UFC 38: Brawl at the Hall was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, on July 13, 2002. The event was seen on pay per view in the United States, and was later released on home video.

Lee Lamrani Ibrahim "Lightning" Murray (Arabic: لي العمراني إبراهيم موراي) is an English-Moroccan mixed martial artist and convicted bank robber. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail in June 2010 for masterminding a 2006 £53 million armed raid in Kent, UK.^[1] His term was then extended to 25 years on 30 November 2010.^[2]

Early life[link]

On his mother Barbara Murray's side, Lee's family hails from Bermondsey, a densely populated part of south London located between Tower Bridge and the Old Kent Road, and also an area that has been a traditional breeding ground for professional criminals, especially armed robbers.^[3] Following World War II, the Murrays were among thousands of working-class families relocated from bomb-ravaged inner London to council estates on the outskirts of the capital.^[3] The particular location of the Murray residence was 6 Godstow Road in Abbey Wood, located between Shooter's Hill - so named because it was once a notorious area for highway robbery - and the River Thames, in the southeast corner of Greater London.^[3]

Barbara Murray was a hairdresser and later a telephonist, and it was on a holiday to Gran Canaria that she met Lee's father, Brahim Lamrani, a kitchen hand from the southern Moroccan city of Sidi Ifni.^[3] The couple's first child, Lee would be born in St. Nicholas Hospital, Plumstead, on 12 November 1977, and was initially raised by his mother while Brahim continued to live and work in the Canary Islands.^[3] Eventually he came to the United Kingdom and married Barbara in 1984, and the following year she gave birth to Lee's only sibling, a daughter named Rkia.^[3]

By then the family were living a few miles from Abbey Wood at 11 Buttmarsh Close, Plumstead, and Murray attended Foxfield Primary School, where he would meet his eventual wife, Siobhan Rowlings, who was three years his junior.^[3] Murray's closest associates at this point were a group of other males from Buttmarsh and the surrounding estates who called themselves the "Buttmarsh Boys;" described as "happy kids" who used to "play like normal kids on the estate," the boys fought to establish a pecking order among the group and believed they had a duty to "look after" Buttmarsh, sometimes engaging in fights with boys from neighboring estates.^[3] A skinny youngster, Murray's preferred method of attack was running into battle wind-milling his arms around his head with a "manic" expression on his face, a maneuver that combined with his protruding ears earned him the nickname of "Alien," which he hated.^[3]

Murray had a difficult relationship with his father, who was often drunk and described as a "frightening, violent man" who was "volatile and domineering."^[3] Largely absent from the first seven years of Lee's life, Brahim demanded respect and obedience from his son, at one point garnering a warning from police for mistreatment.^[3] Eventually, Lee began to fight back against his father, with Lee's former next-door neighbor describing an incident where Brahim "actually went and hit Lee and Lee snapped, just turned round and knocked his Dad clean out...once he realized he could take down a big man like that I think that's what changed Lee into the man he is now - a thug."^[3] The relationship between father and son eventually grew so tempestuous that Brahim felt staying at home would result in either he or Lee killing the other, so he moved out.^[3] Barbara Murray was then left to raise Lee and Rkia largely on her own, and moved back to the Abbey Wood Estate by getting a council house on Grovebury Road around the corner from her parents.^[3]

At this time Lee began attending Eaglesfield Boys School, which is where he would meet his eventual best friend and partner-in-crime, Paul Allen.^[3] Murray - who does enjoy reading and puzzles - was a subpar student, and what little talent he did exhibit was in football, although he failed to make the school team.^[3] Murray's teachers found him to be unmanageable, resulting in his expulsion and eventual enrollment at Woolwich Polytechnic to complete the statutory years of his education.^[3] By then Murray was living life on the streets, with stealing and drug-dealing a part of everyday activity; he and the Buttmarsh Boys were allegedly in daily contact with Nigerian drug dealers who operated at Plumstead train station, and an eventual turf war broke out that saw Murray and his friends emerge victorious, leading to their inheritance of the local drug trade.^[3]

Murray would eventually be convicted of possession of cocaine and marijuana, in addition to being named in the Old Bailey as a notorious London drug dealer who employed Paul Allen as his right-hand man in addition to a network of drug runners.^[3] One of Murray's best friends from this time was a local ruffian and future mixed martial artist named Mark "The Beast" Epstein, who claimed that he and Lee sold crack cocaine and that Murray "made a lot of money from that."^[3] Murray also proved himself adept at the more violent side of selling drugs, typically in order to control territory and make sure customers pay.^[3] Murray himself claimed that "some people would probably say I was a bully, but a bully to me is someone that goes for easy targets and people who can't fight back. Me, I went for all targets."^[3] Murray was known for punching people almost at random in the street, as well as habitually harassing a man who ran a local corner shop.^[3]

Murray was soon sent to the Feltham Young Offenders Institution, the first of several custodial sentences for relatively minor offenses such as assault and thievery; he also served time as a juvenile in Dover and Norwich as well.^[3] Upon emerging from Feltham, Murray began attending the gym, lifting weights and drinking weight-gainer shakes in order to add bulk to his lanky, 6'3" frame.^[3] Joining him at the gym was Paul Allen, who by then was known as "The Enforcer", presumably because he assisted in enforcing Murray's control over drug-dealing in their small swath of south-east London.^[3]

Murray and Allen were soon using steroids and spending the money they earned from selling drugs on cars, typically of the big, flashy variety.^[3] The police stopped Murray regularly, and because they suspected he was a drug dealer attempted to place an informer in his group but failed to acquire sufficient evidence to prosecute.^[3] Murray was contemptuous of the police, often mocking and intimidating them on the streets, sometimes even following police officers around in his car.^[3] Some officers at Plumstead Police Station were afraid of Murray, and there was even a rumor within the station that certain policemen preferred not to confront him, with one stating that "he's a very dangerous man."^[3]

Murray's girlfriend Siobhan gave birth to his first child, a daughter named Lilly Jane on 24 December 1998.^[3] Just weeks later Murray was caught up in a turf war with rival drug dealers that led to the arrest of Epstein and more than a dozen others, many ultimately ending up in prison.^[3] Murray, however, got "clean away," with Epstein saying that "he was the only one that slipped through the net. I mean, lucky boy! But he's always been lucky...I went to prison for three years."^[3]

Murray would marry Siobhan on 24 November 2000, listing himself on their wedding certificate as a "professional fighter."^[3]

Mixed martial arts career[link]

Shortly after dodging arrest Murray was introduced to mixed martial arts, and he competed in his first fight on 5 December 1999 at an event called "Millenium Brawl" that was held at Hemel Hempstead Pavilion.^[3] His opponent was Rob Hudson, and Murray knocked him out in the first round, prompting event promoter Andy Jardine to say, "He was so quick they called him 'Lightning' Lee Murray."^[3]

Murray's successful debut led him to begin training seriously; he jogged around the Abbey Wood Estate and attended two gyms - London Shootfighters in White City for wrestling, and Peacock's Gym in Canning Town for boxing.^[3] Martin Bowers, who ran Peacock's with his brothers Tony and Paul, described Murray as "a very nice boy" who "conducted himself well."^[3] Bowers said that Murray reminded him of many other young men who he'd seen in his gym over the years, men who'd come from troubled backgrounds but whose lives were given structure by sport.^[3] Notably, at the same time that Murray was training at Peacock's Gym the Bowers brothers were planning a series of robberies, the biggest being a brazen raid on a high-security warehouse at Gatwick Airport; their scheme involved disguising themselves as security officers, utilizing a phony Brink's-Mat van to get into the depot, and then stealing £1 million in foreign currency.^[3] After Scotland Yard found out about the planned heist all three brothers were arrested and jailed; it has been speculated that while Murray had no prior knowledge about the caper, the schematics that were later revealed publicly may have given him some of the ideas that were used in the not-dissimilar Securitas depot robbery.^[3]

Murray had four professional fights in 2000; the first was a 12 March encounter with Mike Tomlinson under the banner of "Ring of Truth." Murray won the fight via a kimura submission in the first round, but it was in February 2004 that he would expand on some of the events surrounding the fight. Writing on a message board in a now-archived thread from the mixed martial arts website Sherdog, Murray told the story of watching Prince Naseem Hamed's fight at a pub the night before his own match with Tomlinson; when a patron stood in front of Murray and then accused him of stealing his seat after being asked to move, Murray allegedly knocked the man and his friend who attempted to aid him unconscious, followed by utilizing knee-strikes to knock out a bartender who rushed to break up the fight.^[4] The following morning - and day of his fight with Tomlinson - Murray was unable to close his left hand; his friend (and former professional mixed martial artist) Dexter Casey examined the injury and said they needed to go to the hospital, but Murray claims to have refused.^[4] After taping the hand, Murray relied solely on his good (right) hand, stating that he "caught him [Tomlinson] with a few good rights...he was rocked so he took me down then I caught him in a keylock on the ground and won the fight...after that I went to the hospital and got my hand plastered up, it was broke in two places."^[4]

Murray's next two bouts took place on 17 June 2000 in a tournament fought at Extreme Challenge 34. Murray defeated his first opponent, Chris Albandia, by ankle lock in the first round. Murray would later say that he thought Albandia was a kickboxer because he was wearing Thai shorts, so he started the fight out with leg kicks.^[5] When Albandia surprised Murray by performing a single-leg takedown, Murray said he "sprawled and took him to the side of the cage where I was kneeing him and punching constantly. He dropped again and took me down, going for a leglock. So I grabbed his leg and went to trade leglocks with him. I cranked an achilles lock on and I think it must have snapped because there was a real loud crack. Even Pat heard it in my corner and when Chris got up he couldn't put weight on it. So I won that one."^[5]

The victory advanced Murray to the second round of the tournament, but he would lose by armbar to Canadian submission-specialist Joe Doerksen in the opening round. Murray said that when he "went into the final, I was so happy and excited about winning the first I just sort of lost my focus...[Doerksen's] a BJJ [Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu] guy who's only ever lost to Matt Hughes and Eugene Jackson. Anyway, he just took me straight to the ground. I didn't even make him pay while he tried. He launched a three sub attack at me with me in his guard. I fended off two and then got submitted with a keylock. I learnt a lot from that fight."^[5]

Murray's next fight was just weeks later, a 9 July contest against Danny Rushton, a fighter who had gained a reputation for toughness due to his competing in true no-holds-barred competitions in Russia.^[5] The match ended up a no-contest, however, after Rushton collapsed in the first round due to exhaustion.

At some point in 2000, Murray traveled to Bettendorf, Iowa to train at the renowned Miletich Fighting Systems camp run by former UFC welterweight champion Pat Miletich.^[5] In an interview conducted before the Rushton fight, Murray stated that while at MFS he trained a "hell of a lot of ground work. And a lot of kickboxing too. I prefer standup. Well, I just prefer to strike really. I like to keep the fight standing up and punch. Mind you, I like to punch from the mount too. I like to strike."^[5]

On 11 March 2001, Murray fought to a draw against Chris Bacon at Millennium Brawl 2: Capital Punishment; he followed that up with a first-round knockout of Gary Warren at Millennium Brawl 3: Independence Day on 1 July.^[6]

On September 11, 2004 Lee fought now UFC middle weight champion Anderson 'The Spider' in Cage Rage 8 for the vacant middleweight title. The fight last all 3 rounds but Anderson Silva was given the unanimous decision.

Lee amassed a 8-2-1 (1NC)^[6] record in smaller promotions before receiving a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In his UFC debut, he defeated Jorge Rivera by triangle choke/armbar in the first round. This was Murray's only fight in the UFC due to complications with his US visa as a result of ongoing criminal prosecution against him in the UK for assault after he attacked a man during a road rage incident. This led to Murray signing with the Cage Rage promotion, which was also short-lived due to injuries resulting from a stabbing preventing Lee from continuing his MMA career.

Street brawls[link]

Murray was allegedly involved in a scuffle with then-UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz outside of a nightclub in London after UFC 38 in July 2002, in which Murray allegedly fought Ortiz. Murray asserts he knocked Ortiz out^[7]- a claim substantiated by Matt Hughes in his book "Made in America: The Most Dominant Champion in UFC History" (pg. 168), as well as Pat Miletich during an interview with ESPN.^[8] Tito Ortiz however denies he was knocked out.^[9]

On 28 September 2005, Murray was hospitalized after being stabbed in a brawl during the birthday party of British glamour model Lauren Pope. He suffered a punctured lung and a severed artery.^[10][11] According to the doctor who performed the life saving surgery on Murray, he was resuscitated four times during the operation that saved his life. When thanked, the doctor remarked that Lee should thank the nurses who ran the bags of blood from the blood bank because that was what saved his life.

Securitas Depot robbery[link]

On 25 June 2006, in a joint operation with Moroccan police, Murray was arrested at a shopping centre in the Souissi district of the capital Rabat for suspected involvement in the Securitas depot robbery. Moroccan police said they had to use "specialist techniques to arrest the suspects because they were specialists in martial arts and firearms"^[12] Kent Police said in a statement that they had been tracking Murray for three months and would be seeking his extradition from Morocco. There is no treaty between the UK and Morocco, and the process was expected to take months. Later, Moroccan police revealed that Murray had also been charged with possession of "hard drugs". An officer said this could complicate extradition proceedings because, in theory, Murray would have to serve time in Morocco first for any offences committed there.^[13] On 27 June 2006 Kent Police confirmed the news of Murray's arrest in Morocco, and also stated that over 30 people had now been arrested in conjunction with the investigation.

In February 2007 it was reported that Murray could be returned to Britain in exchange for suspected terrorist Mohamed Karbouzi, who is wanted for questioning by the Moroccan authorities in connection with the 2003 Casablanca bombings.^[13]

In June 2009, an attempt to escape Sale prison in Morocco was made by Murray. Small saws were found in a plate of biscuits in Murray's cell by another prisoner who broke into it. Prison officials believe Murray was planning to cut through the iron bars of his cell window with the saws. To make the escape through the small window easier, Murray had lost a significant amount of weight recently through training hard and starving himself. Murray was in a different cell at the time as punishment for being caught with a laptop computer (with internet access) and five kilos of drugs. Other prisoners at Sale held it against Murray that he was able to use his money to smuggle in items like these, as well as expensive clothes. The fellow prisoner who broke into his cell was doing so to steal some of Murray's belongings.^[14][15] He was convicted of the £53m crime in a Moroccan court in June 2010. Kent Police said Murray must serve 10 years in jail in Morocco for his involvement. This Term was then extended to 25 years on November 30, 2010^[2]

Film biography[link]

Time Inc. announced on 4 August 2008 that they would be making a film about Lee Murray's alleged role in the robbery, based on an article about him in Sports Illustrated called "Breaking the Bank". In addition to the robbery, the film will also concentrate on Murray's life, including his mixed martial arts career.^[16]

Charles David "Chuck" Liddell (born December 17, 1969) is a retired American mixed martial artist and former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion. Liddell has an extensive striking background in Kempo, Koei-Kan karate and kickboxing, as well as a grappling background in collegiate wrestling.^[2] Liddell is known for his Knockout power, Iron chin, Excellent counter striking and for his sprawl-and-brawl technique, which made him one of the most difficult fighters to takedown. He is one of the most dominant champions that ever competed in the UFC. He still holds the record for the most knockouts in UFC history. As of his retirement, Liddell has had 23 fights in the UFC. Along with fellow UFC Hall of Fame fighter Randy Couture, Liddell is widely credited for bringing mixed martial arts into the mainstream of American sports and entertainment.^[3][4][5] On July 10, 2009, he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.^[6]

Early life[link]

Liddell began studying Koei-Kan karate at the age of 12;^[7] the tattoo seen on his scalp reads "Koei-Kan".^[8] Liddell was a four-year starter on the football team at San Marcos High School. While growing up in Santa Barbara, he often frequented the infamous Del Playa Drive, the middle of the party scene of the college town of Isla Vista, where he often found himself in fights with drunk college students.^[9] He became a Division I wrestler at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo^[7] and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business/Accounting in 1995. He holds an amateur kickboxing record of 20 wins and 2 losses,^[10] with 16 of his wins coming by way of knockout.^[11]

When Liddell started his MMA career, he began to train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under John Lewis in Las Vegas, Nevada.^[7]

Rise To Fame[link]

Liddell made his UFC debut in 1998 during UFC 17 in Mobile, Alabama, with a decision victory over Noe Hernandez. Despite a Technical submission loss to top contender Jeremy Horn shortly after, Liddell began establishing his reputation as a top contender with dominant victories over Kevin Randleman, Murilo Bustamante, Vitor Belfort, Amar Suloev, Jeff Monson, Renato Sobral and Tito Ortiz. Liddell was also the first UFC fighter currently on the roster to go fight in Pride where he represented the organization against fellow kickboxer Guy Mezger, knocking him out cold in one of the most exciting fights in the earlier days of MMA.^[12]

Liddell vs. Couture[link]

By 2002, Liddell was considered the number one contender for the UFC light heavyweight title, with growing popularity and support from his fans. The UFC tried to arrange a title bout with then-champion Tito Ortiz, but Ortiz cited scheduling conflicts.^[13] To force Ortiz's hand, they created an interim light heavyweight championship and matched Liddell with Greco-Roman wrestler and former heavyweight champion "The Natural" Randy Couture at UFC 43. Couture neutralized Liddell's hooks with straight punches and eventually began taking "The Iceman" down at will. Couture eventually gained full mount and forced a referee stoppage due to a barrage of punches.

Pride Grand Prix Tournament against Overeem/Jackson[link]

After his defeat to Couture, Liddell entered the Pride 2003 Middleweight Grand Prix tournament as the official UFC representative. After defeating Muay-Thai specialist Alistair Overeem in the first round of the tournament In an action packed bout Liddell was getting out landed by the taller, quicker and more technical striking of Overeem but later in the round Liddell landed an overhand punch to the head of Overeem staggering him into the ropes, Liddell rushed in with knees and straight rights and knocked him out at the latter stages of the first round. In the next round Liddell was eliminated by Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, The first round Liddell was landing shots as he found his distance but Jackson countered with powerful strikes rocking Liddell numerous times. In the second round, Jackson continued to out land Liddell with big punches but couldn't finish him. Later in the second round a visibly exhausted Liddell was taken down and while taking a barrage of punches from the ground his corner threw in the towel, giving Jackson the upset victory.

Liddell vs. Ortiz[link]

Returning to the UFC, Liddell was once again put in contention for the light heavyweight title, preparing for a match with former champion Ortiz. The pair had once trained together at the Pit fight Club and experienced a falling out that escalated as Ortiz taunted Liddell.^{[citation needed]} The falling out stemmed from Ortiz's unwillingness to give Liddell a title fight, despite Liddell's status as the top contender in the UFC. Eventually, after Ortiz lost the title to Randy Couture, the two would meet in a highly anticipated bout at UFC 47 on April 2, 2004, in Las Vegas, Nevada. After most of the first round was spent feeling each other out, Liddell threw a few punches and a kick which was blocked by Ortiz, with Ortiz slapping himself on the head, taunting Liddell. When the round ended Ortiz pushed referee "Big" John McCarthy out of his way, into Liddell, and the pair exchanged words. Shortly after the second round started, Liddell landed a flurry of punches that dropped Ortiz and led to a TKO victory. Ortiz has since stated that Liddell's thumb made contact with his eye, causing him to momentarily see "nothing but black".^[14] Since UFC 47, the bad blood between both fighters remained, with Ortiz repeatedly stating that he wanted "his" title belt back. Despite the tension, Ortiz and Liddell would not fight again for two and a half years.

Becoming a Legend[link]

The Ultimate Fighter[link]

In early 2005, Liddell was a coach on the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter, Spike TV's reality show which featured fighters competing for a UFC contract.^[15] Liddell was the coach of Team Liddell, while then-UFC-light-heavyweight champion Randy Couture coached Team Couture. The series was a success for both Spike TV and the UFC. Both of the winners of the show, Diego Sanchez and Forrest Griffin, were members of Team Liddell and have had very successful careers in the UFC since.^[16]

Liddell vs. Couture II[link]

On April 16, 2005, at UFC 52, Liddell fought Randy Couture, again for the light heavyweight title. Couture moved in for a punch, Liddell countered with a big right hand to the temple of Couture, knocking him out cold, making him the new UFC light heavyweight champion.

Liddell vs. Horn II[link]

Liddell was scheduled to defend his new title against UFC veteran Jeremy Horn, at UFC 54, a matchup the UFC claimed was demanded by long-time fans of the sport since Horn had given Liddell his first loss.^[17] Throughout the bout, Liddell dominated with aggressive punches, causing knockdowns in several rounds. Liddell's defensive wrestling ability, especially his sprawl, stifled the bulk of Horn's offense, which was centered on grappling and submission wrestling. Liddell eventually won the fight via TKO in 2:46 minutes of the fourth round after Horn informed the referee that he could not see. He had been hit with a right punch to the eye causing him to bleed from his eye as well as his nose. Liddell had successfully defended his title and, in the process, avenged two of his three career losses.

Liddell vs. Couture III[link]

On February 4, 2006, at UFC 57, Liddell faced Randy Couture in a rubber match, After an action packed first round, Liddell landed a big punch to Couture's face causing him to bleed, Couture bounced back with a take down of Liddell, but he was able to get up right away. Later in the second round as Couture moved in Liddell countered similar to in the second fight at UFC 52 knocking Couture out. defeating Couture for the 2nd time via knockout in Las Vegas, Nevada to retain the light heavyweight championship belt. After the fight, Couture announced his retirement from mixed martial arts.

Liddell vs. Sobral II[link]

In Liddell's next defense, at UFC 62 on August 26, 2006, Liddell would best Renato "Babalu" Sobral, who he had defeated nearly three years prior. Seconds after the fight started Sobral came running forward throwing punches, Liddell was moving backwards landing big punches, a right upper cut was the final hit in the onslaught ending the fight at 1:35 of the first round. It was announced during UFC 61 that, if he were to defeat Sobral, Liddell would face off against Pride Middleweight (205 lb) champion Wanderlei Silva. The fight failed to materialize due to the competing promotions' inability to reach an agreement. UFC president Dana White attributed this to Silva's subsequent knockout loss to Mirko Filipović.^[18]

Liddell vs. Ortiz II[link]

In what would be the most financially successful UFC event to date, Liddell fought a rematch with Ortiz at UFC 66, which took place on December 30, 2006. Liddell's takedown defense neutralized Ortiz's wrestling ability forcing Ortiz to stand up with a known striker. Although Ortiz did take Liddell down at one point in the fight, Liddell went on to defeat Ortiz via TKO in the third round to successfully defend his light heavyweight championship for a fourth time. It was later revealed that Liddell tore his MCL prior to the fight. In addition, during the fight he popped the tendon out on the middle finger on his left hand.^[19]

Losing Title and Decline[link]

Liddell vs. Jackson II[link]

In his fifth defense, Liddell would lose the title at UFC 71 on May 26, 2007, in a rematch with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Liddell was knocked down by a right hook less than two minutes into the first round and was unable to defend himself against Jackson's strikes on the ground, resulting in a KO victory for Jackson. After the loss, Liddell was widely criticized after reports indicated he had been seen in night clubs the week before the event. He responded that it wasn't anything he hadn't done prior to his other fights in Las Vegas.^[20]

Liddell vs. Jardine[link]

Liddell trained with American Boxing Gold Medalist Howard Davis Jr. to prepare for an April 2009 bout against Mauricio Rua.

On July 11, 2007, Dana White confirmed in an interview with Yahoo! Sports that a rumoured bout between Wanderlei Silva and Liddell had been canceled indefinitely. Silva and Liddell were supposed to fight in the main event at UFC 76 in Anaheim, California.^[21] Instead, Liddell would face Keith Jardine.^[22]

In the main event of UFC 76, Liddell came out landing his signature right hand to the head of Jardine, rocking him backwards as well as multiple straight right hands but Jardine stayed in the fight. After the dominant first round for Liddell, Jardine started to land low leg kicks continuously throughout the fight while Liddell was unable to time the odd formed southpaw. Liddell lost a close split decision, the first consecutive losses of his career. Liddell stated he wanted a re-match and never took Jardine seriously at all.

Liddell vs. Silva[link]

On October 23, 2007, White announced that a matchup between Liddell and Silva would finally take place at UFC 79. The fight was all that it was billed up to be over the years, It was a back-and-forth battle between two of the best light heavy weights of all time. Liddell defeated Silva via unanimous decision, out-landing Silva with harder, more efficient punches and getting two takedowns later in the fight. Many fans and MMA critics called it the best fight of the year. Both fighters were awarded "Fight of the Night" honors. This fight was voted 2007's Fight of the Year at the first annual World Mixed Martial Arts Awards.

Liddell vs. Evans[link]

On February 1, 2008, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua revealed that he had recently signed a contract to fight Liddell,^[23] however on March 4 it was announced on UFC.com that "Shogun" was receiving surgery on his knee and was forced to withdraw from the fight. It was later officially announced that undefeated wrestler "Sugar" Rashad Evans would replace Mauricio Rua in a bout at UFC 85 in London, England. However, a hamstring injury forced Liddell to withdraw from the fight, as well.^[24]

On September 6, 2008, Liddell fought Rashad Evans at UFC 88. Despite Liddell pushing the pace and controlling the fight, At 1:51 of the second round, Liddell threw a right uppercut just as Evans connected with an overhand right, causing Liddell to fall unconscious to the mat. Liddell has been criticized for over-relying on the same coaches and training partners.^[25] Shortly following his knockout loss to Evans, long-time trainer John Hackleman confirmed that Liddell is participating in training sessions with American Top Team to "round out his skills", although he is still officially associated with Hackleman and The Pit.^[26]

Liddell vs. Shogun Rua[link]

On January 17, 2009, Dana White confirmed during the UFC 93 post fight press conference that Liddell's next fight would be against the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix Champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 97 on April 18 in Montréal, Canada.^[27]

On April 18 at UFC 97, Liddell was once again defeated by TKO due to strikes late in the first Round. After the fight, White declared that Liddell is retired from fighting.^[28][29] White said, "I care about him. I care about his health, and it's over, man. It's over."^[28] White went further, saying, "At the end of the day, I care about these guys. I don't want to see anybody stick around too long. You're never going to see Chuck Liddell on the canvas again."^[29] In May however, Liddell's trainer, John Hackleman, claimed 'with confidence' that Liddell isn't done yet and that he's "definitely on top of the food chain."^[30] Liddell has "more than one fight left in him." In an interview afterward, White went on to rhetorically ask "can I tell him not to fight? Absolutely not. If he still wants to fight, he can fight. I'm not saying, 'It will never happen. It will never happen.' But he made a deal with me [not to fight]."^[31]

Hall of Fame and talks of retirement[link]

On July 10, 2009, at the UFC 100 Fan Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, Liddell was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

After UFC 101 in August, Dana White stated that "I don't want him to (fight). He wants to, so we'll see what happens."^[32] Two days afterward, Liddell went on record to say that he was undecided on the matter and that "it's hard for an athlete to quit what he's done his whole life."^[33] Liddell went on to say that he would be "making that decision in the gym, not in the ring" after sparring sessions.

Liddell vs. Franklin[link]

In his final fight Chuck Liddell suffered his third consecutive knockout defeat to Rich Franklin at UFC 115 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

It was later announced that Liddell would be coaching against fierce rival Tito Ortiz on the 11th season of The Ultimate Fighter, with the two of them fighting each other on June 12, 2010, at UFC 115. However, in March, it was rumored that Ortiz was pulling out for as yet unknown reasons and Ortiz would be replaced by former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin.^[34] This was then denied by UFC president Dana White.^[35]

On April 7, 2010, White confirmed that Liddell vs. Ortiz 3 would be the main event for the card;^[36] however, on April 12, 2010, the main event was changed to Liddell vs. Rich Franklin.

On June 12, 2010, Liddell faced Franklin at UFC 115 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Liddell came out and looked the best he had since his prime years, landing brutal high kicks and a takedown, until Rich Franklin connected with a counter right hook knocking Liddell out cold in the first round with five seconds remaining until the end of the round, ending his legendary Mixed martial arts career. Earlier in the fight Franklin had broken his arm blocking a body kick from Liddell. Only a few hours after the match, UFC President Dana White declared that he guarantees Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell will not fight in the UFC ever again.^[37]

UFC Retirement[link]

Chuck stated that he had made the decision to retire after losing 3 consecutive fights by knockout, despite his belief that he could continue to fight. With the opinions and considerations of his family and friends in mind, he decided to end his fighting career on December 29, 2010. At the UFC 125 press conference, Liddell announced his retirement and stated he would be taking the position of Vice President of Business Development within the UFC.^[38] Liddell was visibly emotional at the announcement, acknowledging his retirement and an end to his fighting with words of farewell: "Most of all I want to thank my fans and my family. I love this sport and I'm excited to go to this new stage in my life and keep promoting the best sport in the world, the sport I love... now that I'm retired."^[39]

Personal life[link]

Liddell is associated with John Hackleman and The Pit fight team and earned a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Liddell has a brother, Sean, who also competes in MMA, fighting last in the WEC.^[40] He also has a brother named Dan and a sister named Laura.^[41]

Liddell continues to train in San Luis Obispo, CA, where he attended college. He has two children, a daughter named Trista, with female MMA fighter Casey Noland and son named Cade.^[42][43][44]

Chuck once dated the female host of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Willa Ford.^[45]

Liddell is no longer engaged to his longtime girlfriend Erin Wilson.^[46]

He is a former part owner of two bars in Lincoln, Nebraska, Dillinger's and NZone.^[47] He also owns a store called "Ultimate Iceman", a memorabilia store in San Luis Obispo.^[41]

Liddell endorsed John McCain in the 2008 United States presidential election.^[48][49]

Liddell proposed to his girlfriend Heidi Northcott on November 4, 2010.^[50] The couple are expecting their first child together, a daughter, in 2011.^[51]

On May 9, 2007, Liddell became the first UFC fighter to be on the cover of ESPN The Magazine.^[52] Liddell also released his autobiography, Iceman: My Fighting Life, on January 29, 2008.^[53]

Acting career[link]

Liddell has also made several film and television appearances. He appeared as himself in the movie Bachelor Party Vegas, He appeared as "Graft" in the pilot episode of the TV series Blade: The Series, had a guest cameo in the first season of Inked on A&E, and made a brief appearance in the 1981 film The Postman Always Rings Twice with Jack Nicholson.^[54] He also acted as a UFC fighter that got beat up in a famous 2011 movie Warrior. He was uncredited in this film. Chuck was brought on set to teach main characters how to fight in various MMA styles.

[edit] Good Morning Texas interview

In March 2007, shortly before UFC 68, he appeared on Good Morning Texas (Texan version of Good Morning America) for an interview, and to promote the film 300, but appeared to be very drowsy and fell asleep in mid-interview. The Interview ended when Liddell asked the host who he would like to fight.^[55] UFC President Dana White, along with Liddell's head coach Scott VanGilder, explained that Liddell had pneumonia and had taken a large dose of sedatives the night before the interview. This is just one explanation offered by Dana White. In another interview when Dana White was asked about Liddell's behaviour on Good Morning Texas, he stated that Liddell had been out drinking the night before and had taken a sleeping pill when he got back to his accommodation so he would be ready for the interview the next morning.

He was named the "Most Dangerous Man" at the Spike TV Guys' Choice Awards on June 13, 2007.^[56]

Mark Anthony Weir (September 19, 1967) is an English mixed martial artist usually fighting in the middleweight division at 185 lbs. He has fought in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and Pride Fighting Championships, and is the former Cage Rage British middleweight champion

Biography[link]

Mark Weir lives in Hempsted, England with his wife Michelle and three children, Tamara,Lyle & Mya. Weir appears keen to pass his knowledge to the next generation of the family, as he once said of his daughter that “Tamara is really into martial arts and she is already picking up some of the skills.”^[1]

Martial arts background & training regimen[link]

Weir began his martial arts training with judo and boxing, but later switched to taekwondo because his mother did not want him to box full-time^[2]. He gained his taekwondo black belt in 1988 from Master Hee Il Cho, then went on to win World Championships in both 1988 and 1991. Weir moved up from Light Heavyweight to Heavyweight over the two competitions. ^[3]

Weir had perhaps his most notable success in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. On July 13, 2002, he knocked out Eugene Jackson in 10 seconds at UFC 38. Fittingly, it was also the first time the UFC had been held in England, with a number of British mixed martial artists competing alongside Weir in the Royal Albert Hall. Being an undefeated former world champion in Tae Kwon Do and Kick Boxing tournaments, Mark Weir brings to the cage renowned kicking and punching ability.

Weir holds classes in Gloucester and Oxford, where he teaches what he calls ‘Range Fighting’, combining muay thai, boxing, ju jitsu and ground fighting.^[4]

Weir went on to win numerous MMA titles in such events as WEC and Cage Rage.

In early 2010, Weir captured the vacant Ultimate Challenge MMA K1 title against Mark Epstein, going back to his foundation of kickboxing. He then went on to take the UCMMA Middleweight title by defeating Jack Mason via strikes.

Mark successfully defended his K1 title against Luke Sines at Unbelievable 16 on 23 October 2010^[5].

The beginning of 2011 saw Mark concentrating on the opening of a new MMA gym in Oxford, which boasts to be the biggest in the South West.

Mark is now looking forward to defending his titles and maintain his presence in MMA.

Genki Sudo (須藤 元気, Sudō Genki^?, born March 8, 1978 in Kōtō, Tokyo, Japan) is a retired Japanese mixed martial artist and a kickboxer who, until December 31, 2006 competed in the Japanese fighting organization HERO'S and before that, the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Pancrase. He is notable for his elaborate ring entrances^[2] and unorthodox fighting style.^[3] His philosophy is "We are all one."^[4] He is a practicing Buddhist.^[5] Signature moves include the flying triangle and spinning backfist. He is also an essayist, a musician, an actor and a dancer.
