Joe Swanberg (Interview, 2012) - The Seventh Art: Issue 5, Section 3
An in-depth interview with director Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets, Hannah Takes the Stairs, Autoerotic). www.theseventhart.org Joe Swanberg is a Chicago-based filmmaker who is commonly associated with the so-called mumblecore mode of filmmaking - a term assigned to low-budget American films made in the 2000s that were singled out for their naturalism. For Swanberg, this is often achieved through improvisational performances, digital photography and frank depictions of sex. Following his 2005 debut, Kissing on the Mouth, Swanberg embarked on a string of at least one film a year until 2010, three of which featured Greta Gerwig (culminating in their co-directed Nights and Weekends). The Gerwig collaborations and the following film Alexander the Last, seemed to signal a move towards a more traditional form of filmmaking. However, 2011's Uncle Kent saw a return to the almost formalistic naturalism of his early work, including segments shot on a Flip camera, while Autoerotic is an omnibus film made with Adam Wingard. Joe was in Toronto to present 2011's Full Moon Trilogy - comprised of Art History, Silver Bullets and The Zone - and instruct a masterclass titled, 'DIY Art and Life'. The trilogy is included in the four films currently being released as part of Swanberg's innovative subscription home video series, Joe Swanberg Collected Films 2011, released by Factory 25. The night after the screening, we met up with Joe at COLD TEA, where we had a beer and discussed the periods of ...

with Joe Swanberg
Joe Swanberg is an American independent filmmaker, often associated and credited with helping pioneer the "mumblecore" film movement. He's made a career of producing/ directing/ writing micro-budgeted films, often acting in his own features as well as enlisting his friends to help out. Much of the dialogue in his films is improvised, although he recently has begun to redefine himself by challenging the very parameters of what would typically define the "mumblecore" style. Many of Joe Swanberg's films have done the indie film festival circuit, and even been prominently featured by IFC and the Sundance Channel. To learn more about Joe Swanberg visit www.joeswanberg.com/

"Uncle Kent": Official Trailer
Trailer courtesy of IFC Films Uncle Kent is a sexed-up, achingly true-to-life modern comedy about aging, loneliness, desire, and the awkward intimacies of online friendship. Kent (Kent Osborne, Hannah Takes the Stairs) is an unmarried children's-show writer living alone with his cat in Los Angeles. He spends his days sketching gag cartoons and bouncing ideas off his hyperactive friend, Kev (Kevin Bewersdorf), a composer for the show. At night, Kent is a habitué of Internet chat rooms, staving off loneliness by drinking a beer, smoking a bowl, and dialoguing with remote strangers. One of his online acquaintances is pretty environmental journalist Kate (exciting newcomer Jennifer Prediger), who crashes at Kent's house for the weekend while she's in town for a conference. Though they've only previously met online, Kent and Kate are instantly at ease with each other in person—shopping, talking, goofing off—and as their dynamic begins to mimic a romantic couple's, a palpable sexual tension grows alongside their chummy rapport. The only problem is, Kate has a boyfriend. Initially, Kent respects that boundary, even though he isn't above surreptitiously swiping some naked photos from her digital camera. Then, as an expression of solidarity in their unacknowledged sexual frustration, the flirtatious twosome arrange a three-way with online swinger Josephine (Josephine Decker), further confusing Kent—a middle-aged guy just beginning to sense the emptiness of his collegiate lifestyle ...

Hannah Takes the Stairs - Official Trailer
Over the course of one hot post-graduate summer, Hannah (Greta Gerwig) falls precariously in and out of love. A chronically dissatisfied breaker of hearts, she finds herself drifting away from her newly unemployed boyfriend (Mark Duplass) and drawn to two of her co-workers, Matt (Kent Osborne) and Paul (Andrew Bujalski). "What Ms. Gerwig does...confirms a suspicion that began to bubble up through the diffidence and indirection of movies like "Hannah Takes the Stairs," "LOL" and "Nights and Weekends," all of which she made in collaboration with Joe Swanberg. Ms. Gerwig, most likely without intending to be anything of the kind, may well be the definitive screen actress of her generation, a judgment I offer with all sincerity and a measure of ambivalence. She seems to be embarked on a project, however piecemeal and modestly scaled, of redefining just what it is we talk about when we talk about acting." - AO Scott, NY Times

Hannah Takes The Stairs
Over the course of one hot post-graduate summer, Hannah (Greta Gerwig) falls precariously in and out of love. A breaker of hearts and chronically dissatisfied, she finds herself drifting away from her newly unemployed boyfriend (Mark Duplass, THE PUFFY CHAIR) and drawn to two of her co-workers, Matt (Kent Osborne) and Paul (Andrew Bujalski, MUTUAL APPRECIATION). Conceived without a traditional script, this triumph of improvisional acting was born from intimate collaboration between director Joe Swanberg (LOL, KISSING ON THE MOUTH) and his cast, which is made up of some of today's most important up-and-coming independent filmmakers. Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious, and featuring stunning naturalistic performances, HANNAH TAKES THE STAIRS is a delicate look at friendship, ambition, and the pursuit of happiness that heralds the return of a truly independent form of American moviemaking.
