5 Reasons why Abuja Is A Great City.
Abuja is the capital and eighth most populous city in Nigeria. Located in the centre of the country within the Federal Capital Territory, it is a planned city built mainly in the 1980s based on a master plan by Japanese architect KenzoTange. It replaced Lagos, the country's most populous city, as the capital on December 12, 1991.
As of 2022, the city is experiencing an annual growth of at least 35%, retaining its position as the fastest-growing city on the African continent and one of the fastest-growing in the world. As of 2022, the metropolitan area of Abuja is estimated at six million people, placing it behind only Lagos as the most populous metro area in Nigeria.

Abuja is the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the regional headquarters of OPEC.
1. It's organized
The master plan for Abuja defined the general structure and major design elements of the city that are now visible. More detailed design of the central areas of the capital, particularly its monumental core, was accomplished by Japanese architect KenzoTange. What I like about Abuja is that most of the buildings are very beautiful and modern looking. I think it's because most of them have been built recently. When I look at Abuja, I see a model city of what every African city should aspire to be; one that is clean, modern, and well organized.
2. Great roads.
As a foreigner, I have to acknowledge that Abuja has some of the best roads I have seen in Africa. They are well marked, and not once have I seen any potholes. The city is well connected, and if you own a car, it will be a pleasure to drive around as there are no traffic jams. Abuja is linked to Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue and Northeast Nigeria by the A234 Federal Highway, which starts from the city as the Goodluck Jonathan expressway, some portions of which are still under construction. A direct highway link to Minna in Niger State is still under construction. The A2 expressway links Abuja with Kaduna in the north and Lokoja in the south. There are also other highway links with the outlying regions, such as that linking the suburb of DutseAlhaji with the Lower Usuma and Gurara Dams, which supply water to the city.
3. Warm Weather
I guess Abuja has better weather than Lagos. It can get hot sometimes, but most of the time, the weather is very tolerable and comfortable. In the dry season, daytime temperatures can soar to as high as 40 °C and nighttime temperatures can dip to 12 °C Even the chilliest nights can be followed by daytime temperatures well above 30 °C. The high altitudes and undulating terrain act as a moderating influence on the weather of the territory.
4. It's clean.
Abuja is also one of the cleanest cities in Africa and definitely one of the cleanest in Nigeria. You cannot compare it to Lagos. The areas around the CBD are spotlessly clean. However, the satellite towns cropping up around the city are eroding this reputation, but efforts are being made to clear them. In most of Abuja, you will not see litter on the streets or the numerous shack shops that are an eyesore in most African cities. The sidewalks are clean and I can imagine it would be a pleasure for the pedestrians. Kudos Abuja.
5. Full of Attractions.
Abuja is home to several parks and green areas, with the largest one being Millennium Park. Another open area park is located in LifecampGwarimpa, near the residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The park is located on a slightly raised hilltop that contains sports facilities like basketball and badminton courts. Central Park Enjoy a grand time alone or with your family in this 500-acre (202.3-hectare) park, situated in the heart of Abuja. From picnics at the green spots to hiking, the outdoor fans will love it at Usuma Lower Dam, located in the UshafaBwari Area, some minutes’ drive from the capital. It is the fifth-largest human-made lake globally, and it boasts the biggest hydropower plant in West Africa, which serves the metropolis with electricity and water.
Nigeria's Magical Park is Nigeria’s Disneyland and the first and largest amusement park in the country. Whether you’re a Muslim faithful or not, seeing the elegant Nigerian National Mosque, situated on Independence Avenue, is a must. The natural scene combined with urbanization makes the Jabi Lake area, close to the city’s center, a beauty to behold.
Other places you can enjoy visiting in Abuja are the Abuja National Mosque, Jabi Lake Mall, Bature Brewery, Jabi Lake, Millennium Park and many others.

The creation of Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, stands as a testament to African ingenuity, ambition, and a desire for self-determination. In this video I show you Nigeria's capital city Abuja like never seen before. From the central business districts to the mixed commercial areas. Then later in the video we visit the 2 most popular neighborhoods in Abuja.
From its conception in the 1970s to its realization as a bustling metropolis, Abuja exemplifies the aspirations of a nation striving for excellence. Prior to Abuja's emergence, Nigeria's capital was Lagos, a city situated on the country's southwestern coast.
Abuja's strategic location in the heart of Nigeria was carefully chosen to symbolize national unity and cohesion. Situated at the geographic center of the country, Abuja serves as a symbolic bridge connecting Nigeria's various ethnic, cultural, and geographical regions. This central positioning underscores the government's commitment to fostering inclusivity and representation for all Nigerians, regardless of their background or location.
The planning and construction of Abuja were meticulous and comprehensive, reflecting a commitment to excellence and modern urban development. Nigerian planners and architects collaborated with international experts to design a city that would meet the needs of a growing population while also embodying the aspirations of a nation on the rise. The result is a city characterized by wide boulevards, green spaces, modern infrastructure, and iconic landmarks.
One of the most striking aspects of Abuja's development is its distinctly African character. Unlike some capital cities in Africa that bear the imprint of colonial influence in their architecture and layout, Abuja's design reflects indigenous Nigerian aesthetics and cultural heritage. From the sprawling National Mosque to the imposing Aso Rock, Abuja's landmarks pay homage to Nigeria's rich history and traditions while embracing the promise of the future.
Abuja's emergence as a cosmopolitan hub has not been without challenges. Rapid urbanization, infrastructure development, and social integration have presented ongoing complexities for city planners and policymakers. Nevertheless, Abuja continues to evolve and adapt, driven by the resilience and determination of its residents and leaders.
The Central Business District of Abuja represent the economic, political, and administrative heart of Nigeria's capital city. Situated at the core of Abuja, this district serve as vital hubs for commerce, governance, and civic life, embodying the city's aspirations for modernity and efficiency.
The Abuja is characterized by its impressive skyline, modern architecture, and bustling commercial activity. It is home to a myriad of businesses, including corporate headquarters, financial institutions, government offices, hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments. Abuja's layout is carefully planned, with wide avenues, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, and green spaces interspersed throughout the urban landscape.
Abuja is home to important government institutions, including the Federal Secretariat Complex, which houses various ministries, agencies, and departments of the Nigerian government.
The planning and development of the CBD and Administrative District reflect a commitment to efficient urban design, accessibility, and functionality. Infrastructure such as roads, transportation networks, utilities, and telecommunications are carefully integrated to support the needs of businesses, government institutions, residents, and visitors alike.
Abuja serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for other African nations seeking to assert their identity and aspirations on the global stage. Its success underscores the potential for African countries to chart their own course toward progress and prosperity, free from the constraints of colonial legacies.
The Maitama neighborhood, located in close proximity to Abuja's central district, is renowned for its opulence, luxury, and exclusivity. This upscale residential area is home to some of Africa's wealthiest individuals, including politicians, business tycoons, and diplomats. Often referred to as a haven for the elite, Maitama boasts lavish mansions, high-end apartments, and gated communities, offering a lifestyle of privilege and sophistication.
Maitama's reputation as a sanctuary for the wealthy has not been without controversy. Critics argue that the concentration of wealth and privilege in neighborhoods like Maitama exacerbates socioeconomic inequalities and widens the gap between the rich and the poor. Moreover, there have been allegations of corruption and illicit wealth accumulation among some of Maitama's residents, raising questions about accountability and transparency in Nigeria's political elite.

STORYLINE:
Britain and Nigeria enjoyed some friendly banter at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Malta on Saturday, as the right to stage the Commonwealth Games in 2014 was discussed.
The light-hearted encounter came at a sports breakfast hosted for Commonwealth leaders, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Nigeria's President, Olusegun Obasanjo.
Blair wants the Games to be held in the Scottish city of Glasgow. Obasanjo is backing the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
Canada has also entered the race.
Promoting Abuja's bid, Obasanjo won applause by recalling the memory of Lord Lugard, a Scottish colonial ruler who helped to unify Nigeria under British rule a century ago.
He said the best way for Glasgow to honour such a great Scotsman was to withdraw its bid and support Nigeria's instead.
Blair replied, arguing that it was time for Nigerians to come to Scotland, rather than the other way round.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister John Howard promoted the 2006 Commonwealth Games to be held in Melbourne, Australia in March.
He said the Games "will be a wonderful endorsement of the way in which sport binds the Commonwealth, as well as the nations of the world, together."

The cities of Glasgow in Scotland and Abuja of Nigeria are the only cities bidding for the Games, which will be decided by the 71 Commonwealth member states in Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo.
The winning city is expected to be announced at 1130 GMT in the ballroom of Colombo's Cinnamon Grand Hotel after final presentations.
On Thursday General Yakubu Gowon, Abuja's bid chairman and Nigeria's military ruler between 1967 to 1975, said his country is capable of hosting one of the biggest sporting events despite the adverse evaluation of its bid by a four-member
team in September.
The evaluation report found fault with Abuja's plans for budgeting, transport, legacy, marketing and venues.
But Gowon said that Nigeria will use its experience of hosting two African games and will be supported by its neighbours to have a successful games.
Africa is the only region in the Commonwealth, the body composed of former members of the British Empire, not to have hosted the games.
Scotland hosted the games in 1970 and 1986 in Edinburgh.

An official invitation was sent from Scotland especially for the Commonwealth Games 2014 that was held in Glasgow, Scotland.
A bagpiper comes performing the tunes of Scotland followed by a large group of men and women of Scotland who lifts the bagpiper up. Music and dances are performed exhibiting a large S sign sending off an invitation just to welcome at the Commonwealth games 2014. Ex-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh applauses when the performance ends cheering the initiative of Scotland.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games , officially known as the XX Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Glasgow 2014, (Scottish Gaelic: Glaschu 2014), was an international multi-sport event celebrated in the tradition of the Commonwealth Games as governed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). It took place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014.
Glasgow was selected as the host city on 9 November 2007 during CGF General Assembly in Colombo, Sri Lanka, defeating Abuja, Nigeria. It was the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland with around 4,950 athletes from 71 different nations and territories competing in 18 different sports, outranking the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. Over the last 10 years, however, Glasgow and Scotland had staged World, Commonwealth, European, or British events in all sports proposed for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, including the World Badminton Championships in 1997.
The Games received acclaim for their organisation, attendance, and the public enthusiasm of the people of Scotland, with CGF chief executive Mike Hooper hailing them as "the standout games in the history of the movement". Held in Scotland for the third time, the Games were notable for the successes of the Home Nations of the United Kingdom, with England, Wales and hosts Scotland achieving their largest ever gold medal hauls and overall medal hauls at a Commonwealth Games.England finished top of the medal table for the first time since the 1986 Commonwealth Games, also held in Scotland. Kiribati also won its first ever medal at a Commonwealth Games, a gold in the 105 kg men's weightlifting competition.

Held in Scotland for the third time, the Games were notable for the successes of the Home Nations of the United Kingdom, with England, Wales and hosts Scotland achieving their largest ever gold medal hauls and overall medal hauls at a Commonwealth Games. England finished top of the medal table for the first time since the 1986 Commonwealth Games, also held in Scotland. Kiribati also won its first ever medal at a Commonwealth Games, a gold in the 105 kg men's weightlifting competition.

But the problems we've been wrestling with have been - and the whole of the world has been wrestling with as far as Zimbabwe is concerned - are in Zimbabwe and it will be those that will be under consideration at Abuja and we're very grateful in deed to the President of Nigeria for arranging this meeting and for also making sure the agenda is an open one."

STORYLINE:
Zimbabwe will be allowed to attend next month's Commonwealth summit in Australia, despite concerns about the the political situation there.
Concluding a two-day meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) in London on Tuesday, ministers voiced their concerns that the situation under President Robert Mugabe hadn't improved.
Reading from a prepared statement, Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon said Commonwealth ministers would continue to discuss Zimbabwe at a specially convened meeting later this week in Nigeria.
Developments would be reviewed at a final meeting immediately prior to the heads of government meeting on October 5 in Australia.
Unlike Pakistan, barred from attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Brisbane, the African nation will be allowed to attend, although only after two further meetings to review the violence that's blighting the former British colony.
The British Foreign Minister Jack Straw said Zimbabwe's problems stem from inside Zimbabwe itself.

STORYLINE:
There was word of a breakthrough late on Thursday in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, where Britain and other Commonwealth countries have been pushing for a resolution to Zimbabwe's land crisis.
The breakthrough is said to involve Commonwealth countries funding Zimbabwe's land-redistribution programme for white-owned farms.
Zimbabwe in exchange would agree to reforms of its own.
These will include reforms to the election process and the monitoring of elections - according to a participant in the negotiations, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Questioned about talk of a breakthrough Nigeria Foreign Minister Sule Lamidowould say only that he entered the talks dreaming of "a very positive agreement."
Asked if his dream had been met, Lamido said, "Oh, absolutely."
An announcement with details was expected later on Thursday.
Ministers credited Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo with pushing the proposal, which he was quoted as calling an African solution to an African problem.
Nigeria has been urging for action to avert a "racial war" in Zimbabwe.

Despite the popular success of the previous 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, the 1986 Games are remembered with considerable notoriety due to a large political boycott and financial mismanagement.
The Games were boycotted by a majority of countries, largely African, Asian and Caribbean states, and making it appear as a whites-only event. Of the 59 eligible countries, 32 boycotted the Games due to the Thatcher government's attitude towards British sporting links with apartheid-era South Africa as opposed to the sporting boycott of South Africa. It resulted in the lowest number of athletes since the 1950 Commonwealth Games.
Further controversy came about when it was revealed that due to the lack of participation and associated decline in anticipated broadcasting and sponsorship revenues, the Organising Committee was facing a serious financial black hole, and the boycott ended any prospect of securing emergency government assistance.
Businessman Robert Maxwell stepped in to offer funding, taking over as chairman, but despite promising to invest £2m, Maxwell's contribution was just £250,000. On a budget of £14m, the Games opened with a deficit of £3m, which later grew to £4.3m, and instead of putting enough money into the event to save it, the new chairman of the Games asked creditors to forgo half the payment due to them to keep the event out of liquidation. The debt was finally paid off in 1989, with the city of Edinburgh losing approximately £500,000.
Several participants were excluded because they breached the amateurism rules, most notably lawn bowlers Phil Skoglund from New Zealand and Willie Wood from Scotland, both of whom have competed in subsequent games.
Scotland is one of only six countries to have competed in every Commonwealth Games since the first Empire Games in 1930. The others are Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand and Wales.
The Commonwealth Games is the only major multi-sport event in which Scottish athletes and teams compete as Scotland; otherwise Scotland participates in multi-sport events as part of a Great Britain team.
Scotland has hosted the Commonwealth Games twice, both in Edinburgh; in 1970 and 1986. Glasgow will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games between the 23rd of July and the 3rd of August 2014. The inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh in 2000.
Scotland sent a team of 207 athletes and 85 officials to the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, and won 30 medals (6 Gold, 8 Silver and 16 Bronze).
After the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, Scotland was seventh in the all-time tally of medals, with an overall total of 329 medals (82 Gold, 94 Silver and 153 Bronze).
Scotland's most successful Commonwealth medallist is shooter Alister Allan, with 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze medals from 1974 to 1994. Other successful medallists include athlete Allan Wells (a total of 4 Gold, 1 Silver & 1 Bronze in two Games - 1978 & 1982) and Peter Heatly (diving Gold's in three successive Games & 1 Silver & 1 Bronze - 1950, 1954 & 1958).
Lawn bowler Willie Wood is the first competitor to have competed in seven Commonwealth Games, from 1974 to 2002, missing 1986 because of a dispute over amateurism.
Scotland was the first country to consider hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games in 2004, with Scottish cities being invited by the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland to consider making a bid. In September 2004, Glasgow was announced as the Scottish candidate city over Edinburgh (which hosted the Games in 1970 and 1986, and the inauguralCommonwealth Youth Games in 2000) following a cost-benefit analysis by the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland.
The Scottish Executive under then First Minister of Scotland, Jack McConnell, with the support of the United Kingdom government and all main parties in the Scottish Parliament, formally announced Glasgow's intention to host the games on 16 August 2005.
In March 2006, the bidding process began, with the Glasgow Bid team presenting their case to the Commonwealth Games Federation at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, along with the other confirmed candidate cities; the Nigerian capital, Abuja and Halifax in Canada. In October 2006, the first voting delegates arrived in Glasgow, to inspect the city's existing and proposed amenities and facilities. Glasgow announced on 16 January 2007, the 17 sports to be included should its bid be successful.
