RIMPAC 2012 joint military drill kicks off in Hawaii
Play Video The 2012 Pacific joint naval exercise, also known as RIMPAC 2012, has begun off the coast Hawaii. A total of 22 countries are involved in the drill, a big increase on the 14 that took part in 2010. It's a new record in terms of numbers of participating countries and overall military strength. 22 nations are converging on Hawaii for the 23rd RIMPAC military drill. The 11-day naval exercises will involve forty-two ships, six submarines and nearly 200 aircraft. More than 25000 personnel will be participating, making it the largest military exercise since 1971. Apart from the regular players, newcomers Russia, Philippines and six other countries are participating for the first time. One expert, Brad Glosserman, Executive Director of the Pacific Forum Center, said "Russia's presence speaks to its desire to be more deeply engaged in this region." The Philippines involvement comes at a delicate moment in terms of their relations with China. The territorial dispute between the two nations has recently taken on an international dimension as the Philippines Foreign Secretary heads to Japan for talks. The situation in the South China Sea and maritime security will both be high on the agenda. Despite being the important player in the Asia-Pacific region, China is sitting on the sidelines... Charlie Brown, spokesman for the US Navy's 3rd Fleet explained why China has been excluded from the drill. He said: "Certain prohibitions are in place regarding China's access to US ...

USS Worden Sinkex Rimpac 2000 (former DLG/CG-18)
Decommiissioned Leahy Class Destroyer Leader / Guided Missile Cruiser USS Worden (DLG/CG 18) is disposed of as a target during Rim of the Pacific wargame exercises north of Hawaii in 2000. Worden was built in 1961/62, first comissioned in 1963, served 30 plus years as a ship of the line taking on numerous deployments in some of the more hostile parts of the world, and was eventually decommissioned in 1993. During the SinkEx exercise the unmanned and unarmed former Worden served as a target and was hit multiple times by various munitions from the HMAS Adelade (FFG-01), sustained a Torpedo hit from the USS Tuscon (SSN-770), and was hit with Maverick anti ship missiles fired from aircraft operating off of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). Worden took approximately 90 minutes to sink after the last shot was fired, despite the damage and despite the ship not having watertight integrity, and after sitting derelict for the better part of seven years rusting away. What remains of Worden now rests roughly 2560 Fathoms (15360 feet, 4681 meters, 2.9 miles) below the Pacific Ocean. Id Fiat Worden Si!
