Trip to Toyama Prefecture
For the "Golden Week" holidays we went to the Japanese Alps in Toyama. We took a sightseeing train through Kurobe Gorge and also an underground trolley, a cable car, and a bus to the top of Tateyama Mountain, and a ropeway on the way down to Kurobe Dam. We dipped our feet in warm water at a hot spring right by the river in Kanetsuri at the end of the Toroko train ride . We stayed at a "business hotel" in Toyama City. It was a 2-day trip by bus from Nagoya which takes about 5 hours each way. The tour included a "bento box" lunch on the bus, an all-you-can-eat steak dinner (the steaks were slow in coming), and an-all-you-can-eat onigiri (rice balls) breakfast.

Snowboarding at Taira in Toyama Prefecture
Jamie Cryan and James Miller "goofing around" before a snow storm total whiteouts the mountain to the tune of several meters. Incidently, Taira was great snowboarding on the Japan sea side at least from 93-97. Short drive from Kanazawa and much better than Chugu or the others in the Hakusan (Ishikawa) area. There was no pipe but the backcountry was fun. Thinking back to it now it was not a big mountain at all but it was always empty.. and cheap. I hear recently it's become very crowded. It's on it's way up to the Tateyama national park, which you can hit until late August. There are several nice bowls at the peak which are fun for one-makes. There was one bowl that had a great run leadup which was almost a full bowl. One year a friend did a McTwist of the bowl and biff'ed the landing and put his lower teeth threw his lower lip. He bleed all the way down the mountain. We was not in good shape... I got so sunburned that day, and snowblind. But we did go surfing and skateboarding the next day. Jamie on the otherhand was such a lobster he was off from work for days.. Ah.. the days of our youth..
