it's true that the institutions of the European Union have found it difficult to publicise the success the EU has had, beyond the traditional peaceful relations between France and Germany. I mean, think about the Airbus, food self-sufficiency, the Erasmus program with its university cooperation; so this isn't a new problem, in fact it's linked, in my view, to a number of things that are very difficult to resolve. "In particular, we have huge institutional complexities: it's very difficult for a layperson to navigate between European Parliament, the European Commission, the EU Council and European Council. "Then there is a democratic deficit that's been growing since the failure of the proposed European Constitutional Treaty in 2005 and that raises a number of problems, particularly in countries like France or Hungary for example, where you have extremely powerful sovereigntist movements. "Moreover, the EU sometimes suffers ...

Country number four, Spain, gets bailed out and we all of course know that it won't be the last. And I thought, well, having listened to him over the previous couple of weeks telling us that there would not be a bailout, I got the feeling after all his twists and turns he's just about the most incompetent leader in the whole of Europe, and that's saying something, because there is pretty stiff competition. Indeed, every single prediction of yours, Mr Barroso, has been wrong, and dear old Herman Van Rompuy, well he's done a runner hasn't he. Because the last time he was here, he told us we had turned the corner, that the euro crisis was over and he hasn't bothered to come back and see us. Nigel Farage on the Failings of the EU Summit and an Antidemocratic Europe
Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. European Leaders hold the umpteenth EU summit to try and save the monetary union and the Eurozone. This meeting has been deemed by some in the media as crucial, but is it really? Not a chance, according to our guest Nigel Farage, leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and member of European Parliament. It's more of the same "can kicking." And fingers point at Germany to save Europe, but the core isn't immune to the problems of the Eurozone. New figures show that the number of people out of work is creeping up in Germany, up by seven thousand in June. And a poll shows support for the Euro may be fracturing in the core, the very part of Europe that is holding the entire continent together. Will Angela Merkel eventually buckle to the will of her electorate, or will she do the bidding of her "European partners?" We'll look at how this impacts the EU summit, and recent attempts to quell this European crisis. And the Supreme Court upholds the healthcare law, otherwise known as Obamacare, advocated for by the current administration. According to the US president, this was a victory for the American people. But what is the market telling us? Lauren and Demetri will give you their take on today's "Loose Change."

The Dead Hand of Bureaucracy - Nigel Farage (Second-round speech, 21.11.2012)

It's the status quo convincing itself that it is doing a good job despite the fact that the public increasingly doubt you. I would remind you that every time that taxpayers' money is thrown at common European projects the results are less than a success: the Common Fisheries Policy and its environmental degradation and now of course the Euro - and not just an economic, but a social disaster that is engulfing the Mediterranean. And it's all based on a flawed thinking that the State if it has power and money, can create wealth. The dead hand of bureaucracy is destroying innovation and destroying jobs in Europe. National democracy and free markets would be a much better model. .................................. • Video: EbS (European Parliament) .................................. • EU ...

As The Rolling Stones might say "The 19th Nervous Breakdown." And that's reflected I think by the funereal mood in the chamber this morning. Yes on that Friday morning, "breakthrough" was cried, and indeed Mr Van Rompuy parroted the word this morning, "breakthrough". Nobody believes you, the wheels are coming off. This new European Stability Mechanism, your new bailout vehicle is doomed before it starts. We have legal challenges in Ireland and in Germany. We have the Estonian Justice Minister saying it won't fit their Constitution. But most fun of all, the Finns and the Dutch seem to have broken the agreement that was made in the middle of the night. Perhaps they were excluded from this, perhaps the little countries don't have a say in Europe at all anymore. It's not credible, and I think the euro crisis now looks to me to be, frankly, insoluble.
