Carlos Joseph Condit (born April 26, 1984) is an American mixed martial artist currently fighting for the Ultimate Fighting Championship where he is the interim welterweight champion. Condit initially received national attention for his run as the final WEC Welterweight Champion. He is known for his well rounded game, having a nearly equal amount of Submission and Knockout wins. Condit is also known for having an iron chin having never been knocked out in MMA competition. Condit is ranked as the #2 welterweight in the world Sherdog^[3], #2 by ESPN^[4] and #1 by USA Today.^[5] Sherdog ranks him as the #10 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.^[6]

Background and training[link]

Condit formerly fought in the UFC's sister promotion, World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), where he was the final WEC welterweight champion.^[1] He also competed for both Shootboxing and Pancrase in Japan.

Condit now trains at Jackson's Submission Fighting out of Albuquerque, NM.

World Extreme Cagefighting[link]

Condit made his debut for the WEC at WEC 25 where he defeated Kyle Jensen in the first round via submission (Rear Naked Choke). Condit's second fight would be for the vacant WEC Welterweight Championship against John Alessio at WEC 26. Condit would win this fight in the second round, once again, by Rear Naked Choke and became the WEC Welterweight Champion.

Condit would then defend the title against Brock Larson at WEC 29 and Carlo Prater at WEC 32, defeating both by submission in the first round. Condit's final defense would be against Hiromitsu Miura at WEC 35. The fight would end via TKO in the fourth round, winning Fight of the Night honors, which meant that Condit would be the last ever WEC Welterweight Champion after the UFC dissolved the title and division. Condit's record in the WEC would end at a perfect 5–0.

Transition to the UFC[link]

Condit would make the move to UFC after the WEC buyout and he made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) organization, losing via a very close split decision against Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 18. The fight was close enough that Fightmetric ruled the bout a draw.

He was then scheduled to fight Chris Lytle on September 16, 2009, at UFC Fight Night 19, but Lytle had to drop out due to a knee injury.^[8] UFC newcomer Jake Ellenberger would step up to replace Lytle.^[9] Condit then defeated Ellenberger via split decision to get his first win in the UFC.

Condit later had to drop out of a scheduled fight at UFC 108 against Paul Daley due to a hand injury.^[10]

Condit defeated Rory MacDonald via third-round TKO at UFC 115^[11] in a bout that earned the Fight of the Night award. Although MacDonald seemed to get the better of the first two rounds with effective striking and takedowns, Condit came back with a more aggressive attitude in the final round, finishing MacDonald with a combination of elbows and short punches.^[12]

Condit faced Dan Hardy on October 16, 2010 at UFC 120. In the first round, Condit connected with a powerful left hook during an exchange, which dropped Hardy. Condit then landed two punches to Hardy on the ground before the referee stopped the fight at 4:27 of the first round. This victory made Condit the first man to defeat Hardy by way of KO and also earned him Knockout of the Night honours.^[13][14]

Condit was expected to face Chris Lytle on February 27, 2011 at UFC 127.^[15] However, Condit was forced from the bout after suffering a knee injury while training^[16] and he was replaced by promotional newcomer Brian Ebersole.^[17]

Condit faced Dong Hyun Kim on July 2, 2011 at UFC 132.^[18] Condit won the fight via first round KO (flying knee and punches) earning Knockout of the Night honors. This fight gave Kim his first professional MMA loss.

Condit was expected to face B.J. Penn on October 29, 2011 at UFC 137.^[19] However, UFC president Dana White announced at the UFC 137 press conference that Condit would no longer face Penn and instead replace Nick Diaz, who had failed to show up for any event related press appearances, and face Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 137.^[20] On October 18, 2011, it was announced that St. Pierre had pulled out of the fight due to a knee injury.^[21] After conferring with his management and UFC officials, Condit elected not to compete against a replacement fighter at UFC 137, but face St. Pierre in early 2012.^[22][23] However, after Diaz defeated Penn at UFC 137, officials decided to have St. Pierre fight Diaz at UFC 143.^[24]

Condit was expected to face Josh Koscheck on February 4, 2012 at UFC 143.^[25] However, due to a knee injury sustained by St. Pierre, Condit faced Diaz at the event, with the winner being awarded an interim UFC Welterweight Championship.^[26] Condit defeated Diaz via unanimous decision.^[27] Diaz tested positive for marijuana in the post-fight drug test.^[28]

Personal life[link]

Condit's father, Brian, was the Chief of Staff for former New Mexico governor and Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson.^[29] Condit married his longtime girlfriend, Seager Marie McCullah, in December 2010.^[30] The couple welcomed their first child, a son, in March 2010.^[31] Condit is of Austrian, German, and Mexican descent.^[32]

John Paul Alessio (born July 5, 1979) is a Canadian mixed martial artist who currently competes as a lightweight in the UFC. Alessio has fought for many of the major MMA promotions, including the UFC, WEC, PRIDE, KOTC, MFC and DREAM.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[link]

Alessio made his UFC debut at just 20 years old at UFC 26 on June 9, 2000 when he faced Pat Miletich. He lost the fight via armbar submission in the second round.^[1]

EliteXC[link]

Alessio then signed a three-fight contract with EliteXC.^[2] However, he did not fight for the promotion before they ceased operations in October 2008.

Ultimate Glory[link]

Alessio faced Sergey Golyaev at Ultimate Glory 12 on October 16, 2010. He won the fight in the second round via kimura.^[3]

Alessio then fought Siyar Bahadurzada in the United Glory welterweight semifinals on January 30, 2011 in Charleroi, Belgium and was beaten via TKO in the first round.^[4]

On April 3, 2012 it was reported that Alessio has returned to the UFC to replace an injured Matt Wiman and face Mark Bocek at UFC 145. Allesio was defeated via Unanimous Decision (30-27 29-28 30-27).^[5]

Alessio is expected to face Shane Roller on July 7, 2012 at UFC 148.^[6]

Alessio married Noelani Timas Import Tunermodel on June 9, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada.^[7] and they have one son.^[8]

Dan Hardy (born May 17, 1982) is an English professional mixed martial artist who competes in the welterweight division. A professional MMA competitor since 2004, Hardy fought in various promotions such as Cage Force and Cage Warriors before signing a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2008. He was the final Cage Warriors welterweight and light-welterweight champion.^[1] His nickname comes from the screen name he used on the Cage Warrior forum when he was looking for training partners after a disagreement with a coach and his former training partners were forbidden to work with him.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[link]

Hardy defeated Akihiro Gono via split decision in his UFC debut at UFC 89.^[2] Gono was left swollen and bloody by several of Hardy's left hooks.^[3] Gono rocked Hardy on several occasions. In the third round Gono pushed Hardy to the canvas and while there landed an illegal knee to the head of the downed fighter causing the fight to be stopped for a lengthy period and a point deduction for Gono. Hardy recovered and went on to win the split decision. The judges saw the bout 29–28 (twice) for Hardy and 29–28 for Gono.

Dan Hardy beat Rory Markham at UFC 95 in the first round (1:09) by KO with a clean counter left hook.^[4] A follow-up shot on the mat brought in Kevin Mulhall to stop the fight.^[5] In his post-fight interview, Hardy retorted to Markham's pre-fight accusation that he had weak hands by exclaiming to the ecstatic crowd, "No punching power? What do you have to say about that?”

Dan Hardy next faced Marcus Davis at UFC 99 on June 13, 2009. The grudge between these two men began with the Irish-American Davis fighting in the UK against local fighters and defeating them all in a dominating fashion. Hardy stated that the UK was his home and he did not want Davis in it, building a fan base. It started to get personal when Hardy began openly insulting Davis calling him a fake Irishman and stating that Davis' website "looked like a St. Patrick's day gift shop blew up."^[6]

Afterwards, on an UK underground MMA website, Hardy encouraged fans to post photoshopped pictures of Davis in a homosexual fashion. The pictures upset Davis, causing him to confront Hardy at a UFC 99 press conference. The two continued to argue, but finally agreed to settle it in the cage.^[7] After a three round war, the judges at UFC 99 awarded Dan Hardy the controversial split decision. Marcus Davis stormed out of the cage ignoring Hardy's attempts to make peace. Davis later told reporters that he wanted a rematch with Hardy in Ireland or Boston, as well as quoting how controversial he thought the decision was.^[8] Hardy insists in his post-fight interview with Davis (and after the event to fans) that all of controversy was an effort to get Davis off his game-plan and nothing personal.

Title aspirations[link]

On November 14, 2009 at UFC 105 he faced Mike Swick who replaced an injured Dong Hyun Kim.^[9] At a press conference in Manchester^[10] Hardy and Swick discussed the winner of their fight getting a title shot against Georges St-Pierre. Hardy was the underdog coming into the fight,^[11] but managed to rock Swick early in the first round with a straight right hand which appeared to dent the American's confidence.^[12] Swick appeared to be uncomfortable standing toe-to-toe with the Englishman and Hardy proceeded to rock him again in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.^[13] Hardy won the fight by unanimous decision and booked his place as the number 1 contender for GSP's Welterweight title. In being awarded the title shot, Hardy became the first English fighter in UFC history to receive one. UFC President Dana White confirmed at the post-fight press conference that the fight would most likely be held in Las Vegas. Dan stated in a post-fight interview with Sherdog.com that the next event in Las Vegas (UFC 109) in February was a little too early for him and he would much rather wait.^[14]

Hardy was then scheduled to face Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title on March 27, 2010 at UFC 111 in Newark, New Jersey.^[15] During the bout St-Pierre was able to take Hardy down at will, controlling him with effective ground and pound. St-Pierre was also able to secure a tight armbar and kimura in the first and fourth rounds, with Hardy refusing to tap despite the risk of his arm being broken. St-Pierre defended his title in a unanimous decision after 5 rounds (50-43, 50-44, 50-45)^[16][17] and after the fight stated his surprise that Hardy refused to tap. In the post fight interview with Joe Rogan, Hardy stated "....tap?...I don't know the meaning of tap."^[18]

Post-title fight[link]

Hardy faced Carlos Condit on October 16, 2010 at UFC 120. During a late exchange in the first round, Both Hardy and Condit threw hard left hooks at the same time with Hardy's punch staggering Condit, while Condit's punch dropped Hardy. ^[19] Condit followed up with two more punches on the ground, causing the referee to stop the fight at 4:27 of the first round and giving Hardy his first defeat by KO.

Hardy faced Anthony Johnson on March 26, 2011 at UFC Fight Night 24. Going into the fight, both fighters expressed desire to stand up and trade with one another, Hardy lost the fight via unanimous decision, with Johnson mostly utilizing his wreslting grinding out a decision victory for all three rounds.

Hardy faced Chris Lytle on August 14, 2011 at UFC on Versus 5.^[20] Dan has stated that he has changed his training going into this fight, moving to Las Vegas to train at the Country Club with Roy Nelson to work on his grappling, particularly his wrestling defense/offense.^[21] He lost the fight via guillotine choke in the third round, in a back and forth war that saw Lytle landing the busier strikes and Hardy landing the harder counters. The bout earned Fight of the Night honors. Lorenzo Fertitta quoted however he will not cut Hardy after his recent consecutive losses (at the time) because he said "I ain't cutting Dan Hardy. I love guys that go out there and have incredible heart, as well as great wars, fight-after-fight!".

Hardy faced Duane Ludwig on May 26, 2012 at UFC 146.^[22] Hardy defeated Ludwig via KO in the first round with a perfectly timed left hook that dropped Ludwig and followed up on the ground finishing with elbow strikes, earning him his first victory since 2009.

Personal life[link]

Hardy is a fan of punk, metal and hardcore music ^[23] and is affiliated with the Nottingham-based extreme metal record label Earache Records. His favourite hardcore bands include Earth Crisis, Madball, and Blood for Blood.^[24] He has collaborated with Deathwish Records in releasing Blood for Blood / Dan Hardy shirts, as well as a hoodie. His opening song is "England Belongs To Me" by the British Oi! band Cock Sparrer, and he and the band have recorded a version of the song together. He has a passion for art, rarely spending a day without a sketch pad in his bag until the age of 22 and he gave up his degree in art and design in his final year at Nottingham Trent University to pursue MMA full time.^[25] Dan is also a fan of the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team.^{[citation needed]}. Hardy lives in both England and Las Vegas with his American fiance, Elizabeth.
