A6177 road
The A6177 is a ring road around Bradford in West Yorkshire, England. It is mostly formed from existing roads and save for its southern section is single-carriageway.
Starting from Undercliffe going clockwise at the junction of the A658 to the east of Knaresborough road, it heads south along the single carriageway Idle Road and Killinghall road through Bradford Moor before crossing the B6381 Bradford to Thornbury road at Habib's Restaurant, the former Barrack Tavern public house. The next major junction is at Laisterdyke with Leeds Road, part of the A647 Halifax to Leeds via Bradford road, which it meets for the first time. Just after crossing the A647, it passes over the Leeds to Bradford railway line and continues via Sticker Lane to Dudley Hill roundabout, an elevated junction with sliproad connections to and from Wakefield Road part of the A650 Wakefield to Keighley road.
At Dudley Hill, the road turns east and becomes the dual carriageway Rooley Lane. To the left soon after Dudley Hill is Rook Lane which forms a link for traffic from the northbound A650 for traffic heading clockwise onto the ring road. The next roundabout is Bierley which connects with an Asda supermarket and the Bierley housing estate. Continuing eastwards then is the elevated Staygate roundabout which connects with the M606 Chain Bar and the M62, and the A6036 to Stump Cross near Halifax. Clockwise traffic negotiates Staygate roundabout into Mayo Avenue while anticlockwise traffic is diverted from the roundabout pass the end of the M606 up a slip road which was once part of Birch Lane into the ring road.

A647 road
The A647 is an A road in West Yorkshire, England that begins in Leeds and ends in Halifax. The road is approximately 18 miles (30 km) long.
The road begins at the Armley Gyratory and goes via Armley, by-passes Stanningley and Pudsey, then onwards via Thornbury and then to the edge of Bradford city centre.
The road then becomes part of the Bradford's Inner Ring Road (Croft Street) before heading through Great Horton and up to Queensbury (350 metres above sea level) before heading down hill via Boothtown to Halifax town centre.
The road is a stretch of dual carriageway in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was built to ease traffic congestion along Stanningley Road, forming part of the Leeds Outer Ring Road.
It is notable for the fact that it had Britain's first High Occupancy Vehicle Lane (HOV lane).

Addingham

Addingham (formerly Haddincham c.972, Odingehem 1086) is a village and civil parish in the English county of West Yorkshire. It is situated on the A65, 3 miles (5 km) west of Ilkley, 15 miles (24 km) north west of Bradford and around 17 miles (27 km) north west of Leeds. It is located in the valley of the River Wharfe and is only 3 miles (5 km) from the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The name is thought to mean "homestead associated with a man called Adda", although in the Domesday Book, the village was referred to as "Ediham", which may have referred to Earl Edwin of Bolton Abbey. The 2001 census numbered Addingham's population at 3,599.
The area around Addingham is thought to have been populated from at least Bronze Age times, indicated by the 'cup and ring' carved stones that can be found on Addingham Moor. It's beginnings may date back to the late Mesolithic period, as evidenced by the scattered remains of early flint tools across Rombald's Moor to the south.

Antonine Wall
The Antonine Wall is a stone and turf fortification built by the Romans across what is now the Central Belt of Scotland, between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. Representing the northernmost frontier barrier of the Roman Empire, it spanned approximately 63 km (39 miles) and was about 3 m (10 feet) high and 5 m (15 feet) wide. Security was bolstered by a deep ditch on the north side. The barrier was the second of two "great walls" created by the Romans in Northern Britain. Its ruins are less evident than the better known Hadrian's Wall to the south.
Construction began in AD 142 at the order of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, and took about 12 years to complete.
Pressure from the Caledonians may have led Antoninus to send the empire's troops farther north. The wall was protected by 16 forts with a number of small fortlets between them; troop movement was facilitated by a road linking all the sites known as the Military Way. The soldiers who built the wall commemorated the construction and their struggles with the Caledonians in a number of decorative slabs, twenty of which still survive. Despite this auspicious start the wall was abandoned after only 20 years, and the garrisons relocated back to Hadrian's Wall. In 208 Emperor Septimius Severus re-established legions at the wall and ordered repairs; this has led to the wall being referred to as the Severan Wall. However, the occupation ended only a few years later, and the wall was never fortified again. Most of the wall and its associated fortifications have been destroyed over time, but some remains are still visible. Many of these have come under the care of Historic Scotland and the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

Apperley Bridge is a village in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England. Apperley Bridge is north-east of Bradford on the boundary with the City of Leeds bounded in part in the east by Carr Beck and to the south by Greengates. The village of Apperley Bridge straddles both the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the River Aire. It takes its name from the old bridge (Apperley Bridge) over the river Aire on Apperley Lane.
Parts of Rawdon in Leeds of similar character are included in the BD10 Apperley Bridge postal district.

Baildon

Baildon is a civil parish and village north of Bradford in Northern England. It is part of the Bradford Metropolitan District in the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire and within the historic boundaries of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It lies 5 miles (8 km) north of Bradford and 9.5 miles (15 km) northwest of Leeds city centre. Other nearby towns include Shipley to the south and Keighley to the west. The Baildon ward has a population of 15,368.
Baildon Moor has a number of gritstone outcrops with numerous prehistoric cup and ring marks. A denuded and mutilated bank represents the remains of an Iron Age settlement known as Soldier's Trench, sometimes mistaken for a Bronze Age stone circle. A Bronze Age cup-marked rock is incorporated in the bank.
The village is served by Baildon railway station, which is on the electrified Wharfedale Line with connections to Bradford Forster Square, Leeds and Ilkley.
Within Baildon there are several sports clubs, run from Baildon Rugby Union Football Club. These include the rugby, cricket and running clubs.

Barkerend

Barkerend is an inner-city area in the Bowling and Barkerend ward of the Bradford District, in the English county of West Yorkshire. Barkerend is located to the east of Bradford city centre. The Barkerend area is not easy to define but it is surrounded by Undercliffe and Undercliffe Cemetery, Bradford Moor, Laisterdyke, Bowling, Broomfields, Little Germany and the Shipley Airedale Road, and Wapping but includes an area of new and modern housing known as Pollard Park.
Off Barkerend roundabout was the now partially demolished Barkerend Mills.* These mills were established in 1815 as a steam powered worsted spinning mill. The street front buildings being warehouses with an arched gateway into the mill complex behind. More mills were added in 1852 and the last block (seen on the image left with chimney) still remains today, disused and minus the chimney.
The area had a number of cinemas including The Hippodrome Picturehouse / Roxy on Barkerend Road.

Ben Rhydding is a Wharfedale village in the Metropolitan Borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It is part of the Ilkley urban area and civil parish.
It is situated on a north-facing valley beneath the Cow and Calf Rocks and above and to the south of the River Wharfe, and falls within the historic West Riding of Yorkshire.
The former name for the village area was Wheatley. In the 19th century it was noted for a popular and thoroughly equipped hydropathic establishment, opened in about 1844 at a cost of £30,000. It was the third major hydropathic establishment in England, "perhaps the most deeply respected and certainly the longest-lived".Ben Rhydding, the name given to the establishment was also given to the railway station built to serve it and by which the village subsequently became known, is allegedly the ancient name of the uplands above Wheatley. In a 1900 history of Upper Wharfedale, a footnote describes the circumstances, citing Collyer's History of Ilkley:

Bingley is a market town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The town has a population of 19,884 according to the 2001 Census.
Local travel links include Bingley railway station in the town centre and Leeds Bradford International Airport, which is located 7 miles (11 km) from the city centre. The B6265 (Main Street), connecting Bingley to Keighley, runs through the town centre.
Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Bingley appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Bingheleia".
Bingley was probably founded about the time of the Saxons; certainly its name is Saxon in origin. Bingley was founded by a ford on the River Aire. This crossing gave access to Harden, Cullingworth and Wilsden on the south side of the river.

Blaenavon

Blaenavon (Welsh: Blaenafon) is a town and World Heritage Site in south eastern Wales, lying at the source of the Afon Lwyd north of Pontypool, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. The town lies high on a hillside and has a population of 6,349 people. Blaenavon literally means "front of the river" or loosely "river's source" in the Welsh language.
Blaenavon grew around an ironworks opened in 1788, part of which is now a museum. The steel-making and coal mining industries followed, boosting the town's population to over 20,000 at one time, but since the ironworks closed in 1900 and the coal mine in 1980, the population has declined.

Blenheim Palace
Blenheim Palace (/ˈblɛnəm/) (pronounced "Blen-im") is a monumental stately home situated in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England. It is the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough. The palace, one of England's largest houses, was built between 1705 and circa 1724. UNESCO recognised the palace as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
The palace's construction was originally intended to be a gift to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough from a grateful nation in return for military triumph against the French and Bavarians at the Battle of Blenheim. However, it soon became the subject of political infighting, which led to Marlborough's exile, the fall from power of his duchess, and irreparable damage to the reputation of the architect Sir John Vanbrugh.
Designed in the rare, and short-lived, English Baroque style, architectural appreciation of the palace is as divided today as it was in the 1720s. It is unique in its combined usage as a family home, mausoleum and national monument. The palace is also notable as the birthplace and ancestral home of Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill.

i/ˈbrædfəd/) lies at the heart of the City of Bradford, a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, in Northern England. It is situated in the foothills of the Pennines, 8.6 miles (13.8 km) west of Leeds, and 16 miles (25.7 km) northwest of Wakefield. Bradford became a municipal borough in 1847, and received its charter as a city in 1897. Following local government reform in 1974, city status was bestowed upon the wider metropolitan borough.
Bradford has a population of 293,717, making it the fourteenth-most populous settlement in the United Kingdom. Bradford forms part of the West Yorkshire Urban Area conurbation which in 2001 had a population of 1.5 million and is part of the Leeds-Bradford Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), the third largest in the UK after London and Manchester, with an estimated population in the 2004 Urban Audit of 2.4 million.
Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Bradford rose to prominence during the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture, particularly wool. It was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and amongst the earliest industrialised settlements, rapidly becoming the "wool capital of the world". The area's access to a supply of coal, iron ore and soft water facilitated the growth of Bradford's manufacturing base, which, as textile manufacture grew, led to an explosion in population and was a stimulus to civic investment; Bradford has fine Victorian architecture including the grand Italianate City Hall.

Bradford Alhambra
The Bradford Alhambra is a theatre in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It was built in 1913 at a cost of £20,000 for theatre impresario Francis Laidler, and opened on Wednesday 18 March 1914. In 1964 Bradford City Council bought the Alhambra for £78,900. In 1974 it was designated a Grade II listed building. It was extensively refurbished in 1986. It seats 1456. Today it is a receiving house for large-scale touring theatre of all types.
Francis Laidler, who already owned two music halls in Bradford, opened the new Alhambra Theatre in 1914. The architects were Chadwick and Watson, who described it as "English renaissance of the Georgian period".
Today, the Alhambra is a major touring venue and hosts a wide range of stage shows from ballet and opera to variety and comedy, musicals, drama and, of course, the annual pantomime. Regular visits are made from prestigious companies such as Opera North, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre and the Royal National Theatre to complement spectacular West End musicals such as Grease, Whistle Down the Wind and The Phantom of the Opera.

Bradford Cathedral
Bradford Cathedral (grid reference SE166333), full name Cathedral Church of St Peter, is situated in the heart of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England, on a site used for Christian worship since the 8th century when missionaries based in Dewsbury evangelised the region. For most of its history the building was the parish church of St Peter.
The first church on the site was built in Anglo-Saxon times and fell into ruin during the Norman Invasion in 1066. The Norman lady of the manor Alice de Laci built a second church that 300 years later would be destroyed by raiding Scots.
During the 14th century the church was rebuilt and some of the older masonry may have been used in the reconstruction of the nave. The nave arcades, the oldest parts of the present building, were completed in 1458. A clerestory above them was added by the end of the 15th century. Chantry chapels were founded, on the north side of the chancel by the Leventhorpe family, and on the south by the owners of Bolling Hall. The tower in the Perpendicular style was added to the west end and finished in 1508.

Bradford City Park
Bradford City Park is a public space in the centre of Bradford, West Yorkshire. It is centred around the Grade I listed Bradford City Hall. The city park comprises three main areas (each side of the triangular City Hall site.) To the East of the City Hall is the Norfolk Gardens area. As part of the renovations to City Park an underused concrete footbridge was removed and a new bus canopy was installed. In front of City Hall is Centenary Square. This area was extensively landscaped and now comprises raised lawns, seating and a large area of stone sets. This area is used for exhibition space and market stalls during the European markets. The North-Western corner of the park is the mirror pool and its surrounds. Construction of this section begun in 2011 and was officially opened on 24 March 2012 with an all-day celebratory event featuring Parkour, fireworks, balloons and other attractions
The city park was part of the 'masterplan' for Bradford city centre, a regeneration project first begun in 2003. Several revisions were made to the original plans. Funding was announced by the council in July 2009 and work was begun in December 2009.

Bradford Interchange
Bradford Interchange is a combined railway, coach and bus station in Bradford, West Yorkshire England. Designed in 1962 and hailed as a showpiece of European design, the building was opened in 1971.
The main entrance with the taxi rank and car park is on a lower level, while the train platforms and bus/coach stops are on a split upper level, both separate with pedestrian access. Downstairs, in the central concourse, there are a few shops, a newsagent, a cafe and sandwich shop and a fast food outlet on the train platforms, where hot drinks are also available. Toilets are located off the main concourse.
There is also a British Transport Police office and lost luggage desk, provided for passengers' concern and safety at the railway station, with a separate security and lost-luggage unit for bus travellers, on the bus concourse. A smoking ban is observed in all parts of Bradford interchange, and CCTV is also in operation with security officers and police regularly patrolling the station.
The railway station has 4 platforms and a short bay that was previously used for the Red Star parcels facility. Platforms 1 and 2 have a run-round facility for locomotive hauled trains (mainly freight services). The track layout and associated signalling was remodelled during the course of a week-long engineering blockade from 25 October to 3 November 2008 to permit higher speeds on both routes into the station and also allow trains to approach the station from both Leeds and Halifax simultaneously (something that was not possible with the old track configuration).

Bradford Moor is an electoral ward in the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council. It is in the BD3 postcode area.
The ward covers the areas of Bradford known as Bradford Moor, Laisterdyke and Thornbury. It is bordered on the west by Barkerend and the south by Bowling (both part of the same ward); on the north side is Eccleshill ward and on the east is the Pudsey area of Leeds. The Brontë Country is a name given to an area of south Pennine hills west of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England. The name comes from the Brontë sisters, who wrote such literary classics as Jane Eyre (Charlotte Brontë), Wuthering Heights (Emily Brontë), and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Anne Brontë) while living in the area.
The geology of the Brontë country is mainly gritstone. There are several places of rugged natural beauty and historical interest.
The area includes the village of Haworth, where the Brontë sisters lived, and where the Brontë Parsonage Museum is located today. Top Withens is said to have been the inspiration for Wuthering Heights. There is a historic factory outlet called Ponden Mill near Ponden Hall ('Thrushcross Grange' in Wuthering Heights) about half a mile outside Stanbury. Thornton, on the outskirts of Bradford, is the birthplace of the Brontë sisters and their brother Branwell (their father was rector of Thornton church). The house where they were born still exists as the Brontë Birthplace and is open to visitors by appointment.

Burley-in-Wharfedale, is a village in the county of West Yorkshire, England. Along with Menston, Burley is part of Wharfedale Ward in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford (though it has a Leeds postcode). It lies on the A65, approximately fourteen miles north-west of the centre of Leeds and nine miles north of Bradford, between Otley and Ilkley. Burley has a railway station on the Wharfedale line, with direct trains to Leeds, Bradford and Ilkley. It has a population of 5,865.
Despite the good transport links to local urban areas Burley in Wharfedale retains its rural feel and setting in the green Wharfedale valley.
The village is adjoined by Burley Woodhead, a small cluster of farms and prestigious homes at the foot of Burley Moor.
Originally a small agricultural community with likely Roman and Anglo-Saxon[citation needed] roots, Burley developed in the late 18th and 19th centuries into an industrial village with many residents employed at the cotton mills known as Greenholme Mills, which were powered from a goit fed from the River Wharfe.

Buttershaw is a residential area of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It is bounded by Horton Bank Top to the north, Wibsey to the east, Woodside to the South and Shelf to the west.
Buttershaw consists mostly of 1940s council housing with the building starting in 1947 and continuing until the 1960s. These parts of Buttershaw gained notability in 1986 when they were featured as the setting for most of the scenes in the film Rita, Sue and Bob Too, based on plays by local resident Andrea Dunbar. The estate gained something of a cult status thanks to the film, although at first there was much discontent among local people who complained that it further tarnished the estate's already undesirable reputation. Since the 1980s, many of the older homes around Buttershaw (including some of the blocks of flats that appeared in several of the film's scenes) have been demolished to be replaced by new homes.
The original settlement of Buttershaw was about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east, which is why Buttershaw's church of St Pauls is in Wibsey. The settlement moved west in the 19th Century with the building of Bottomley's mill on Halifax Road and the construction of workers' cottages (such as Bottomley St) adjacent to the existing settlement of Beck Hill.

Canterbury Cathedral
Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England and forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury.
Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt 1070-77. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the twelfth century, and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174. The Norman nave and transepts survived until the late fourteenth century, when they were demolished to make way for the present structures.
The cathedral's first archbishop was Augustine of Canterbury, previously abbot of St. Andrew's Benedictine Abbey in Rome. He was sent by Pope Gregory the Great in 596 as a missionary to the Anglo-Saxons. Augustine founded the cathedral in 597 and dedicated it to Jesus Christ, the Holy Saviour.

Cartwright Hall
Cartwright Hall is the civic art gallery in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, situated about a mile from the city centre in the Manningham district. The gallery was opened in 1904 with a collection of Victorian and Edwardian works donated by Samuel Lister. It is named after Edmund Cartwright.
Cartwright Hall stands in Lister Park and enjoys scenic views of the city. Cartwright Hall has been held to represent "Bradford Baroque", a style of architecture typical of Bradford. However, it was designed by the same architects as Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, also in the Baroque style: perhaps the architecture of both buildings is best seen in a national context.
The purpose-built gallery is home to a notable collection of permanent works, from Old Masters to 20th Century British painters and sculptors. Cartwright Hall also houses contemporary exhibitions by local, national and international artists, historical exhibitions, craft and media arts, and a biennial open exhibition. Cliffe Castle Museum
Cliffe Castle Museum, Keighley, West Yorkshire, England, is a local heritage museum which opened in the grand, Victorian, neo-Gothic Cliffe Castle in 1959. The museum is the successor to Keighley Museum which opened in Eastwood House, Keighley, in ca.1892. There is a series of galleries dedicated to various aspects of local heritage, and to displaying the house itself. Entrance to the museum is free of charge.
It is believed that Keighley Museum was established in 1892, because that is when its first location, Eastwood House, Keighley, was purchased for the public. In 1950 the local benefactor Sir Bracewell Smith purchased Cliffe Castle, and had it redesigned as a museum and art gallery for the people of Keighley. The museum re-opened as Cliffe Castle Museum and Art Gallery in 1959.
The original Cliffe Hall was built by Christopher Netherwood between 1828 and 1833, and designed by George Webster of Kendal, a gothic revivalist. The Butterfields, a textile manufacturing family, bought Cliffe Hall in 1848. Henry Butterfield transformed the building by adding towers, a ballroom and conservatories from 1875 to 1880, renaming it Cliffe Castle in 1878. He decorated the building with the griffin motif, which he had adopted as a heraldic crest.

The name Denholme is probably of Viking origin, translating to "A flat amongst the hillside". This is a good description of the village's geographical setting, since it is located in a broad side valley extending southwards from that of the River Aire - the Aire Valley or Airedale. Denholme is also on the eastern flank of the Pennines, commonly known as the "backbone of England", about midway along their length.
The village sits astride the old Roman Road from Manchester (Mamucium) to Ilkley (Olicana) though there is no evidence of any settlement then. The line of the road is visible on the ground to the south of the village, not far from St Paul's church.

Derwent Valley Mills
Derwent Valley Mills is a World Heritage Site along the River Derwent in Derbyshire, England, designated in December 2001. It is administered by the Derwent Valley Mills Partnership. The modern factory, or 'mill', system was born here in the 18th century to accommodate the new technology for spinning cotton developed by Richard Arkwright. With advancements in technology, it became possible to produce cotton continuously. The system was adopted throughout the valley, and later spread so that by 1788 there were over 200 Arkwright-type mills in Britain. Arkwright's inventions and system of organising labour was exported to Europe and the United States.
Water-power was first introduced to England by John Lombe at his silk mill in Derby in 1719, but it was Richard Arkwright who applied water-power to the process of producing cotton in the 1770s. His patent of a water frame allowed cotton to be spun continuously and meant it could be produced by unskilled workers. Cromford Mill and Cromford was the site of Arkwright's first mill, and his system of production and worker's housing was copied throughout the valley. To ensure the presence of a labour force, it was necessary to construct housing for the mill workers. Thus, new settlements were established by mill owners around the mills – sometimes developing a pre-existing community – with their own amenities such as schools, chapels, and markets. Most of the housing still exists and is still in use. Along with the transport infrastructure form part of the site. A transport infrastructure was built to open new markets for the mills' produce.

Durham Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham (usually known as Durham Cathedral) is a cathedral in the city of Durham, England, the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Durham. The Bishopric dates from 995, with the present cathedral being founded in AD 1093. The cathedral is regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with nearby Durham Castle, which faces it across Palace Green.
The present cathedral replaced the 10th century "White Church", built as part of a monastic foundation to house the shrine of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. The treasures of Durham Cathedral include relics of St Cuthbert, the head of St Oswald of Northumbria and the remains of the Venerable Bede. In addition, its Durham Dean and Chapter Library contains one of the most complete sets of early printed books in England, the pre-Dissolution monastic accounts, and three copies of the Magna Carta.
Durham Cathedral occupies a strategic position on a promontory high above the River Wear. From 1080 until the 19th century the bishopric enjoyed the powers of a Bishop Palatine, having military as well as religious leadership and power. Durham Castle was built as the residence for the Bishop of Durham. The seat of the Bishop of Durham is the fourth most significant in the Church of England hierarchy, and he stands at the right hand of the monarch at coronations. Signposts for the modern day County Durham are subtitled "Land of the Prince Bishops."

East and West Morton

The village of East Morton was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The parish of Morton was formally created by an act of Parliament in 1846. West Morton remains largely a collection of farmhouses and cottages spread over a wide area, and sits at the southern foot of Rombalds Moor.
East Morton has a Public House called the Busfeild Arms named after the local Busfeild family who lived in the area in the 19th Century, hence the apparent misspelling of the name. There is also a Church of England Primary School and St. Luke's church dating back to only 1851, when it was consecrated for worship.
East Morton has grown substantially in recent years, with several major housing developments, including 'Waterside Fold' which adjoins the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The village also incorporates a golf course called Fardew and a recreational playground (with swings).

East Bowling
East Bowling is an area of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, located approximately one mile south of Bradford city centre. It is roughly bordered by Wakefield Road, Rooley Lane and Bowling Hall Road/ Hall Lane.
In the centre of East Bowling is Bowling Park, Bradford with its fossil tree, and the nearby Bolling Hall museum. Churches of several faiths fall within the area. These include St John's Anglican, and New Hey Road Methodist. St Ann's Roman Catholic Church was closed in 1996 and the parish amalgamated with St Joseph, Manchester Road. Bowling Cemetery is situated to the south on the ring road.
When the area was first constructed, it was a well-to-do part of Bradford, and built at a time when the city was thriving. In recent years East Bowling has become rather run-down. The housing stock in the area is mainly late Victorian Terrace houses, built around 1900, with some more modern houses.
East Bowling is also home to X Factor's Zayn Malik who is a member of boyband One Direction. Gareth Gates also grew up in East Bowling.

East Riddlesden Hall
East Riddlesden Hall is a 17th century manor house in Keighley, West Yorkshire, now owned by the National Trust. The hall was built in 1642 by a wealthy Halifax clothier, James Murgatroyd. There is a medieval tithebarn in the grounds.
East Riddlesden Hall perches on a small plateau overlooking a bend in the River Aire on its way downstream from the town of Keighley. Interesting features include well-restored living accommodation on two floors, two Yorkshire Rose windows, walled garden, the ruined Starkie wing and several ghosts (reputedly). A hiding place for Catholic priests was installed during the 16th century.
The property was extended and re-built by James Murgatroyd and his wife Hannah, using local Yorkshire stone, in 1648. He also built other stone manor houses throughout the West Riding of Yorkshire. In the great hall, a small fireplace can be seen above the main fire place, where the floor for the first floor accommodation was not built. James Murgatroyd was a Royalist and this can be seen in royalist symbols and graffiti on and in the building. For example, the Bothy (now the tea room and shop) has the heads of Charles I of England and Henrietta Maria of France carved in the top most stone work.

Eldwick

Eldwick is a small village near Bingley, West Yorkshire. It is split up into two main parts, Eldwick, the main populated part, and High Eldwick, the larger but less populated section, situated on Bingley Moor.
High Eldwick is the site of Olympic jockey Harvey Smith's stables, and the locally famous Dick Hudson's pub.
In Eldwick, the most notable place is the Memorial Hall, built from old bricks from the textile mill. The bell has never been found, and a popular local mystery surrounds this case.
The town has Eldwick Beck running through it flows through the pedestrian-only thoroughfare of Spa Lane. The name has come to refer to the part of the village just before entry into High Eldwick, near the Methodist Church and The Acorn Pub. Much of the village is situated upon a steep hill, with the steepest part accessible to vehicles is 17%, indicated by a sign near the top and bottom. The Prince of Wales Park runs past this part of the hill. The road follows a sharp curve around the area, making the road dangerous to navigate in the wet.

Esholt is a village between Shipley and Guiseley, in the metropolitan district of the City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.
The name "Esholt" indicates that the village was first established in a heavily wooded area of ash trees.[citation needed]
In the 12th century, the Esholt estate was owned by Syningthwaite Priory, and a nunnery was established there at Lower Esholt.
When the nunnery was dissolved in about 1540 the estate was granted by Edward IV to Henry Thompson. The original manor house, Esholt Old Hall at Upper Esholt is medieval in origin, probably 16th century, and possibly once moated. It is well preserved and has Grade II* listed building protection.
Historically part of the parish of Guiseley, the church of St Paul was once the private chapel of the old manor house. The church was rebuilt in 1839.
In the 17th century the Thompson heiress married Walter Calverley (1629–1694) and in 1709 their son Walter built a new Queen Anne style mansion house, Esholt Hall, on the site of the old nunnery.

Gough Island

To the south of Greengates is Ravenscliffe with the village of Eccleshill beyond that. The village of Apperley Bridge lies to the north. To the east in the City of Leeds is the village of Calverley.
To the west of Greengates is Albion Mills a historic textile mill, destroyed by fire on 10 March 1911 but evidently rebuilt. In 1931 the Bradford trolleybus routes were extended from Idle to Greengates with the service running along Albion Road and Leeds Road. In 1928 a purpose built 595 seat cinema 'Greengates Cinema' was constructed on New Line. It closed in 1959 and is now an Asda Foodstores.
Greengates is situated largely in the Idle and Thackley ward and partly in the Eccleshill ward. It is represented as part of the parliamentary constituency of Bradford East.

Greenwich is notable for its maritime history and for giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian (0° longitude) and Greenwich Mean Time. The town became the site of a royal palace, the Palace of Placentia from the 15th century, and was the birthplace of many in the House of Tudor, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The palace fell into disrepair during the English Civil War and was rebuilt as the Royal Naval Hospital for Sailors by Sir Christopher Wren and his assistant Nicholas Hawksmoor. These buildings became the Royal Naval College in 1873, and they remained an establishment for military education until 1998 when they passed into the hands of the Greenwich Foundation. The historic rooms within these buildings remain open to the public; other buildings are used by University of Greenwich and the Trinity College of Music.

Haworth is a rural village in the City of Bradford metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England. It is located amongst the Pennines, 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of Keighley and 10 miles (16 km) west of Bradford. The surrounding areas include Oakworth and Oxenhope. Nearby villages include Cross Roads, Stanbury and Lumbfoot.
Haworth is a tourist attraction, best known for its association with the Brontë sisters.
Haworth is first mentioned as a settlement in 1209. The name may refer to a "hedged enclosure" or "hawthorn enclosure". The name was recorded as "Howorth" on a 1771 map.
Haworth's only traditional events were an annual service at Haworth Spa and the rush bearing. Spa Sunday died out in the early 20th century and the rush bearing ceremony has not been held for about twenty years. One of the modern events organised by the Haworth Traders' Association is "Scroggling the Holly" – an annual holly gathering event that takes place each November in Haworth. At the start of the festive season bands and Morris men lead a procession of children in Victorian costume, who follow the Holly Queen up the cobbles to her crowning ceremony on the church steps. The newly crowned Holly Queen unlocks the church gates to invite the spirit of Christmas into Haworth. Father Christmas then arrives bringing with him glad tidings and Christmas cheer to all.

Horsfall Stadium
Horsfall Stadium is a sports stadium located just off Halifax Road in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, approximately three miles south-east of the city centre. It is currently the home of Bradford Park Avenue Football Club and Bradford Airedale Athletics Club.
It was originally built as a running track in 1931. It was upgraded for football when Bradford Park Avenue moved to the stadium in 1994. The track was upgraded to a synthetic surface at the same time.
In 2007, there was a number of improvements made to the ground including a new directors' and sponsors' room, a meeting room for the players and management, a new medical room, kit room and toilets. In addition, fully monitored CCTV has been installed to protect the facility and prevent the vandalism that has plagued the ground in previous seasons. The main stand was also recently reseated with seats 1,800 coming from Lord's Cricket Ground. These changes were made due to new stringent ground grading requirements of the Football Association.

Ilkley is a spa town and civil parish in West Yorkshire, in the north of England. Ilkley's spa town heritage and surrounding countryside make tourism an important local industry. The town centre is characterised by Victorian architecture, wide streets and floral displays. Ilkley Moor, to the south of the town, is the subject of a folk song, often described as the unofficial anthem of Yorkshire, "On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at". The song's words are written in Yorkshire dialect, its title translated as "On Ilkley Moor without a hat."
The earliest evidence of habitation in the Ilkley area is flint arrowheads or microliths, dating to the Mesolithic period, from about 11,000 BC onwards. The area around Ilkley has been continuously settled since at least the early Bronze Age, around 1800 BC; more than 250 cup and ring marks, and swastika carvings dating to the period have been found on rock outcrops, and archaeological remains of dwellings are found on Ilkley Moor. A druidical stone circle, the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle, was constructed 2,000 years ago.

Ilkley Moor
Ilkley Moor is part of Rombalds Moor, the moorland between Ilkley and Keighley in West Yorkshire, England. The moor, which rises to 402 m (1,319 ft) above sea level is famous as the inspiration for the Yorkshire "county anthem" On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at.
During the Carboniferous period (325 million years ago), Ilkley Moor was part of a sea level swampy area fed by meandering river channels coming from the north. The layers in the eroded bank faces of stream gullies in the area represent sea levels with various tides depositing different sorts of sediment. Over a long period of time the sediments were cemented and compacted into hard rock layers. Geological forces lifted and tilted the strata a little towards the south-east, producing many small fractures, or faults. Since the end of the Carboniferous time there has been erosion and more than a thousand metres of the coal-bearing rocks have been completely removed from the area. During the last million years, Ice Age glaciers modified the shape of the Wharfe valley, deepening it, smoothing it and leaving behind glacial debris. The millstone grit not only gives character to the town of Ilkley but gives the area its acid soils, heather moors, soft water and rocky scars.

Ilkley Toy Museum
Ilkley Toy Museum in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, houses a private collection of toys dating from 350 BCE to modern times, and is open to the public, schools and groups. It opens at weekends: see the website for weekday opening times, appointments and admission charges.
At the back is a 1940s English working model fairground automaton, which goes into action when one purchases a token and puts it in the slot placed under the window. See it working here. There is also a Hornby clockwork train lift.
In this gallery is a large display of furnished dolls' houses, mainly Victorian, and mainly from Germany and England. They include Stafford House (1830) (see image), possibly named after Lancaster House, which was then a topical subject, being still in the process of building. There is an unusual dolls' house of Georgian appearance, with great, twisted pillars at the front, and Georgian furnishings and figures.
Some of these dolls' houses are miniature shop displays, with minuscule and delicate objects on counters and shelves. There is thin glassware; there are miniature dolls; there is a tiny shopkeeper with little steel needles, holding real knitting. Tiny modern pieces of delicate crochet or tatting hang in some of these little shops as cloths and bags. The display includes a pet shop (see image) and butcher's shop (see image).

Inaccessible Island
Inaccessible Island is an extinct volcano (last active 6 million years ago) with Cairn Peak reaching 449 m. The island is 14 km² (5.5 sq mi) in area, rising out of the South Atlantic Ocean 45 km (28 mi) southwest of Tristan da Cunha. Throughout its history it has had no permanent population[citation needed] and together with Gough Island is a protected wildlife reserve which has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Inaccessible Island was first discovered in January 1656 during a voyage by 't Nachtglas, a Dutch ship under the command of Jan Jacobszoon, 146 years after Tristan da Cunha was first sighted by Portuguese sailors. Jacobszoon originally named it 'Nachtglas' island.

Ingrow

Ironbridge Gorge
The Ironbridge Gorge is a deep gorge formed by the River Severn in Shropshire, England.
Originally called the Severn Gorge, the gorge now takes its name from its famous Iron Bridge, the first iron bridge of its kind in the world, and a monument to the industry that began there. The bridge was built in 1779 to link the industrial town of Broseley with the smaller mining town of Madeley and the growing industrial centre of Coalbrookdale.
There are two reasons the site was so useful to the early industrialists. The raw materials, coal, iron ore, limestone and clay, for the manufacture of iron, tiles and porcelain are exposed or easily mined in the gorge. The deep and wide river allowed easy transport of products to the sea.
The gorge carries the River Severn south towards the Bristol Channel. It was formed during the last ice age when the output from the previously north flowing river became trapped in a lake (Lake Lapworth) created when the Irish Sea ice sheet dammed the river. The level of the lake rose until it was able to flow over the hills to the south. This flow eroded a path through the hills forming the gorge and permanently diverting the Severn southwards.

Judy Woods
Judy Woods is a complex of woodlands in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. Individual woodlands in the complex include Jagger Park Wood, Royds Hall Great Wood, Old Hanna Wood and Low Wood.
The woodlands are situated on Coal Measures, and present in the woodlands are numerous bell pits, which have been used to provide coal.
The woods are named after Judy North, who lived nearby in the 1850s and 1860s, and whose family had managed part of the site since the early 19th century.

Jurassic Coast

The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site on the English Channel coast of southern England. The site stretches from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset, a distance of 153 kilometres (95 mi). Chartered in 2001, the Jurassic coast was the second wholly natural World Heritage Site to be designated in the United Kingdom. Its entire length can be walked on the South West Coast Path.
The Jurassic Coast consists of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous cliffs, spanning the Mesozoic Era, documenting 180 million years of geological history.
The site shows excellent examples of landforms, including the natural arch at Durdle Door, the cove and limestone folding at Lulworth Cove and an island, the Isle of Portland. Chesil Beach is a fine example of both a tombolo (a deposition landform in which an island is attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar) and a storm beach (a beach affected by particularly fierce waves). The site has stretches of both concordant and discordant coastlines. Due to the quality of the varied geology, the site is the subject of international field studies. This area was home to Mary Anning, a palaeontologist who studied the fossils of the coastline around Lyme Regis and discovered the first complete Ichthyosaur fossil at the Spittles.

Laisterdyke is an area of Bradford, West Yorkshire situated to the east of the city on the border with Leeds and located in the Bradford Moor ward and in the East Bradford parliamentary constituency. Laisterdyke borders Barkerend, Bradford Moor area, Thornbury, Tyersal, and Bowling.
The Leeds-Bradford railway line passes through Laisterdyke however Laisterdyke railway station itself was closed to passengers in 1966.
At Laisterdyke was a complex set of junctions controlled by Laisterdyke East and Laisterdyke West signal boxes on the Leeds-Bradford line.
In 1875 the Great Northern Railway opened its Laisterdyke - Shipley branch railway, a six mile double track branch line from Quarry Gap junction to Shipley and Windhill railway station, passing Eccleshill, Idle and Thackley railway stations however the line wasn't competitive and after 1913 was made single line freight only, and progressively closed from 1966 to 1968.
In 1911 Britain's first trolleybus service commenced operation between Laisterdyke and Dudley Hill. The service stopped in 1972, the last trolleybus service in the UK.

Lister Mills
Lister's Mill (otherwise known as Manningham Mills) was the largest silk factory in the world. It is located in the Manningham district of Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK and was built by Samuel Cunliffe Lister to replace the original Manningham Mills that were destroyed by fire in 1871. The mill is a Grade II* listed building, built in the Italianate style of Victorian architecture.
At its height, Lister's employed 11,000 men, women and children - manufacturing high-quality textiles such as velvet and silk. It supplied 1,000 yards (910 m) of velvet for King George V's coronation and in 1976 new velvet curtains for the President Ford White House. The 1890-91 strike at the mill was important in the establishment of the Independent Labour Party which later helped found the modern-day Labour Party. On completion in 1873, Lister's Mill was the largest textile mill in North England. Floor space in the mill amounts to 27 acres (109,000 m²), and its imposing shape remains a dominant feature of the Bradford skyline. The chimney of the mill is 255 feet (78 m) high, and can be seen from most areas of Bradford.

Lister Park
Lister Park (also known as Manningham Park) is a picturesque public park in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, between Manningham, Heaton and Frizinghall. It has won various national awards.
It is situated about a mile outside the city centre on Manningham Lane, the main road between Bradford and Shipley. It is one of the city's largest parks and was donated to the City of Bradford by Samuel Cunliffe Lister, who built Lister's Mill. The park has been successfully renovated in recent years. The lake has been re-opened for boats and a Mughal Water Garden constructed. There are also tennis and basketball courts, bowling greens and a children's playground.
Lister Park contains the Cartwright Hall art gallery, where permanent and temporary exhibitions of modern and traditional art can be seen.
It was voted Britain's Best Park for 2006, and nominated for the Best Park In Europe 2006.

Little Horton (population 17,368 - 2001 UK census) is a Ward in Bradford Metropolitan District in the county of West Yorkshire, England, named after the de Horton family, who were once Lords of the Manor.
As well as the area of Little Horton, the electoral ward includes the area of West Bowling, Marshfields and the Canterbury housing estate.
Little Horton is located on gently sloping land to the south east of Bradford. The area has an ancient history and is a pre-industrial settlement. It was originally an area of farmland, but the soil was so poor that arable crop farming was nearly impossible. As a result the people in the settlement had to find other means of making a living from the earliest times through manufacture and trade.
There are different ideas about what the name Horton means. The word ‘ton’ probably means farm or enclosed farmland[citation needed] and ‘hor’ is thought to mean grey or dirty[citation needed]. The ‘Little’ part of the title only refers to the fact that ‘Little Horton’ covered a smaller area of land than ‘Great Horton’. The two areas together made up the Manor of Horton.

Lumbfoot
Lumbfoot is a hamlet in the City of Bradford metropolitan district, located a mile from Haworth (England) and five minute walking distance from Stanbury. The hamlet itself overlooks some fields and a small stream. There are 15 households and a farm within Lumbfoot. There is no public road, only a public footpath, and vehicles go in and out of Lumbfoot on a private road.
Lumbfoot has its own newspaper, The Lumbfoot Clarion, which reports on local news and events.
The cottages at Lumbfoot were constructed between 1840 and 1852 to house the workers at Lumbfoot Mill in the floor of the valley. Originally water powered, the mill later adopted steam power evidenced by the tall chimney in the photograph from about 1900. The mill has since been largely demolished but a 15 foot stump of the chimney and the engine house (the small building next to the chimney) still remain. There is evidence of the pit that housed the original waterwheel among the ruins of the mill.
The East row of cottages (built in 1852) is shown in the picture from an old postcard believed to date from the 1900's. It is interesting to compare this with a similar view taken recently. The cottages have been modernised but are still very recognisable.

M62 motorway
The M62 motorway is a west–east trans-Pennine motorway in Northern England, connecting Liverpool and Hull via Manchester and Leeds. The road also forms part of the unsigned Euroroutes E20 (Shannon to Saint Petersburg) and E22 (Holyhead to Ishim). The road is 107 miles (172 km) long; for 7 miles (11 km), it shares its route with the M60 motorway around Manchester. The motorway, which was first proposed in the 1930s, and originally conceived as two separate routes, was built in stages between 1971 and 1976, with construction beginning at Pole Moor and finishing in Tarbock on the outskirts of Liverpool. The motorway also absorbed the northern end of the Stretford-Eccles bypass, which was built between 1957 and 1960. Adjusted for inflation to 2007, the motorway cost approximately £765 million to build. The motorway is relatively busy, with an average daily traffic flow of 100,000 cars in Yorkshire, and has several areas prone to gridlock, in particular, between Leeds and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.

Manor House Museum
Manor House Museum, Ilkley, England, is a local heritage museum, art gallery and education centre, established in 1892 to preserve local archaeological artefacts after the spa town expanded and much Roman material was lost. Menston is a village and civil parish in the county of West Yorkshire, England. Along with Burley in Wharfedale, Menston is part of Wharfedale Ward in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford. It has a population of 4,660.
Menston's Anglican parish church is dedicated to St John the Divine, and is part of the Diocese of Bradford. Other notable buildings include High Royds Hospital and St. Mary's Catholic High School, Menston.
The site of High Royds Hospital, originally the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum, which is just inside the City of Leeds metropolitan borough, has been converted to housing called "Highroyds Village". This is a reflection of Menston's growing size. In the past 20 years there has been increased demand for much needed housing in the area. The population of Menston has been steadily increasing. As a result Menston primary school, which was threatened with closure in the 1980s, has increased student numbers.

New Lanark

New Lanark is a village on the River Clyde, approximately 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometres) from Lanark, in South Lanarkshire, and some 40 km southeast of Glasgow, Scotland. It was founded in 1786 by David Dale, who built cotton mills and housing for the mill workers. Dale built the mills there in a brief partnership with the English inventor and entrepreneur Richard Arkwright to take advantage of the water power provided by the only waterfalls on the River Clyde. Under the ownership of a partnership that included Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen, a Welsh philanthropist and social reformer, New Lanark became a successful business and an epitome of utopian socialism as well as an early example of a planned settlement and so an important milestone in the historical development of urban planning.
The New Lanark mills operated until 1968. After a period of decline, the New Lanark Conservation Trust (NLCT) was founded in 1974 (now known as the New Lanark Trust (NLT)) to prevent demolition of the village. By 2006 most of the buildings have been restored and the village has become a major tourist attraction. It is one of five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Scotland and an Anchor Point of ERIH - The European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Oakwood Hall
Oakwood Hall, Bingley, West Yorkshire is a 19th century mansion with substantial interior fittings by the Victorian architect William Burges. The hall was constructed in 1864 by Knowles and Wilcox of Bradford for Thomas Garnett, a prosperous textile merchant. The style is "conventionally dour Gothic"
Garnett had the interiors designed by Burges, who contributed a fireplace, and by William Morris and Co, for whom Edward Burne-Jones created the stained glass St.George in the staircase window, whilst Morris himself has been credited with the surrounding images of The Four Seasons.
The Hall is a Grade II Listed Building as at 6 November 1973 and is now a hotel.

Oakworth
Oakworth is a village in West Yorkshire, England, near Keighley, by the River Worth. The name "Oakworth" indicates that the village was first established in a heavily wooded area.
Oakworth railway station is on the route of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and was a location in the film The Railway Children.
Holden Park in Oakworth occupies the grounds of an historic house owned by Sir Isaac Holden, an inventor who is said to have invented the lucifer match and revolutionised the process of wool carding. After Holden's death in 1897, his house, called Oakworth House, and its contents were sold at auction, and the house was all but destroyed by fire in 1907. All that remains of the original building is the portico.
Oakworth Primary School is situated in the grounds of Sir Isaac Holden's estate, along with Holden Park. The school playground has sloping sides because it was once a lake in the ornamental gardens in front of Oakworth House.[citation needed] The school is attended by children aged between 3 - 11. It has gone through many changes since it was first built. Its original name was 'Oakworth First School', which taught children up to the age of 9, when children would then progress to middle school. This system changed in 2000, so that Oakworth Primary School expanded to cover years 5 and 6.[citation needed]

Oakworth Hall
Oakworth Hall is located in Oakworth, West Yorkshire, England. The manor house was rebuilt in the 17th century, but has a history dating back to 1066. The building overlooks the Worth Valley, facing south towards Haworth.
Nearby is Holden Park, which was the site of Oakworth House and its grounds, once owned by Sir Isaac Holden, an inventor who is said to have invented the lucifer match and revolutionised the process of carding wool. He also owned Oakworth Hall.
The Hall is located on the corner of Providence Lane, which once ran through the Hall's farmyard. The cornerstone on the north rear wall, above the door of the farm cottage, is one of four found in the district commissioned by John Craven in July 1843.
Of important historical interest is a carved stone panel of a mounted huntsman of either Celtic origins or Romano-British of the first centuries CE. Accompanying the huntsman there are three small animals which might be taken to be dogs, but in the History of Keighley they are described as "three goats trippant". A goat is featured on the coat of arms on one branch of the Copley family who were early residents of the Hall. The panel may be even earlier, perhaps pre-Roman Iron Age. Two crude heads, which are thought to be of the same period, flank the carving.

Oxenhope

Oxenhope is a village and civil parish with a population of 2,476 near Keighley in the metropolitan borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.Oxenhope railway station is the terminus for the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Each year in summer the village holds The Oxenhope Straw Race, a team event in which competitors complete a 2.5-mile course around the village carrying a bale of straw and stopping at each pub on the route for a pint of beer. Many contestants choose to dress up in costumes. The event benefits local charities and always draws many spectators.
The modern village of Oxenhope encompasses what were originally separate settlements of Uppertown, Lowertown, Leeming and Hawkingstone. The historic hamlets of Marsh and Shaw are also included in modern day Oxenhope. The area became known as Oxenhope because this was the name the railway company gave the station serving the area when the line from Keighley opened in 1867. Until then the name Oxenhope referred to a small settlement between the hamlet of Marsh and the village of Haworth.

Pennine Way

The Pennine Way is a National Trail in England. The trail runs 429 km (267 mi) from Edale, in the northern Derbyshire Peak District, north through the Yorkshire Dales and the Northumberland National Park and ends at Kirk Yetholm, just inside the Scottish border. The path runs along the Pennine hills, sometimes described as the "backbone of England". Although not the United Kingdom's longest National Trail (this distinction belongs to the 1,014 km (630 mi) long South West Coast Path), it is according to the Ramblers' Association "one of Britain's best known and toughest".
The path was the idea of the journalist and rambler Tom Stephenson, inspired by similar trails in the United States of America, particularly the Appalachian Trail. Stephenson proposed the concept in an article for the Daily Herald in 1935, and later lobbied Parliament for the creation of an official trail. The walk was originally planned to end at Wooler but eventually it was decided that Kirk Yetholm would be the finishing point. The final section of the path was declared open in a ceremony held on Malham Moor on 24 April 1965.

Pitcairn Islands
The Pitcairn Islands (
/ˈpɪtkɛərn/;Pitkern: Pitkern Ailen), officially named the Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands, form a group of four volcanic islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. The islands are a British Overseas Territory. The four islands—named Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie, and Oeno—are spread over several hundred miles of ocean and have a total land area of about 18 square miles (47 km2). Only Pitcairn, the second largest and measuring about 2 miles (3.2 km) across, is inhabited.
The islands are best known as home of the descendants of the Bounty mutineers and the Tahitians (or Polynesians) who accompanied them, an event retold in numerous books and films. This history is still apparent in the surnames of many of the islanders. With only about 48 inhabitants (currently from four main families: Christian, Warren, Young, and Brown), Pitcairn is the least populous jurisdiction in the world. The United Nations Committee on Decolonisation includes the Pitcairn Islands on the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories.

Ponden Hall
Ponden Hall is a farm house near Stanbury in West Yorkshire, England. It is famous for reputedly being the inspiration for Thrushcross Grange, the home of the Linton family, Edgar, Isabella, and Cathy in Emily Brontë's novel Wuthering Heights. However, it does not match the description given in the novel and is closer in size and appearance to the farmhouse of Wuthering Heights itself.
The Brontё biographer Winifred Gerin believed that Ponden Hall was the original of Wildfell Hall, the old mansion, where protagonist of another Brontë novel Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Helen Graham fled from her husband. Ponden shares certain architectural details with Wildfell: latticed windows, a central portico and date plaque above.
The "old house" was built in 1634 by Robert Heaton (1587–1641) for his son Michael Anno Domini Heaton (1609–1643). The "old porch and peat house" was later built by Michael's son Robert (1642–1704) and in 1801 the hall was re-built by his great grandson, Robert (1757–1817). The old house was demolished in 1956.

Riddlesden is a village in the county of West Yorkshire, England, near Keighley and on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Most of Riddlesden is made up of hills and steep land, like farms and even woodland. However the access to Riddlesden is good as it has close contacts with various main roads. As well as the roads there are various residential communities. Estimated population is over 300.
East Riddlesden Hall is in the care of the National Trust. It was built in 1642 by a wealthy Halifax clothier, James Murgatroyd. There is a medieval tithebarn in the grounds.
A lot of walkers and campers and various clubs, e.g. Scouts, are attracted to the village because of its sights, such as the peculiarly shaped cliff known as "turtle rock" to locals
East Riddlesden Hall was featured on an episode of the paranormal themed reality television programme Most Haunted.

River Aire
The River Aire is a major river in Yorkshire, England, 71 miles (114 km) in length. Part of the river is canalised, and is known as the Aire and Calder Navigation.
The Aire rises at Malham Tarn, flowing underground to Aire Head, near Malham, in North Yorkshire, and then flows through Gargrave and Skipton. After Cononley, the river enters West Yorkshire where it passes through the former industrial areas of Keighley, Bingley, Saltaire and Shipley. It then passes through Leeds and on to the villages of Swillington and Woodlesford. At Castleford is the confluence of the Aire and Calder; just downstream of the confluence was the ford where the ancient British road, used by the Romans, crossed on its way north to York. The river re-enters North Yorkshire near Knottingley and in its lower reaches forms part of the boundary between North Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
The River Aire empties into the River Ouse at Airmyn, 'myn' being an old English word for 'river mouth'. The name possibly derived from Brythonic *Isara, meaning "strong river". The Aire could have been the winwœd or winwæd written about in Old English, from the Old English elements winnan or win ("strife", "fight") and wæd ("shallow water", "ford"), however others have proposed that it is actually the Went (also called the "wynt" in Old English) or the Cock Beck (see Battle of the Winwaed). Still others have claimed that it is actually the name of the battle and not the body of water itself.

River Wharfe
The River Wharfe is a river in Yorkshire, England. For much of its length it is the county boundary between West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. The name Wharfe is Celtic and means "twisting, winding".
The valley of the River Wharfe is known as Wharfedale. The river source is at Beckermonds, Langstrothdale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and flows through Kettlewell, Grassington, Bolton Abbey, Addingham, Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Otley, Wetherby and Tadcaster. It then flows into the River Ouse near Cawood. The section of the river from its source to around Addingham is known as Upper Wharfedale and has a very different character to the river downstream.
The river is approximately 97 km long before it joins the River Ouse. It is a public navigation from the weir at Tadcaster to its junction with the River Ouse near Cawood and tidal from Ulleskelf.
The river source is the confluence of Oughtershaw Beck and Green Field Beck in Langstrothdale near Beckermonds. It flows east and south east taking the flows from many small streams, whose sources are the shake holes from Yockenthwaite Moor on the north bank and Horse Head Moor on the south bank. After Hubberholme, the river flows south past Buckden and Starbotton and then south east past Kettlewell before flowing south again. Near Conistone are the gentle waterfalls of Scar Lash. Shortly before reaching Grassington, the river turns south east over Linton Falls. South of Appletreewick, the river flows south west for a short distance until it reaches Gill Beck and returns southward. To the north of Bolton Bridge, the river narrows and goes over waterfalls in an area known as The Strid. The river winds south and south east towards Ilkley where it heads east through Otley and Collingham. It briefly flows north to Wetherby before turning south and then south east past Ulleskelf to the confluence with the River Ouse.

Saltaire
Saltaire is a Victorian model village within the City of Bradford Metropolitan District, West Yorkshire, England, by the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. UNESCO has designated the village as a World Heritage Site, and it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
Saltaire was founded in 1851 by Sir Titus Salt, a leading industrialist in the Yorkshire woollen industry. The name of the village is a combination of the founder's surname and the name of the river. Salt moved his business (five separate mills) from Bradford to this site near Shipley to arrange his workers and to site his large textile mill by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the railway. Salt employed the Bradford firm of Lockwood and Mawson as his architects.
A similar project had been started a few years earlier by Edward Akroyd at Copley, also in West Yorkshire. The cotton mill village of New Lanark, which is also a World Heritage site, was founded by David Dale in 1786.
Salt built neat stone houses for his workers (much better than the slums of Bradford), wash-houses with tap water, bath-houses, a hospital and an institute for recreation and education, with a library, a reading room, a concert hall, billiard room, science laboratory and a gymnasium. The village had a school for the children of the workers, almshouses, allotments, a park and a boathouse. Because of this combination of houses, employment and social services the original town is often seen as an important development in the history of 19th century urban planning.

Salts Mill
Salt's Mill (or Salts Mill) is an art gallery, shopping and restaurant complex located in Saltaire, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It is inside a former mill, built by Sir Titus Salt. It is now run by Helen Kelly. The 1853 gallery takes its name from the date of the building in which it is housed. Salt's Mill displays many paintings by local artist David Hockney, and also provides offices for Pace plc.
When completed, it was the largest industrial building in the world by total floor area. It is a grade II* listed building. The mill closed in 1986, with renovation beginning the following year.
The spellings Salts Mill and Salt's Mill (that is, with and without an apostrophe) are both commonly used. The former is used consistently by the Salts Mill website[1] and the Saltaire Village website;[2] the latter by Visit Bradford from the official Bradford Tourist Information service.[3] Both versions are used in the UNESCO World Heritage documentation.[4]

Shipley Glen Tramway
The Shipley Glen Tramway is a historic funicular tramway situated in the wooded Shipley Glen near the village of Saltaire in the English county of West Yorkshire.
The lower station of the funicular is some 600 metres (2,000 ft) by foot from Saltaire railway station, and a similar distance from the historic Salts Mill, now occupied by shops and restaurants as well as the David Hockney gallery.
The line is operated by volunteer staff on behalf of a charitable trust. It normally operates only on Sunday afternoons.
The line was opened in 1895 by Sam Wilson, a local publican, showman and entrepreneur. It was intended to ease access to a number of other, now long closed, atttractions at Shipley Glen, including a wooden toboggan ride and a Japanese garden. As built, the line was powered by a gas engine. Since 1928 the line has been electrically operated.
In 2002, operation of the line was taken over by a charitable trust under a lease from Bradford City Council. The line was closed in 2009, and has been rebuilt to bring it up to modern safety standards. This involved fitting the two tramcars with new chassis, wheels and decks, relaying the track, and improving braking systems on both cars and haulage drum. The line reopened in 2011.

Silsden

Silsden is a town and civil parish situated in West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the northern slope of the Aire Valley between Keighley and Skipton. It is about 0.6 miles (1 km) from the river. Along the lower edge of the town is the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The town has a population of 7,999.
Silsden was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book (Siglesdene) as the most important village in Craven.
Generally an agricultural area, industry came with the canal and the Industrial Revolution. The town hosted a number of mills none of which now operate in their original form. There is still industry in the town, some in old mill buildings and some in a new industrial estate between the town and the river. The town retains some manufacturing.
In 1911 there was a riot in Silsden when the locals attacked the police station. A very unpopular policeman had been too enthusiastic in his duties. Questions were raised in the House of Commons and it was reported in the national press. The policeman was removed from the town and no more trouble occurred. During the 1940s a hostel was built where the fire station now stands on Elliot Street to house the refugees and PoW from various countries and various camps. In 1998 a hoard of 27 gold coins dating back to the 1st century AD were found in the town and subsequently valued at £20,000 by experts appointed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

Stanbury
Stanbury is a small village in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England, west of Haworth, close to the Pennine Way, and on the River Worth. It is approximately 4 miles from the town of Keighley. The surrounding countryside is mainly moors and farmland, but the Brontë waterfall and Top Withens tourist attraction are within walking distance. Emily Brontë is reputed to have used Top Withens as the model for the location of Wuthering Heights, and nearby Ponden Hall (half a mile from the back end of Stanbury) has long been considered the model for Thrushcross Grange in the same book.
There is a school and an Anglican church in Stanbury village. The school caters for primary school age children. There are also two pubs within Stanbury, the Wuthering Heights (formerly, and locally, known as the Cross) and the Friendly. The Old Silent Inn (formerly The Eagle) is a pub and guest house located walking distance from the village.
Lumbfoot is a tiny hamlet located five minutes walking distance from Stanbury.

Studley Royal including the ruins of Fountains Abbey is a designated World Heritage Site in North Yorkshire, England. The site, which has an area of 323 hectares (800 acres) features an 18th century landscaped garden, some of the largest Cistercian ruins in Europe, a Jacobean mansion and a Victorian church designed by William Burges. It was developed around the ruins of the Cistercian Fountains Abbey.
Fountains Abbey was founded in 1132 by Benedictine monks who left St Mary's Abbey, York to follow the Cistercian order. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 by Henry VIII, the Abbey buildings and over 500 acres (200 ha) of land were sold by the Crown to Sir Richard Gresham, a merchant. The property was passed down through several generations of Sir Richard's family, then sold to Stephen Proctor who built Fountains Hall probably between 1598 and 1604. The hall is a Jacobean mansion, built partly with stone from the Abbey ruins. Fountains Abbey mill is the only 12th-century Cistercian cornmill left in the UK and the oldest 'intact' building on the estate.

The village of Thackley is a small suburban area to the north of the city of Bradford, West Yorkshire in England. The village is loosely bordered by the village of Idle to the south, to the west by the West Royd area of Shipley and elsewhere by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Thackley is the northernmost part of Bradford south of the river Aire.
An archaeological project during 2009 funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, revealed the site in Buck Wood of an enclosure that was in use as a settlement from Neolithic to post-Roman times.[citation needed]
The work, undertaken by The Friends of Buck Wood led by professional archaeologists, showed that in the past a substantial wall had been built of local unworked stone, enclosing a natural terrace of level ground now surrounded by woods. This formed an oval enclosure, roughly 82 m by 78 m in size. The remains of a quern for grinding grain was also found within this central area, as was a single carved rock. Leading away from the enclosure is an orthostat wall of large stones, part of a network of such walls in the wood. Throughout the adjacent woodland several carved rocks were found, and other objects such as a quern stone show that from Neolithic times there were people living in and around Buck Wood.

The Gatehaus

Developed by Asquith Properties, construction began in 2005 and was completed in May 2007. The total cost of the project was £22 million. It has won a number of awards, including 'building of the year' at the Bradford District Design Awards[1].
The Gatehaus was originally proposed as a 17 storey landmark building, however, due to proximity to the historic Little Germany area of Bradford, the original scheme was considered too overbearing and was reduced in height to match the Victorian structures. It now stands at 35m.
There are 138 residential flats ranging from one to three bedroom apartments and penthouses.[2]. The Gatehaus has been described as integrating 'innovating development' [3], this includes the option of leased car parking as well as nearby public transport services [4].

Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London, England. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison since at least 1100, although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.

Transperience
Transperience was a short-lived museum of passenger transport located at Low Moor, in the south of Bradford, England. It opened in July 1995, but closed only 2 years later in October 1997, with debts of over £1 million.
The museum was built on the site of Low Moor railway station, (which had closed in 1965), at a cost of £11.5 million. It included a 1 kilometre (1,100 yd) tram line which made use of the trackbed of the Spen Valley Line towards Cleckheaton, and visitors could ride on a Hungarian tram or a trolleybus. There was also a series of vehicle simulators and an auditorium.
The museum failed to attract the numbers of visitors hoped and was closed in 1997.
The museum site was sold to a property developer in 1998 and is now an industrial estate. Some parts of the museum, such as the auditorium, still stand. A number of the vehicles in its collection have been sold to other collections, such as the Keighley Bus Museum.
The land used by the museum is likely to go full circle, as Metro plans to re-open Low Moor station to passenger use in 2012.

Tristan da Cunha
Tristan da Cunha ( /ˈtrɪstən də ˈkuːnə/) is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha which also includes Saint Helena 2,430 kilometres (1,510 mi) to its north, and equatorial Ascension Island even farther removed.
Tristan da Cunha is a remote volcanic group of islands in the south Atlantic Ocean and the main island of that group. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying 2,816 kilometres (1,750 mi) from the nearest land, South Africa, and 3,360 kilometres (2,088 mi) from South America. The territory consists of the main island of Tristan da Cunha itself, which measures about 11.27 kilometres (7.0 mi) across and has an area of 98 square kilometres (37.8 sq mi), along with the uninhabited Nightingale Islands and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible Island and Gough Island. It has a permanent population of 275 (2009 figures).
The islands were first sighted in 1506 by Portuguese explorer Tristão da Cunha, although rough seas prevented a landing. He named the main island after himself, Ilha de Tristão da Cunha, which was later anglicised to Tristan da Cunha Island.

Tyersal

Tyersal is a village 2 miles (3 km) east of Bradford and 8 miles (13 km) west of Leeds and has a population of 2,605 according to Bradford Community Statistics Project.
The district is split between both City of Bradford metropolitan borough and Pudsey in the City of Leeds metropolitan borough.
Tyersal joined Bradford in 1882 and part of it became part of the Leeds metropolitan district in 1974.
On Tyersal Road there are six shops, including a Newsagents, Pharmacy, Sun Tanning Shop and a Takeaway.
Currently there is the 630 service, operated by First, which terminates at the top. Service 508 from Leeds to Halifax operated also by First, is half-hourly along Dick Lane at the bottom of Tyersal. Previously, service 66 (operated by First and then Centrebus) provided buses to Leeds and back (there were four services daily), although 2010 saw this service withdrawn, and now service 508 is the only remaining bus to Leeds.
New Pudsey railway station is around two and a half miles north east of the village by road, where services are operated by Northern to Manchester Victoria, Blackpool North, Wakefield Westgate, York and Selby.

Valley Parade
Valley Parade, also known as the Coral Windows Stadium through sponsorship rights, is an all-seater football stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It was built in 1886, and was the home of Manningham Rugby Football Club until 1903, when they changed code from rugby football to association football and became Bradford City. It has been Bradford City's home since, although it is now owned by former chairman Gordon Gibb's pension fund. It has also been home to Bradford (Park Avenue) for one season, and Bradford Bulls rugby league side for two seasons, as well as host to a number of England youth team fixtures.
Football architect Archibald Leitch was commissioned to redevelop the ground when Bradford City were promoted to the First Division in 1908. From then, the stadium underwent few changes until 1985, when it was the scene of a fatal fire on 11 May 1985, when 56 supporters were killed and at least 265 were injured. It underwent a £2.6 million redevelopment and was re-opened in December 1986. The ground has undergone significant changes in the 1990s and early 2000s and now has a capacity of 25,136. The record attendance of 39,146 was set in 1911 for an FA Cup tie against Burnley, making it the oldest surviving attendance record at a Football League ground in the country.

West Yorkshire
West Yorkshire is a metropolitan county within the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England with a population of 2.2 million. West Yorkshire came into existence as a metropolitan county in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972.

Westfield Bradford
Westfield Bradford is a planned leisure and shopping complex in Bradford, England. In preparation for the project a number of buildings, mainly dating from the 1960s, were demolished on Forster Square and major shopping street Broadway.
By 2006 demolition work had freed for development a site encompassed by Hall Ings, Well Street, the new Lower Kirkgate and Charles Street. In April 2010, after several years in which no construction had taken place, the project was mothballed and work began on creating a temporary park on part of the site.
In 1998 the Forster Square Development Partnership was established between Magellan Properties, Caddick Developments and Bradford Metropolitan District Council. They planned a 51,096 m² (550,000 sq ft) shopping centre containing Debenhams, BHS, C&A [1], Marks and Spencer and 100 shops and other leisure facilities. (BHS already had a store in Broadway which was demolished as part of the demolition of the previous development on the site and C&A also had a store on the old Broadway although closed all of their UK stores in 2001 and thus cancelled plans to be part of this redevelopment). The partnership sold it to Stannifer which was bought out by the Westfield Group in December 2004.

Wibsey
Wibsey (population 14,530 - 2001 UK census) is a ward in the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England. Wibsey is named after Wibsey village which makes up the main part of the ward. As well as the area of Wibsey, the ward includes the area of Bankfoot to the east and much of the area of Odsal.
Wibsey means "Wibba's island", from the Old English personal name Wibba (possessive -s) + ēg (island, marsh). The name was recorded as Wibense in 1022. Local road-names, such as Harbour Road, support this meaning.
Wibsey was an important market village and hosts its own horse fair every year on 5 October. Fair Road has a funfair site, which has been established for many generations.
Following development around the village, Wibsey has been recognised for many years as an outer suburb of Bradford. It is located on a ridge which runs up to Queensbury, which has been credited as the highest market town in England.
Wibsey is also notable for the number of pubs in a small village. The Wibsey Working men's club featured on the BBC's White series, in a film examining the decline of the Working Man's Club, and British working class society in general.

Wrose
Wrose is a village and civil parish in the City of Bradford metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England, about three miles north of Bradford city centre, and south-east of Shipley. It sits on top of a hillside at a height of around 600-foot (180 m) above sea level, overlooking the Aire valley and Bradford valley. Since 2004, it has constituted a civil parish and is surrounded entirely by the unparished area of Bradford.
Around the hillside (Carr Hill) can be found the remains of many stone quarries, whose growth exploded in the 19th century as the city of Bradford grew with the wool trade. Many of Bradford's fine Yorkshire millstone buildings are built from these resources. A quarry at nearby Bolton Woods still operates today.
Wrose was home to the Yorkshire sporting family the Jowets, of which the last and most notable member was Dawson Jowet, founder of the Airedale beagles hunting pack in 1891, and its Master until his death in 1933. His monument remains on Ilkley moor.

Yorkshire Dales
The Yorkshire Dales is the name given to an upland area in Northern England.
The area lies within the county boundaries of historic Yorkshire, though it spans the ceremonial counties of North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Cumbria. Most of the area falls within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, created in 1954, and now one of the fifteen National parks of Britain, but the term also includes areas to the east of the National Park, notably Nidderdale.
The Dales is a collection of river valleys and the hills among them, rising from the Vale of York westwards to the hilltops of the main Pennine watershed. In some places the area extends westwards across the watershed, but most of the valleys drain eastwards to the Vale of York, into the Ouse and then the Humber.
The word dale comes from the Nordic/Germanic word for valley (dal, tal), and occurs in valley names across Yorkshire and Northern England. but the name Yorkshire Dales is generally used to refer specifically to the dales west of the Vale of York and north of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. The Yorkshire Dales is served by its own radio station, Fresh Radio, which broadcasts programmes from studio bases in Skipton and Richmond.

Alvar Aalto
Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (February 3, 1898, Kuortane – May 11, 1976, Helsinki) was a Finnish architect and designer. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware. Aalto's early career runs in parallel with the rapid economic growth and industrialization of Finland during the first half of the twentieth century and many of his clients were industrialists; among these were the Ahlström-Gullichsen family. The span of his career, from the 1920s to the 1970s, is reflected in the styles of his work, ranging from Nordic Classicism of the early work, to a rational International Style Modernism during the 1930s to a more organic modernist style from the 1940s onwards. What is typical for his entire career, however, is a concern for design as a Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art; whereby he - together with his first wife Aino Aalto - would design not just the building, but give special treatments to the interior surfaces and design furniture, lamps, and furnishings and glassware. The Alvar Aalto Museum, designed by Aalto himself, is located in what is regarded as his home city Jyväskylä.

David Dale
David Dale (6 January 1739 – 17 March 1806) was a Scottish merchant and businessman, known for establishing the influential weaving community of New Lanark, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland and is credited along with his son in law Robert Owen of being a founder of utopian socialism and a founding father of socialism
David Dale was born in Stewarton, Ayrshire. He was the son of a grocer and was apprenticed to a Paisley weaver, subsequenty working in Hamilton and Cambuslang. He then began preparing for an entrepreneurial career, travelling round the country buying up homespun linen. He later became a clerk to a Glasgow mercer, subsequently setting up his own business in 1768 importing linen yarn from the Dutch Republic.
He made an adventageous marriage to Anne Campbell, the daughter of John Campbell of Jura (John of the Bank), grandson of John Campbell, 1st Earl of Breadalbane and Holland of the massacre of Glencoe fame, and his wife, Mary who was the daughter of Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll. Jura was a Director of the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh and through him Dale became the Glasgow agent of that Bank in 1734, opening the Bank's first Glasgow branch in the High Street. He had become a key part of the Burgher Gentry of Glasgow merchants.

David Hockney
David Hockney, OM, CH, RA, (born 9 July 1937) is an English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer, who is based in Bridlington, Yorkshire and Kensington, London.
An important contributor to the Pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century.
Hockney was born in Bradford, England on 9 July 1937 to Laura and Kenneth Hockney and was educated first at Wellington Primary School, then Bradford Grammar School, Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, where he met R. B. Kitaj. While he was there Hockney said he felt at home, he took pride and success in his work here. While a student at the Royal College of Art, Hockney was featured in the exhibition Young Contemporaries – alongside Peter Blake – that announced the arrival of British Pop art. He was associated with the movement, but his early works also display expressionist elements, not dissimilar to certain works by Francis Bacon. Sometimes, as in We Two Boys Together Clinging (1961), named after a poem by Walt Whitman, these works make reference to his love for men. From 1963, Hockney was represented by the art dealer John Kasmin. In 1963 Hockney visited New York, making contact with Andy Warhol. A subsequent visit to California, where he lived for many years, inspired Hockney to make a series of paintings of swimming pools in Los Angeles, using the comparatively new acrylic medium and rendered in a highly realistic style using vibrant colours. In 1967, his painting, Peter Getting Out Of Nick's Pool, won the John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He made prints, portraits of friends, and stage designs for the Royal Court Theatre, Glyndebourne, La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Edward Akroyd
Edward Akroyd (1810–1887), English manufacturer, was born into a textile manufacturing family in 1810, and when he died in 1887, he still owned the family firm. He inherited "James Akroyd & Sons Ltd." from his father in 1847, and he became the owner of one of the country's largest worsted manufacturers.
He established mills at Haley Hill in Halifax and then at Copley, two miles or so to the south. He proved to be a very successful businessman, and his firm made him very prosperous. At Haley Hill, not far from his mills, he extended a large mansion, Bankfield, and then went to live there.
Akroyd was well read and concerned about the fortunes of Halifax and the terrible social conditions that grew out of the industrial revolution. He funded and supported a local allotment society and many institutions for the working classes, a school for child labourers, a workers' pension scheme, several churches (he was a staunch Anglican) and a cemetery. Jonathan Silver
Jonathan Silver (1949–1997) was an entrepreneur from Bradford who was responsible for restoring Salts Mill as a thriving cultural, retail and commercial centre.
Silver was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England in 1949, of German Jewish descent. He was a pupil at Bradford Grammar School where he at first did not shine academically but enjoyed working on the school's magazine. His interest in David Hockney's talent as an artist began to blossom and after they met at Silver's father's burger bar, Hockney agreed to design a cover for the school magazine. Silver then went on to study Art History and Textiles at Leeds University.
As a young man Silver exhibited entrepreneurial skills and spent his school lunch breaks at the local auction rooms buying and selling furniture. He married in 1972 and by 1979 had 13 menswear shops across the country. Throughout the 70s and 80s Silver started many other businesses.
There then followed a change of direction: Silver sold everything and travelled the world with his wife, Maggie, and two young daughters. Once they returned to England, Silver, looking for a new challenge, bought Salts Mill in 1987. The mill was in a dilapidated state but Silver could see the building's potential, and transformed it into retail and commercial units and an art gallery.

Philip Andrew Davies (born 5 January 1972) is a British Conservative Party politician. He is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Shipley in West Yorkshire.
Born in Doncaster, he was educated at the Old Swinford Hospital School, Stourbridge, and the University of Huddersfield where he was awarded a 2:1 BA Hons degree in History and Political Studies in 1993. He joined the Conservative Party in 1988. He became the manager of Marilyn Davies Bookmakers in 1990, and a cashier with Mark Jarvis Bookmakers in 1992 for a year until becoming a manager.
In 1993 he was employed by Asda initially as a cashier, before commencing training as a customer services manager in 1995, becoming a deputy customer service manager in 1997; later in the same year he was appointed as a Customer Relations Project Manager. In 1999 he became the customer services project manager in Leeds, he left Asda on his election to Parliament.
He unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary seat of Colne Valley at the 2001 general election and was defeated by the sitting Labour MP Kali Mountford by 4,639 votes.

Philippe Starck
Philippe Patrick Starck (born January 18, 1949, Paris) is a French product designer and probably the best known designer in the New Design style. His designs range from interior designs to mass produced consumer goods such as toothbrushes, chairs, and even houses.
He was educated in Paris at the École Camondo and in 1968, he founded his first design firm, which specialized in inflatable objects. In 1969, he became art director of his firm along with Pierre Cardin.
Starck's career started to climb in earnest in 1982 when he designed the interior for the private apartments of the French President François Mitterrand.
In 1986 he joined Domus Academy Department of Design as an associate lecturer.
Starck has worked both independently as an interior designer and as a product designer since 1975. In 2002, he created a number of what are considered relatively inexpensive product designs for the large American retailer Target Stores.
His most recent notable designs include an optical mouse for Microsoft, several yachts including the $300 million A, and even new packaging for a beer company. He was commissioned to design the Virgin Galactic "spaceport" in New Mexico (Foster and Partners are its architects).

Richard Corbett
Richard Corbett (born 6 January 1955, Southport, Lancashire) was a Member of the European Parliament for the Labour Party for Yorkshire and the Humber, serving between 1996 and 2009. Under the single member constituency system that predates the present proportional representation system, he represented Merseyside West from 1996 to 1999.
He lost his seat in the 2009 European Parliament elections. He is now advisor to President Herman Van Rompuy.
Corbett was educated at Farnborough Road School in Southport, the International School of Geneva and Trinity College, Oxford and later did an external doctorate at the University of Hull. At school, he was captain of the football team and played for the junior team of a Swiss second division club. At university, he was the secretary of the Labour Club and chairman of the student Oxford Committee for Europe. He co-ordinated the Oxford student "Yes" campaign in the 1975 referendum on membership of the European Community. He also skied for Oxford against Cambridge.

Titus Salt
Sir Titus Salt, 1st Baronet (20 September 1803 – 29 December 1876), born in Morley, near Leeds, was a manufacturer, politician and philanthropist in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. His father Daniel Salt was a businessman and sent Titus to a school in Batley, identified in some sources as Batley Grammar School. and then to another near Wakefield, named in some sources as Heath School. The Salt family lived at Manor Farm (now The Manor, a pub) in Crofton, near Wakefield between 1813 and 1819.
After working for two years as a wool-stapler in Wakefield he became his father's partner in the business of Daniel Salt and Son. The company used Russian Donskoi wool, which was widely used in the woollens trade, but not in worsted cloth. Titus visited the spinners in Bradford trying to interest them in using the wool for worsted manufacture, with no success, so he set up as a spinner and manufacturer.
In 1836, Titus came upon some bales of Alpaca wool in a warehouse in Liverpool and, after taking some samples away to experiment, came back and bought the consignment. Though he was not the first in England to work with the fibre, he was the creator of the lustrous and subsequently fashionable cloth called 'alpaca'. (The discovery was described by Charles Dickens in slightly fictionalised form in Household Words).

Apparently the third set of Quick Call II tones isn't rescue, but rather for horn activation as the relay tripped before the DTMF was complete (listen closely). Fair Harbor FD's Model 7t and 5 can be heard, along with a radio test dispatch at the end of the recording. Excuse the initial shaking, my tripod has been broken and I expected the horn after the DTMF (they modified their tone procedures after switching from a Motorola base station to a CAD system)

Saltaire is a Victorian model village within the City of Bradford Metropolitan District, West Yorkshire, England, by the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. UNESCO has designated the village as a World Heritage Site, and it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Saltaire was founded in 1851 by Sir Titus Salt, a leading industrialist in the Yorkshire woollen industry. The name of the village is a combination of the founder's surname and the name of the river. Salt moved his business (five separate mills) from Bradford to this site near Shipley to arrange his workers and to site his large textile mill by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the railway. Salt employed the Bradford firm of Lockwood and Mawson as his architects.[1]
A similar project had been started a few years earlier by Edward Akroyd at Copley, also in West Yorkshire. The cotton mill village of New Lanark, which is also a World Heritage site, was founded by David Dale in 1786.
Salt built neat stone houses for his workers (much better than the slums of Bradford), wash-houses with tap water, bath-houses, a hospital and an institute for recreation and education, with a library, a reading room, a concert hall, billiard room, science laboratory and a gymnasium. The village had a school for the children of the workers, almshouses, allotments, a park and a boathouse.[2] Because of this combination of houses, employment and social services the original town is often seen as an important development in the history of 19th century urban planning.[3][4]
Sir Titus died in 1876 and was interred in the mausoleum adjacent to the Congregational church. When Sir Titus Salt's son, likewise Sir Titus Salt, died, Saltaire was taken over by a partnership which included Sir James Roberts from Haworth who had worked at the mill since the age of twelve, and who travelled to Russia each year, speaking Russian fluently. James Roberts came to own Saltaire, but chose to invest his money heavily in Russia, losing some of his fortune in the Russian Revolution. He endowed a chair of Russian at Leeds University and bought the Brontë's Haworth Parsonage for the nation. He is mentioned in T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Roberts is buried at Fairlight, East Sussex.[5]
Saltaire today[link]
In December 2001, Saltaire was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.[6] This means that the government has a duty to protect the site. The buildings belonging to the model village are individually listed, with the highest level of protection given to the Congregational church (since 1972 known as the United Reformed Church) which is listed grade I. The village has survived remarkably complete, but further protection is needed as the village is blighted by traffic through the Aire Valley, an important east-west route. A bypass is proposed to relieve traffic pressure. Roberts Park, on the north side of the river, has suffered from neglect and vandalism but has been restored by Bradford Council [7]
Saltaire is a conservation area. Victoria Hall (originally the Saltaire Institute) is used for meetings and concerts, and houses a Victorian Reed Organ Museum. The village is served by Saltaire railway station.
The Saltaire Festival, which first took place in 2003 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of Saltaire, is held every year over eleven days in September.
Politically, Saltaire is part of the Shipley electoral ward of the City of Bradford, and part of the parliamentary constituency of Shipley, currently represented by Philip Davies of the Conservatives. From 1999 to 2005, parliamentarians from three chambers, Chris Leslie MP in the House of Commons, Lord Wallace of Saltaire in the House of Lords and Richard Corbett MEP in the European Parliament, all lived in Saltaire.
Proposed bypass[link]
Saltaire is surrounded by a buffer zone established to protect the context of the World Heritage Site. Concerns have been raised over plans announced by Bradford Council and Action Airedale to site a bypass through the buffer zone either side of the World Heritage Site and to tunnel beneath the village.[8] Within sight of the mill, the tunnel would follow the line of the railway and exit behind the United Reformed Church.[9] As it would pass alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, it could impact on this Conservation Area. The route would impact on an ancient semi-natural woodland and the Woodland Garden of Remembrance at Nab Wood Cemetery.[10]
Salt's Mill today[link]
Salt's Mill closed in February 1986, and Jonathan Silver bought it the following year and began renovating it.[1] Today it houses a mixture of business, commerce, leisure and residential use. In the main mill building are:
- The 1853 gallery: several large rooms given over to the works of the Bradford-born artist David Hockney: including paintings, drawings, photomontages and stage sets.
- Industrial companies including the electronics manufacturer Pace plc.
- Various shops. In 2006 there are shops selling books, art supplies, jewellery, outdoor wear, antiques, suits, bicycles and housewares; the last includes pieces by internationally known designers such as Alvar Aalto and Philippe Starck.
- Restaurants and cafes.
The "New Mill", on the other side of the canal, is divided between offices for the local National Health Service Trusts and residential flats.

The Dancing Man is the name given to the man who was filmed dancing on the street in Sydney, Australia, after the end of World War II. On 15 August 1945, a reporter took note of a man's joyful expression and dance and asked him to do it again. The man consented and was caught on motion picture film in an Australian edition of the newsreel Movietone News. The film and stills from it have taken on iconic status in Australian history and culture, and symbolise victory in the war.

There has been much debate as to the identity of the dancing man. The identity commonly accepted, though, is that he is Frank McAlary, a retired barrister who claims that he was the man photographed pirouetting in Elizabeth Street, Sydney, on 15 August 1945. A Queen's Counsel, Chester Porter, and a former Compensation Court judge, Barry Egan, both claim to have seen Mr. McAlary being filmed dancing.[1]
The television programme Where Are They Now, produced by Australia's Seven Network, attempted to solve the mystery of the dancing man's identity. The network hired a forensic scientist who examined the film reel and picture and came to the conclusion that it was indeed McAlary.
The Royal Australian Mint, however, chose to portray Ern Hill as the dancing man on a 2005 issue $1 coin commemorating 60 years since the World War II armistice. Mr. Hill has made a statement that, "The camera came along and I did a bit of a jump around."[1] The coin, sculpted by Wojciech Pietranik, does not bear any name.
Rebecca Keenan of Film World Pty. Ltd., says the dancer may be one Patrick Blackall.[citation needed] Mr. Blackall has claimed, "I'm the genuine dancing man," and has signed statutory declarations that he is the man in the film.

Chantel McGregor attended Leeds College of Music where she achieved a number of awards including the Leeds College of Music Prize for Outstanding Musicianship. She gained a First Class Honours degree in Popular Music in July 2009 and has gone on to develop a career in the UK and international blues music scene, performing both solo and with her band.
In 2011, she was voted "Young Artist of the Year" at the British Blues Awards.[1]
Her debut album "Like No Other" was produced by Livingstone Brown who has worked with such artists as Tina Turner, Bryan Ferry, Robin Trower, ABC and Bill Withers.

Howard Skempton (born 31 October 1947) is a British composer and accordionist. Since the late 1960s, when he helped organize the Scratch Orchestra, he has been associated with the English school of experimental music. Skempton's work is characterized by stripped down, essentials-only choice of materials, absence of formal development and a strong emphasis on melody; his music has been described as "the emancipation of the consonance" by musicologist Hermann-Christoph Müller.[1]

Howard Skempton was born in Chester and studied at Ealing Technical College.[2] He started composing before 1967; that year he moved to London and began taking private lessons in composition under Cornelius Cardew. In 1968 Skempton joined Cardew's experimental music class at Morley College, where in spring 1969 Cardew, Skempton and composer Michael Parsons organized the Scratch Orchestra. This ensemble had open membership and was dedicated to performing experimental contemporary music by composers such as La Monte Young, John Cage, Terry Riley, as well as by members of the orchestra itself. One of Skempton's early works, Drum No. 1 (1969), became one of the "most useful and satisfying" pieces in the repertory of the Scratch Orchestra.[3]
Through Scratch Orchestra Skempton met numerous composers and performers, including Christopher Hobbs, John White and various Systems artists, and pianist John Tilbury. However, tensions arose during the politicizing of the Scratch Orchestra in early 1970s: Cardew and a number of other important members were pushing the ensemble towards a Marxist direction. Skempton, along with Hobbs, Parsons, White and many others, refused to be associated with the political line; the breakup of the Orchestra was accompanied by, in Parson's words, "a split between its 'political' and 'experimental' factions."[4]
Skempton has been working as a music editor, performer (of his own compositions, on piano and accordion) and teacher since 1971.[2] In 1974 he and Michael Parsons formed a duo to perform their own works.[4] The 1980s saw an increase of interest in Skempton's music, which led to more commissions and permitted him to compose more for larger forces.[5] Lento, an orchestral work composed in late 1991, became one of Skempton's most recognized and widely known pieces. In the 1990s important recordings of his works started appearing, such as a disc of piano music recorded by old friend and Scratch Orchestra colleague John Tilbury, released on Sony Classical in 1996,[6] and Surface Tension, a recording of miscellaneous works released on Mode Records.[7]
Howard Skempton currently teaches composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire.[8] Recently, Skempton was the winner of the Chamber Scale Composition category at the 2005 Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards for his string quartet Tendrils (2004).[9]

Skempton's style is characterized by a concentration on the quality of sound and an economy of means,[10] absence of development in the conventional sense, and concentration on sonority.[2] Many pieces are also quite short, lasting no longer than one or two minutes.[11] Although the compositional methods are clearly experimental (involving, for example, aleatory), there is a marked emphasis on the melody in many pieces,[2] and already some of the earlier piano works (Saltaire Melody (1977), Trace (1980)) quickly became favorites of the public.[6]
Formative influences on Skempton's music included Erik Satie, John Cage and Morton Feldman.[2] For example, A Humming Song (1967), an early piano piece composed before Skempton started lessons with Cardew, is a miniature with static, gentle sound. The harmonic structure consists of eight symmetrically arranged pitches, out of which six are selected for use in the piece. Chance procedures are then used to determine the order and number of occurrences of individual pitches. The pianist is asked to sustain certain pitches by humming.[12] Another early piece, Drum No. 1 (1969), composed for the Scratch Orchestra, consists of just a few written instructions to the performers and is clearly inspired by similarly realized works by La Monte Young, whose music Cardew was enthusiastically propagating in the late 1960s.[13] The score of May Pole (1971), a piece for orchestra, consists of a chance determined sequence of chords. Each performer chooses a note from a chord, and chooses the moment when to play that note; the later, the softer the dynamics.[14] Skempton later called such pieces "landscapes" that "simply project the material as sound, without momentum."[15] Other early works include two pieces for tape, a medium Skempton rarely used later: Indian Summer (1969) and Drum No. 3 (1971).
The early 1970s saw a slow shift from static, abstract pieces to ones with a more clearly defined rhythmic and harmonic structure, although the methods and forms Skempton used remained unorthodox. For instance, in a series of Quavers piano pieces (1973–75) the music consists solely of repeated chords with no pauses between them. In addition to "landscapes", two other categories appeared, dubbed "melodies" and "chorales" by the composer. The "melodies" are single melodic lines either with simple accompaniment (Saltaire Melody, for piano (1977)) or suspended in space (later works such as Trace for piano (1980) and Bagatelle for flute (1985)). "Chorales" are works where material is presented primarily (or solely) using chords. An example is Postlude (1978), for piano, in contradistinction to Eirenicon 3 (1978), also for piano, which is a "landscape".[15] The earlier "melodies" were apparently composed at the instrument, intuitively, whereas the later ones evolve from a series of written pitches.[16]
It was also in the 1970s that Skempton started composing chamber works, although these were almost always for two performers, since they were written to be performed by the duo of Skempton himself and Michael Parsons. These pieces included a number of horn duos, pieces for two drums, and a duet for piano and woodblocks. Finally, in 1970s Skempton started playing accordion and composing for this instrument.
In 1980 Skempton composed Chorales, his first major work for orchestra. It was commissioned by the Merseyside Youth Orchestra. The composer described it as "essentially the same as what I was doing before, but on an orchestral scale".[17] Although the work is clearly a "chorale" in the sense Postlude and similar pieces are, during the 1980s Skempton's range expanded greatly, leading to works such as The Durham Strike (1985), which is a set of piano variations that is longer than any of the previous piano pieces, Images (1989), a large cycle of piano works for a TV documentary, and chamber works scored for larger forces than those used previously.
Skempton's first major success came in 1991 after the premiere of Lento (1990), an orchestral piece that gained a larger audience for the composer.[2] During the 1990s and the 2000s Skempton started composing longer works for larger forces. These include several concertos, among which are those for instruments rarely used in the Western tradition: the hurdy-gurdy (Concerto for hurdy-gurdy and percussion (1994)) and the accordion (Concerto for oboe, accordion and strings (1997)). Some of the later works explore non-standard instrumentation: Alveston (2007) is scored for four trumpets, Horizons (2001) is scored for oboe and harp, Ballade (1997) is a pieces for saxophone quartet and string orchestra.[18]
