21. The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000: Crisis of the Carolingians
The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210) In this lecture, Professor Freedman discusses the crisis and decline of Charlemagne's empire. Increasingly faced with external threats -- particularly the Viking invasions -- the Carolingian Empire ultimately collapsed from internal causes, because its rulers were unable effectively to manage such a large empire. In the absence of strong social infrastructure and an idea of loyalty to the ruler, government servants strove to make their positions hereditary and nobles sought to set up independent kingdoms. Although it only lasted for a short time, the Carolingian Empire helped shape the face of Europe, especially through the partitions of the Treaty of Verdun which created territories roughly equivalent to France and Germany. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Carolingian Bible
Some have called this the most beautiful bible in the world. Its called the Carolingian Bible a 1200 year old manuscript thats been put on display in Rome for the first time ever. Luis Ponce Visitor from Chile We dont know very much about this bible in our part of the world, especially in Chile, and they tell us this display is rare. So, thank God we had the chance to see it and learn about it on this trip to Rome. Marco Cardinali Delegate of External Affairs, Saint Paul Outside the Wall For the first time in its history, and in the history of the Church, this particular Bible has been put on display, so that visitors can come see it in its splendor. Marco Cardinali is one of the few people whos touched and studied the bible in person. Though on display its fixed on one page, he shed some light on what the rest of pages look like. Marco Cardinali Delegate of External Affairs, Saint Paul Outside the Wall The perfection and beauty of the characters is incredible. The way its written is phenomenal. After 1200 years it looks like it was made yesterday. The Carolingian Bible was commissioned by Charles the Younger, King of the Franks, who gave it to Pope John VIII in the 9th century. Years later, in order to protect the Bible from barbarian attacks against Rome, it was housed here in St. Paul Outside the Wall and has been here ever since, still boasting its timeless splendor. RSS

The History Hut: Rise of the Carolingians (Pt. 1)
This episode of The History Hut focuses on Charlemagne and the Carolingians, who originally come to power through the position of "mayor of the palace." They had problems when it came to the question of succession and the Frankish tradition of dividing up the empire after the death of the ruler, which can be seen through the reigns of Charles Martel, Pepin the Short and Charlemagne. The three characteristics of Charlemagne's rule -- militarism, marriage of church and state, and the Carolingian renaissance -- give us a good idea of what was considered important by these rulers, and show us why this shouldn't really be considered the "Dark Ages" at all. We have mentioned Alcuin of York in past episodes, but it is here that you will see his fundamental importance to what Charlemagne was trying to create. Before moving on to examine life under the Carolingians, we will discuss the political organization of the empire and the economic system that developed to protect both the citizens and the lords (For example: The Feudal System). This episode wraps up with a look at the legacy of Charlemagne and his empire.

Drex's Tech Poi Blog #36: Carolingian Cross, stall intensive, footwork
After seeing a Nick Woolsey instructional vid on how to do the triquetra the other day, I discovered a figure I really dug under the wikipedia entry for the word triquetra (en.wikipedia.org called a Carolingian Cross, which essentially amounts to a compound interlacing triquetra. I've spent a good portion of the week dissecting the figure and trying to figure out how to render it with poi. Here are three of the options I've played with. Next, given all the stalls I've been working with since Firedrums, I've taken up a stall intensive, stalling both inside and out with all four corner stalls in the four basic combinations of poi motion. Most of which still need a little work, of course. Finally, a little bit of footwork and deliberate weight placement and how it affects the look of some turns.

The History Hut: Life in Carolingian Times (Pt. 1)
In this episode, we look at life in the Carolingian period and then at what happens to threaten this stability. We begin by looking at the influence and impact of the Roman Catholic Church on family life and marriage and then move on to the church's attitudes towards things as diverse as celibacy and infanticide. We will touch on some other topics as well, such as travel and kinship, before turning back to politics in a world without Charlemagne. It is important for us to not only look at the political challenges faced by Charlemagne's successors, but also to examine the next threat to imperial unity -- one that comes from the north -- from a people you know as the Vikings. But who are they and where do they go?

Est mihi nonum (Quintus Horatius, 65 - 8 aC) Lyrics in english: Phillis, I've a jar of wine, Parsley wreathes, and, for your tresses, Ivy that your beauty blesses. Shines my house with silverware; Frondage decks the altar stair— Sacred vervain, a device For a lambkin's sacrifice. Up and down the household stairs What a festival prepares! Everybody's superintending See the sooty smoke ascending! What, you ask me, is the date Of the day we celebrate? 13th April, month of Venus Birthday of my boss, Mycænas. Let me, Phyllis, say a word Touching Telephus, a bird Ranking far too high above you; (And the loafer doesn't love you). Lessons, Phyllie, may be learned From Phaëton--how he was burned! And recall Bellerophon was One equestrian who thrown was. Phyllis, of my loves the last ...
