In 1976, James Clavell wrote an epic masterpiece: the story of Blackthorne, an English sailor lost in Feudal Japan. He gradually finds his place, oft the central pawn of political intrigues between various foreign powers and the local warlords. In 1980, this miniseries was unleashed on the world and created a whole new audience for the mammoth bestseller. No small feat considering the length and complexity of Clavell's 1200+ page door-stopper. Clocking in at almost 10 hours, this mega-budgeted series delivers the goods. People who have seen "The Last Samurai" might see a few plot similarities (even in certain smaller details: Tom Cruise sports exactly the same haircut as Richard Chamberlain). With all respect for the 2003 film, Shogun is far out of its reach.
Richard Chamberlain embodies Blackthorne to perfection, successfully gaining our empathy through an ambiguous yet very human performance. Supporting him are Japanese icon Toshiro Mifune as the shrewd warlord and aspiring shogun Torunaga, who befriends/manipulates Blackthorne, and Yoko Shimada as Blackthorne's translator, confident and friend. Every actor gives life to Clavell's carefully drawn and layered characters (most of all a very bombastic John Rhys-Davies). For a television miniseries, the technical specs are quite surprisingly good. Indeed the budget must have been quite important (and set a record at the time) but never is the story or it's rhythm scarified to show-off. The direction and photography are quite tasteful, often reminiscent of early Kurosawa, only in color. Maurice Jarre's score might not reach the lofty heights of his work for David Lean but it serves it's purpose.
Many will tell you that the book is better. It is certainly more intimate and detailed, but a more faithful and excellent adaptation of such a rich book you are not likely to see anytime soon. For anyone with a taste for epics, Japan or just plain good entertainment, this is essential viewing.

Am 20. April 1600 spült ein Taifun ein holländisches Schiff an die südjapanische Küste. Der englische Steuermann William Adams ist einer der Überlebenden und wird vom damaligen Herrscher Japans Ieyasu gefangen gehalten. Schnell avanciert er zu dessen engstem Vertrauten und wird sogar in die Kriegerkaste der Samurai aufgenommen. Das Erscheinen des englischen Protestanten ist der Anfang Jahrzehnte langer Christenverfolgungen in Japan.
Portugiesische Kaufleute und katholische Missionare sind bestürzt über das plötzliche Auftauchen protestantischer Holländer und Engländer in ihrem Einflussbereich. Sie haben Angst um ihre Profite und befürchten, dass sich die Schrecken der europäischen Glaubenskriege auf Japan ausweiten würden. Die Portugiesen fordern die sofortige Hinrichtung der gesamten Mannschaft, weil die Holländer und ihr englischer Steuermann gefährliche Piraten und Ketzer seien.
Mehrfach wird William Adams vor den Feldherrn Ieyasu geführt, den absoluten Herrscher Japans. Dieser fällt eine weitreichende Entscheidung: Adams und seine Mannschaft werden nicht hingerichtet, denn sie haben dem Land keinen Schaden zugefügt. Adams darf aber nicht nach England zurückkehren. Er bleibt gefangen im Reich des Shogun.
Adams lernt schnell Japanisch, baut für den Shogun Hochsee taugliche Schiffe, avanciert zum außenpolitischen Berater und wird später engster Vertrauter Ieyasus. Durch seine Fürsprache wird es zunächst den Holländern, später auch den Engländern gestattet, in Japan Handelsniederlassungen zu gründen.
Wegen der neuen Handelspartner sieht der Shogun keinen Grund mehr, die christlichen Missionare in Japan zu dulden. 1614 läßt er den christlichen Glauben verbieten. Mit seinem Kampf ums Überleben hat William Adams das Ende eines christlichen Jahrhunderts in Japan eingeläutet.

SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. proudly announce Shogun 2: Total War , the sixth instalment of The Creative Assembly's multi award-winning Total War™ strategy franchise on PC. Shogun 2: Total War returns to Feudal Japan 10 years after the release of the original Shogun: Total War , and sees Creative Assembly tap into their 10 years of Total War development experience to make Shogun 2 the same genre defining game the original title proved to be.
It is the middle of the 16th Century in Feudal Japan. The country, once ruled by a unified government, is now split into many warring clans. Players take on the role of one Daimyo, the clan leader, and will use military engagements, economics and diplomacy to achieve the ultimate goal, re-unite Japan under his supreme command and become the new Shogun -- the undisputed ruler of a pacified nation.
Shogun 2: Total War will feature enhanced full 3D battles via land and sea, which made a name for the series, as well as the tactical campaign map that many refer to as the heart and soul of Total War. Featuring a brand new AI system inspired by the scriptures that influenced Japanese warfare, the millennia old Chinese "Art of War", the Creative Assembly brings the wisdom of Master Sun Tsu to Shogun 2: Total War.
