Who rules the Web? : ITU vs. ICANN
Since it's creating, the Internet has been governed by the United States. Although the Internet's governing body, ICANN, is coming under increased criticism for its close ties to the US government and now critics argue that it is time for an international body, such as the United Nations, to assume regulatory authority.

ICANN New gTLDs (new generic Top Level Domains)
Get ready for the next big .thing An overview of New gTLD's (new generic Top Level Domains). The Internet is about to experience a dramatic and important change that will effect every user. Today, web addresses end with familiar extensions such as dot com and dot org. Soon there could be hundreds more of these dot extensions. Their called generic Top Level Domains or gTLDs. What do new gTLDs mean for you? This video will help you find out. In order to understand what exactly is changing and how it will effect you lets look behind the scenes at how domain names work. This is what is known as a generic Top Level Domain. Today there are only twenty two such TLDs, After the top level comes the second level. When you register a domain name you are actually creating a unique combination of a first and second level name. Lets say you want to register example.com "I'll register example.com!" You are the registrant and you acquire the name using a registrar accredited by ICANN. Registrant -- Registrar -- Registry The registrar checks with the registry and if the name you want is available then you get to use it. Note that the registry is who makes your domain name function technically. The registry puts your domain name in the right databases so that the rest of the Internet can find you. Until now, there have been millions of possible domain names on the second level but fewer than two dozen generic domain possibilities at the top level and that's what about to change. With ...

ICANN Announces More Than Domain Names During its Reveal Day
This is the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has released a list of proposed new domain names. A generic top-level domain, or gTLD, is the part of an Internet address after the dot -- like dot-com or dot-org. Currently there are 22 of these top-level domains in use. But there soon could be as many as a thousand or more. Rod Beckstrom is president of ICANN. He says the organization received almost 2000 requests for new domains during the application period, which ended in May. He called the release a historic day for the Internet and for more than two billion people around the world who depend on it. He said the Internet is about to change forever. More than 900 of the requests for new generic top-level domains came from North America. Only seventeen were from Africa. Each application required a payment of $185000. Some businesses like Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google applied for domain name extensions. Dot-app was one of the most sought after names. ICANN received 13 requests for the right to own that one. There were three applications for dot-dog, but none for dot-cat. Dot-love, dot-wedding, dot-sexy and dot-porn also made the list of proposed top-level domains. But Mr. Beckstrom says no names are guaranteed. These are just applications that are not yet approved, and some may not be. In his words, "None of them will enter the Internet until they have undergone a ...

ICANN's New gTLD Program Security Stability Governance
ICANN's New gTLD Program: Implications on Security, Stability, and Governance Alexander Urbelis The Internet is about to rapidly expand. Through ICANN's new generic top level domain (gTLD) program - for the first time ever - individual entities can customize the space to the right of the dot. While currently only 22 gTLDs exist (eg, .com, .net, .org, etc.), on June 13, ICANN announced that it had received an unexpected 1930 applications for new gTLDs, ranging from applications for .AARP to .ZULU. This talk will examine the security and stability concerns that arise from the rapid expansion of the Internet's root zone. Also included will be the current state of the new gTLD program, the security issues that plagued the application process in April, and how this new model of gTLD ownership (with large swaths of Internet real estate in the hands of private entities) will change our current model of Internet governance.

What Is ICANN?
This video explains, in roughly two minutes, what the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is and what it does. I wrote this the day I became ICANN's Director of Marketing. It's an early version from 2010 that needs minor corrections.

ICANN - DNS - Websperren
Die Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
