Mumbai /mʊmˈbaɪ/, also known as Bombay /bɒmˈbeɪ/, is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, and the fourth most populous city in the world, with a total metropolitan area population of approximately 20.5 million. Along with the neighbouring urban areas, including the cities of Navi Mumbai and Thane, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2009, Mumbai was named an Alpha world city. Mumbai is also the richest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West or Central Asia.
The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies. For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the Portuguese and subsequently to the British East India Company. During the mid-18th century, Mumbai was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook the reclamation of the area between the seven constituent islands from the sea. Completed by 1845, the project along with construction of major roads and railways transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Economic and educational development characterised the city during the 19th century. It became a strong base for the Indian independence movement during the early 20th century. When India became independent in 1947, the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as capital. The city was renamed Mumbai in 1996.

Amitabh Bachchan ([əmɪtaːbʱ bəttʃən] (
listen), born Amitabh Harivansh Bachchan on 11 October 1942) is an Indian film actor. He first gained popularity in the early 1970s as the "angry young man" of Hindi cinema, and has since appeared in over 180 Indian films in a career spanning more than four decades. Bachchan is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema.
Bachchan has won numerous major awards in his career, including three National Film Awards as Best Actor, and fourteen Filmfare Awards. He is the most-nominated performer in any major acting category at Filmfare, with 37 nominations overall. In addition to acting, Bachchan has worked as a playback singer, film producer and television presenter. He also had a stint in politics in the 1980s. He has received both the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan civilian awards from the Indian government.
Bachban was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a Hindi poet, and his mother, Teji Bachchan, was a Sikh from Faisalabad (now in Pakistan). Bachchan was initially named Inquilaab, inspired from the famous phrase Inquilab Zindabad, during the Indian independence struggle. However, at the suggestion of fellow poet Sumitranandan Pant, Harivansh Rai changed the name to Amitabh which means, "the light that would never go off." Though his surname was Shrivastava, his father had adopted the pen-name Bachchan (meaning child-like in colloquial Hindi), under which he published all his works. It is with this last name that Amitabh debuted in films, and, for all public purposes, it has become the surname of all members of his family. Bachchan's father died in 2003, and his mother in 2007.

Amrita was born to a Sikh-Muslim family. She is the daughter Rukhsana Sultana, who was a political activist and Shavinder Singh, who was an army officer.
Through her mother, she is a relative of actors Begum Para and Ayub Khan, as well as Mian Ehsan Ul Haque, who came from a landowning family. He was a judge and the Chief Justice of the highest court in the princely state of Bikaner, northern Rajasthan. Through her father, she is a relative of novelist Khushwant Singh and businessman Sir Sobha Singh of Lahore.
She attended Modern School in New Delhi and is fluent in the English, Punjabi and Hindi languages.
Amrita made her Bollywood debut in 1983 with Betaab, a vastly successful film in which she was paired with Sunny Deol. This was quickly followed by a succession of hits, such as: Sunny in 1984, Mard (which was the biggest hit of that year) and Saaheb in 1985, Chameli Ki Shaadi and Naam in 1986, Khudgarz in 1987, etc. Amrita made a successful pair in several films not only with Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt, but also with Anil Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan, two leading actors of the 1980s.

Asha Bhosle
Asha Bhosle (born September 8, 1933) is an Indian singer. She is best-known as a playback singer in Hindi cinema, although she has a wider repertoire. Bhosle's career started in 1943 and has spanned over six decades. She has done playback singing for over a thousand Bollywood movies. In addition, she has recorded several private albums and participated in numerous solo concerts in India and abroad. Bhosle is the sister of playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Renowned for her voice range and often credited for her versatility, Bhosle's work includes film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, and Rabindra Sangeets. Apart from Hindi, she has sung in over 20 Indian and foreign languages. In 2006, Asha Bhosle stated that she had sung over 12,000 songs, a figure repeated by several other sources. The World Records Academy, an international organization which certifies world records, recognised her as the "Most Recorded Artist" in the world, in September 2009. Asha Parekh was born into a middle-class Gujarati family on 2 October 1942 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India to a Hindu father who was from Paldi near Pirana, Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Muslim mother, and her religious upbringing involved worshipping Sai Baba. Her mother enrolled her in Indian classical dance classes at an early age.
Parekh started her career as a child artist under the screen name Baby Asha Parekh in the film Aasmaan (1952). Famed film director Bimal Roy saw her dance at a stage function and cast her at the age of twelve in Baap Beti (1954). The film's failure disappointed her and even though she did a couple more child roles, she quit to resume her schooling. At sixteen she decided to try acting again and make her debut as a heroine, but she was rejected from Vijay Bhatt's Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959) in favour of actress Ameeta, because the filmmaker claimed she was not star material. The very next day, film producer Subodh Mukherjee and writer-director Nasir Hussain cast her as the heroine in Dil Deke Dekho (1959) opposite Shammi Kapoor which made her a huge star.

Asha was an alumna of the Pune Film Institute and joined Bollywood with the passion to make it as a leading lady. She began her career in a low-budget film Double Cross in 1972 wherein she played a bold and dynamic role. Somehow the image stuck and thereafter she was offered only supporting and bold characters. Her bare dare appearance in red hot pants in the Navin Nishchol-Rekha star thriller Woh Main Nahin (1974) created a storm and she was flooded with item dance offers and vamp roles.[citation needed]
She won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her role as Neetu Singh's best friend in Priyatama in 1978. She won the award for a role which was totally deglamorised wherein she wore a simple saree and was bespectacled throughout the film. Some of her notable films are Satte Pe Satta, Duniya meri jeb mein, Judaai, Premrog etc.
She was seen playing character roles in films like Fiza, Aghaaz, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom & Aaja Nachle. In spite of her transition into a character actor, today Asha is still remembered for her bold and daring image of 70s and 80s.[citation needed]

Ashok Kumar
Ashok Kumar ( Bengali অশোক কুমার গাঙ্গুলী, 13 October 1911 – 10 December 2001) also fondly called Dadamoni in Bengali, was an Indian film actor. Born Kumudlal Ganguly in Bhagalpur, Bengal Presidency he attained iconic status in Indian cinema. The Government of India honoured him with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan in 1998 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
His father Kunjalal Ganguly was a lawyer and his mother Gouri Devi came from a wealthy Bengali Kulin Brahmin family. The "Ganguly family" was based in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. His brothers Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar also acted in films. The three brothers worked together in the comedies Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi. Ashok, though the eldest of the three by quite a margin, survived them both. In fact, he stopped celebrating his birthday after the youngest brother, Kishore, died on that day in 1987. His sister, Sati Devi, was married to Sashadhar Mukherjee of the Mukherjee-Samarth family.
Ashok Kumar married Shobha. They had a troubled marriage due to his wife being an alcoholic. His daughter, Preeti Ganguly acted in numerous Hindi film, during 1970s, later she started the 'Ashok Kumar's Academy of Dramatic Arts', Mumbai in 1993. His other daughter, Rupa Ganguly and son Arun Ganguly never joined films, Rupa is married to actor Deven Verma

Ayesha Kapur
Ayesha Kapur (Hindi: अयेशा कपूर, Urdu: اَیّشا کپُور), born 13 September 1994 in India, is an award winning Indian film actress who is best known for playing young Michelle McNally in the Bollywood movie Black. Kapur received unanimous praise for the role, and quickly became the recipient of many Awards in the "Best Supporting Actress" category. In doing so, she became the second youngest (behind Darsheel Safary) person to be both nominated and win a Filmfare Award and is currently the youngest person ever to win a Zee Cine Award and an IIFA Award. Bhanu Athaiya
Bhanu Athaiya née Rajopadhye (Marathi: भानु अथैय्या) (born 28 April 1926) is Indian cinema's most well-regarded costume designer, having worked in over 100 films, since 1950s, with noted filmmakers like Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra, Raj Kapoor, Ashutosh Gowariker, and international directors like Conrad Rooks and Richard Attenborough.
She made her debut as a film costume designer with the film C.I.D. in 1956, and followed it up with other Guru Dutt classics like Pyaasa (1959), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1964). In her career spanning 50 year she has received numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Costume Design , for her work in 1982 film, Gandhi, which made her the first Indian to win an Oscar or Academy Award, and also two National Film Awards, in 1991 and 2002.
On 23 February, 2012 it was reported that she wish to return her Oscar trophy to American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as she feels that Indian government will not be able to take care of trophy after her demise.

Dharam Dev Pishorimal Anand (26 September 1923 – 3 December 2011), better known as Dev Anand, was an Indian film actor, writer, director and producer known for his work in Hindi cinema. Part of the Anand family, he co-founded Navketan Films in 1949 with his elder brother Chetan Anand.
The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contribution to Indian cinema. His career spanned more than 65 years with acting in 114 Hindi films of which 109 have him play the main solo lead hero and he did 2 English films.
Dev was born Dharam Dev Pishorimal Anand on 26 September 1923 in the Shakargarh tehsil of the Gurdaspur district in Punjab (British India) (present-day Narowal district of Pakistan). His father Pishori Lal Anand was a well-to-do advocate. Dev was the third of four sons born to Pishori Lal Anand. One of Dev's younger sister is Sheela Kanta Kapur, who is mother of Shekhar Kapur. His older brothers were Manmohan Anand (Advocate, Gurdaspur Dist. Court) and Chetan Anand and younger one was Vijay Anand. Dev Anand spent his early years in Gharota village near Gurdaspur, Gurdaspur town. He did his schooling till matriculation from Sacred Heart School, Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh (then in Punjab) and went to college Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh before going to Lahore to study. Later Dev completed his graduation in English Literature from the Government College, Lahore in British India.

He was one of the lead actors of the all-time blockbuster Sholay (1975), and went on to star in numerous successful Bollywood films across five decades. Dilip Kumar
Dilip Kumar, born Muhammad Yusuf Khan on 11 December 1922, is an Indian actor and a former Member of Parliament. He is commonly known as "Tragedy King", and is described as "the ultimate method actor" by Satyajit Ray.
Starting his career with Jwar Bhata in 1944, Kumar's career has spanned five decades and over 60 films. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest actors in the history of Hindi cinema. Kumar was the first actor to receive a Filmfare Best Actor Award and holds the record for the most number of Filmfare Awards won for that category with Shahrukh Khan; eight wins. He starred in films of a variety of genres such as the romantic Andaz (1949), the swashbuckling Aan (1952), the dramatic Devdas (1955), the comical Azaad (1955), the historical Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and the social Ganga Jamuna (1961).
In 1976, Kumar took a five-year break from film performances. In 1981, he returned with a character role in the film Kranti and continued his career playing central character roles in films such as Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). His last film was Qila in 1998. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. Dilip Kumar has acted with actress Vyjayanthimala the most, where they both had acted seven films together including the former's home production Gunga Jumna resulting great on-screen chemistry and alleged affair between them.

Dimple Kapadia
Dimple Chunnibhai Kapadia (born 8 June 1957) is an Indian film actress. She made her acting debut at the age of 16, playing the title role in Raj Kapoor's teen romance Bobby (1973). In that same year she married Indian actor Rajesh Khanna, and retired from acting. Kapadia returned to the film industry in 1984 after her separation from Khanna. One of her films of that period include the drama Saagar (1985). Both films won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Regarded as a sex symbol, Kapadia was keen to avoid being stereotyped and expand her range of acting roles. She subsequently took on more serious parts in parallel films and received acclaim for her performances in such films as Kaash (1987), Drishti (1990), Lekin... (1990), and Rudaali (1993), which earned her a National Film Award for Best Actress and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. She followed with supporting roles in Gardish (1993) and Krantiveer (1994), the latter of which garnered her a fourth Filmfare Award.
Kapadia continued working infrequently through the 1990s and the 2000s. She played a minor part in Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and was noted for her portrayal of the title role in the American production Leela (2002). Some of her later film credits include leading roles in Hum Kaun Hai? Durga Khote
Durga Khote (January 14, 1905−September 22, 1991) was an Indian actress, starting as one of the foremost leading ladies of her times, she remained active in Hindi and Marathi cinema, as well as theatre, for over 50 years, starring in around 200 films and numerous theatre productions.
In 2000, in a millennium issue, India Today named her among "100 People Who Shaped India," as it noted that, "Durga Khote marks the pioneering phase for woman in Indian Cinema" as she was one of the first women from respectable families to enter the film industry thus breaking a social taboo.
She also ranks amongst top ten actresses in mother roles in Hindi cinema, most notable among them were as Jodhabai in K. Farida Jalal
Farida Tabrez Barmavar née Jalal (born 14 March 1949) is an Indian actress.
Farida Jalal, a native of New Delhi, started her career in the 1960s, when she won the United Film Producers Talent Hunt sponsored by Filmfare. She usually played the sister or rejected fiancée of the male lead but almost never the female lead. One of her most critically acclaimed roles is in Bobby where she played the part of the mentally challenged would-be fiancée of Rishi Kapoor's Raj. During the 1980s, her roles progressed from sister and girlfriend to aunt, mother, or nani. She is also remembered for her part in Aradhana, in which she plays Rajesh Khanna's girlfriend, and sings the song "Bagon me bahar hai, kaliyon pe nikhar hai".
She acted for over 40 years, only taking a break during 1983 and 1990, when she settled in Bangalore.
During the 1990s, Jalal had a part in many major hits in India, among them Raja Hindustani, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, for which she won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Feroz Khan (Hindi: फ़िरोज़ ख़ान, Urdu: فیروزخان September 25, 1939 – 27 April 2009) was an Indian actor, film editor, producer and director in the Hindi film industry. For his flamboyant style, with cowboyish swagger and cigar toting persona which revolutionised the style quotient of the otherwise conventional Filmi hero, he is known as the Clint Eastwood of the East and a style icon in the industry.
He appeared in over 50 films in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and became one of India's best-loved heroes with his role in the 1980 hit film Qurbani, which he also directed. Khan followed this multi-disciplinary achievement by directing more successful films like Dayavan (1988) and Janbaaz (1986). He won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Aadmi Aur Insaan in 1970, and was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.
Khan was born in the Indian city of Bangalore on September 25, 1939, but his roots are traced to Afghanistan. His father was Sadiq Ali Khan Tanoli and his mother was Iranian. He was educated in Bishop Cotton Boys' School, Bangalore and St. Germain's Boys High School, Bangalore. His brothers are Sanjay Khan (Abbas Khan), Shahrukh Shah Ali Khan, Sameer Khan and Akbar Khan (director). He has a sister Dilshad Bibi. After his schooling in Bangalore, he arrived in Mumbai where he made his debut as second lead in Didi in 1960.

Sampooran Singh Kalra (born 18 August 1936), known popularly by his pen name Gulzar, is an Indian poet, lyricist and director. He primarily writes in Hindi-Urdu and has also written in Punjabi and several dialects of Hindi such as Braj Bhasha, Khariboli, Haryanvi and Marwari.
Gulzar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2004 for his contribution to the arts and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. He has won a number of National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards. In 2009, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Jai Ho" in the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008). On 31 January 2010, the same song won him a Grammy Award in the category of Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
Gulzar's poetry is partly published in three compilations: Chand Pukhraaj Ka, Raat Pashminey Ki and Pandrah Paanch Pachattar (15-05-75). His short stories are published in Raavi-paar (also known as Dustkhat in Pakistan) and Dhuan (smoke).
As a lyricist, Gulzar is best known for his association with the music directors Rahul Dev Burman, A. R. Rahman and Vishal Bhardwaj. He has also worked with other leading Bollywood music directors including Sachin Dev Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Shankar Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, Rajesh Roshan and Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. Along with lyrics, he has also contributed in many films as script, story and dialogue writer. Films directed by him have also won numerous awards and have been critically acclaimed. He also had worked on small screen by creating series Mirza Ghalib and Tahreer Munshi Premchand ki among others. Gunga Jumna (Hindi: गुणगा जुमना, Urdu: گنگا جمنا also transliterated as Ganga Jamuna or Ganga Jamna) is a 1961 dacoit drama Bollywood film produced in Technicolor by Dilip Kumar and directed by Nitin Bose. The film stars Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala in the lead with Nasir Khan, Azra, Leela Chitnis, Kanhaiyalal, Anwar Hussain, Nasir Hussain, Helen forms an ensemble cast. Notable for its use of Bhojpuri dialect and its rustic setting, the film features real life brothers Dilip Kumar and Nasir Khan in the title role, is on the story of two brothers, Gunga and Jumna, the poignancy of two brothers on opposite sides of the law.
After six months of delay, the film was finally released in January 1961. Upon release the film was well received by the critics and the audience. It was one of the biggest hits of 1960s and still considered as one of the most successful Indian film in terms of box office collection and its controversial theme which earned the film the cult status.
The film and the lead actors, Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala won a lot of accolades for their performance. Upon release it was nominated in seven categories at 9th Filmfare Awards including Best Film, Best Director for Kumar and Bose respectively while winning three; Best Actress for Vyjayanthimala and two other technical award for Wajahat Mirza and V. Balasaheb. It also emerge as the biggest winner at 25th Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards where it won nine awards in the Hindi film category. Lata Mangeshkar (born September 28, 1929) is a singer from India. She is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India. Mangeshkar's career started in 1942 and has spanned over six and a half decades. Nalini Jaywant (18 February 1926 – 20 December 2010) was an Indian movie actress from Bollywood in the 1940s and 1950s.
Jaywant was born in Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1926. She is first cousin to actress Shobhna Samarth, the mother of actresses Nutan and Tanuja. Since 1983, she has been living mostly a reclusive life.

She performed in a few more movies before filming Anokha Pyaar (1948). In 1950, she garnered fame when she became a top star with her performances opposite Ashok Kumar in Samadhi and Sangram. Samadhi was a patriotic drama concerning Subash Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army. Although the leading movie magazine of the day, Film India, called it "politically obsolete", it enjoyed success at the box office. Sangram was a crime drama in which Nalini played the heroine reforming the anti-hero. Padmini Kolhapure is from a Maharashtrian family. Her father, Pandharinath Kolhapure, is a classical singer whose family was from Kolhapur and Goa. Rohini Hattangadi (born 11 April 1955) is an Indian actress of film, theatre and television. She has won two Filmfare Awards, one National Film Award, and is the only Indian actress to win the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Kasturba Gandhi in Gandhi (1982). An alumna of the National School of Drama of New Delhi, Hattangadi had worked mainly in theatre when she made her movie debut with Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan in 1978. Although the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) was located in her hometown Pune, she did not join it because she was mainly interested in theatre and did not have early plans to enter cinema: "I just wanted to be an actor... My heart was in theatre because I learnt from my father (Anant Oak) that real acting is learnt through theatre. That's why I came all the way to Delhi to join NSD." At NSD, she met her future husband Jayadev Hattangadi, who was in the same batch as hers. They were trained together by Ebrahim Alkazi. Upon graduation in 1974, Rohini was awarded the Best Actress award and an award for Best all-round student, while Jayadev, who was being trained in direction, won the Best Director award. Jayadev and Rohini married the following year. Shashikala was born as one among six siblings in Solapur, Maharashtra in a well-to-do Marathi-speaking Jawalkar family. By age 5, she had aleady been dancing, singing, and acting on stage in many towns in Solapur district.

After the Partition of India his family settled in a small village on the bank of river Yamuna called Mandoli in what was Ambala district of East Punjab (now Yamuna Nagar district of Haryana). The Partition had a great toll on his family who had lost all their wealth and, in fact, he was left begging in the streets of Delhi before he re-joined his family. Later he moved to lucknow and spent a long time in Aminabad Galli during graduation and to fulfill his dreams he moved to Mumbai. Supriya Pathak Kapoor (born 7 January 1961) is an Indian actress hailing from a long line of performers. She is famous for her role in the Indian sitcoms Khichdi and Idhar Udhar.
Supriya Pathak is daughter of Dina Pathak, a well known character actress famous for playing mother and grandmother roles during the 1980s and 1990s. Her sister Ratna Pathak Shah is also an actress, who is married to actor Naseeruddin Shah. Supriya is married to actor Pankaj Kapoor with whom she has a daughter and son. Her step son is the famous Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor.
Supriya began her career with the critically acclaimed 1981 film Kalyug which was followed by roles in many more critically acclaimed films such as Vijeta (1982), Bazaar (1982), Masoom (1983) and Mirch Masala (1985). She also had a minor role as Mahatma Gandhi's niece in the multi-award-winning biopic Gandhi (1982) and starred in the 1988 French film The Bengali Night alongside Hugh Grant and in Raakh opposite Aamir Khan. In the early 1990s, she took a long break from acting in films but appeared in several television series. After an 11-year hiatus from acting, she starred in the 2005 film Sarkar opposite Amitabh Bachchan, following which she also worked in some other films, most recently being the 2009 Ranbir Kapoor - Konkona Sen Sharma starrer Wake Up Sid. She is best known for her role of Hansa Praful Parekh in the TV Series Khichdi.

Sushmita Sen
Sushmita Sen (born 19 November, 1975) is an Indian actress who appears in mainly Bollywood films. A former model, Sen was crowned Miss Universe in 1994. She created history by being the first Indian woman to win the contest.
She started her career with Dastak, a movie rumored to have been made on her life. However, she attained commercial and critical recognition for her roles in Sirf Tum (1999) and the comedy Biwi No.1 (1999). The latter earned her the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

In 2010, she ventured into partnership with Tantra Entertainment Private limited becoming the President of the 'I Am She' Miss Universe Contest and the sole representative of the Miss Universe pageant in India.

Usha Kiran (22 April 1929 – 9 March 2000) was a Hindi and Marathi film actress. In a career spanning of over four decades she has acted in over 300 Hindi and Marathi films, notably Daag (1952), Patita (1953), Baadbaan (1954), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975) and Bawarchi (1972). She was also a former Sheriff of Mumbai (1996–97).
She began her acting career on stage with M. G. Rangnekar's Marathi play Ashirwad. She enter Hindi film industry with a small role in Uday Shankar's dance-drama film, Kalpana (1948). She went on to act in numerous popular Hindi films are Nazrana (1961), Daag (1952), and Baadbaan (1954), for which she won the very first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1955 Kabuliwala (1961), Patita (1953), Mili, Bawarchi (1972) and Chupke Chupke (1975).
Her famous Marathi films include, "Shikleli Bayko," "Kanyadaan” (for which she received the Maharashtra Government’s award for best actress) "Gariba Gharchi Lek," and "Kanchanganga" .
She starred opposite Hindi film actors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan.

Vinod Khanna (Hindi: विनोद खन्ना, Punjabi: ਵਿਨੋਦ ਖੰਨਾ born 6 October 1946) is an Indian actor, film producer and politician.
Khanna was born in Peshawar to Kamla and Kishanchand Khanna, a textiles, dyes and chemicals businessman on 6 October 1946, in Peshawar, British India (now in Pakistan).[citation needed] He has three sisters and one brother. Shortly after his birth, India was partitioned and the family left Peshawar and reached Mumbai (then Bombay).[citation needed]
At Mumbai, he attended Queen Mary School, Bombay (Mumbai) until class II and then transferred to St. Xavier's High School, Fort. In 1957, the family again moved to Delhi where he attended Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. Although the family moved back to Mumbai in 1960, he was sent to Barnes School in Deolali, near Nashik. It was during his time at the boarding school that he watched the epic Mughal-e-Azam and fell in love with motion pictures. He graduated with a commerce degree from Sydenham College.
Vinod Khanna debuted in Sunil Dutt's 1968 film Man Ka Meet as a villain. He acted in multi-starrer films often playing supporting and negative roles in hit films such as Purab Aur Paschim (1970), Sachaa Jhutha (1970) and Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971). His big break was in the 1971 film Mere Apne directed by Gulzar. His performance as an army officer facing death row in another Gulzar scripted and directed 1973 film Achanak was critically acclaimed. The songless film echoed the true life story of K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra and Khanna portrayed Kawas Nanavati, the real life Navy officer.

Vyjayanthimala Bali (born on August 13, 1936), also known by the mononym Vyjayanthimala, is an Indian film actress, Bharathanatyam dancer, carnatic singer, dance choreographer, golfer and a Parliamentarian.
Vyjayanthimala was one the biggest Bollywood stars in a career lasting almost two decades. She was also the first South Indian actress to become a national star and "paved way" for the other South Indian actresses such as Waheeda Rehman, Hema Malini, Rekha, Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Meenakshi Seshadri, Aishwarya Rai, Vidya Balan and Asin to foray into Bollywood. Vyjayanthimala is also an accomplished dancer and was one of those who introduced semi-classical dance to Bollywood. She was also referred as one of the first female Superstars of Hindi cinema and was known as "Numero Uno actress" along with Hema Malini, Rekha, Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit for her "illustrious career in 1950s and 1960s".
Born in an orthodox Tamil Brahmin family, Vyjayanthimala made her screen debut at the age of 13 through the Tamil film Vazhkai (1949) and acted in the Bollywood films Bahar and Ladki. Following the success of Nagin, Vyjayanthimala established herself as a one of the Bollywood's leading actress and a successful actress of Tamil descent.

Waheeda Rehman
Waheeda Rehman (born14 May 1936), is an Indian film actress who appears in Bollywood movies and is known for many successful and critically acclaimed movies from 1950's, 60's and early 70's most notably C.I.D. One of the most prominent actresses of the golden era, Waheeda Rehman was born into a traditional Telugu-speaking Muslim family in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, British India. She and her sister learnt Bharatnatyam at Mumbai's Sri Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, where Guru T. K. Mahalingam Pillai, doyen among nattuvanars taught and performed on stage together. Her father, who was a District Commissioner, died while she was still in her teens.
It is a common misconception that Rehman was born in Hyderabad. “It’s a long story,” she says, “When I was in Chennai, I did three to four Tamil and Telugu movies. In the first one, Kaalam Maari Pochu along with Gemini Ganesan a bilingual film which was made in Tamil and Telugu as Rojulu Maraayi, I did only a folk dance number in both Tamil and Telugu versions. However, it went on to become a hit! I was in Hyderabad celebrating its success and Guru Dutt happened to be there. He was on a lookout for new faces and heard that I could speak in Urdu. It is because he spotted me in Hyderabad that people assume I was born there.”

Zeenat Aman
Zeenat Aman (Hindi: ज़ीनत अमान, Urdu: زینت امان) (born 19 November 1951) is an Indian actress who has appeared in Hindi films, notably in the 1970s and 1980s. She was the second runner up in the Miss India Contest and went on to win the Miss Asia Pacific in 1970. Upon making her debut in Bollywood, Aman was credited with making a lasting impact on the image of its leading actresses by bringing the western heroine look to Hindi cinema, and throughout her career has been considered a sex symbol.
Zeenat Aman was born in Mumbai (erstwhile Bombay) to a Muslim father, Amanullah Khan and a Hindu mother, Scinda. Her father was a script writer who was one of the writers for such movies as Mughal-e-Azam and Pakeezah. He died when Zeenat was 13. Her mother got re-married to a German, Mr. Heinz (was constantly referred to as Mrs. Heinz in all subsequent articles film magazines would carry on Zeenat). Zeenat's mother obtained German citizenship, and took her to Germany, where Zeenat was very unhappy, returning to India as soon as she turned 18.

Aruna Irani born in May 3, 1952 is an Indian actress who has acted in over 300 films mostly playing supporting roles. Her performance in both films won her nomination at Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Role. Aruna Irani made her debut in the movie Gunga Jumna (1961) at nine years old playing Azra's character. After doing several small roles in films like Jahanara (1964), Farz (1967), Upkar (1967) and Aaya Sawan Jhoomke (1969). She later acted with comedian Mehmood Ali in films like Aulad (1968), Humjoli (1970), and Naya Zamana (1971). She latered starred in Mehmood Ali's Bombay to Goa (1972), Garam Masala (1972), and Do Phool (1973). Her films have included Farz (1967), Bobby (1973), Fakira (1976), Sargam (1979), Love Story (1981), and Rocky (1981). In the late 1980s and 1990s Irani switched to playing motherly roles, notably in Beta (1992), Raja Babu (1994). In her later career, Irani also switched to television performing character roles in various serials. She also took up to direction and production of tele-serials like Mehndi Tere Naam Ki, Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, Vaidehi and more. Aruna Irani is married to film director Kuku Kohli. In January 2012 she was honored with Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the 57th Filmfare Awards function.

Manik (Jagdeep) is a fisherman living in a small village near a sea coast with his father Gokul (Jayant) who is the Mukhia of the village. Manik is in love with Lakshmi (Shabnam), who is from the same village and they are soon to marry each other. After their marriage, the next morning there is procession of Nariyal Purnima where the fishermen used to go in search of pearls in the sea and it was Manik's first time as he participated in this procession. While he dived into the sea, in search of pearls, he was killed in an accident where he was trapped by an octopus and couldn't set himself free. Soon his wife Lakshmi, is pregnant after the and gives birth to a girl child, but after the birth Lakshmi also dies leaving her child behind with Gokul. Aruna Irani (born May 3, 1952) is an Indian actress who has acted in over 300 films mostly playing supporting roles. She dance in the songs "Chadti Jawani", "Dilbar Dilse Pyare", "Ab Jo Mile Hai" from film Caravan (1971) and "Main Shayar To Nahi" from film Bobby (1973) amongst others. Her performance in both films won her nomination at Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Role. She holds the record for winning maximum nominations (10) in this category and received the award twice for her roles in Pet Pyaar Aur Paap (1985) and Beta (1993). In January 2012 she was honoured with Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the 57th Filmfare Awards function.

Aruna Irani made her debut in the movie Gunga Jumna (1961) at nine years old playing Azra's character. After doing several small roles in films like Jahanara (1964), Farz (1967), Upkar (1967) and Aaya Sawan Jhoomke (1969). She later acted with comedian Mehmood Ali in films like Aulad (1968), Humjoli (1970), and Naya Zamana (1971).
In 1971, she starred in Caravan.
She latered starred in Mehmood Ali's Bombay To Goa (1972), Garam Masala (1972), and Do Phool (1973).
Her films have included Farz (1967), Bobby (1973), Fakira (1976), Sargam (1979), Love Story (1981), and Rocky (1981).
She won her first Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Pet Pyaar Aur Paap (1984).
In the late 1980s and 1990s Irani switched to playing motherly roles, notably in Beta (1992) for which she won her second Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. She acted in the Kannada remake of the same film and the same role. Some of her Marathi films are Changu Mangu, Lapwa Chapvi, Ek Gadi Baki Anadi and Bol Baby Bol.

Aruna Irani (born May 3, 1952) is an Indian actress who has acted in over 300 films mostly playing supporting roles. She dance in the songs "Chadti Jawani", "Dilbar Dilse Pyare", "Ab Jo Mile Hai" from film Caravan (1971) and "Main Shayar To Nahi" from film Bobby (1973) amongst others. Her performance in both films won her nomination at Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Role. She holds the record for winning maximum nominations (10) in this category and received the award twice for her roles in Pet Pyaar Aur Paap (1985) and Beta (1993). In January 2012 she was honoured with Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the 57th Filmfare Awards function.

Aruna Irani made her debut in the movie Gunga Jumna (1961) at nine years old playing Azra's character. After doing several small roles in films like Jahanara (1964), Farz (1967), Upkar (1967) and Aaya Sawan Jhoomke (1969). She later acted with comedian Mehmood Ali in films like Aulad (1968), Humjoli (1970), and Naya Zamana (1971).
