Western Ghats - Rain forests of India
The Western Ghats are a mountain range in India, run along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separate the plateau from a narrow coastal plain along the Arabian Sea. They contain the largest patches of moist deciduous forest and rain forest in southern India. These forests are home to diverse fauna and flora, many of them showing affinities to the Malayan region, but are increasingly threatened by human activity. Several national parks and other protected areas lie within the range, but it is estimated that only a small fraction of the Western Ghats remains in pristine condition. The Silent Valley National Park in Kerala is considered by many to be the last tracts of virgin tropical evergreen forest in India. Biogeographers have long recognized the distinctive plant and animal communities of the Western Ghats. Many of these faunal and floral elements are not found anywhere else in India except in parts of northeastern India. The Western Ghats are also home to many endemic species, and the endemism is especially high in the amphibian and reptilian fauna. en.wikipedia.org

Rivers of the western ghats of India - Lecture at IIC, New-Delhi Part I
The sixth lecture in the ten-part series titled "Living rivers, dying rivers" was delivered on the subject "Rivers in Western Ghats of India" by Parineeta Dandekar, South Asia Network on Dams, River and People (SANDRP) and Pandurang Hegde, activist, environmentalist and development critic. The lecture held on November 25, 2011 at the India International Centre, New Delhi highlighted the complex challenges faced by the much abused rivers of Western Ghats of Maharashtra and Karnataka because of anthropogenic threats like deforestation of catchments, sand mining, dam construction, industrial effluent disposal into rivers, inefficient land-use practices all of which lead to shrinking and isolating ecosystems and an adverse impact on peoples livelihoods and health. The series coordinated by Prof. Ramaswamy R Iyer aims at understanding what has been happening to rivers and drawing appropriate lessons. A certain number of rivers, some sick or dying, some living and healthy, and some showing early signs of sickness, are being taken up for presentations and discussion, in the series and an attempt made to understand what has gone wrong in many cases, what has gone right in some, and what needs to be done to revive and restore dying or sick rivers. A blog on the lecture can be viewed at the India Water Portal here -- www.indiawaterportal.org

Gifts of Western Ghats - Rain Forests of India
Western Ghats in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka is home to tea, coffee and spice plantations, reserved forests, and dense tropical jungles. Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, and Wild Boars dwell in the forests. Sloth Bear, Leopard and tiger are also found. The Western Ghats is home to numerous serene hill stations like Munnar, Ponmudi, Waynad, Ooty, Kodaikannal, Coorg etc. The Silent Valley National Park in Kerala is among the last tracts of virgin tropical evergreen forest in India. The Western Ghats form one of the three watershed of India, feeding the perennial rivers of peninsula India. Important rivers include the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri. Rivers that flow to the west drain out into the Arabian Sea. These rivers are fast-moving, owing to the short distance travelled and steeper gradient. Important rivers include the Mandovi, Zuari, and Periyar. Many of these rivers feed the backwaters of Kerala and Maharashtra. Rivers that flow eastwards of the Ghats drain into the Bay of Bengal. These are comparatively slower moving and eventually merge into larger rivers such as the Kaveri and Krishna. Smaller rivers include the Chittar, Bhima, Malaprabha, Manimuthar, Kabini, Kallayi, Kundali, Pachaiyar, Pennar, and Tambaraparani. Fast running rivers and steep slopes have provided various state governments set large hydro-electric projects. There are about major 50 dams along the length of the Western Ghats with the earliest project up in 1900 near Khopoli in Maharashtra. Most notable ...

Incredible Tamil Nadu: Windmills, Western Ghats and Golden Rock WDP4!
For a very long time in my life, I was of the opinion that the world's most beautiful places lay within the Chhota Nagpur Plateau in the state of Jharkhand, India. This belief was shaken in June 2012, as I headed towards the southern-most tip of the Indian mainland, aboard the 16723 Chennai Thiruvananthapuram Anantpuri Express, led by a Golden Rock WDP4. As we left Tirunelveli in the state of Tamil Nadu and curved south-west, the Western Ghats started dotting the horizon, their peaks covered by low-lying clouds - the harbingers of monsoon in India. As we approached the cloud-capped hills, the skies darkened partially, the wind arose, and we were enveloped by a plethora of windmills, rising out of both sides of the tracks, whirring steadily and making an absolutely fascinating sight. I was unaware of the vast presence of windmills in this area but later discovered that over 20% of India's wind-power comes from this area.

YDM4A Loco Ride through the Western Ghats (Aug. 12, 2007)
Select footage from an enthralling footplate between Aryankavu and Bhagavathipuram!! At Aryankavu, Vickram and I hopped into the cab of the loco that was in charge of the Punalur-Tirunelveli Pass. And for the next 18 minutes, we stood mesmerized as Mother Nature offered some of her very best. Can BG recreate all this magic? I doubt it.

Deccan Queen Express Full Journey: The Western Ghats : Lonavala-Karjat
A full journey compilation aboard one of India's most historic trains. The Deccan Queen Express has been plying between Bombay and Pune for the past 7 seven decades, inaugurated during the British Raj in 1930. It remains arguably the most prestigious trains on the Central Railways and overall, one of the finest, punctual and well-maintained trains in India. The second part of the compilation documents the Queen's descent into the northern Konkan plains through the towering Bhor Ghats. In between the 28 kilometres separating Lonavala and Karjat, trains descend a staggering 430 metres (over 1400 feet), curving across the Sahyadri hills, negotiating some of the steepest gradients on the Indian Railways. The tracks cuts right through the hills, courtesy 28 tunnels in a 21 km stretch between Khandala and Karjat. This section forms one of the most beautiful stretches of the Indian Railways, particularly during the monsoons, when the rain clouds envelop the Sahyadri Hills and cause the numerous waterfalls amongst the ghats flow in torrents. The Deccan Queen gracefully snakes through the hills, its sparkling coaches and Kalyan WCAM3 locomotive glittering the in the brilliant spring sun which steadily rises over the Bhor Ghats. A little after 'Monkey Hill' - aptly named for the number of primates who inhabit the area and are well-fed by train passengers (see 1:50 to 3:00) - we encounter the Mumbai Pune Intercity Express, which charges up the ghats with a Kalyan WCAM3 and two WAG7 ...

Western Ghat is getting affected by ecologically insensitive projects - Madhav Gadgil
The Western Ghats, which ranges from Gujarat up to Nagercoil is one of the eight ecologically important hot spots in the world. But over the past few years, in the name of development, the entire Western Ghats have been getting exploited, said Madhav Gadgil at Loksatta Idea Exchange event. It may be for minerals, real estate interests, or in the name of tourism, the forest cover of the Western Ghats has been undergoing a decline. And, this in turn has affected the climate, agriculture and the general economy of the states, he added. Western Ghats in Maharashtra, during the Monsoon - Parsi Point, Panchgani
Located on the route to Mahabaleshwar, Parsi Point in Panchganj offers splendid views of the Western Ghats, Krishna Valley and the waters of the Dhom Dam. The Western Ghats or the Sahyādri constitute a mountain range along the western side of India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight hottest hotspots of biological diversity in the world. This range runs north to south along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separates the plateau from a narrow coastal plain along the Arabian Sea. The range starts near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra, south of the Tapti River, and runs approximately 1600 km through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala ending at Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of India. The area is one of the world's ten "Hottest biodiversity hotspots" and has over 5000 species of flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species and 179 amphibian species. Therefore, it is likely that many undiscovered species live in the Western Ghats. At least 325 globally threatened species occur in the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats are not true mountains, but are the faulted edge of the Deccan Plateau. They are believed to have been formed during the break-up of the super continent of Gondwana some 150 million years ago. The major hill range starting from the north is the Sahyadhri or the benevolent mountains range. This range is home to many hill stations like Matheran, Lonavala-Khandala, Mahabaleshwar ...

Western Ghats - "UNESCO 'Biodiversity Hotspot' & 'World Heritage Site"
This video is shot while boating in a mesmerising lake called VENNA LAKE,which is located between two wonderful hill stations of the WESTERN GHATS ( also called SAHYADRI MOUNTAIN RANGE) in INDIA.This amazing and beautiful lake is surrounded by one of the few evergreen rain forests in india.Boating in this lake is a very romantic experience, which is why it is also a famous honeymoon destination in india epecially during monsoons because western ghats become lush green and uniquely beautiful during monsoon season. What makes this lake special is its location because western ghats is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight hottest hotspots of biological diversity in the world. This range runs north to south along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separates the plateau from a narrow coastal plain along the Arabian Sea. The range starts near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra, south of the Tapti river, and runs approximately 1600 km (990 mi) through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala ending at Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of India. These hills cover 160000 km2 (62000 sq mi) and form the catchment area for complex riverine drainage systems that drain almost 40% of India. The Western Ghats block rainfall to the Deccan Plateau. The average elevation is around 1200 m (3900 ft). The area is one of the world's ten "Hottest biodiversity hotspots" and has over 5000 species of flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 ...
