An interview in Arabic language with Adiba Romero, a Spanish researcher who talks about the Moriscos in Spain's past and present, and how they recently discovered their origins. A Morisco (in Spanish) or Mourisco (in Portuguese), meaning "Moor-like", was a converted (converso) Catholic inhabitant of Spain and Portugal of Muslim heritage. Over time the term was used in a pejorative sense applied to those nominal converso Catholics who were suspected of secretly practicing Islam (crypto-Muslim). In the medieval period al-Andalus Muslims who had come under Iberian Christian rule, as a result of the incremental Reconquista, were known as Mudéjars. There was a tolerance with discrimination, although with treatment as inferiors from Catholic authorities. The victory of the Catholic Monarchs in the Battle of Granada in 1492 ended the last Islamic rule and al-Andalus territory on the Iberian peninsula. The pre-established Treaty of Granada (1491) guaranteed religious and cultural freedoms for Muslims and Jews in the imminent transition from Emirate of Granada to Province of Castile. The Alhambra Decree (1492) promptly rescinded the Jews' rights, expelling both the observant and the conversos suspected of secretly practicing Judaism (crypto-Judaism) called Marranos. The Decree set a precedent for upcoming persecution and later expulsion of Muslims and Moriscos. Moriscos: en.wikipedia.org

TESIS - MORISCOS

SIGNORSI' ROSARIO MORISCO (Videoclip) sanremo 2008
Signorsì Sissignore, io sto tornando e non so come andrà a finire.

Blanca, the last morisco village in Spain.wmv
Blanca was the last and most important Morisco village in Spain in 1613. All the Moriscoes had to leave the country in 1609. The residents of Blanca, one of the six villages that belonged to the Ricote Valley, could postpone the expulsion until 1613. However, at the end of the year 1613 the sad announcement came that the Moriscoes of the Ricote Valley also had to leave the country. This was finally the case on December 13, 1613. About 75% of the population of 1000 inhabitants went on foot to the port of Cartagena, where the Moriscoes had to be embarked. A small portion of the 1000 inhabitants had escaped and withdrawn in the high mountains of Ricote. After 10 - 15 years, many came back. Finally around 45% of the former inhabitants of Blanca and the Ricote Valley could continue staying in their territories. These people married in the course of time with the Christians, and today Blanca is one of the most pious villages in the province of Murcia. This movie shows you the old Morisco neighborhood and the small winding streets that ran to the castle, and the very old houses of centuries ago.
