Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) Familiarization - Unix on Windows!
Windows Services for UNIX (SFU) or Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) is a software package produced by Microsoft which provides a Unix subsystem and other parts of a full Unix environment on Windows NT and some of its immediate successor operating-systems. It was an extension and replacement of the minimal Microsoft POSIX subsystem from Windows NT As of 2011 SFU contains: Over 350 Unix utilities such as vi, ksh, csh, ls, cat, awk, grep, kill, etc. GCC 3.3 compiler, includes and libraries (through an MS libc) A cc-like wrapper for Microsoft Visual Studio command-line C/C++ compiler GDB debugger Perl NFS server and client A pcnfsd daemon X11 tools and libraries Tools for making NFS mount-points appear as Windows shares, and vice-versa (gateway services) An NIS server capability linked with Active Directory (AD) Some Windows/Unix authentication information-synchronization tools SFU does not contain the following (but binaries are available for separate installation): bash, OpenSSH, sudo, CVS, ClamAV, bzip2, gmake, curl, emacs, Apache, XView, Ruby, Tcl, Python Although SFU includes X Window System client libraries and applications, it does not contain a native X server. Administrators may configure any of the numerous third-party Windows X servers: fully featured free options include Cygwin/X, Xming, WeirdMind and WeirdX. Visit: www.suacommunity.com

The Barrelfish Operating System - open source (UNIX-like)
Official Website: www.barrelfish.org Barrelfish is a new research operating system being built from scratch and released by ETH Zurich in Switzerland, with assistance from Microsoft Research. We are exploring how to structure an OS for future multi- and many-core systems. We are motivated by two closely related trends in hardware design first, the rapidly growing number of cores, which leads to a scalability challenge, and second, the increasing diversity in computer hardware, requiring the OS to manage and exploit heterogeneous hardware resources. Appnovision Episode #5 - Alfresco
Alfresco is an enterprise content management system for Microsoft Windows and Unix-like operating systems. Alfresco comes in two flavours[2]. Alfresco Community Edition is free software, GPL licensed open source and open standards. Alfresco Enterprise Edition is commercially / proprietary licensed open source, open standards and enterprise scale. Its design is geared towards users who require a high degree of modularity and scalable performance. Alfresco includes a content repository, an out-of-the-box web portal framework for managing and using standard portal content, a CIFS interface that provides file system compatibility on Microsoft Windows and Unix-like operating systems, a web content management system capable of virtualizing webapps and static sites via Apache Tomcat, Lucene indexing, and jBPM workflow. The Alfresco system is developed using Java technology.

Axis network camera HTTP login bypass / root exploit.
An Axis Network Camera captures and transmits live images directly over an IP network, enabling users to remotely view and/or manage the camera from a Web browser on any computer. The affected Axis devices run a Linux like operating system. With this vulnerability we can reset the root password. Then using the default open ftp server, we can download configuration files, modify these files and upload them again. Modifying /etc/inittab it is possible to enable the Telnet server, giving the us interactive access to a Unix like command line. Axis provides free developer tools, so it is feasible for us to build tools like port scanners or proxies to start attacks from the compromised camera (which are usually installed inside internal networks) which could lead to the compromise of the internal network. Using this vulnerability, we can reset the root password, then enable the telnet server by modifying configuration files, giving the us interactive access to a Unix like command line, allowing us to execute arbitrary commands as root.

PC-BSD 8.....In the groove with BSD..
Here is PC-BSD 8,a Unix based desktop via BSD,based on free BSD but with a nice GUI installer. Now on the whole i really liked it and it made a change, but it is KDE in the end,but it is really fast when your not recording at the same time and it has its little quirks too,so if you like the sound of BSD and don't want to run with the other mole's(apparently thats what they call us Linux guys and girls)you may like this one.. Unix epoch time to 1234567890 upcount party
Party at Videoplaza (www.videoplaza.com ) in Stockholm to celebrate the unix event (yes, we're geeks). What's this about? Read more about this event at Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org It was celebrated all over the world. Luckily for us in the Stockholm timezone, it happened half an hour after midnight Friday night, making it an excellent excuse to throw a party. PS. Videoplaza is a startup building advertising solutions for online video (such as the one you're watching). They're looking for talented Flash coders. www.videoplaza.com

Revolution OS
The film begins with glimpses of Raymond, a Linux IPO, Torvalds, the idea of Open Source, Perens, Stallman, then sets the historical stage in the early days of hackers and computer hobbyists when code was shared freely. It discusses how change came in 1978 as Bill Gates, in his Open Letter to Hobbyists, pointedly prodded hobbyists to pay up. Stallman relates his struggles with proprietary software vendors at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, leading to his departure to focus on the development of free software, and the GNU project. Torvalds describes the development of the Linux kernel, the GNU/Linux naming controversy, Linux's further evolution, and its commercialization. Raymond and Stallman clarify the philosophy of free software versus communism and capitalism, as well as the development stages of Linux. Michael Tiemann discusses meeting Stallman in 1987, getting an early version of Stallman's GCC, and founding Cygnus Solutions. Larry Augustin describes combining GNU software with a normal PC to create a Unix-like workstation at one third the price and twice the power of a Sun workstation. He relates his early dealings with venture capitalists, the eventual capitalization and commodification of Linux for his own company, VA Linux, and its IPO. Brian Behlendorf, one of the original developers of the Apache HTTP Server, explains that he started to exchange patches for the NCSA web server daemon with other developers, which led to the release of "a patchy" webserver ...

Pizza Party: A Command Line Program for Ordering Pizza
This is a program that orders pizza. Judging from its description on the website, and from the video, it only works with UNIX-like Operating Systems (though they appeared to be using an old version of Windows) and the pizza is only from Domino's. I haven't downloaded it, so I don't know. Anyways, this video shows the designers using the software to order a pizza, and how to do so. It's quite interesting.

Plasma Themes - Kubuntu 9.10
Plasma, part of KDE 4, is a fundamental rewrite of several desktop interaction technologies included in the KDE desktop environment for Linux and other Unix-like systems, focusing on eyecandy and special graphical effects. It most notably replaces the previous KDesktop shell, Kicker taskbar and SuperKaramba widget engine used in the KDE 3 series with a unified workspace for KDE 4. Plasma also provides a resolution-independent interface for KDE, making the desktop look identical almost regardless of screen size or resolution. Plasma's applets are collectively called plasmoids, but range from informative widgets to mini-applications like calculators and dictionaries. An important feature of Plasma is that there is no longer a distinction between panels (like the taskbar), desktop icons, and widgets; they are created the same way. Plasma separates components into "data engines" and their visualization counterparts. This is intended to reduce the total programming effort when there are multiple possible visualizations of given data; and to make it easier for the data engine and its visualizations to be written independently. The planned replacement for KMenu in later versions of KDE 4, called Raptor, will make extensive use of this.

Launchd: One Program to Rule them All
Google Tech Talks July 20, 2007 ABSTRACT Since time immemorial (or the advent of UNIX--pretty much the same thing), the init program has been the first user-space program to run on Unix-like systems. As systems grew more complex, so did system initialization. The responsibilities of init grew multifold and its implementations diverged. Beginning with the "Tiger" version of Mac OS X, Apple introduced a powerful new way of system initialization: launchd. Launchd isn't just an init replacement though--it provides a powerful XML interface for defining when, where, and how programs should be invoked on OS X. In this talk, Dave, who developed launchd, will discuss the rationale behind launchd and how...

The All Purpose Tool For Windows You NEED to Download - Tekzilla Daily Tip
Pipy is an application launcher that pulls from Unix-based operating systems by allowing you to pipe output from one set of commands to another. You can search your hard drive for a file and then dig even further by sending the results to the 'grep' command. The potential is pretty incredible!
