British Malaya (Singapore and Malaysia): 1939 Trip around the World (Part 5 of 10)
Part 5 features city scenes of Singapore, including the Old Supreme Court building. In Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur city scenes and the Penang Hill tram and Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple in Penang. View all 10 parts: www.youtube.com Evelyn Reinhardt took this footage on her solo round-the-world trip in 1939. A history teacher at Southwest and later, Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, Missouri (USA), Ms. Reinhardt complemented her history lessons with stories and films (such as this) from her exotic travels to both Asia and Europe. This particular trip satisfied Ms. Reinhardt's goal of traveling around the world before her 40th birthday. Indeed, she departed San Francisco, California on May 15, 1939 aboard the SS President Taft, and returned to New York, New York, aboard the SS Nieuw Amsterdam on September 4, 1939, twenty three days before she turned 40. Filmed in black and white 16mm film. No audio. Regrettably, the film deteriorated significantly before it was digitized.

Malayan Union
The Malayan Union was a confederation of the Malay states and the Straits Settlements excluding Singapore, which was placed as a crown colony under direct British rule. It was the successor to British Malaya and was conceived to simplify the administration of British colonies in the Malay Peninsula. It was formed on April 1, 1946 by the British. Few of the key details of the Union were: Malayan citizenship that would give equal rights to all would be citizens regardless of race citizenship based on the jus soli principle the transformation of the title Sultan to President. In a way, the Sultans, the traditional rulers of the Malay states, would concede all their powers to the British Crown except in the matters of culture and religion. The Union would be ultimately placed under the rule of a British Governor. The idea of the Union was first expressed by the British on October 1945 in the aftermath of the Second World War by the British Military Administration. Sir Harold MacMichael was assigned the task of gathering the Malay state rulers' approval for the Malayan Union in the same month. In a short period of time, he managed to obtain all the Rulers' signatures through intimidation. On April 1, 1946, the Malayan Union officially came into existence with Sir Edward Gent as its first governor. The capital of the Union was Kuala Lumpur. -From Wikipedia.

Malayan emergency, 1948-1960
For twelve long years we fought the enemy in our midst... We fought against an new ideology, against terror and intimidation, against militant communism. This is the story of our struggle and our victory." After a brief introduction to the Malayans' harmonious multiracial society, the narrator introduces the "grim spectre" of communist subversion. The remainder of the film is a comprehensive account - selectively presented - of the war against the guerrillas - national registration, Briggs resettlement scheme, 'Operation Starvation', Gurney's assassination, Templer's brilliant and dynamic leadership, information and intelligence operations, jungle warfare, air support, White Areas, negotiations with Chin Peng, Merdeka amnesty offer, etc. The narration emphasises the popular character of anti-communism and the role of the Malayan police, home guard, and Federation armed forces. The Commonwealth commitment is recognised, but the British, though often shown on-screen, are seldom mentioned explicitly. Tunku Abdul Rahman is praised for his statesmanship in winning independence from the British. Tunku "achieved the impossible and had carved his name in history". The film concludes with a brief sketch of new economic developments and the end of the days of "darkness and reliance on others". End tribute to the glorious dead.

Opposition To Malayan Union
This is the second part of Malayan Union. In this part, the focus is more on the opposition of the Malays, the local Malay newspapers and some very influential ex-British Officers on Malayan Union. This era also portrays the beginning of Malays unity with the formation of a political organization , United Malays National Organization or UMNO. British later changed Malayan Union 1946 to Federation of Malaya in 1948.

Territory Day 1988 - Christmas Island (7/8)
Christmas Island was annexed by the United Kingdom in 1888 and exploited by the Christmas Island Phosphate Company since 1899 with European employees and Malayan and Chinese workers. A post agency was opened in 1901, managed by the District Officer, the representative of the Straits Settlements colony on the island. The agency sold stamps of this colony, figuring the British monarch. Mail travelled between Christmas Island and Singapore with cargo and migrant workers by the ships commanded by the company. Most of the small amount of mail was sent and received by the European part of the population. During World War II, the Japanese forces invaded the island on 31 March 1942.[3] After the British forces liberated Christmas Island, British Military Administration overprinted stamps of Malaya were in use in the island. The civil postal agency was reopened by the end of 1946. After these events, the local postal system followed the political changes in British Malaya. Administratively linked to Singapore in April 1946, Christmas Island received this colony's stamps in 1948, but the mail was transported by the Pan Malayan Postal Union. (extract from Wikipedia 2011)

We'll Meet Again - Battle of Malaya and Singapore 1941/1942
This is a 1939 song made famous by British singer Vera Lynn with music written by Ross Parker and words by Hughie Charles. The version here is by Peggy Lee with Benny Goodman. Clip features British defences in Malaya, and the secret weapon of the Japanese - the bicycle. In 2 months, Japanese troops cycled and conquered the length of Malaya, ending with the British surrender at Bukit Timah in Singapore. Clip includes the British surrender party with a white flag carried by Major Wild at the surrender.(Major Wild became a War Crime investigator after the war. He was killed in an air crash whilst conducting investigations against Japanese War Criminals. Special thanks to his niece Rose Wild for the info.) Also shown are civilian air raid precaution officers of all races fighting fires ignited by Japanese bombing. A very pretty girl in pink is featured walking pass the street full of soldiers and civil defence volunteers. I wonder what really happened to her? Did she survive the war? Can anyone help identify her?......she's cute!

Burgess in Malaya
1981. Burgess returns to Malaya, since renamed Malaysia, for a British television programme called 'Writers and Places: A Kind of Failure' (dir. David Wallace). In 1954 Anthony Burgess had found himself in Kuala Kangsar, the royal town in Perak, in the Federated Malay States. He was a teacher of English literature at the Malay College, dubbed "the Eton of the East". Part of Burgess's duties was to act as housemaster in charge of pupils of the preparatory school, who were housed in a Victorian-era mansion known as 'King's Pavilion'. The building had once been occupied by the British Resident in Perak. It had gained notoriety during World War II as a place of torture, being the local headquarters of the Kempeitai (Japanese secret police). After a dispute with the Malay College's headmaster at the time, JDR ("Jimmy") Howell, about accommodation for himself and his wife, Burgess moved to Kota Bharu.
