Who Needs College Anyway? Remarks by Charles Murray
President Obama set an ambitious new goal in his speech to Congress on February 24, 2009, proclaiming that by 2020, America will ...have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. But some experts, like author Charles Murray, dont think we need more Americans going to college. In his new book, Real Education: Four Simple Truths for Bringing Americas Schools Back to Reality (Random House, 2008), Murray argues that Americans place too much value on the bachelors degree. Murray and researcher Anthony Carnevale debated Who Needs a College Education Anyway? at the Hechinger Institutes Seminar for Higher Education Reporters in December 2008. Scott Jaschik of Inside Higher Ed moderated the debate. Murray, the WH Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, contends that because ability varies and 50 percent of people are below average, our current system of higher education makes little sense. Carnevale, Research Professor and Director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, argues we should encourage as many students as possible to attend and graduate from college, because intelligence isnt fixed at birth and can be influenced by education. After their remarks, Murray and Carnevale took questions from journalists participating in the Seminar.

THE COLLEGE CONSPIRACY
College Conspiracy is the most comprehensive documentary ever produced about higher education in the US The film exposes the facts and truth about America's college education system. 'College Conspiracy' was produced over a six-month period by NIA's team of expert Austrian economists with the help of thousands of NIA members who contributed their ideas and personal stories for the film. NIA believes the US college education system is a scam that turns vulnerable young Americans into debt slaves for life. NIA tracks price inflation in all US industries and there is no industry that has seen more consistent price inflation this decade than college education. After the burst of the Real Estate bubble, student loans are now the easiest loan to receive in the US, and total student loan debts now exceed credit card debts. The government gives out easy student loans to anybody, regardless of grades, credit history, what they are majoring in, and what their job prospects are. NIA believes it is illegal for the US government to be in the student loan business because the US constitution doesn't authorize it. Just like how the US government created Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to make housing affordable, but instead drove housing prices through the roof; the US government, by trying to make college more affordable, is accomplishing the exact opposite and driving tuition prices to astronomical levels that provide a negative return on investment. The US has been experiencing 5.15 ...

World's Best Airports 2012 - Top 20 from Skytrax
This final Global Airport Rankings in the World Airport Awards 2012 by Skytrax. "Little red dot" (or "Little Red Dot") is an epithet for the nation of Singapore. It describes the manner in which the main and subsidiary islands comprising the Republic, with a total land area of no more than 704 km2 (270 sq mi), are marked on many world maps. Originally, it was apparently used to refer to Singapore in a disparaging manner by former Indonesian President BJ Habibie (though this was denied by him), but has come to be used by both Singaporean politicians and ordinary citizens with pride and a sense of the nation's success despite its physical limitations. There is no doubt that the "Little red dot" is not so small afterall: Singapore has become one of the top-scoring countries on the PISA tests. Two of Singapore's universities are now among the top 100 universities in the world, according to the latest edition of Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In particular, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has jumped over 80 spots in a university ranking to reach 86th place in the London-based rankings. The National University of Singapore (NUS) climbed 11 positions and is now ranked 29th. In 2012, three Asian cities made the top ten of the EIU/Citi global competitiveness study. Singapore ranked a highly impressive 3rd, Hong Kong matched Paris to finish 4th, and Tokyo placed ahead of Zurich to rate 6th. In the same month, Seoul reached a new high of 8th in the Global ...

Bicycle Rush Hour Utrecht (Netherlands) III
Morning rush hour in the 4th largest city in the Netherlands. Streets look like this when 33% of ALL trips are made by bicycle! This is an ordinary Wednesday morning in April 2010 at around 8.30 am. Original time was 8 minutes that were compressed into 2 minutes, so everything is 4 times faster than in reality. The sound is original. This is one of the busiest junctions in Utrecht a city with a population of 300000. No less than 22000 bicycles and 2500 buses pass here every day. And yet Google Street View missed it. Because private motorized traffic is restricted here. These cyclists cross a one way bus lane (also used by taxis and municipal vehicles), two light rail tracks and then a one way street that can be used by private vehicles. Behind the camera is a railway (you can hear the squeaking sounds of the trains passing) and the main railway station is very close too. A number of rental bikes from the station pass and many of the cyclists will have come by train for the first part of their commute. For those who frown upon the total absence of bike helmets in this video, consider these findings from a US study: "Cycling in the Netherlands is much safer than in the USA. The Netherlands has the lowest non-fatal injury rate as well as the lowest fatality rate, while the USA has the highest non-fatal injury rate as well as the highest fatality rate. Indeed, the non-fatal injury rate for the USA is about 30 times higher than for the Netherlands. Injury rate per million km ...

CERN News - LHC to run at 4 TeV per beam in 2012
The LHC will run with a beam energy of 4 TeV this year, 0.5 TeV higher than in 2010 and 2011. This decision was taken by CERN management following the annual performance workshop held in Chamonix last week and a report delivered today by the external CERN Machine Advisory Committee (CMAC). It is accompanied by a strategy to optimise LHC running to deliver the maximum possible amount of data in 2012 before the LHC goes into a long shutdown to prepare for higher energy running. The data target for 2012 is 15 inverse femtobarns for ATLAS and CMS, three times higher than in 2011. Bunch spacing in the LHC will remain at 50 nanoseconds.

LETTERS!
In which Dan writes letters to author Dan Brown and President Barack Obama asking if maybe, potentially it would be possible to meet them. Tasks in this episode: Meet Dan Brown: revision3.com Meet Barack Obama: revision3.com ///Rough draft of letter/// Mr. President, My name is Dan Brown. I'm twenty years old and just moved from Lincoln Nebraska to San Francisco California for an internet show/project/social experiment I'm doing called "Dan 3.0." I've been a video blogger for the better part of four years-- I got started in 2007 with a tutorial on how to solve the Rubik's Cube, began "vlogging" regularly in 2008 and over time have grown an audience of over 250000 subscribers on YouTube. I've posted almost five hundred videos spanning all sorts of topics and styles. Some have been just plain silliness, but others have included "vlogs" about the 2008 election cycle, documenting a month-long trip to China I took with the University of Nebraska, and starting a discussion about the current state and potential future of higher education. The project I'm working on right now, Dan 3.0, is a bit of a change of pace-- essentially I'm letting my audience control my life for the year. Anyone can submit an idea into what we call the "decision engine" as to something they think I should do, submitted ideas are then voted upon by the masses and I do my best to carry out the highest rated ideas. Sometimes I wind up doing little things like making a rubber band ball or rolling down a hill ...

Imagining India By Nandan Nilekani with Rajdeep Sairdesai CNN IBN
Since the early 1990s, India has witnessed great social, political and cultural change. As the worlds largest democracy, its most diverse nation and one of its fastest growing economies, India is now, sixty years after Independence, universally regarded as an emerging superpower. In this sweeping and comprehensive book, one the countrys finest and most dynamic minds examines the central ideas that have shaped modern India, and offers an original perspective on our past, present and future. Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, who has been a key player in Indias growth story and was chosen by Time magazine as one of the hundred most influential people in the world, points out that the countrys future rests on more than simply economic growth; it also depends on reform and innovation in all sectors of public life. Looking closely at our recent history, he examines the ideas and attitudes that have evolved with the times and contributed to our progress, as also those that keep us shackled to old, unproductive and fundamentally undemocratic ways. He discusses how, despite good intentions and astonishing idealism, our early socialist policies stifled growth and weakened our democracy; how, contrary to received wisdom, Indias large and overwhelmingly young population has now become our greatest strength; how information technology is revolutionizing not just business but also governance in the everyday life of a vast majority of Indians; and how rapid urbanization is ...

Interviews with Jürgen Schukraft (ALICE spokesperson), Bolek Wyslouch (CMS run coordinator), Peter Steinberg (ATLAS Brookhaven National Laboratory), William Brooks (ATLAS Brookhaven National Laboratory). --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- First heavy-ion collisions in CMS The CMS experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has recorded its first Lead-Lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair, marking the start of its heavy ion research programme. Physicists around the world expect a wealth of new results and phenomena from these collisions, which occur at energies 14 times higher than previously achieved by the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC, Brookhaven, USA). At 11:20:56, on 8th November the LHC Control Centre declared stable colliding beams of heavy ions. CMS immediately detected the first collisions, each producing thousands of particles whose trajectories are reconstructed in the CMS silicon detectors and whose energies are measured in the calorimeters. Moments later, the data were analysed and the first images of these events were produced. • cms.web.cern.ch --- CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Spending More On Prisons Than Colleges - Report
"There's a direct relationship between how much money the Golden State spends on prisons and how much it spends on higher education, according to a report put out by the non-partisan public policy group California Common Sense. When one goes up, the other goes down. And, at least in California, the former has been going up a lot more than the latter. The study, entitled Winners and Losers: Corrections and Higher Education in California, looked at the state's general fund expenditures on corrections and higher education from the period between 1981 and 2011. Since 1980, higher education spending has decreased by 13 percent in inflation adjusted dollars, whereas spending on California's prisons and associated correctional programs has skyrocketed by 436 percent...".* Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola (host of TYT University and Common Room) break it down on The Young Turks. *Read more here from Aaron Sankin in The Huffington Post: www.huffingtonpost.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: bit.ly Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com

What is Special About Language?
Noam Chomsky, a world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist lectured at the University of Arizona on Feb. 7, 2012, on "What is Special About Language?" Noam Chomsky is an Institute Professor and a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked for more than 50 years. Chomsky, who according to The New York Times is "arguably the most important intellectual alive," is credited with revolutionizing the field of linguistics by introducing generative grammar and the concept of a universal grammar, which underlies all human language and is based in the innate structure of language. Beyond linguistics, his work has influenced fields such as cognitive science, philosophy, computer science, mathematics, and psychology. Noam Chomsky has received numerous awards, including the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences, the Helmholtz Medal, the Dorothy Eldridge Peacemaker Award, and the Ben Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science. Since the 1960s, Chomsky has been an influential social analyst and critic. He has published numerous books on US foreign and domestic policies, international politics, the media and related subjects. His writings are among the most quoted in today's world.

You won't detect radiation from Japan in the US with old Civil Defense Radiation Detectors
PLEASE READ! Here's a semi-coherent attempt I made to describe the old Civil Defense Geiger counters that are now selling on ebay for ridiculous prices. You won't be able to detect the very slight radiation that might make it here from Japan with these old detectors. I try to explain that in the video. Hope it makes sense. The old civil defense high-range detectors CD V-710, CD V-715, CD V-717, CD V-720s are very high range gamma radiation detectors. They ARE NOT Geiger Counters as they are being called on ebay. These high-range detectors were designed to detect levels of radiation hundreds of times higher than a geiger counter. Please don't waste your money on one thinking you'll be able to detect radiation from Japan in the United States with these. Also any radiation that might make it to the US will be so diluted that the CD V-700 Geiger Counters most likely will not detect it either. If you do get a geiger counter keep in mind that there is background radiation everywhere. Just because you get a slight reading doesn't mean it's radiation from the nuclear plant in Japan.

Rambo Amadeus RTS interviu 3-4 1994
Rambo Amadeus (Serbian Cyrillic: Рамбо Амадеус, born June 14, 1963 in Kotor, Montenegro, SFR Yugoslavia) is the stage name of the Belgrade-based Montenegrin singer-songwriter Antonije Pušić, popular all over the former Yugoslavia. A self-titled "musician, poet, and media manipulator" continues to be one of the most interesting phenomena on music scene(s) of the former Yugoslavia. His songs combine satirical lyrics on the nature of common people and silliness of local politics. He uses a mixture of musical styles (converging towards drum and bass in later works, but involving a lot of turbo-folk elements in earlier songs), and self-conscious ironic wit (for example, one of his aliases is "Rambo Amadeus Svjetski Mega Car" (RASMC) — "Rambo Amadeus World Mega Emperor"). His stage name itself is made from John Rambo and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Known also as a "charming king of jovial pop", his concerts are never mere repetitions of recorded songs, but a mixture of musical improvisation and humor exploiting all aspects of human nature in a crude manner. Some fans compare his style and career path with those of Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart. He is a graduate of the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and he also completed six grades of elementary music school for piano before dropping out. Before taking up music as a career choice, Rambo was an accomplished competitive sailor. Between 1972 and 1984, he represented Yugoslavia in numerous ...
